Abstract:
Menus are used for exploring and selecting commands in interactive applications. They are widespread in current applications and used by a large variety of users. As a consequence, menus are at the heart of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and motivate many studies in HCI. Facing the large variety of designed menu techniques, it is however difficult to have a clear understanding of the design possibilities, to understand the advances as well as to compare existing menu techniques. In this context, this thesis in HCI proposes a design space of menu techniques called MenUA. MenUA is based on a list of criteria that define a coherent framework of design issues for menus. MenUA also helps application designers to make informed design choices and is a support for exploring design alternatives. Stemming from MenUA, we designed, developed and evaluated four menu techniques: Wave menus, Flower menus, Leaf menus and Multi-Touch Menus. Wave menus improve the novice mode of Marking menus by making the navigation within the hierarchy of commands easier. Flower menus increase the menu breadth of Marking menus while supporting good learning performance of the expert mode. Leaf menus are linear menus enriched by stroke shortcuts to facilitate the selection of commands on small handheld touch-screen devices. Finally, Multi-Touch Menus exploit the recent capabilities of multi-touch surfaces in order to allow the users to explore and select commands using the five fingers of the hands

Abstract:
In this thesis, we address the question of gesture interaction on mobile device. These devices, now common, differ from conventional computers primarily by the input devices the user interact with (screen size small but tactile, various sensors such as accelerometers) as well as the context in which they are used. The work presented here is an exploration of the vast area of interaction techniques on these mobile devices. First we try to structure this space by focusing on the techniques based on accelerometers for which we propose a taxonomy. Its descriptive and discriminant power is validated by and the classification of thirty-seven interaction techniques in the literature. Second we focus on the achievement of gestural interaction techniques for these mobile devices. With TouchOver, we show that it is possible to take advantage of complementary two-channels input (touch screen and accelerometers) to add a state to the finger-drag, thus enriching the interaction. Finally, we focus on mobile device menus and offer a new form of sign language menus. We discuss their implementation with the GeLATI software library that allows their integration into a pre-existing GUI toolkit.

Bratten, Gregory J. "A comparison of marketing techniques of women's and men's NCAA Division I basketball." Scholarly Commons, 1999. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/521.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the marketing techniques perceived to effectively promote attendance at women's and men's NCAA Division I basketball events. Further, efforts were made to determine whether there were any differences in the marketing techniques perceived to be effective in the promotion of attendance between women's and men's basketball programs. The study surveyed sport marketers at NCAA Division I college basketball institutions which had both a women's and a men's basketball program in the 1993-94 basketball season. The marketers responded to the Marketing Technique Questionnaire which contained 25 statements pertaining to marketing techniques. It was hypothesized that there were no significant differences between the perceived effectiveness of the marketing techniques and proportion of seats filled. Also, it was hypothesized that there would be no significant differences in the perceived effectiveness of marketing techniques between NCAA Division I women's basketball and NCAA Division I men's basketball programs in the promotion of attendance. Mean analysis and standard deviation, chi-square analysis, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were incorporated into the statistical analyses. Based on the results of these statistical analyses, both hypothesis were rejected.

Vouette, Isabelle. "Millet, panis, sarrasin, maïs et sorgho : les menus grains dans les systèmes agricoles anciens (France, milieu du XVIe siècle - milieu du XIXe siècle)." Paris 7, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA070055.

Full text
Abstract:
Until the XIX th century. The economical, alimentary and symbolic interests of small grains set them apart the mass of the winter com. However the economic, demographic, geographic and social standing of so many different plants like birdseed, buckwheat, maize or sorghum is shown by the study of various sources materials, such as botany's treaties, manuals of agriculture. Napoleonic's statistics. And mails between administrators of provinces, farming handbook, market prices lists or legal publications. All of these plants are first difficult to identify in the XVf1 century, but their designations become clearer with the Linnean System. They all belong to a coherent rural System. These spring grains are part taking to the rotations of crops. So they can replace the winter com (wheat, rye). They are not suitable for making bread, but making gruel. This fonction is however unusual. First they feed cattle and smaller livestock, including, pigs and poultry. Next they are used to make some local handcrafts (long-handled brush with sorghum or mattress with maize's leaves). The urban demand in foie gras, capon and smoked ham justify keeping these culture, which are supposed to have all qualities to fatten smaller livestock. At last, when whe analyse all the documents for three centuries, culture and valorisation of minor grains are a perfect example of the strict separation of the tasks between men and women. Seeding, weeding fields, keeping poultry, selling in the market are female activities. Even though the erudite world (agronomists, botanists, medical doctors) find fault with all the minor grains, they resist and survive through the regional cooking (gaudes in Bresse, milias in Languedoc or pancakes in Britain)

Zhao, Shengdong. "earPod: Efficient Hierarchical Eyes-free Menu Selection." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/17488.

Full text
Abstract:
The research in this dissertation developed and evaluated a new method for menuing interaction that is intended to be better suited than current methods with respect to mobile eyes-free scenarios. The earPod prototype was developed and then evaluated in a series of four experiments. In the first two experiments, earPod was first compared against an iPod-like (visual) interface and then against a fuller set of competitive techniques that included dual vs. single modality presentations, audio vs. visual modalities, and radial vs. linear mappings. The third experiment consisted of a longitudinal study designed to understand the learning patterns that occurred with these techniques. The fourth experiment examined performance in a conventional (single task) desktop setting and in a driving simulator (i.e., a dual task situation where participants carried out the driving task while interacting with the mobile device). The results of these experiments, comparing earPod with an iPod-like visual linear menu technique on fixed-sized static menus, indicated that earPod is comparable both in terms of speed and accuracy. Thus it seems likely that earPod should be an effective and efficient eyes-free menu selection technique. The comprehensive 3x2 study implemented in Experiment 2 showed that the benefit of earPod was largely due to the radial menu style design. While performance using it was comparable in both speed and accuracy with the visual linear menus, its performance was slower than for a visual radial style menu. In the multi-task simulated driving condition in Experiment 4, where concurrent tasks competed for visual attention, the eyes-free earPod interface was found to be beneficial in improving performance with respect to the safety related driving parameters of following distance and lateral movement in the lane. Thus auditory feedback appears to mitigate some of the risk associated with menu selection while driving. Overall, the results indicated that not only should earPod menuing be able to provide safer interaction in dual task settings, but also that, with sufficient training, audio only menu selection using innovative techniques such as those employed by earPod can be competitive with visual menuing systems even in desktop settings.

Abstract:
M.Ing.
This dissertation proposes a marker-free visual based interface device to be used with menu driven systems. This system, called HandsFree, uses the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) together with Shader technology to perform the image processing. HandsFree makes use of a web camera to gain user input without requiring elementary computer skills. Background subtraction was used to extract user input from the images. The problems usually obtained with background subtraction were overcome by using an averaging technique. Test results proved HandsFree to be robust against different coloured backgrounds and skin tones, different lighting intensity and sudden change in lighting intensity.

Abstract:
碩士
世新大學
傳播管理學研究所(含碩專班)
94
The magazine ecology in Taiwan has been through a great change in recent decade. It has turned from being issued in mass quantity into segmentation, which offers more choices for our readers. In various kinds of magazines, due to our higher living standard and increasing favor of fashionable fine work, our consumers have greater demand in fashion information; therefore, those magazines that focus on fashion and trend information develop prosperously. According to the King Stone Bookstore’s survey on magazines of 7 categories in 2004, most magazines sales grows negatively except “fashion and trend” magazine had grown positively from 2002 to 2004. In addition, fashion magazines used to target on female as their major consumers. However, in recent years, because our society has turned mature in brand and logo concept and male consumer’s market has a significantly boost, male readers’ demand for fashion information increases considerably. Therefore, both the publication and reader group of” men’s fashion magazine” grows obviously. However, compared to woman’s fashion magazines with well-defined targets and verities, the market of man’s fashion magazine is still vague. Besides, there are not many positioning differences in all man’s magazines. The readers often complain about the similar and dull contents in these man’s magazines that have little understanding about consumer’s needs and is lack of interactivity. Thus, this study will focus on the issue of “the man’s fashion magazine” that is seldom studied. For making more attractive content in “men’s fashion magazine”, this study uses the method of “Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique “which has been used overseas for years. Zaltman pointed out that 95% of human being’s decision, behavior recognition and thought happened unconsciously. Only 5% is shown consciously. Because the traditional survey on magazine’s topic study has difficulty in getting the information of reader’s hidden faith and values, this study uses ZMET to understand the male reader’s thought and feelings about “men’s fashion magazine”. Further, a designated topic that meets male reader’s need will be produced. This study applied ZMET to discover 12 interview’s consensus constructs in total of 42. Thus, after we studied , analyzed, concluded and arranged the results of it, we received our interview’s thought about “men’s fashion magazine in 7aspects: “pursuing for success”, “physical demand”, “widen view”, ”fulfill heart”, “ individual style”,” enjoy life”, “upgrade level” . These aspects can provide as references for the enterprises who want to design the topic study. By building up a rich database, we expect the magazine enterprises can invent some fine contents that match our reader’s need.

Abstract:
Ralph Vaughan Williams was a strong advocate for adapting his compositions to suit the needs of various ensembles. He often arranged his choral compositions for several different voicings, allowing them to be performed by mixed, men’s, and women’s choruses. He also frequently offered reduced instrumentation accompaniment options to fit the personnel and budget restraints of these choirs. The purpose of this study is to analyze the male chorus transcription techniques used by Ralph Vaughan Williams in transcribing his composition for chorus and orchestra, Five Mystical Songs, from SATB to TTBB voicing. The culmination of this research is a modern day transcription of Vaughan Williams’s Dona Nobis Pacem for men’s chorus, brass septet, organ and percussion. This transcription adds to the men’s choral repertoire and increases the work’s accessibility for school and community choruses by creating a reduced accompaniment that maintains the flavor of the original orchestral instrumentation.
School of Music

Through the study, Chinese Taipei could know the sports capabilities of the outstanding athletes in East Asian in advance. Besides, this study could be reference material for the team which trains the contestants of the 16th Asian Games. Here come the conclusions: A. The athletes who won the gold medals of different categories used the active attacks more than passive ones except for the fin and bantam. In the attack patterns, the percentage of getting points was equal.(compare active attacks and passive attacks) More athletes used the standing posture of left-foot forward and right-foot backward. Active right-foot backward was the main attack pattern for getting points. B. As for the techniques of the athletes, their main movement was spin-kick, which was the movement of the highest percentage for getting points, except for the athletes of Welter, who used the movement of backward-kick more often. C. The most percentage of habitual foot for the athletes was passive right-foot backward and then the active right-foot backward and the passive left-foot backward. The highest percentage for getting points was the active right-foot backward and then the passive right-foot backward and the passive left-foot backward. D. As for the integrated techniques patterns, the passive left-foot backward spin-kick was mostly often used by the athletes of the Fin and could get the points most easily. The active right-foot backward spin-kick was mostly used by the Feather, Light, Welter and Middle. The athletes of the Fly, Bantam, Middle and Heavy use the passive right-foot backward spin-kick could most easily attack the opponents and get the points.

The subjects were the men''s handball team, track and field team, and judo team from a certain junior high school in Kaohsiung City. A total of 19 male students participated in the study. Each of them was in a healthy and normal condition. In this study, the subjects were tested for their physical fitness and throwing techniques. The test items included a sitting posture forward bend, a handball throwing, a one-minute sit-ups, a vertical jump, a medicine ball throwing, a 15- meter sprint, a 7-meter standing shot throwing , and a 9-meter stepped shot throwing. The differences among three groups were determined by the one-sample test for variance. Pearson product-moment correlation test examined the correlation between physical fitness and throwing techniques. The results of the study showed that the track and field team was the best in the physical fitness program, while the handball team was the best in the throwing techniques. In the medicine ball throwing, the track and field team was significantly better than the handball team and the judo team. There was no significant difference among the three groups on physical fitness and throwing techniques. The handball team had a positive correlation with the 9-meter stepped shot throwing and the medicine ball throwing; the track and field team had a positive correlation with the handball throwing and the 15- meter sprint ; there was no significant relation between the physical fitness and throwing technology projects on Judo team. The conclusion of this study is that the muscle strength and explosive force of the upper extremities are very important for the throwing actions. Attention must be paid to the overall training of the whole body and avoid the training only for a single limb.
