Abstract:
In the paper the issues of work satisfaction as a part of life satisfaction were discussed. Research problem included link between terminal values, instrumental values or values connected with scientific fulfill and work satisfaction of university workers. Results of the conducted research showed, that work satisfaction is dependent from realizing terminal values in work. The more values person feels to realize, the more satisfied with the work he or she was and vice versa. Terminal values had more influence on work satisfaction than instrumental values or values connected with scientific fulfill. Analyzing the results helped to define plans of future research, showing the need to get to know causes of work satisfaction, including specific conditions of the examined profession.

Abstract:
Values affect humans’ perception of situations and problems and guide our actions. The objective of this study was to explore the values of dairy farmers, and whether their values influenced their decisions to maintain dairy farming or to buy consultancy services. During late fall 2007 we visited and interviewed 90 farmers. First we did a qualitative analysis of the data and then we merged the interview data with the existing database of financial data from the year 2007 to do statistical analyses. We also checked whether the farmers still produced milk in 2013, six years after the interviews. Most farmers had terminal values like keeping up the tradition and to have an interesting work. Value combinations with instrumental values such as to earn money and to produce milk were common. Realizing that many farmers prioritize terminal values over instrumental values has important consequences for dairy companies, dairy consultants and politicians.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to understand the values around which stakeholders of a place brand within a community can align. Design/methodology/approach A content analysis of websites provided a description of region brands. In-depth interview data from representatives of two communal region brands provide a foundation for investigating the attitudes and behaviors of 20 place brand managers depending on their value orientation. Findings Two categories of communal region brands are found, of which one reflects terminal values whereas the other is based on instrumental values. Instrumental values appear more efficient for promoting the place through stakeholders than terminal values. Research limitations/implications This exploratory research highlights some particularities of place brand communities and adds instrumental value to the classic terminal value identified within commercial brand communities. Practical implications Place brand managers gain insights into the values around which they can align stakeholders of their brand. Originality/value Brand community literature focuses mostly on specialty or convenience product-oriented communities. By investigating a place as a different type of “product”, this study demonstrates that place brands draw on communal arguments to function like master brands. Furthermore, terminal values can be replaced by more instrumental values in the context of place branding, because agreement on broad terminal values by individual members of the community is unlikely to be achieved whereas specific instrumental values can serve their individual interests.

Abstract:
AbstractRecent studies have acknowledged the many benefits of including fossils in phylogenetic inference (e.g., reducing long-branch attraction). However, unstable taxa are known to be problematic, as they can reduce either the resolution of the strict consensus or branch support. In this study, we evaluate whether unstable taxa that reduce consensus resolution affect support values, and the extent of such impact, under equal and extended implied weighting. Two sets of analyses were conducted across 30 morphological datasets to evaluate complementary aspects. The first focused on the analytical conditions incrementing the terminal instability, while the second assessed whether pruning wildcards improves support. Changes in support were compared with the “number of nodes collapsed by unstable terminals,” their “distance to the root,” the “proportion of missing data in a dataset,” and the “proportion of sampled characters.” Our results indicate that the proportion of missing entries distributed among closely related taxa (for a given character) might be as detrimental for stability as those distributed among characters (for a given terminal). Unstable terminals that (1) collapse few nodes or (2) are closely located to the root node have more influence on the estimated support values. Weighting characters according to their extra steps while assuming that missing entries contribute to their homoplasy reduced the instability of wildcards. Our results suggest that increasing character sampling and using extended implied weighting decreases the impact of wildcard terminals. This study provides insights for designing future research dealing with unstable terminals, a typical problem of paleontological data.

Abstract:
The research included a suitable sample of students at the Department of Social Pedagogy in Zenica (N= 81), who completed a short socio-demographic survey and a Rokeach's Terminal Values Survey. Terminal values represent the goals of human existence, among which the following values might be distinguished: individual, collective, humane, and altruistic. Bearing in mind practical implications of knowing the values as such, the values which represent sources and guides for attitudes and behavior, and which have been shown to correlate significantly with numerous variables (cognitive functioning, free time, risk behavior, addiction), we considered it important to examine the most prominent terminal values among our students, and compare the results to the results of the available studies involving comparable groups of participants. Based on the findings, we derived six subscales of grouped terminal values: social harmony, self-actualization, personal gratification, security, love and affection, and personal satisfaction. Only the personal gratification variable showed normal distribution, while all other were negatively asymmetric, indicating, thus, an insufficient discrimination of Rokeach’s Terminal Values Scale. Generally, the participants deemed all terminal values significant. In the overall sample, the lowest ranked individual terminal values were exciting life, the world of beauty and money, while the highest ranked were family security, self-esteem, and personal happiness. The gender variable was statistically significantly correlated with the subscale of personal gratification. A Mann-Whitney’s test showed that personal gratification, measured by the items of comfortable life, exciting life, satisfaction and social recognition, statistically significantly correlated with the gender variable (U=237, p<0.01), so that the female participants considered these items more important (median 4.2) than the male participants (3.8). The birthplace was significantly positively correlated with wisdom evaluation (U=556; p<0.05), as well as the evaluation of freedom in non-cigarette consumers compared to their colleagues who consumed them regularly or occasionally (χ2=8.77, p=0.012).

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the underlying relationships among two distinct forms of consumer values, namely, instrumental and terminal values, fashion consciousness and behavioural intentions in the context of online fashion apparel retail sector.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual model and subsequent measurement scale were developed, grounded on in-depth review of the extensive literature and validated with customers engaged in online shopping of fashion apparels. The model was empirically examined, and a total of 395 responses were gathered from an online survey administered at a northeastern university in India. The model was validated using structural equation modelling, and a two-step approach suggested by Anderson and Gerbing (1988) was used to evaluate the measurement and structural models for the research.FindingsThe results of the study indicate that instrumental and terminal values significantly affect fashion consciousness, and fashion consciousness has a significant impact on behavioural intentions as well. The research brings out that fashion consciousness acts as a partial mediator between instrumental/terminal values and behavioural intentions. It is noteworthy that compared to terminal values instrumental values display a greater influence on both the variables fashion consciousness and behavioural intentions.Research limitations/implicationsThe conclusion of present research will notably assist the fashion retailers, online marketing researchers and experts understand the importance of terminal and instrumental values in increasing fashion consciousness, leading to strategically design campaigns for promoting and instigate consumers’ positive behavioural intentions in the best interest of the online fashion retail sector.Practical implicationsThe study results provide suggestions for competitive marketing strategies for online fashion companies operating in the emerging markets like India.Originality/valueThe present study is first of its kind attempt to use Rokeach’s (1973) two-dimensional measure of human values, in order to discover the terminal and instrumental values relationship and their influence on fashion consciousness and behavioural intentions in the online fashion retail industry.

Abstract:
More effective tobacco control requires new data on factors that are not explicitly related to smoking but are influential, such as “Terminal Values” regarding desirable end-states of existence and “Instrumental Values” regarding desirable modes of conduct. Association analysis was conducted among 36 Core Values (18 Terminal and 18 Instrumental) derived from Rokeach’s Value Survey, three risk factors (protobacco media, smoking peers and sensation-seeking), and cigarette smoking using data collected from a sample of 334 medical students in China. The participants were 18 to 24 years old (47% female) and 18.4% of them smoked in the past 30 days. Multivariate analysis indicated that cigarette smoking was negatively associated with nine Terminal Values (e.g., a Sense of Accomplishment and Self-Respect) and ten Instrumental Values (e.g., Clean and Self-Controlled). As expected, when the endorsed number of values/total value scores increased from low to high, the 30-day smoking rate declined from 32.6% - 75.0% to 13.5% - 15.9% (p < .01). The odds ratios (OR) for the endorsed Terminal Values and the total value scores were 0.50 (p < .01) and 0.64 (p < .01) respectively, and the ORs for the endorsed Instrumental Values and the total value scores were 0.42 (p < .01) and 0.44 (p

Abstract:
Radiant terminals have been widely applied in heating and cooling systems. However, few existing thermal performance evaluation indices can reflect the influence of structural forms on heat transfer performance. This study introduces the structural thermal resistance (Rs) to rapidly evaluate the structure form’s effects. First, theoretical analysis and experimental tests were introduced. Three types of terminals, including the copper conduit graphite plate (CCGP), plastic tube-embedded metal plate (PTMP), and capillary network-embedded structural plate (CNSP) were tested in the laboratory. Then, the CNSP terminals were taken as validation examples. The results show that the Rs values of the same type of radiant terminal tend to be stable and constant. The variations in Rs within the same type of radiant terminals were small both under cooling and heating conditions. Only when the terminal structure changed, the Rs would change. This suggests that the Rs can reflect the complex heat transfer processes inside the radiant terminals while distinguishing different terminal types. The validation analysis showed an average relative error of 3.4% and 2.9% for cooling and heating, respectively. Lastly, the potential application of Rs in practical applications was discussed, and a Python-based online tool was developed to help design, operate, and evaluate radiant terminals.

Abstract:
Fault at transmission line system may lead to major impacts such as power quality problems and cascading failure in the grid system. Thus, it is very important to locate it fast so that suitable solution can be taken to ensure power system stability can be retained. The complexity of the transmission line however makes the fault point identification a challenging task. This paper proposes an enhanced fault detection and location method using positive and negative-sequence values of current and voltage, taken at both local and remote terminals. The fault detection is based on comparison between the total fault current with currents combination during the pre-fault time. While the fault location algorithm was developed using an impedancebased method and the estimated fault location was taken at two cycles after fault detection. Various fault types, fault resistances and fault locations have been tested in order to verify the performance of the proposed method. The developed algorithms have successfully detected all faults within high accuracy. Based on the obtained results, the estimated fault locations are not affected by fault resistance and line charging current. Furthermore, the proposed method able to detect fault location without the needs to know the fault type.

<span lang="EN-US">Fault at transmission line system may lead to major impacts such as power quality problems and cascading failure in the grid system. While the fault location algorithm was developed using an impedance-based method and the estimated fault location was taken at two cycles after fault detection. Various fault types, fault resistances and fault locations have been tested in order to verify the performance of the proposed method. The developed algorithms have successfully detected all faults within high accuracy. Based on the obtained results, the estimated fault locations are not affected by fault resistance and line charging current. Furthermore, the proposed method able to detect fault location without the needs to know the fault type.</span>

Abstract:
Attitude towards derivable knowledge as a process of satisfaction of cognition needs and also as opportunity for developing flairs and making self-improvement can be called terminal. At the same time, the increase of pragmatism in society and in demands of employers for graduates doesn't stimulate students' interest in terminal values of education. Nowadays students become much more interested in receiving good marks and good exam results than in the matter of subject that they study; they become more attracted by an opportunity of having a good time in university and making helpful acquaintances than by a chance of making a professional self-determination. How spread is the instrumental students' attitude towards studying at the university? Is it possible that under the influence of this phenomenon the terminal values of education may be extruded? These and other questions are being examined on the base of materials of four recurrent sociological researches carried out among MGIMO students in 2001-2013. The main objects of analysis are the values of educational process, relations with fellow-students, essential qualities of lecturer's personality, ways of spending free time. It was found out that the terminal educational values predominate among MGIMO students. They study a lot, tensely and with enthusiasm, spending the modal part of time doing their homework, actively working on their self-improvement. It is revealed that intimate knowledge and self-improvement as 2 main terminal values in education assign multidirectional vectors towards different aspects of educational process.

Aɖe and la have multiple functions which are often realized by the position they occupy in various syntactic environments in Ewe, a Kwa language. Aɖe can function as an indefinite marker, a partitive marker or an indefinite pronoun. La can function as a definite marker, an agentive suffix, or a terminal particle. As a terminal particle, la occurs at the end of preposed adverbial phrases and nominal phrases, embedded relative clauses which are postposed to the nominal heads, and other dependent clauses in Ewe constructions. Using the Givenness Hierarchy, this study argues that regardless of the different syntactic environments in which these particles occur, each of them has a univocal value semantically: the use of aɖe and la encode the cognitive statuses ‘referential’ and ‘uniquely identifiable’ respectively in Ewe.Keywords: Particles, Indefiniteness, Definiteness, Referential, Uniquely Identifiable

Abstract:
This paper considers using Monte-Carlo analysis method for evaluation some of the parameters of a container terminal. A high amount of scientific work on this topic is noted in domestic literature. International scientific literature concerning usage of Monte-Carlo method for simulating different parameters of container terminals is also analyzed. We note that foreign authors often use Monte-Carlo analysis as an auxiliary method, for example, for checking results of discrete-event simulation model of a complicated logistical system for adequacy, whereas domestic authors often use Monte-Carlo analysis as a method for direct evaluation of container or other cargo terminals parameters. This study proposes a variant of a model for evaluating the necessary container yard capacity, its area and berth utilization of a container terminal, using Monte-Carlo analysis method. We develop a model based on analytical formulas, where some initial parameters take form of probabilistic distributions, rather than determined values. Such parameters are expected cargo turnover, vessel handling equipment productivity and container dwell times. It should be noted that all these parameters can be preliminarily evaluated by port designers, investors or cargo terminal operators. We show an example of model calculations using Monte-Carlo analysis method and some values of initial parameters. Observed results are adequate for a model of such scope as it shows, for example, that most expected value of berth utilization becomes lower as the number of berths becomes larger.

Abstract:
The pharmacokinetics of clozapine is a subject of intensive research because of its narrow therapeutic window and susceptibility to drug-drug interactions. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar for half-life values of clozapine in humans. Twenty-one publications were found to contain terminal half-life information of clozapine in humans along with the time of the last plasma sample. Average values of the terminal half-lives of clozapine were calculated to be 10.2, 13.2, 14.2, 18.3 and 29.2 hours with a last data point at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 120 hours, respectively. This confirms the notion that one would arrive at longer terminal half-lives when longer blood sampling times are used in pharmacokinetic studies on clozapine. “Terminal half-lives” of therapeutic agent are routinely computed and reported in literature. For drugs with a third deep compartment such as clozapine, one should remember to consider the time of the last data point when comparing the “terminal” half-life.

Abstract:
The idea of the study is that the value potential of the subject is a fundamental element of the knowledge system as part of the realization of the idea of sustainable development in education. The basis of the study used the classification of value categories proposed by Milton Rokeach in 1979. We found that in the main school, the content of the subject “Biology” is primarily aimed at forming ideas about terminal values – “life”, “health”, “nature”; in high school – about terminal values “life”, “health”, as well as instrumental values – “perseverance”. The value ideas of a biology teacher are one of the key factors in the formation of students’ value ideas. In the structure of value representations of biology teachers, the three leaders are orientations towards terminal values. We have put forward the assumption that there is a dissonance between the value ideas of respondents and the values that the school biology course is aimed at forming an idea about.

Abstract:
Problem Statement (Relevance): This paper describes one of the possible variants of the quantitative relationship between the coefficients of the B-form equations and the equations of other forms that evaluate the state of a passive six-terminal network with two input and four output terminals. Such six-terminal network can replace devices, elements or parts of electrical circuits or electric power systems. The coefficients of the B-form equations, as well as the coefficients of the A-form equations, can be determined experimentally. In principle, the coefficients of equations of other forms can also be determined experimentally. However, such experiments are usually difficult to set up and conduct. Thus, it seems to be more reasonable to determine these coefficients from the established quantitative relationship with the previously determined coefficients of the B-form. Objectives: To establish a quantitative relationship between the coefficients of the B-form equations describing the state of the six-terminal network with two input and four output terminals and the coefficients of the G-, H-, Y- and Z-form equations describing the state of the same six-terminal network. Methods Applied: Mathematical modelling and some elements of the theory of multi-terminal networks. Originality: The originality of this research lies in the proposed method of establishing a quantitative relationship between the coefficients of the A-form equations and the equations of other forms describing the state of the passive six-terminal network with two input and four output terminals. Findings: This paper examines one of the possible variants of the quantitative relationship between the coefficients of the B-form equations and the coefficients of the G-, H-, Y- and Z-form equations describing the state of the passive six-terminal network with two input and four output terminals. Some mathematical statements are presented which can help establish such relationship. Practical Relevance: If one knows the values of the B-form equation coefficients, the proposed quantitative relationship between the coefficients of various forms of equations will help build equations of other forms and establish various types of dependencies between the input and output characteristics of an electric power unit, which can be replaced with a six-terminal network with two input and four output terminals. This technique can be used to establish a quantitative relationship between the coefficients of the G-, H-, Y- or Z-form equations and the coefficients of equations of other forms describing the state of different modifications of passive six-terminal networks.

Abstract:
This exploratory study examined the personal values (using the Rokeach values survey) and moral reasoning (according to the DIT-2 P-scores) of a sample of 51 students taking business courses at a Canadian University in Winter 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 epidemic. The mean P-Score of the sample was 32.16 with females having a mean P-score (37.4) significantly higher (at 5% level) than the males (mean of 28.62). Health was ranked as the most important terminal value, followed by Family Security and Self-Respect while Honest was considered as the highest-ranking instrumental value, followed by Responsible and Ambitious. Female respondents considered the value of Self-Respect to be of more priority than the male respondents. The results suggest that most of the respondents (66%) according to the Musser-Orke classification, place emphasis on social than on personal goals and thus on serving others rather than themselves. No significant correlation was, however, detected between the respondents’ P-Scores and either their social terminal or moral instrumental value scores.

Individual and professional values of nurses enhance the psychological wellbeing of healthcare professionals, enabling them to do professional and proficient work and also reducing the risk of burnout. The aim of the study was to investigate individual and professional values of nurse practitioners and the relationship of these values to socio-demographic data. The study involved 163 nurses aged 22–70 years (41.6 + 12.64) with 99.8% women. Respondents were interviewed in two hospitals in Riga in 2019. Permission from Rīga Stradiņš University Ethics Committee was obtained to do the study. Two surveys were used in the research: (1) Rokeach Value Survey and (2) Nurses Professional Values Scale–Three (NPVS–3). There was no statistically significant correlation between socio-demographic data of nurses and their professional values. The most evident professional value group for nurses was care. The Rokeach scale listed physical and mental health as a priority of all terminal values with an average rate 3.8. On the other hand, happiness of others ranks as the last priority in the list of terminal values with an average rating of 14.5. At the top of the instrumental values was honesty with an average rating of 6.3. Intolerance toward the drawbacks of oneself and other people concludes the list with an average rating of 15.0.

Abstract:
Analysis of multiquantal transmitter release from single cultured cortical neuron terminals. Application of single synapse recording methods indicates that the amplitude of postsynaptic responses of single CNS synapses can vary greatly among repeated stimuli. To determine whether this observation could be attributed to synapses releasing a variable number of transmitter quanta, we assessed the prevalence of multiquantal transmitter release in primary cultures of cortical neurons with the action potential (AP)-dependent presynaptic turnover of the styryl dye FM1–43 ( Betz and Bewick 1992 , 1993 ; Betz et al. 1996 ). It was assumed that if a high proportion of vesicles within a terminal were loaded with FM1–43 the amount of dye released per stimulus would be proportional to the number of quanta released and/or the probability of release at a terminal. To rule out differences in the amount of release (between terminals) caused by release probability or incomplete loading of terminals, conditions were chosen to maximize both release probability and terminal loading. Three-dimensional reconstruction of terminals was employed to ensure that bouton fluorescence was accurately measured. Analysis of the relationship between the loading of terminals and release indicated that presumed larger terminals (>FM1–43 uptake) release a greater amount of dye per stimulus than smaller terminals, suggesting multiquantal release. The distribution of release amounts across terminals was significantly skewed toward higher values, with 13–17% of synaptic terminals apparently releasing multiple quanta per AP. In conclusion, our data suggest that most synaptic terminals release a relatively constant amount of transmitter per stimulus; however, a subset of terminals releases amounts of FM1–43 that are greater than that expected from a unimodal release process.

For some firms with large nonliquid assets, preferred shareholders can still get back a little bit of money when the firms finish disbursement of loans at the status of bankruptcy. For such a situation, to investigate the optimal dividend policy, a stochastic dynamic dividend model with nonzero terminal bankruptcy values is put forward in this paper. Moreover, an analytic solution for the optimal objective function of the discounted dividends is provided and verified. An important application of this result is that it can be employed to construct the solution for the optimal value function on the dividend problem with bailouts at bankruptcy. Further, the relationship for the solutions of these two different problems is demonstrated. In the end, some numerical examples are provided to support our theoretical results and the corresponding economic interpretations are illustrated.

A proactive search time adjustment model based on the optimally weighted LightGBM algorithm was studied in this paper for the problem of large delay fluctuations in 5G distribution terminals leading to protection blocking. The model used historical data on delay fluctuations of wireless communication terminals and feature variables such as temperature and date and time as inputs to predict delays and dynamically adjust equipment parameters. First, the original feature variables were pre-processed via feature engineering, then the data were fitted together with the historical delay data by the LightGBM algorithm. And the final weighted combination was used to adjust the predicted values in combination with the real-time monitoring delay of the terminal, finally realizing the high-precision prediction of 5G terminal delay. The results show that the proposed method can effectively achieve delay prediction and has higher prediction accuracy than random forest regression and XGBoost algorithms.

Abstract:
The paper highlights the operation processes at the terminals of the transport node, which, to a considerable extent, are defined by arrival different types of cargo. The cargo is usually delivered from the suppliers’ enterprises with the help of transport facilities (by train/motor transport). To plan the efficient functioning of the sea terminal there should be used the methods of forecasting input cargo flows. It has been stated that most works devoted to forecasting traffic flows on cargo terminals are recommended to use information from the history (for which it is nec-essary to draw the arrays of well-known results of forecasting in different situation) based on the long-term analysis of the terminal operation. The above method of forecasting is of little use, when the supplier network and destinations of the cargo change frequently. A certain difficulty can pre-sent the choice of factors that define the situation at the sea terminal and the size of forecasted parameters of the cargo flow. There has been given an example of the practical forecasting of cargo arrival for handling at the sea terminal. The practical implementation of the formal dependence of forecasting the cargo arrival for processing in the direction “coast-sea” at the marine terminal is presented in the sequence of four blocks: 1) the necessary values are calculated; 2) the arrived consignments are selected that have been sent on the same day and satisfy the columns of the matrix; 3) posterior probabilities for the columns of the matrix are calculated; 4) forecasting of consignments arrival is calculated. In the proposed universal method of forecasting the arrival of goods to the marine terminal in the transport hub in the coast-sea processing directions there is used not only statistic data on the duration of cargo transportation to the marine terminal, but also operational information on the arrival of individual consignments

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to confirm whether gender, age, residence in rural or urban areas and work experience influence the peculiarities of hierarchy of leaders’ personal values, and also to investigate the differences in the hierarchy of leaders’ personal values and that of their subordinates. The significant changes in the social value system create for the majority of people the urgent need to adopt new benchmarks and rebuild their personal values system. This also applies directly to the modern leader who is trying to reach a mutual understanding in the relationship. The goal of our research is to study the peculiarities of the hierarchy of leaders’ personal values. These were the hypotheses of the study: 1) the specific and individual-oriented values prevail in leaders as well as values of “business” and “self-affirmation”; 2) the hierarchy of value self-determination of modern leaders in education is influenced by their work experience, residence in rural or urban areas, age and gender. To solve the empirical problems of our research and to confirm or refute the hypotheses, we used the method of studying the value orientations, developed by the American researcher Milton Rokeach. According to the results of the research, the most important leaders’ terminal values have been the specific and individually oriented values, and the most important leaders’ instrumental values have been mainly the values of «business» and «self-affirmation», while gender affects the terminal and instrumental values, and the age impacts mainly instrumental values.

Abstract:
1. Mechanical dissociation of the enzyme-treated goldfish retina yielded somata and axon terminals of horizontal cells. The membrane properties of these solitary axon terminals were investigated using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. 2. Axon terminals had a large input resistance, comparable to the seal resistance (approximately 30 G omega). Most axon terminals (greater than 80%) showed a nearly linear current-voltage relation between -60 and +10 mV, where the slope conductance was as small as 5 muS/cm2. Some axon terminals showed a shallow negative slope conductance in the same potential range. 3. The membrane current consisted of two components: transient and sustained. The transient component was carried by sodium ions, and the sustained component was a mixture of calcium and potassium currents. The sodium current (INa) was activated by depolarization of beyond -45 mV and was maximal (approximately 60 pA) at -10 mV. It was blocked by 5 microM tetrodotoxin and disappeared in Na+-free medium. The maximum amplitude of INa was less than 10% of INa of the soma. 4. A small calcium current (less than 6 pA) was isolated in a small proportion of cells, with an amplitude approximately 5% of the calcium current evoked in the soma under the identical recording conditions. 5. A small amount of potassium current through the anomalous rectifier was induced in the axon terminal when the membrane potential was below -60 mV. Its conductance was 15-20 muS/cm2, only 1/20 of the estimate in the soma. Other types of potassium currents were not detected. 6. It is concluded that the soma and the axon terminal have a similar set of membrane currents, but the specific membrane conductance of the axon terminal is extremely low. The signal conductivity from soma to axon terminal was assessed using a passive cable model together with numerical values obtained from the present experiments. Although the membrane conductance of the connecting axon was not measurable directly, the calculation strongly suggests that low conductance of the axon terminal membrane minimizes the leakage of signals arriving electrotonically through the thin connecting axon, even if the membrane conductance of the axon was overestimated as being identical to the soma membrane. 7. These results can explain why light-evoked responses recorded from the axon terminal are similar in amplitude as well as in waveform to those recorded from the soma, despite the lack of direct inputs from photoreceptors.

Calves generated by multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) are weaned from their recipient dams at 10 weeks old and placed in performance test from 5 to 11 months of age. At the end of the performance test, saleable meat yield is estimated from liveweight at end of test, ultrasonic fat depth measurements and muscling score. Calving difficulty is predicted from the birthweight and gestation length of the animal on test whilst feed intake is measured directly by recording individual food intakes during performance testing. The estimated breeding value for the selection index of an animal is expressed in £'s (pounds sterling) as deviations from a mean of zero for the SAC population of Simmentals. It is calculated using the information for each animal plus that of all its relatives in its own and other performance tests by means of BLUP procedures. The objective of the work described here was to evaluate the effectiveness of the selection index in identifying sires of superior genetic merit for use in crossbred beef production systems.
