Abstract:

In this Doctoral Thesis, through several examples of new chemical modifications characterized by high yields and selectivities and new supramolecular structures, held together by a wide range of intermolecular forces forming several new host systems, we reached our target to revamp triphenylene and derivatives as a new molecular scaffold in supramolecular chemistry. More specifically, the introduction in our triphenylenic scaffold of alkyl thiol chains allowed the formation of sulphide and disulphide covalent cages, while by insertion of pyridine moieties through Mannich reaction it was possib

The results obtained in this thesis demonstrate the importance of supramolecular chemistry for the design of potential new SCO clusters. Starting from synthesizing the suitable ligands with suitable functional groups, novel host-guest systems could be obtained where the guest play a major role in tuning the physical properties of the guest. Two bis-pyrazolylpyridine lignads, H2L4 and H2L6 were designed and prepared to achieve the assembly of transition metal ions in a triple-stranded helicate fashion where the central cavity can encapsulate different counterions depending on the size of thi

The field of organic electronics has received much attention over the last few years, and engineering of organic crystals to grow with pi-electron systems arranged in a face-to-face motif has been shown to be beneficial in electronic devices. The effects of combining aromatic and perfluorinated aromatic derivatives have shown that the intramolecular stacking pattern can be changed from an edge-to-face arrangement to that of a face-to-face motif. Before the work described herein, there were no reported studies of the supramolecular behavior of fused polycyclic aromatic compounds with partial pe

The solubility and dissolution profiles of the three compounds and those of selected ‘supramolecularly-derived’ species were also assessed. Abstract:
The set of molecules cucurbit[n]uril (Qn) are macrocycles composed of n glycoluril monomers linked by methylene groups. These molecules have two oxygen-ringed portals of a diameter slightly smaller than their internal cavity diameter. This thesis describes syntheses, crystallisations, crystal structure determinations, crystal packing analyses and force field calculations exploring the supramolecular chemistry of Qn molecules and their derivatives. Qn acts as a host for guest molecules and at the outset of this project no metal containing molecule had been encapsulated in a Qn molecule. One aim
