Bettin Lattes, Gianfranco, and Marco Bontempi, eds. Generazione Erasmus? Florence: Firenze University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-8453-802-4.

Abstract:
The Erasmus programme is one of the outstanding Community initiatives, even if it is spoken little of outside the world of the university. This book, one of the first devoted to the subject, analyses the virtuous effects that the programme has had on the university system, the geography of student flows, and the motivations and propositions of those who have taken part in it. The reports of the students indicate the Erasmus as a 'bubble of experience' and the book explores these inner experiences through a sociological approach, illustrating the vast potential in terms of the moulding of a 'homo novus Europaeus'. The data gathered prompt a reflection on the redefinition of the role of the student when he or she directly experiences the comparison with a context different and distant from that of origin, to which he or she is nevertheless destined to return. From this perspective, the Erasmus experience assumes the significance of a sort of temporary upheaval of status open to forms of 'experimentation of identity'.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic has had unprecedented and dramatic consequences on the cultural activities and the development of tourism in italian cities. In the midst of this scenario, the Department of History, Archeology, Geography, Art, and the Performing Arts (SAGAS) of the University of Florence organized three days of online conferences in which representatives of political and cultural institutions, along with qualified observers, expressed their views on the future of cultural policy after the health crisis. This book is a collection of all those “voices on the future of our heritage” that spoke in this series of videoconferences. This publication aims at ensuring that they can be heard by a wider audience, to start a reflection on the possibility of redesigning Florence’s cultural and touristic offerings. To bring about such a change, it is necessary to think within a new framework, one that aims at integrating itineraries capable of embracing the entire city, its histories, and its communities.

van Miert, Dirk. The Biblical Philology of Daniel Heinsius (1619–1640). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803935.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 4 assesses the biblical annotations of Scaliger’s star pupil, Daniel Heinsius. Recognizing the increasing currency of biblical philology, Heinsius published two massive tomes displaying his New Testariment scholarship, his versatility in Greek, and his apparent mastering of Hebrew. Yet, the results of his studies were diffuse. Heinsius subjected himself to the control of the professors of theology of his own university, and he was reticent with his textual criticism. Instead, he concentrated on criticizing the work of Theodorus Beza and on advancing his theory that New Testament Greek was not merely koine Greek with Hebrew and Aramaic influences, but a ‘Hellenistic dialect’ spoken by the native Greek-speaking Jews. Heinsius’s annotations show that it is not useful to attempt to place biblical philology on a one-dimensional scale between orthodoxy on the one hand and radicalism on another, but also that mainstream philology was welcomed by many.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Edith Penrose’s childhood and family background in California and early life in road camps on Highway One along the Pacific coast with her family, including two younger brothers. Her father George Tilton was the surveyor of the road. Edith was a student activist at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was the forensics commissioner, excelled at debating, and spoke at a peace rally. She married at the age of 19 to her first husband David Denhardt, a lawyer, who, after graduating, practised law in Colusa in the Sacramento Valley. She studied under Ernest Francis Penrose, an English economics professor, and became his assistant. She graduated in 1936 but spent a further semester as Penrose’s research assistant before joining her husband. The chapter is set against the Great Depression and the rise of fascism in Europe.
