Full textWork psychology considers the learning phenomena experienced by operators confronted with a transfer of technology which may or may not be compatible with their actual working methods. It defines the factors determining the operator's behavioral attitudes to measure the effectiveness of transfers of technology, anticipate problems thus establishing a transition theory-practice. Piaget's and Ochanine's theories of the learning processes and tool usage are employed to understand the initial confusion in using new technology tools the availability of traditional images comparable with the technology tools influences the learning process and several responses develop. From these come the teaching techniques or technology tools modifications

Since the early 2000s, many immigrants have been hired as sylvicultural workers in Québec’s forestry industry. Analyzing interviews conducted with 16 of these workers and 6 of their employers, this thesis presents the different stages of their career path corresponding to their presence in sylviculture: seeking, introducing, occupying and leaving the job. Each of these stages are related with the crucial questions, for immigration matters, of socioprofessional integration, qualification and ethnicity. The analysis shows that sylviculture is considered as a more interesting option than other job opportunities, giving access to higher wages and partially neutralizing the "ethnic penalty". Ethnicity acts as a catalyst in the finding of this job, instead of as a hindrance. Two categories of workers have been identified according to their plans regarding their presence in sylviculture: "long term" versus "transiting" workers. Following these categories, three career path orientation strategies have been observed: for the former – with little education –, a "prolongation" strategy that aims to benefit from the relatively satisfying integration offered by sylviculture, and, for the latter – strongly educated –, two more strategies that rather aim an exit from the sector and the beginning of a "qualification quest" that could allow access to a better job. The "adaptation" strategy is characterized by the abandonment of pre-migratory field of training, whose access is judged too difficult; these workers’ "qualification quest" is strongly oriented by perceived labour market opportunities (work conditions and openings). On the opposite, the "persistence" strategy gives precedence to the match between job and pre-migratory field of training, even if it implies for the workers to go back to school, in order to valorize their training in Québec’s educational system. The analysis identifies typical issues linked to the general question of immigrants’ labour, but also more specific elements particular to Québec’s sylvicultural sector.

Full textSince 1986, regeneration areas clean by motor-manual cleaning operations has increases noticeably. However poor working conditions and a lack of recognition contribute to the problem of labor shortage in this field. Silvicultural contractors have problems attracting and conserving a stable working crew. A research project including time studies, ergonomics and economics analysis was undertaken with the aim of understanding the workload dynamic of brushsaw operators paid on a piece rate system. The worker’s behaviour and productivity in relation to incentives, site and climatic factors was studied. This research involved the participation of forty-eight brushsaw operators. A productivity model was then produced based upon forestry inventory data and time studies’ results. The proportion of the area covered by competitive vegetation (%) and the stand density (stems/hectare) were the two variables with the highest determination coefficient. An improved knowledge of workload dynamic was gained through heart rate measurements. The relationship between site factors and heart rate was evaluated. Those results about productivity and heart rate were used to evaluate workers’ behaviour. This behaviour was compared to those found in the literature. Differences were explained by piece rate incentive at a fixed rate and the worker strategy to reach a weekly income goal. The use of a variable piece-rate to compensate brushsaw operators is recommended. Also a fixed wages is recommended during the learning period to decrease workers’ discouragement.

Full textWhereas most workers became salaried during the 20th century, lumberjacks have stayed on the margins of the wage system: in France, today, a lumberjack is usually a self-employed or piece-worker. The activity of lumberjacks thus highlights a theoretical tension: it is a manual job but it is practiced outside of the wage model. The goal of my thesis is to determine the conditions under which such a self-employed sector of the labor market can offer stability to working-class men in the working world. To this end, I conducted a localized analysis of forms of employment, market mechanisms and class relations from the point of view of both employers and workers. This research is based on quantitative and qualitative analyses of data collected during a six-year long fieldwork in a French rural region. This mixed-method strategy offers an opportunity to reflect on the possibility of the quantitative analysis of ethnographic material. The thesis identifies the various forms of subcontracting and highlights the role of the "capital of autochtony" (capital d'autochtonie) in the segmentation of the labor market: the hardest work is outsourced via the import of (often foreign) workers, allowing some independent lumberjacks to achieve economically stable positions despite the insecurity of their status. This research examines the effects of the distance from the wage system on the social trajectories of working-class men: being a self-employed lumberjack enables them to capitalize on distinctive resources at a time when the local labor market offers little prospect of upward mobility. Thus, I show the interest there is to consider these effects as a result of market mechanisms as well as class relations in a localized social space

Full textLUMBENNG IN THE ALPS DEPENDED VERY EARLY ON FOREIGN WORKERS. INDEED THE FARMERS COULD NOT BE HIRED FOR LONG PERIODS WITHOUT ENDANGERING THEIR OWN FARMING. BESIDES, WOODCUTTING REQUIRES SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES. FIRST FOR FELLING, WICH MEANS CONTROLLING THE FALL OF SUCH A HUGE MASS AS A TREE WITH ITS KINETIC ENERGY. THEN FOR CONVEYING, VHICH IN OUR ALPINE COUNTRIES MEANS ESSENTIALLY SHOOTING LOGS DOWN STEEP SLOPES. THE SKILLS OF WOODCUTTERS FROM SOUTH TYROL -AUSTRIANS THEN BERGAMASQUES- HAVE THEREFORE BEEN CALLLED FOR TO SOLVE THESE DIFFICULTIES : THUS "RISE" IS THE NAME THEY GAVE TO A TOBOGGAN BUILT WITH LOGS, AND THEY INTRODUCED THE FOREST CABLES, ESPECIALLY THE "FOUR WIRES". TO CONCEIVE OF THESE FOREIGN OUTSIDERS, PEOPLE HAVE REUSED THE IMAGE OF THE WILD BEINGS THEY WERE FAMILIAR WITH AND HAVE TRANSFERRED TO WOODCUTTERS THE EVIL-MINDEDNESS ATTRIBUTED TO THOSE WILD PEOPLE. SUCH A FORMAL KINSHIP WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE FACT THAT FAIRIES LIVED IN THE TREES (DRYADS) AND ALSO MONOPOLISED MANY FOREST TECHNIQUES, AS WOODCUTTERS DID. THOUGT THE TECHNICAL ASPECT IS EVIDENT IN LEGENDS, IT IS MISSING IN TALES, WHERE THE WOODCUTTER OFTEN APPEARS AS A STRONG MAN UPROOTING TREES, QUITE ONLY RESORTING TO PHYSICAL POWER. THIS IMAGE IS STILL PREVALENT TODAY. Strength IS OVERESTIMATED IN COMPARISON WITH TECHNIQUE, THOUGH THE LATTER IS ESSENTIAL TO PREVENT THE RISKS. HOWEVER, THE PROFESSIONALS ARE DWALLING ON THIS TECHNICAL COMPETENCE FOR A WORK ONCE RESERVED TO A SMALL GROUP, NOW TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS, AND SHARED AMONG LOCALS AND FOREIGNERS. FINALLY WE DO NOT FORGET THE "DECEPTION" SIDE, I. E THE EFFICIENT INTELLIGENCE THAT OVERCOMES THE ENCOUNTERED OBSTACLE, CALLED "METIS" BY ANCIENT GREEKS AND ALREADY CONFERRED ON ENGINEERS AS WELL AS ON WOODCUTTERS

Full textThis thesis is a collection of three essays in labour economics and applied econometrics. The first two essays investigate workers productivity and their effort choice in a tree-planting firm. The third essay studies community cooperation in a public good experiment. Beyond the econometric techniques, the convergence point of this thesis is the question of how individuals incorporate external factors into their choices. How work fatigue affects productivity, how productivity shocks affect workers' choice of effort, and how social interactions affect community cooperation. Understanding and measuring the relevance of these external factors is important for designing incentives that influence individuals to act in a desired way. Appropriate incentives are the best way to regulate behaviour without imposing restrictions and rules that are costly to enforce and may create social frictions. From the first two chapters on productivity of tree planters two interesting findings stand out. First, workers' earnings can be increased by simply rearranging the working week in different work spells. This could be an inexpensive way for certain firms to increase their labour productivity. Second, planters' optimal choice of effort depends on productivity shocks. This means that effort incentives may have heterogenous effects due to the particular shocks experienced by each worker. From the third chapter, I find that involving community leaders in the decision of contributing or not to a public good enhance community cooperation. The presence of local leaders triggers cooperative behaviour that is unconditional and independent of the expected actions of other community members.

Full textThis thesis reports on the nature of the relationship to the forest of former employees migrants settled in the former logging camps. It is deployed on a dual approach diachronic and synchronic. The diachronic approach is divided into two time scales: the "pre-industrial age" and "industrial age". This fragmentation of the past this work has provided two of the three parts on which it is articulated. Regarding the first temporality, it reconstructs the living conditions of populations and the mode of management predominate in the forest before installation and the influence of the forest industry. The analysis reveals that "the pre-industrial age" people lived mainly in the forest and they managed sustainably. The second, puts the populations in the world of work sites and demonstrates that with the creation of wage employment, the latter, did longer perceived the forest as a fundamental economic alternative. It sheds light on social dynamics imported by the rise of wage labor: the modernization of localities, changing patterns of living, social needs, attitudes and the easing of relations of dependence of households to the forest. It puts forward the central role of employment in maintaining pressure on household forest land resources. The latter approach leans on the post-employment and examines the return of populations to the massive exploitation of the forest because of the widespread insecurity and lack of alternatives. Thus, after carrying out the comparison of two approaches used, the thesis leads to the assertion of the existence of non-sustainable management of forests in the old workings
