The collision-induced dissociation (CID) of transition metal carbonyl clusters have been recorded and presented using the recently developed technique of energy-dependent electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (EDESI). EDESI has been improved to incorporate breakdown graphs, allowing complete fragmentation data to be presented. In this thesis, graphene (i.e. monolayer carbon film) and carbon clusters supported on a transition metal surface are systematically studied by local probe techniques, with respect to their structures, electronic properties and formation mechanisms. The properties of transition metal clusters differ from those of both atomic and bulk size regimes. Such clusters are incompletely understood and potentially useful, making them attractive targets for further study. A range of computational and experimental techniques have been applied to the study of four metal cluster systems. Decorated rhodium clusters Rh n O m (N 2 O) + ( n = 4 − 8, m = 0 − 2) have been investigated both experimentally by IR-MPD and computationally using DFT. The effect of cluster size as well as oxygen coverage on the spectroscopy of the N 2 O bend are analyzed.
