Abstract:
The article analyzes the concept of “stylistic competence”, which is defined as the ability to learn the stylistic system of the language at the phonetic, lexical-semantic, phraseological and grammatical levels. The main concepts of stylistics have been clarified. The object and subject of studying stylistics have been characterized. Such sections of stylistics as stylistics of language, stylistics of speech and stylistics of fiction have been studied. The concept of “language style” and “speech style” has been distinguished. The problem of compliance with stylistic norms and features of formation of stylistic abilities and skills has been outlined. The linguistic-didactic system for the formation of students’ stylistic competence has been defined, which includes: approaches to learning (functional-stylistic, which ensures effective work on the representation of the features of the functioning of language units, their implementation in each style; the formation of fluency in speaking skills), learning patterns (patterns of language learning and patterns of speech learning); teaching principles (general didactic and linguistic didactic); groups of exercises (according to the content of the main material, according to the method of execution) and specific methods (observation of stylistic functions of language units, stylistic experiment; stylistic editing; stylistic construction).

Abstract:
This paper examines the theoretical foundations of stylistic analysis, underlining its conceptual orientation and linguistic characteristics. As a subfield of linguistics, stylistics studies how (and why) language use varies according to different contexts (with a focus on phonetic, lexical, grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic features). It discusses the main approaches to stylistic analysis: formalist, functional, cognitive, and corpus stylistics. It also emphasizes typing style devices like alliteration, metaphor, and irony, forming the meaning of the text and the perception of the reader. These investigations highlight the relevance of stylistic investigation in both literary and non-literary discourse and show how such work can uncover abstract linguistic and communicative functions.

Abstract:
We analyze the particular functions of such metaphors as synesthesia and personification in a literary text. The purpose of study is to identify the stylistic potential of synesthesia and personification in a literary text. The relevance of topic is due to the need to investigate the stylistic functions of the above metaphors in the prose of Austrian authors, little-known and therefore insufficiently researched in domestic stylistics. The material of research is the prose of Austrian authors. In particular, the intentional selection of works created at different times allowed to better focus on metaphors featured by structures and functions. We explore the stylistic potential of metaphors, which is understood as the ability of these linguistic means to implement certain stylistic functions. We conclude as follows: 1) the language of Austrian writers of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries is characterized by metaphors that make up the aesthetic value of their works; 2) an important role in achieving the figurativeness of a literary text is played by the expressive means of the language, in particular, synesthesia and personification; 3) these varieties of metaphor have sufficient stylistic potential to implement the main functions in the artistic style, namely, characterological, descriptive, emotive and evaluative; 4) the metaphor is characterized by multifunctionality, which makes it possible to combine the description with the tasks of characterization, expression and evaluation. The data obtained constitute the theoretical significance of study and as well can be used in teaching philology students.

Stylistic Features of Metonymy in English and Azerbaijani Languages Summary This article is devoted to the study of the stylistic features of metonymy in English and Azerbaijani. Theoretical materials and literary texts from linguistics in both English and Azerbaijani are used to provide a basis for comparison. The similarities between metonymic models in both languages allow us to conclude that their stylistic formations and functions within the language of literary texts are similar. They often coincide completely. The stylistic weight of metonymy serves as an indicator of an author’s unique style, as it makes the language in fiction texts imaginative and aesthetically pleasing. Abstract:
This article is devoted to the study of stylistic functions of metaphorical epithets in a poetic text. Many works are devoted to metaphor, which apparently occupies the main place among the linguistic means of expressing images. However, the question of the stylistic functions of metaphorical epithets is still not fully clarified. One of the laws of language development is manifested in the metaphorization of words, but the metaphorical meaning of a word is manifested only in context, thanks to the movement of the word into a new lexical environment. According to the established scientific tradition, it is customary to distinguish between general-language and individual-author metaphorization, while the functions of general-language and individual-author (poetic) metaphors are different: through general-language metaphorization, first of all, the expansion of the meaning of a word is achieved; in a poetic text, a metaphor gives a condensed characteristic of a particular subject, often claiming to penetrate into its essence, and it is aimed at revealing his individuality. The quality of metaphorical formations is also influenced by the genre in which the literary work is created. Depending on the genre and style of the work, there are not only techniques, but also means of metaphorization. Artistic methods also impose a certain seal on metaphorization. Analysis of metaphorical epithets in the light of the stated general provisions on metaphor and the essence of metaphorization based on the poems of A.S. Pushkin "The Caucasian Prisoner", M.Y. Lermontov "Mtsyri", I.S. Nikitin "Kulak" and N.A. Nekrasov's "Frost, Red Nose" showed that metaphorical epithets can be created by qualitative and relative adjectives. At the same time, common-language metaphorical epithets most often represent stable expressions of a living spoken language and thus indicate the nationality of the language, emphasize the national specifics of the works. In the creation of individual metaphorical epithets, the innovation of poets in the field of metaphorical creativity is clearly manifested, and a significant increase in the proportion of evaluative metaphorical epithets in the poems of Nikitin and Nekrasov, compared with the poems of Pushkin and Lermontov, is an undeniable consequence of their social orientation.

Abstract:
Divine retribution is both a teaching and a core-tenet in Christianity. A large portion of Biblical texts come to embody the righteous judgment of the Almighty Lord, His gracious as well as wrath character. This paper is an attempt to pinpoint the stylistic devices and features of retribution in Biblical texts. It aims to identify the stylistic phonological, syntactic, and semantic devices of retribution in Biblical texts and find out the function of each. Furthermore, it aims to explain the overall functions such texts of retribution perform and how the overall function of these texts and the functions of the utilized stylistic devices are coalesced to produce a stylistic interpretation to these texts. It is hypothesized that Biblical texts of retribution utilize specific stylistic phonological, syntactic, and semantic devices. Besides, it is hypothesized that the functions these devices perform fall in line with the overall functions the Biblical texts of retribution have. A model is developed to analyze the Biblical texts of retribution. In addition, statistical findings are used to support the results. The findings of the analysis validate the hypotheses mentioned above.

Abstract:
Critical Stylistics is concerned with the study of ideology in literary and political texts. It draws on certain criteria from the stylistic analysis. Thus, this paper attempts to apply Jeffries’ (2010) model of critical stylistics to soliloquies of Shakespearean Hamlet. It specifically aims at analyzing the two soliloquies made by the character Hamlet using only three textual-conceptual functions of the model: Representing Actions/ Events/ States; Exemplifying and Enumerating; and Hypothesizing. These functions are adopted here because they somehow represent what the character is saying loudly. The data is analyzed qualitatively to show how the tools are used and then quantitatively to show how many times these same tools are used. This paper concludes that Shakespeare’s language is ideologically loaded and there are discrepancies in the frequency and function of these tools. Besides, the frequency of these tools proves how the ideology is enforced through the language of the text.

Abstract:
The author considers the problem of stylistic functions of linguistic units in modern Russian prose works through analyzing phraseological units in the detectives of B. Akunin. The article presents the most frequent types of phraseological units (idioms, set phrases, proverbs, sayings, popular expressions and other types of clichéd utterances) as representation of a personal literary style of this author. The research results point to their stylistic variety with high literary, colloquial, low colloquial, and slang units among them. The major types of phraseological unit conversion are distinguished as a prove of the writer's personal style, including, complete deformation of a component composition of a set phrase, reduction of the lexical length of phraseological units (implication), distribution of any component composition of the unit (explication), combining two or more phraseological units into a single set expression (contamination), replacement of a component in the composition of phraseological units with words of general literary layers (lexical variation), etc. The stylistic functions of all phraseological units under study are interpreted as retro-representation of the language of a certain time period, stylistic imitation of the communicative tone of oral speech, verbal characteristics of the characters who are referred to various social groups, and creation of humorous tone of the story. A comprehensive description of phraseological units used in modern fiction has revealed their artistic and stylistic potential.

Abstract:
The article describes one of expressive syntax techniques, namely parcelled constructions, identified in B.L. Vasilyev’s novella "The Dawns Here Are Quiet". The stylistic and syntactic functions of parcelling are determined and analysed using structural-semantic and functional stylistic analysis. The article concludes that parcelling as a stylistic device is a universal phenomenon of a multifunctional nature. It facilitates the implementation of the author’s various pragmatic ideas. Besides the main stylistic function, i. e. the function of expressively highlighting a certain part of the utterance, parcelled sentences perform several additional functions in a literary text: figurative, characterological, emotional-emphatic, expressive-grammatical. It is revealed that the syntactic functions of parcels in the novella are diverse. In simple sentences, they can be both their main and secondary parts. In composite sentences, they function as the predicative part which is attached to the main utterance using a subordinating, coordinating, or asyndetic connection. The variety of stylistic and syntactic functions of parcelled constructions enabled B. Vasilyev to realistically convey the atmosphere of the pre-war and war periods. He managed to describe the protagonists’ characters and their actions in a true to life way, making the narrative sound natural.

The paper argues that corpus linguistics can make useful contributions to the descriptive inventory of literary stylistics. The concept of local textual functions is employed as a descriptive tool for the stylistic analysis of a corpus of texts by Charles Dickens. It is suggested that clusters, i.e. repeated sequences of words, can be interpreted as pointers to local textual functions. The focus is on five-word clusters and five functional groups are identified: Labels, Speech clusters, As If clusters, Body Part clusters and Time and Place clusters. The analysis draws on the identification of key clusters comparing the Dickens corpus with a corpus of nineteenth-century fiction, it identifies links to literary criticism and it gives specific attention to the group of Body Part clusters to illustrate the functional variation of clusters.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the stylistic peculiarities that are associated with legislative texts. This is done through the purviews of Halliday’s (1971) grapho-stylistics and Mukarovsky’s (1964) concepts of foregrounding and deviation. Legislative proclamations and treaties are veritable and fertile grounds for textual hermeneutics from both linguistic and legal orientations. This present study, however, presents a new frontier as it focuses on the graphological patterning inherent in a selected treaty-based legislative text namely the International Covenant on Economics, Social and Cultural Rights 1976 (ICESCR). The paper finds that stylistic elements at the graphological level are intentionally employed for their inevitability for meaning processing of the text. The resources such as sectionalisation, paragraphing, italicization, synoptic listing/numbering, spacing and other textual arrangement of the document are occasioned for their intended communicativeness rather than for aesthetic glorification. They all perform deliberate stylistic functions of presenting and framing information that conspicuously call the attention of the readers to the intents of the text owing to their unusualness. The researchers recommend that more scholarly efforts be expended on this interesting genre of textual presentation.

Abstract:
The study is intended to stylistically analyze a sample of three American military creeds. The study hypothesizes that American military creeds have their own stylistic properties which make them distinct texts, and that the stylistic devices employed in military creeds vary in terms of their frequencies and functions. The study also hypothesizes that military creeds are situationally based, and that the employed stylistic devices have a complementary role. They all contribute together to fulfill the creeds’ aims and convey their intended messages. To achieve the aims of the study, and verify its hypotheses, two types of procedure are followed: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part consists of presenting a theoretical framework of style and stylistics including their historical background, types, approaches, models of analysis, etc. Another theoretical framework is also presented about military discourse and creeds including their historical background, terminology, features, etc. On the other hand, the practical part consists of selecting a sample of three military creeds and analyzing them in the light of Crystal and Davy’s (1969) model which accounts for situational elements. The adopted model consists of five dimensions: individuality, discourse, status, modality, and singularity. The results of analysis show that military creeds have their own distinctive stylistic features. The results also show that the stylistic devices characterizing military creeds have a complementary role in that they all contribute together to achieve the creeds’ aims and convey their intended messages.

Abstract:
Stylistic expressive means of the language are phonetic, lexical, phraseological and syntactical forms that exist in the language as a system for the purpose of logical and emotional intensification of the utterance [1, 93]. These intensifying forms, wrought by social usage and recognized by their semantic function, have been singled out in textbooks as having special functions in making the utterances emphatic. Stylistic expressive means and stylistic devices introduce connotational (stylistic, non-denotative) meanings into utterances. According to the principles of their formation, stylistic devices are grouped into phonetic, lexico-semantic and syntactic types.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of stylistic features of personal pronouns in modern poetic texts. It is noted that the poetic text represents personal pronouns as those that open the way to the depths of the author's feelings and artistic imagery. Personal pronouns are considered to change their grammatical form according to the context. This allows them to have an even greater influence on the semantic content and emotional sphere of poetry, expand the possibilities of language and allow the expression of the most complex feelings and thoughts. The proposed investigation reveals the potential of personal pronouns, which are a morphological element of language and help to convey the deepest feelings, becoming part of the world of the poetic work of the war period. It has been established that the use of personal pronouns can significantly change the tone and emotional intensity of the text, giving it a personal and intimate tone; significantly modifies the evaluative and expressive parameters of speech; is a constituent element of internal dialogue and a construct of rhetorical questions and common appeals.

Abstract:
The article consideres the problem of forming the meta-language of literary onomastics. It is shown that today the methodological principles of this naming section are completely unspecified. Meta-language of literary onomastics is based on terms of general onomastics. The term “literary onomastics” is not established, and some linguists use combinations such as poetic onomastics, stylistic onomastics, onomapoetics , literary-artistic onomastics. Special attention is required to study the function of proper names, distinction of the integral system of functions of proper names, realized within an artistic text. In the literary texts the function of proper names (to nominate, to identify) begins to perform another - stylistic, in particular: informational stylistic and emotional stylistic. This may become a fact of speech, if it overflows the text and is used in the speech as a common name. Proper names, the meanings of which coexist with general or individual connotations, are called connotative proper names (Ye. Otin’s term “connotonyms”). A number of functions performed by poetonyms (poetic proper names) is nominative, chronotypical, characterizing, expressive, text-creative and figurative. But the problem of poetonyms classification and their functions in the literary texts is still actual.

Introduction. The purpose of the work is to consider synonyms as lexical devices, their communicative and stylistic role in the Moksha language. The subject of the research is synonyms and their functions, the object is the Moksha language. Materials and Methods. The material for the study is the synonyms collected from bilingual and multilingual dictionaries and used in the works of Moksha writers. Results and Discussion. Synonyms in the Moksha language play a certain communicative and stylistic role. Structural, semantic and stylistic features of various types of synonyms are clearly shown in their main functions in the text. Stylistic synonyms, due to the interaction of the emotive and significative aspects of meaning, can cause their semantic “thickening”, therefore they can express a greater degree of quality, properties, actions in comparison with the corresponding neutral words, acting as a means of gradation. Conclusion. The use of synonyms in oral and written speech significantly increases the level of speech culture.

Abstract:
This article deals with the role and place of stylistic devices in a work of art in the literary pragmatics context. Operating on the level "author - work - reader", literary pragmatics offers an interpretation of the text together in the light of hidden information. The paper focuses on the stylistic analysis of the author’s descriptions of the supporting characters in Richard Aldington's novel “Death of a Hero” and defining the pragmatic functions of the given stylistic devices as source of implicit information. In addition to characterizing his characters through their speech Richard Aldington makes use of direct descriptions. While stylistic figures in the dialogues help to and understand the way of thinking of characters, phonetic and graphic stylistic devices often indicate their social background or emotional state, it’s authors descriptions that make us assess the situation better, pinpointing certain personal features. The most frequently used stylistic devices in the direct descriptions are of a lexical stratum. Not only they enrich the language of a novel, but also allow the author manipulate his readers, “lead them by the hand” in the needed direction and implicitly influence their perception of the characters. It is thanks to the stylistic devices that the author implicitly manages to explain that there has always been an abyss of misunderstanding between the protagonist and his surrounding, regardless of where he was at a certain stage of life. The contrast of the use of tropes in the descriptions of the supporting characters is a tale-telling sign in itself, and that is a particularly important pragmatic function of the stylistic devices usage.

Abstract:
The article describes one of the lexical-stylistic categories, i. e., usual and occasional antonymy, identified in A. T. Tvardovsky’s epic poem "Vasily Tyorkin". The stylistic functions of antonym pairs are determined and analysed by structural semantic and functional stylistic methods. The article concludes that different types of antonyms and stylistic devices created on their basis are a polyfunctional phenomenon contributing to the implementation of various pragmatic ideas of the writer. Usual and occasional antonym pairs are employed to indicate the limit of manifestation of actions, a person’s physical and mental state; to highlight the important and the significant; to strengthen the image, the impression made; to express the assessment of opposite actions; to affirm opposite qualities, actions, and so on. The poem has been found to widely use antithesis (and its types), oxymoron, and antiphrasis, i. e., stylistic devices based on semantic and evaluative antonymy. Antithesis is employed to create the key semantic oppositions of the work such as "our own – alien", "Russian – German", "love – war". Oxymoron enhances literary speech expressiveness. Antiphrasis is used to make the literary text sound humorous and ironic. The variety of the stylistic functions of antonyms enabled Tvardovsky to realistically convey the wartime atmosphere, describe the protagonist’s and other characters’ disposition and actions, as well as to add emotionality and expressiveness to the narrative.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION. The relevance of the study is substantiated by the necessity of studying the means of newspaper discourse which is an integral part of the modern media and informational space. The purpose of the study is to identify the types of one-member verb sentences used in the newspaper language, determine the frequency of different types and analyze their stylistic functions in newspaper texts.MATERIALS AND METHODS. The research material is the publications of the newspaper “Arguments and Facts”. The methods used are the method of solid sampling, statistical method, methods of structural-semantic and functional-stylistic analysis of linguistic units, contextual analysis.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. 455 one-member verb sentences are identified; the frequency of their types is determined. It is found that in newspaper publications impersonal constructions are presented in the greatest number, followed by definite-personal and indefinite-personal, the frequency of which in the newspaper language is approximately the same. The fourth place is occupied by infinitive sentences. The minimum number of generalizedpersonal constructions is represented.CONCLUSION. Definite-personal sentences are active in the newspaper language as a source of brevity, dynamism, expressiveness. Indefinite-personal sentences make newspaper texts lively and light, emphasize the reader's attention to the action without mentioning the subject. Generalized-personal constructions are used to involve the reader in the described events, “generalization” of the author with the audience. Impersonal sentences are primarily characteristic of the interview genre, which conveys the features of oral speech. Infinitive sentences are used to convey the speech of the interlocutor in a dialog and the judgments of the author of the publication; to reproduce an aphoristic statement; to attract the readers' attention to the content of the article as part of the subheading; to attract the attention of potential consumers in advertising texts.

Abstract:
The present research explores the choice of adjectives as a lexical category in Mohsin Hamid’s novel, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by using Leech and Short model (1981). An empirical enquiry is carried out to trace the author’s choice of adjectives and their intended functions by subjecting How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia to stylistic analysis and linguistic scrutiny. The various functions of adjectives are interpreted after the text is subjected to close reading for their contextual occurrence where they are carefully engraved by the author. The resultant functions throw ample light on the life, culture, economic scenario and love and gender relations construed in the text through adjectives. The present paper, however, is limited only to the interpretation of the adjective categories based on the model suggested by Leech & Short (1981). This study is, therefore, instrumental in initiating a voyage to interpret literary language via linguistic tools and evidences contributing amply to the field of stylistics as well as literary criticism.

Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša, a talented narrator and stylist, has achieved a complete harmony between motifs, themes and the manner of narration. He has achieved not only a vertical harmony, but also a horizontal one which relates between the sound and the meaning of a word. Various verb forms, their synonyms as well as great possibilities of their combining have significantly enabled creation of this harmony. The language of Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša has a very significant stylistic potential. The various meanings and multi-layered structures of the verb forms are the product of the affective attitude of the narrator which stems from the aspiration of the narrator to use the most expressive verb form (the verb form and its synonym). The subtle shading of the logical and grammatical and stylistic functions of the verb forms creates a very strong expression and rhythmicity.

Abstract:
In the corpus of modern Chinese news discourse, there exists a phenomenon of referentiality involving verbal elements, referred to as event anaphora. Its connotations exhibit distinct differences from similar concepts such as event nouns, cohesive connections, and deixis. This paper investigates the inherent distinctions of event anaphora from three perspectives: structural types, sentence components, and the frequency of reference. Additionally, incorporating discourse and stylistic considerations, the study offers three explanations for biases observed in statistics: the stylistic inclination of "this," the referential target and objective mechanism of the object, and the information structural impact of the frequency of reference.
