The term Steroid, denotes any of a class of natural or synthetic organic compounds characterized by a molecular structure of 17 carbon atoms arranged in four rings. Steroids are important in biology, chemistry, and medicine. They are classified into two major categories; the catabolic and the anabolic steroids. The catabolic steroids include corticosterone cortisone and aldosterone. The maincorticosteroids produced by the adrenal cortex are cortisol and aldosterone

ABSTRACT Steroids are a group of anti-inflammatory drugs, commonly used to treat ocular and systemic conditions. Unmonitored use of steroids especially in eye drop formulations is common in situations when it is easily available over-the-counter, resulting in undesirable side effects. Among the ocular side effects, cataract and glaucoma are common. Steroid-induced ocular hypertension was reported in 1950, when long-term use of systemic steroid was shown to increase the intraocular pressure (IOP). Chronic administration of steroids in any form with raised IOP can cause optic neuropathy resultin

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is an immune-mediated inflammatory airway disease that predominantly affects patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and, less commonly, patients with asthma. ABPA can lead to irreversible lung injury and bronchiectasis if not treated early and aggressively. Long-term oral steroids are the standard therapy of ABPA. However, it is associated with an increased risk of steroids side effects and possible medication noncompliance. Monthly intravenous pulse methylprednisolone (IV-PS) has been used as an alternative to oral steroids to treat CF-related ABPA w

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used in equine veterinary practice. These drugs exert their effect by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which control prostaglandin production, a major regulator of tissue perfusion. Two isoforms of COX enzymes exist: COX-1 is physiologically present in tissues, while COX-2 is up-regulated during inflammation and has been indicated as responsible for the negative effects of an inflammatory response. Evidence suggests that NSAIDs that inhibit only COX-2, preserving the physiological function of COX-1 might have a safer profile. St

The most useful drugs in the management of nephrotic syndrome are the corticosteroids. These drugs are as well known for their adverse effects as they are for their therapeutic advantages. The two most common paediatric side effects are suppression of linear growth and posterior subcapsular cataracts. Both of these untoward effects are insiduous and therefore less easily perceived. Although many workers have studied the growth inhibiting effects of the corticosteroids in the various diseases e.g. asthma, very little work was done to investigate these effects in patients with nephrotic syndrome

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: We will use a meta-regression approach to verify the dose-effect relationship between the number of electroacupuncture sessions and its effects on migraine. Condition being studied: Migraine is recurrent and chronic, requiring long-term control, but the side effects caused by long-term use limit the use of pharmacotherapy, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), ergoamines and opioids. With fewer side effects and lower cost, acupuncture is becoming a more attractive option for migraine. Relevant studies have confirmed the clinical effects of electroacu

Abstract:
The vital role of the prostanoid pathway in inflammation, pain, cancer, Alzheimer’s and many other diseases has attracted the drug discovery community to discover targets for therapeutic development. Although existing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) inhibiting cyclooxygenases (COX) are widely used, the side effects of these NSAIDs limit the ling time medication. Microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) is an attractive target that is overexpressed during inflammations, and it could be a safe alternative to NSAIDs for treating inflammatory diseases.Since the discovery of m

Abstract:
The general research objective was to increase herd pregnancy rates by enhancing corpus luteum (CL) function and optimizing follicle development, in order to increase conception rate and embryo survival. The specific objectives were: to determine the effect of the duration of the preovulatory LH surge on CL function; to determine the function of LH during the postovulatory period on CL development; to optimize CL differentiation and follicle development by means of a biodegradable GnRH implant; to test whether optimization of CL development and follicle dynamics in timed- insemination protocol
