Golla, Marco. "Ozsváth-Szabó invariants of contact surgeries." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2012. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/265538.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I am going to deal with contact manifolds of dimension three: these are orientable manifolds with a plane field that is nowhere tangent to a surface. Contact manifolds split into two families, the overtwisted ones and the tight ones, according to the presence or absence of a certain embedded disc. While the overtwisted ones are classified by homotopy data only, tight contact structures are much harder to study, and only a handful of classification results are known. I am going to study what happens when doing contact surgeries along Legendrian links in S 3 : more specifically, I am going to look at contact manifolds through the eyes of Heegaard Floer homology, by computing their Ozsvath-Szab6 invariants. It's a classical result that doing negative contact surgeries along Legendrian links in ( S3, tst) yields back tight (in fact, Stein fillable) contact structures, so I am going to discuss positive contact surgeries. The main result gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the nonvanishing of the contact invariant, in terms of computable, integer-valued invariants of the knot and the surgery coefficient. On one hand, this gives many new examples of tight contact manifolds, and on the other hand it gives obstructions to fillability of contact manifolds in most cases. Some of the techniques developed in the proof also allow me to refine the result to deal with some positive rational surgeries. This work has been inspired by earlier works of Lisca and Stipsicz, and the Floertheoretic part is mostly a refinement of their results. In recent years, they dealt with the problem of computing the invariant for positive contact surgeries using "classical" Heegaard Floer homology: here I push further and us~ sutured and bordered Floer homology to get more control on some of their intermediate lemmas. I also turn some of their topological statements into algebraic statements about certain gluing maps associated to surgeries, acting on sutured Floer homology. On the topological side, the bulk of the thesis is a detailed study of the interactions between the Legendrian cabling construction and contact surgeries.

Lekili, Yankı. "Broken Lefschetz fibrations, Lagrangian matching invariants and Ozsváth-Szabó invariants." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/49881.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mathematics, 2009.<br>This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 141-145).<br>Broken Lefschetz fibrations are a new way to depict smooth 4-manifolds and to investigate their topology; for instance, Perutz defines invariants of 4-manifolds by counting J-holomorphic sections of these fibrations. The first part of this thesis is about the calculus of these objects. In particular, based on earlier results we prove the existence of broken Lefschetz fibrations on any smooth oriented closed 4-manifold and describe certain topological manipulations of these objects, to construct new broken Lefschetz fibration, e.g. with better properties from other ones. The second part is about Perutz's invariants for broken Lefschetz fibrations, the corresponding invariants for 3-manifolds mapping to S1, and relating these invariants to Ozsváth-Szabó 3 and 4-manifold invariants. Specifically, we prove an isomorphism between two 3-manifold invariants, namely Perutz's quilted Floer homology and Ozsváth-Szabó Heegaard Floer homology for certain spinc structures. This yields interesting and in a sense simplified geometric interpretations of Ozsváth-Szabó invariants. In particular, we give new calculations of these invariants and other applications, e.g. a proof of Floer's excision theorem in the context of Heegaard Floer homology.<br>by Yankı Lekili.<br>Ph.D.

McCurdy, Marian Lea. "Acting and its refusal in theatre and film." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Theatre and Film Studies, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10038.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines works of theatre and film that explore a refusal of acting. Acting has traditionally been considered as something false or as pretending, in opposition to everyday life, which has been considered as something real and truthful. This has resulted in a desire to refuse acting, evident in the tradition of the anti-theatrical prejudice where acting is considered to be seductive and dangerous. All the works that I examine in this thesis are relatively recent and all of them explore the paradox that in our (postmodern) times a gradual reversal has occurred where everyday life is seen as more and more false or as pretending or simulating (ie. containing acting and theatricality) and conversely, acting in theatre and film has become the place where people have begun searching for reality and truth and where ‘acting’ and pretending in life can be revealed and refused. The result of this paradox - and what I also discuss as a confusion of acting and living - is that the place in which acting can be refused has shifted; the ethical desire to refuse acting (in theatre and in life) is turning up in the aesthetic domain of acting itself. In my first chapter I study works by filmmaker István Szabó and playwright Werner Fritsch, who represent the desire to refuse acting in the context of fascism where theatrical and filmic spectacle was used by the Nazis to seduce the population and where actors during this period also experienced an inability to separate their political and artistic lives. In my second chapter I look at the way Genet’s The Balcony and Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution explore the desire to refuse acting as a result of a confusion of acting and living in the context of sexual (sadomasochistic) role-play. And in my third chapter I examine the way Warhol’s The Chelsea Girls, von Trier’s The Idiots and Affleck’s I’m Still Here represent a refusal of acting and theatricality altogether, responding to the way that ‘acting’ in life may have become an all-pervasive substitute (a simulation) for living. Foundational to the development of this thesis and a major source of material is my analysis of three theatrical productions with Free Theatre Christchurch, directed by Peter Falkenberg, in which I was involved as an actor and in which a refusal of acting was explored.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis primarily focuses on the electrochemical properties of the H2/H+ redox couple, at various metallic electrodes in room temperature ionic liquids. Initially, a comprehensive overview of room temperature ionic liquids, RTILs, compared to conventional organic solvents is presented which identifies their favourable properties and applications, followed by a second chapter describing the basic theory of electrochemistry. A third chapter presents the general experimental reagents, instruments and measurements used in this thesis. The results presented in this thesis are summarized in six further chapters and shown as follows. (1) Hydrogenolysis, hydrogen loaded palladium electrodes by electrolysis of H[NTf2] in a RTIL [C2mim][NTf2]. (2) Palladium nanoparticle-modified carbon nanotubes for electrochemical hydrogenolysis in RTILs. (3) Electrochemistry of hydrogen in the RTIL [C2mim][NTf2]: dissolved hydrogen lubricates diffusional transport. (4) The hydrogen evolution reaction in a room temperature ionic liquid: mechanism and electrocatalyst trends. (5) The formal potentials and electrode kinetics of the proton_hydrogen couple in various room temperature ionic liquids. (6) The electroreduction of benzoic acid: voltammetric observation of adsorbed hydrogen at a Platinum microelectrode in room temperature ionic liquids. The first two studies show electrochemically formed adsorbed H atoms at a metallic Pt or Pd surface can be used for clean, efficient, safe electrochemical hydrogenolysis of organic compounds in RTIL media. The next study shows the physicochemical changes of RTIL properties, arising from dissolved hydrogen gas. The last three studies looked at the electrochemical properties of H2/H+ redox couple at various metallic electrodes over a range of RTILs vs a stable Ag/Ag+ reference couple, using H[NTf2] and benzoic acid as proton sources. The kinetic and thermodynamic mechanisms of some reactions or processes are the same in RTILs as in conventional organic or aqueous solvents, but other remarkably different behaviours are presented. Most importantly significant constants are seen for platinum, gold and molybdenum electrodes in term of the mechanism of proton reduction to form hydrogen.

van, der Smissen Andrea. "Musikalische Innovation im Umfeld der Moderne und historischen Avantgarde in Ungarn." 2020. https://slub.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A72596.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent decades the interpretation of music history of the interwar period was determined by factors which allowed only national or folkloristic approaches to modern music in Hungary. However, the composers of the group ‘Modern Hungarian Musicians’, connected to the forums of the New Music like the ISCM or Cowell‘s NMS, were committed to a transcultural view of musical innovation. Through intermedial connections between literary and fine art, they received non-musical impulses by modern and avantgarde movements. This paper makes an approach on their heterogeneous conception of music with the common sense, to set a renewal of the musical language as its goal.
