Abstract:
This article deals with 21st-century American perceptions of the multicultural history of Galicia, especially during the interwar period, World War II and the Holocaust. The author primarily examines select books, articles and films that target a broad American audience. In particular, the film Three Stories of Galicia (2010) is analyzed, with a focus on the ways in which American audiences helped shape the directors’ creative process. The Galician stories in the film thus became “Americanized” and “universalized” models for efforts at reconciliation in other troubled multicultural societies.

Abstract:
Since the cultural “rediscovery” of the former eastern outskirts of the Habsburg Monarchy, Galicia has not left being literary fashion. Writers try to explore this significant place of memory (Erinnerungsort) of European cultural history, tending to arrange the literary myth of Galicia as an overarching narrative, in which the force fields of European history are merging. A striking example of such kind of literature is Jenny Erpenbeck’s novel Aller Tage Abend (2012). Praised by the critics, the text tells at the same time an autobiographical and fictional family history during the 20th centur

The article analyses the model of the cultural space underlying the image of Galicia in the novel The End of Days by Jenny Erpenbeck. The research is focused on the intertextual elements used to create this image, their functions and the range of their interactions with the concept of the frontier. The myth of Galicia, the works of Karl Emil Franzos, Joseph Roth, Johann Wolfgang Goethe as well as Old Testament stories and psalms are considered as the main sources of intertextuality. The theme of emigration is present in the work of two of the most prominent nineteenth-century Galician authors, Emilia Pardo Bazán and Rosalía de Castro. They had very different approaches: the topic of displacement in several naturalist stories by Pardo Bazán is far removed from the discourse of affect that characterizes de Castro’s work. But in the novel Morriña [‘Homesickness’] (1889), Pardo Bazán displays an uneasy mixture of both discourses (sentimentalism and naturalist determinism) which is, I will argue, a result of the unresolved tension between her Spanish nationalism and her femini

Adscritos abertamente nunha tradición celta e atlántica, os textos ferrinianos admiten e revelan influencias diversas. The Galicia margin has been at the forefront the development and testing of models on the break-up of magma-poor passive margins. However the current paradigm of continental break-up is still largely based on two dimensional observations. The data presented here from a high resolution 3D seismic reflection data reveal in unprecedented detail the complexity of continental break-up. Using the 3D geometry of the faults, analysing fault displacement at a number of different levels, and mapping syn-rift sediments it has been possible to offer a new model of break-up.
