Abstract:
This project discusses the intensity and survival probability derived from Credit Default Swaps (CDS). We utilize two models, the reduced intensity model and the Shift Square Root Diffusion (SSRD) model. In the reduced intensity model, we assume a deterministic intensity and implement a computer simulation to derive the survival probability and intensity from the CDS market quotes of the company. In the SSRD model, the interest rate and intensity are both stochastic and correlated. We discuss the impaction of correlation on the interest rate and intensity. Previous studies have found that the socioeconomic risk factors education, income and family type were independently associated with mortality after first myocardial infarction (MI). In this population-based cohort study we study how these socioeconomic risk factors are related to the mortality among first MI survivors within 365 days. To this end, we use the four-way decomposition analysis which decomposes the total effect of the exposure into the effect that is due to only mediation, due to only interaction, due to both mediation and interaction and due to neither mediation nor interaction.

Many of the open problems of current interest in probability and statistics involve complicated data sets that do not satisfy the strong assumptions of being independent and identically distributed. Often, the samples are known only empirically, and making assumptions about underlying parametric distributions is not warranted by the insufficient information available. Under such circumstances, the usual Fisher or parametric Bayes approaches cannot be used to model the data or make predictions.

Abstract:
Freshwater mussels (Unionidae) in the United States have experienced dramatic declines, and 25% species are listed as federally endangered. Hence, recovery plans for endangered species proposed a strategy of propagation of young mussels for release to natal rivers to augment declining populations. In this study, I conducted laboratory experiments, assessed site suitability for mussel restoration, and evaluated survival and growth rates of released mussels to meet the requirements of recovery plan. I conducted multiple experiments to develop an improved protocol for juvenile mussel propagatio

Documenting life history characteristics of populations, especially of herbivorous insects such as butterflies, is fundamental to the ecological study of tropical rainforests. However, we know relatively little about tropical forest butterflies. Here, I combine information gathered using the mark-release-recapture (MRR) approach with manipulative and observational experiments in a natural environment to explore aspects of the population biology of three closely-related species of Costa Rican fruit-feeding understory butterflies (Cithaerias pireta, Dulcedo polita, and Pierella helvina), specifi

Abstract:
Survival analysis is an effective tool for conservation studies, since it measure the risk of an event that is important for the survival of populations and preservation of biodiversity. In this thesis three different models for survival analysis are used to estimate the age at breeding between two genetically different populations of brown trout. These populations are an evolutionary enigma, since they apparently coexist in direct competition with each other, which according to ecological theory should not happen. Thus it is of interest if differences between them can be identified. The data

Abstract:
In this thesis, the structural model in credit risk and the credit derivatives is studied under both Black-Scholes setting and Variance Gamma (VG) setting. Using a Variance Gamma process, the distribution of the firm value process becomes asymmetric and leptokurtic. Also, the jump structure of VG processes allows random default times of the reference entities. Among structural models, the most emphasis is made on the Black-Cox model by building a relation between the survival probabilities of the Black-Cox model and the value of a binary down and out barrier option. The survival probabilities
