Abstract:
We describe the first data release from the Spitzer-IRAC Equatorial Survey (SpIES); a large-area survey of similar to 115 deg(2) in the Equatorial SDSS Stripe 82 field using Spitzer during its "warm" mission phase. SpIES was designed to probe sufficient volume to perform measurements of quasar clustering and the luminosity function at z >= 3 to test various models for "feedback" from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Additionally, the wide range of available multi-wavelength, multi-epoch ancillary data enables SpIES to identify both high-redshift (z >= 5) quasars as well as obscured quasars missed by optical surveys. SpIES achieves 5 sigma depths of 6.13 mu Jy (21.93 AB magnitude) and 5.75 mu Jy (22.0 AB magnitude) at 3.6 and 4.5 mu m, respectively-depths significantly fainter than the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We show that the SpIES survey recovers a much larger fraction of spectroscopically confirmed quasars (similar to 98%) in Stripe 82 than are recovered by WISE (similar to 55%). This depth is especially powerful at high-redshift (z >= 3.5), where SpIES recovers 94% of confirmed quasars, whereas WISE only recovers 25%. Here we define the SpIES survey parameters and describe the image processing, source extraction, and catalog production methods used to analyze the SpIES data. In addition to this survey paper, we release 234 images created by the SpIES team and three detection catalogs: a 3.6 mu m. only detection catalog containing similar to 6.1 million sources, a 4.5 mu m. only detection catalog containing similar to 6.5 million sources, and a dual-band detection catalog containing similar to 5.4 million sources.

Abstract:
We present an ongoing, five-year systematic search for extragalactic infrared transients, dubbed SPIRITS-SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey. In the first year, using Spitzer/IRAC, we searched 190 nearby galaxies with cadence baselines of one month and six months. We discovered over 1958 variables and 43 transients. Here, we describe the survey design and highlight 14 unusual infrared transients with no optical counterparts to deep limits, which we refer to as SPRITEs (eSPecially Red Intermediate-luminosity Transient Events). SPRITEs are in the infrared luminosity gap between novae and supernovae, with [4.5] absolute magnitudes between -11 and -14 (Vega-mag) and [3.6]-[4.5] colors between 0.3 mag and 1.6 mag. The photometric evolution of SPRITEs is diverse, ranging from < 0.1 mag yr(-1) to > 7 mag yr(-1). SPRITEs occur in star-forming galaxies. We present an indepth study of one of them, SPIRITS 14ajc in Messier 83, which shows shock-excited molecular hydrogen emission. This shock may have been triggered by the dynamic decay of a non-hierarchical system of massive stars that led to either the formation of a binary or a protostellar merger.

Abstract:
Currently the Spitzer Space Telescope is the most reliable telescope for conducting secondary eclipse observations of exoplanets. The depth and the time of mid-eclipse are two important parameters that come from a secondary eclipse analysis. The eclipse depth gives information on the temperature of the atmosphere, and can provide evidence for the presence of molecules in the atmosphere of the planet. If multiple wavelengths have secondary eclipse depths measured then it is possible to constrain the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the atmosphere given some assumptions on, for example, the metallicity of the planet's atmosphere. The time of mid-eclipse gives e cos which, with an analysis including transit, radial velocity and secondary eclipse data, can strongly constrain the eccentricity of the planet's orbit. To fully understand the conclusions drawn from these two parameters realistic error bars must be quoted on the measurement of these parameters. It is generally understood that error bars that come from MCMC analyses of secondary eclipse observations are underestimated because the correlated noise in the data is not accounted for in the analysis. The goal of this thesis was to find a method to improve the estimates of the uncertainties on these two parameters as derived from Spitzer secondary eclipse lightcurves at 3.6 um and 4.5 um. This work was conducted through the generation and fitting of semi-synthetic Spitzer secondary eclipse light curves. I estimate the amount the uncertainties on these parameters need to be inflated by and show how my results compare with other similar work in the field. I show that the amount of inflation does affect the conclusions drawn when fitting these data with model atmospheres. This could also mean that for systems where complex chemistry is invoked to explain the observed data, simpler model can now fit the data due to the increase in the error bars. I also find that when multiple realisations of the same, simulated, secondary eclipse lightcurve are fit with the standard MCMC code, the amplitude and time of mid-eclipse can be recovered and found to be more than 3 away from the true value of the injected signal. This can mean that, because usually only 1 lightcurve is obtained per observation of the secondary eclipse, some detections of eccentricity and molecules may not be real detections but simply a result of noise in the data.

Abstract:

Flynn, Stephen. "AzTEC and Spitzer investigations of high redshift submillimetre galaxies." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/12383/.

Full text
Abstract:
Submillimetre galaxies are an important element in the history of the universe. There have been great advances in technology in the last ten years that have enabled deeper and more detailed investigations of these distant objects. In thisthesis I describe investigations of the properties of high redshift submillimetre galaxies made using data from multiple surveys and multiple instruments. Firstly I describe the process involved in reducing AzTEC data to produce images. I then present the reduced maps and compare them, along with a source catalogue, to those produced by the AzTEC instrument team. I found both reductions produce broadly similar results with some differences that can be explained by slightly different sets of input maps. I then present an analysis of the fainter objects in one of the AzTEC fields using a stacking technique. This analysis determines the contribution Spitzer detected galaxies make to the background at 1.1mm, the redshift dependence of this contribution and the average dust mass that can be associated with it. I also describe an analysis of the ux ratios Eales et al. (2003)found using the available AzTEC data and Spitzer IRAC imaging. In the the penultimate chapter I describe the frequentist identification technique I used to determine counterparts to SCUBA submillimetre sources in the CUDSS three hour field using Spitzer infrared data.

Abstract:
We have used the Spitzer Space Telescope to observe two transiting planetary systems orbiting low-mass stars discovered in the Kepler K2 mission. The system K2-3 (EPIC 201367065) hosts three planets, while K2-26 (EPIC 202083828) hosts a single planet. Observations of all four objects in these two systems confirm and refine the orbital and physical parameters of the planets. The refined orbital information and more precise planet radii possible with Spitzer will be critical for future observations of these and other K2 targets. For K2-3b we find marginally significant evidence for a transit timing variation between the K2 and Spitzer epochs.

Abstract:
This study focus on the reconstruction of the collection of the art dealer Frédéric Spitzer (1815-1890), by reconsidering the role of his collection within the 19th century European frame and its meaning in the present culture within contemporary cultural dynamics at a global scale. Auctioned in 1893, his collection was considered an exemplar model of his era, marked by strong links between collection, studies, new production of art, communication and disclosure items. Reconsidered according to a multidisciplinary and a transnational perspective and based on unpublished documents, the Spitzer’s microstoria has been rewritten in the wake of his multiple identity, his European travels and his relations with the key figures of the European cultural world. His collection and his art’s objects have been studied here within their original frame, being on display in Spitzer’s mansion in Paris where social rites and private life in the reception rooms were extended into the museum, showing reference to the spirit of the Italian Renaissance in a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk. A reasoned inventory was finally compiled in order to rebuild the lost unity of the museum according to the Spitzer’s encyclopedic and taxonomic spirit in order to contribure and understand its complexity as a research support tool and as a device of information for the cultural heritage and the present mémoire collective

Abstract:
We present the observations, reduction and preliminary analysis of a sample of 45 mid-to-high redshift galaxy clusters imaged with the Spitzer Space Telescope's MIPS camera at 24 ~m and selected from the Red Sequence Cluster Survey. The purpose of the data set is motivated by a broad review of studies into the evolutionary trends of galaxy clusters and their constituent galaxy populations, focusing specifically on recent results that indicate clusters are environmental drivers of dusty starburst and active galactic nuclei activity. To accommodate the large amount of data in hand, we have constructed an extensive data reduction pipeline for the MIPS data and describe its development and output in detail. Using the resulting catalogues for introductory analysis, we find strong evidence for an excess luminous infrared galaxy population in galaxy clusters at high redshift and discuss the implications of this discovery in terms of cluster evolution and motivate future work.

Abstract:
We use Spitzer Space Telescop and Heinrich Hertz Telescope(HHT) observations to study the earliest stages of low--mass starformation. Using spatially resolved absorption features, termedshadows, we study the cold cloud cores where stars form.We study Barnard 335, a prototypical isolated Bok globule with anembedded Class 0 protostar. We discover an 8 micron shadow in theinner regions of the core; using this feature we measure the densecore structure and mass. Using HHT observations we detect a rotatingstructure, a flattened molecular core, with a diameter~ 10,000 AU. The flattened molecular core is likely to be thesame structure as that generating the 8 micron shadow, and isexpected from theoretical simulations. This structure has not beenrobustly detected in previous observations although there have beensome prior indications of its presence. We study dense starless core structure through longer wavelengthobservations of shadows; we present Spitzer observations of 8 micron,24 micron, and 70 micron\ shadows of 14 cores in total. Combined withHHT observations of 12CO 2--1 and 13CO 2--1, we derive core sizes, masses, study core structure, and investigate the collapse status ofeach core. Our study of starless core CB190 reveals that the core islikely to be stable against collapse if magnetic pressure is presentat a reasonable level in the core. Our study of the 70 micron shadowassociated with the starless core L429 reveals that this object isvery likely to be collapsing. Finally, we study a sample of 12starless cores selected to have prominent 24 micron shadows. We findthat about 2/3 of these sources are likely to be collapsing.Additionally, we find indications that 1/2 of the cores revealed to becollapse candidates show indications of having 70 micron shadows. Weconclude that all cores dense enough to produce 70 micron shadows arecollapse candidates, and that the presence of a shadow at 24 micronis an indicator that the core is likely (60% probability)to be collapsing.

Abstract: The current literature has presented innumerable attempts to prevent and controllow back pain. The multifactorial nature of risk factors associated with this affection represents a considerable challenge in the determination of interventional strategies that will be truly effective to control it. The chronic and incapacitating characteristics of low back pain result in important repercussions on the patient' s life significantly compromising the quality of life of those who have this condition. The intemational literature has reported the use of the Quality of Ufe Index - Spitzer (QU) for the evaluation of the quality of life of patients with low back pain. Thecultural adaptation of scales and questionnaires validated in another language has been widely recommended, since it facilitates the scientific information exchange. In this manner, with the purpose of making available to the Brazilian scientific community an instrument for comprehensive evaluation of quality of life, this study had as objective carrying out the cultural adaptation the Spitzer Quality of Ufe Index questionnaire into the Brazilian Portuguese language, and as to evaluate its reliability in patients suffering from low back pain. In order to ensure this adaptation quality, the methodological steps recommended by specialized publications were followed: translation of the instrument into the Brazilian Portuguese language, back-translation, evaluation by a committee of judges, pretest, and reliability and validity assessment. At first, the questionnaire was independently translated by two bilingual translators, who had Brazilian Portuguese as their rnother language. Subsequently, two other translators whose mother language was English did the back-translation. A committee composed of six specialists revised and compareci the translations obtained, developing the final version for pretest application. The pretest was carried out with 40 patients suffering from low back pain. The reliability was estimated through stability (test-retest) and homogeneity assessmenl The validity was tested comparing scores 01' the obtained by means of correlation analysis among thescores of the Spitzer (QU) 'with the SF-36 and the Roland-Morris. The psychometric properties of the translated version were evaluated by the self-application instrument on 120 patients with chronic low back pain. The Cronbach's Alpha was 0.76 for the test and 0.77 for the retest, showing satisfactory internal consistency results. Using the intraclass correlation coefficient for test-retest, the reliability was ICC = 0.960 (p<0.001; IC95%: 0.943; 0.972). The reliability determined by the Spearman's Correlation Coefficient was 0.937 (p<0.001). There was significant correlation between the Spitzer (QU) scores and the different dimensions of the SF-36 questionnaire. The highest correlation coefficients were for Bodily Pain (r = 0.699), Role Functioning (r = 0.687), Physical Functioning (r = 0.682) arid Social Functioning (r = 0.680). A significant correlation was found between the Spitzer (QU) and the Roland-Morris questionnaire scores (r = 0.730). The cultural adaptation .process was conducted successfully and the adapted version presents psychometric rneasures which are reliable and valid in the Brazilian culture

Abstract:
We report on neon abundances derived from Spitzer high resolution spectral data of eight Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars using the forbidden line of [Ne III] 15.56 μm. Our targets include four WN stars of subtypes 4–7, and four WC stars of subtypes 4–7. We derive ion fraction abundances γ of Ne2+ for the winds of each star. The ion fraction abundance is a product of the ionization fraction Qi in stage i and the abundance by number AE of element E relative to all nuclei. Values generally consistent with solar are obtained for the WN stars, and values in excess of solar are obtained for the WC stars.

Abstract:
Previous measurements of heat redistribution efficiency (the ability to transport energy from a planet's highly irradiated dayside to its eternally dark nightside) show considerable variation between exoplanets. Theoretical models predict a positive correlation between heat redistribution efficiency and temperature for tidally locked planets; however, recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WASP-43b spectroscopic phase curve results are inconsistent with current predictions. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, we obtained a total of three phase curve observations of WASP-43b (P = 0.813 days) at 3.6 and 4.5. mu m. The first 3.6. mu m visit exhibits spurious nightside emission that requires invoking unphysical conditions in our cloud-free atmospheric retrievals. The two other visits exhibit strong day-night contrasts that are consistent with the HST data. To reconcile the departure from theoretical predictions, WASP-43b would need to have a high-altitude, nightside cloud/haze layer blocking its thermal emission. Clouds/hazes could be produced within the planet's cool, nearly retrograde mid-latitude flows before dispersing across its nightside at high altitudes. Since mid-latitude flows only materialize in fast-rotating (less than or similar to 1 day) planets, this may explain an observed trend connecting measured day-night contrast with planet rotation rate that matches all current Spitzer phase curve results. Combining independent planetary emission measurements from multiple phases, we obtain a precise dayside hemisphere H2O abundance (2.5 x 10(-5)-1.1 x 10(-4) at 1 sigma confidence) and, assuming chemical equilibrium and a scaled solar abundance pattern, we derive a corresponding metallicity estimate that is consistent with being solar (0.4-1.7). Using the retrieved global CO+CO2 abundance under the same assumptions, we estimate a comparable metallicity of 0.3-1.7x solar. This is the first time that precise abundance and metallicity constraints have been determined from multiple molecular tracers for a transiting exoplanet.

Hopwood, Rosalind. "Investigating strong gravitational lensing with infrared space missions : AKARA, Spitzer and Herschel." Thesis, Open University, 2010. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54219/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the use of strong gravitational lensing to facilitate deep midinfrared observations of star-forming galaxies and to study highly dust obscured sub-millimetre galaxies (SMG). 15 um extragalactic number counts were taken from ultra deep AKARI mapping of the gravitational lensing cluster Abell 2218, which is the deepest image taken by any facility at this wavelength. Via strong gravitational lensing these data probe beyond the AKARI blank field confusion limit. By de-magnifying the extracted source catalogue and performing careful photometric de-blending, using multi-wavelength positional priors, galaxy number counts down to ~0.01 mJy were achieved. These counts are ~3x deeper than previous results and resolve 70-100% of the cosmic infrared background at 15/.Lm,giving a new stronger lower limit of 2.0±0.3 nWm-2 Hz-1. These data are sampling the normal star forming population that dominates the peak epoch of star formation. Stacking analysis of the AKARI 15 um source positions at Herschel/SPIRE wavelengths, show that a deep 15 um galaxy population resolves around 40% of the 250 um cosmic infrared background, but is less representative of galaxy populations sampled at longer wavelengths, where the background is dominated by sub-mm galaxies. This thesis also focuses on strong galaxy-galaxy lensing events and the decoupling of the lens and source photometry in order to estimate redshifts and constrain physical characteristics. The first sample of bright sub-mm gravitational lenses, selected at SPIRE 500 um by the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey, are investigated with light profile and SED fitting, to derive physical characteristics. For two of the five lenses, it was possible to disentangle the lens and background galaxy components in highly photometrically blended Spitzer data, after observations by the Submillimeter Array revealed the lensed structure. The lensed background galaxies are highly dust obscured SMG with intrinsic infrared luminosities < ultra luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), and constrain the number density of un-lensed ULIRGs and hyper luminous infrared galaxies to < 3.2 deg-2.

Abstract:
Based on the lyrics of fado for which there has been no previous research or collection into one study this thesis seeks to show how the city of Lisbon is seen and represented by its inhabitants. The analysis of a corpus of 183 songs that sing the city as such (and not elements of it: the castle, the Tagus, neighborhoods, roofs, characters), shows that Lisbon is most of the time portrayed as a woman. Subsequently, the present study interprets, using the \"philological circle\" proposed by Leo Spitzer as a method, the phenomenon of personification of Lisbon in fado, first by a diachronic perspective and then synchronically. Finally, it investigates what kind of woman Lisbon is, and its relationship with the female street vendors (varinas, saloias, minhotas) and harlots who historically inhabited the city\'s streets but today are present only in the imagination of its people. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the Lisbon-woman and the myth of Maria Severa.

Abstract:
We present preliminary analysis of mid-infrared spectra of M-type and C-type Mira variables. Due to the brightness of this sample, it is straightforward to monitor changes with phase in the infrared spectral features of these regular pulsators. We have spectra of 25 Mira variables, taken with phase, using the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) high-resolution module. Each star has multiple spectra obtained over a one-year period from 2008-09. This is a rich, unique data set due to multiple observations of each star and the high signal-to-noise ratio from quick exposure times to prevent saturation of the IRS instrument. This paper focuses on the 17.6 and 33.2 micron lines shared by M-types and C-types. These are mostly emission lines that change with phase. We discuss preliminary physical diagnostics for the atmospheres based on the lines, as well as possible line identifcations such as fuorescence of metal species.

Abstract:
In his extensive linguistic work, Eugenio Coseriu (Mihaileni, 1921 - Tübingen, 2002), uses literature several times to exemplify theoretical linguistic concepts and even to model them. As is the case with several 20th century scholars (José Ortega y Gasset or Mijaíl Bajtín), Don Quixote is, for Coseriu, a touchstone to formulate reflections that do not apply exclusively to it, as other relevant works of 20th century’s Cervantism, such as Stephen Gilman’s or and Edward C. Riley’s, do. This article seeks to trace the references of Don Quixote and Cervantes in Coseriu’s work and, above all, to present and discuss the correction made by Coseriu to Leo Spitzer’s “Perspectivismo lingüístico en el Quijote”.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
We show some preliminary 10-37 micron high-resolution spectra taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope in 2008-9 of Mira variables distributed across the M, S and C chemical subclasses. Our entire Spitzer sample of 25 galactic Miras was observed from two to several times during this observing campaign and all have simultaneously measured near-infrared interferometric diameters acquired using the Palomar Testbed Interferometer. Because our sources are very bright for Spitzer IRS (typically 5-100 Janskys), we have excellent signal to noise and for many sources see marked changes in overall flux levels as a function of phase. Further, we are able to identify many strong emission lines and emission features due to silicate and carbon dusts and molecular constituents. We introduce the sample and the design of our experiment, discuss the data reduction required for such bright sources using Spitzer, show several examples of spectra with phase and discuss some preliminary findings. Finally, we discuss future steps for Paper II, to be presented later in the year.

Abstract:
With the goal of studying ML along the RGB, mid-IR observations of a carefully selected sample of 17 Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) with different metallicity and horizontal branch (HB) morphology have been secured with IRAC on board Spitzer: a global sample counting about 8000 giant has been obtained. Suitable complementary photometry in the optical and near-IR has been also secured in order to properly characterize the stellar counterparts to the Spitzer sources and their photospheric parameters. Stars with color (i.e. dust) excess have been identified, their likely circumstellar emission quantified and modelled, and empirical estimates of mass loss rates and timescales obtained. We find that mass loss rates increases with increasing stellar luminosity and decreasing metallicity. For a given luminosity, we find that ML rates are systematically higher than the prediction by extrapolating the Reimers law. CMDs constructed from ground based near-IR and IRAC bands show that at a given luminosity some stars have dusty envelopes and others do not. From this, we deduce that the mass loss is episodic and is ``on'' for some fraction of the time. The total mass lost on the RGB can be easily computed by multiplying ML rates by the ML timescales and integrating over the evolutionary timescale. The average total mass lost moderately increases with increasing metallicity, and for a given metallicity is systematically higher in clusters with extended blue HB.

Full text
Abstract:
The recent detections of two transit events attributed to the super-Earth candidate K2-18b have provided the unprecedented prospect of spectroscopically studying a habitable-zone planet outside the solar system. Orbiting a nearby M2.5 dwarf and receiving virtually the same stellar insolation as Earth, K2-18b would be a prime candidate for the first detailed atmospheric characterization of a habitable-zone exoplanet using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Here, we report the detection of a third transit of K2-18b near the predicted transit time using the Spitzer Space Telescope. The Spitzer detection demonstrates the periodic nature of the two transit events discovered by K2, confirming that K2-18 is indeed orbited by a super-Earth in a 33 day orbit, ruling out the alternative scenario of two similarly sized, long-period planets transiting only once within the 75 day Kepler Space Telescope (K2) observation. We also find, however, that the transit event detected by Spitzer occurred 1.85 hr (7 sigma) before the predicted transit time. Our joint analysis of the Spitzer and K2 photometry reveals that this early occurrence of the transit is not caused by transit timing variations, but the result of an inaccurate ephemeris due to a previously undetected data anomaly in the K2 photometry. We refit the ephemeris and find that K2-18b would have been lost for future atmospheric characterizations with HST and JWST if we had not secured its ephemeris shortly after the discovery. We caution that immediate follow-up observations as presented here will also be critical for confirming and securing future planets discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), in particular if only two transit events are covered by the relatively short 27-day TESS campaigns.

Abstract:
Rotational phase mapping of brown dwarfs allows exploration of different cloud and photospheric properties within the same atmospheres, allowing a separation of these parameters from global parameters, such as composition, surface gravity, and age. This work presents an in-depth characterization of high SNR light curves from the Spitzer Space Telescope with up to 13 hours of continuous monitoring of four dwarfs spanning the L3 to L8 spectral type. An exhaustive exploration of currently available state-of-the-art models explains the observed color changes for two of these dwarfs with a linear combination of two model cloudy surfaces differing in effective temperature, cloud opacity and vertical mixing. Using state-of-the-art purely radiative convective atmospheric models, we calculate basic radiative timescales for temperature perturbations in the atmosphere, and consider the effects of dynamics on these timescales. Along with dynamical atmospheric advection timescales, we discuss the relationships between model timescales and the observed light curve evolution.
