Mn/acetylacetone chelate was synthesized using Mn(CH3COO)2·4H2O as raw material, methanol as the solvent, and acetylacetone as the chelating agent. The ultraviolet (UV)-absorption peak of the synthesized chelate was found around 298 nm. CaMn7O12 sol was subsequently prepared using the Mn/AcAc chelate as the Mn source and calcium nitrate as the calcium source. Lead zirconate titanate nanopowder Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PZT) was prepared by modified sol-gel method with 1-propanol as solvent and acetylacetone as stabilizer. The microstructure and particle size measurements at different heat treatment conditions were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis. It was found that the PZT nanoparticles calcinated at 600 °C showed mean diameter of 75-125 nm with high crystallinity of perovskite-type structure.

Nanocrystalline SrTiO3 particle/polymer composite film was synthesized from a titanium–organic film and strontium ion in aqueous solution by applying a direct current (dc) field. The titanium–organic precursor was synthesized from acetylacetone-modified titanium isopropoxide and a methacrylate derivative. Ultraviolet treatment of the titanium–organic film decreased the leaching of Ti moieties from the precursor film during dc treatment. Crystalline SrTiO3 particles were formed in the precursor films on stainless-steel substrates under a dc field above 40 °C without a high-temperature process.

Lanthanum and neodymium titanates were prepared by a sol-gel route. Synthesis of La2Ti2O7 from pure alkoxide precursors yielded an intermediate perovskite type phase, La(1–x)TiO3, which partially transformed to La2Ti2O7 on heating to 1500 °C. Substitution of the lanthanum acetylacetonate for alkoxide precursor yielded La2Ti2O7 without any intermediate phase at a very low temperature of 700 °C. Sintering of the La2Ti2O7 gel powder yielded a highly dense ceramic with ∼97% theoretical density. Similar sintering treatment resulted in ∼92% theoretical density for Nd2Ti2O7.
