Abstract:
This book is a continuation of the lively debate launched in Dall'oggetto estetico all'oggetto artistico which the same editors published with Firenze University Press. The argument of the book is the organic link connecting the two thematic axes that define the ambit of aesthetics: the theory of perception and reflection on the arts. The apparent tautology of the title is intended to stress how the interpenetration of perception and work of art is structural and organic, thus calling up the theoretical urgency of this problem for an effective understanding of the dynamics of the sense of art as a "symbolic form" in which the relation between the mind and the world is embodied in an exemplary manner. The book is divided into three sections. The first presents nuclei of reflection emerging from unconventional contemporary perspectives. The second addresses various angles of the theory of perception. Finally, the third part explores several cases in which contemporary artists have tackled the link between expressive practice and the articulation of perception.

Abstract:
Chapter 8, ‘On the Origins of Theatre and its Link to the Past: The Schaubühne’s Antiquity Projects of 1974 and 1980’, retraces another approach from the 1970s. Instead of explicit politicization, the Schaubühne reflected on the past’s inaccessibility and its consequences in both of its projects. Regarding Grüber’s The Bacchae (1974) the point is made that the text’s dismemberment and the creation of unrelated enigmatic images of the past reveal the impossibility of constructing an identity by referring back to this past. Peter Stein’s Oresteia (1980) reflected on the ambiguity of an old text written in a long-dead language and on the problems of how to bring it back to life again, this way creating a new form of philosophical theatre. The two projects mark the end of 200 years of the Bildungsbürgertum’s affinity with ancient Greek culture by shattering the assumptions on which this identification was founded.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes the cohomology of Higgs isocrystals, which are introduced to replace the notion of Higgs bundles. The link between these two notions uses Higgs envelopes and calls to mind the link between classical crystals and modules with integrable connections. After discussing Higgs isocrystals and Higgs crystals, cohomology of Higgs isocrystals, and representations of the fundamental group, the chapter presents the main result: the construction of a fully faithful functor from the category of Higgs (iso)crystals satisfying an overconvergence condition to that of small generalized representations. It also proves the compatibility of this functor with the natural cohomologies and concludes by comparing the cohomology of Higgs isocrystals with Faltings cohomology.

Full text
Abstract:
Christoffel introduced in 1875 a special class of words on a binary alphabet, linked to continued fractions. Some years laterMarkoff published his famous theory, called nowMarkoff theory. It characterizes certain quadratic forms, and certain real numbers by extremal inequalities. Both classes are constructed by using certain natural numbers, calledMarkoff numbers; they are characterized by a certain diophantine equality. More basically, they are constructed using certain words, essentially the Christoffel words. The link between Christoffelwords and the theory ofMarkoffwas noted by Frobenius.Motivated by this link, the book presents the classical theory of Markoff in its two aspects, based on the theory of Christoffel words. This is done in Part I of the book. Part II gives the more advanced and recent results of the theory of Christoffel words: palindromes (central words), periods, Lyndon words, Stern–Brocot tree, semi-convergents of rational numbers and finite continued fractions, geometric interpretations, conjugation, factors of Christoffel words, finite Sturmian words, free group on two generators, bases, inner automorphisms, Christoffel bases, Nielsen’s criterion, Sturmian morphisms, and positive automorphisms of this free group.

Link, Albert, and Michael B. Boger. The Art and Science of Business Valuation. Praeger, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400614521.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of business valuations has exploded over the past decade, as has the number of would-be valuators. Link and Boger provide a sorely needed introductory overview of business valuation methods that points clearly to the limitations of the application of valuation and the strength and weaknesses of valuation tools. While Link and Boger cover the mechanical science of business valuation, they also concentrate on the intuitive art of valuation, emphasizing the distinction between the two. Based on more than three decades of valuation experience and teaching of the associated methodologies, they give the novice valuator an understanding of the elements of art and science in the practice of business valuation and an appreciation that both elements are important. A valuable tool for students and professionals dealing with business valuation issues.

Abstract:
Environmental criminology emphasizes the importance of situational factors associated with increased risk in terms of crime opportunities. One branch of research in this field is oriented toward strengthening the scientific approach to understanding the link between exposure to risk and crime. To achieve this, we need data about how potential victims and potential offenders spend their time, and what places they visit as part of their daily activities. This chapter lays out the potential of novel data sets and then considers in detail two of these new approaches. The first approach involves utilizing advances in technology and sensing to develop bespoke surveys created with specific research studies in mind. The second makes use of existing “big data” or “open-access data” sources on people’s everyday interactions with the environment, and combines multiple data sources to make inferences about routine activities and their link to perception of crime and place.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the black belt Hoodoo complex between the two world wars, with particular emphasis on the demise of Dr. Buzzard. Also known as Stepheney Robinson, Dr. Buzzard is Hoodoo's most famous conjurer. His conjure was free of exotic influences; he used only noncommercial products, he was a living link with the old plantation Hoodoo folk religion, and his life spanned Hoodoo development through several of its rapidly changing stages. This chapter discusses the diversification in spiritual merchandising in the period between World Wars I and II and how it contributed to an ever-strengthening subversion and undermining of Hoodoo's traditional old black belt practice. It also considers the impact of the medical community's attack on midwifery, Hoodoo's thriving and powerful link with the black folk medicine tradition. This period witnessed the merging of Hoodoo, dream interpretation, sign interpretation, the relationship between Hoodoo and the numbers, the rise of candle shops, and the domination of the Hoodoo marketplace by commercial sites and supply houses.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the link between the government debt-to-GDP ratio and real per capita income growth in Italy over 1861-2007. By estimation of a standard production function, we find support for the hypotheses of a negative relation between the two variables which appears to work mainly through reduced investment. A descriptive analysis of fiscal policy in 1880-1914 (when the negative correlation between the two variables is particularly strong) and 1985-2007 (when the correlation appears to break down when debt starts declining) suggests that differences in the timing of fiscal consolidation, as well as in the size and composition of the budget, are additional significant explanatory factors.

Ives based his “Hawthorne” movement on various stiroes of Hawthorne’s, and one novel – The House of the Seven Gables – that he names, though with only a few hints of what musical passages link to what stories. Two other Ives pieces, the subsequent “The Celestial Railroad” (based on an eponymous Hawthorne story, a satire of John Bunyan’s Pilgrims’ Progress) and the scherzo of the Fourth Symphony, share material with the “Hawthorne” movement, and the parallels say much about the Concord Sonata’s philosophical underpinnings.

Pollard, Tanya. Imitating the Queen of Troy. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198793113.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 2, “Imitating the Queen of Troy,” explores responses to Greek tragic women in Kyd’s Spanish Tragedy and Shakespeare and Peele’s Titus Andronicus, two early revenge tragedies that both feature raging, grieving mothers and sacrificial young women framed among Greek allusions. Both plays also reflect metatheatrically on the nature of tragedy and link it with appeals to sympathy, suggesting that their attention to Greek legacies and tragic female icons accompanies a broader interest in the genre and its effects. Tracing Kyd’s Greek training at Merchant Taylors’ School, and Peele’s Greek literary experience at Oxford, the chapter identifies Greek debts in these two early commercial tragedies as establishing a crucial foundation for the genre’s development in England.

Abstract:
Within the study of sociolinguistic variation and change, two approaches have been developed that attempt to link individual speaker behavior with the study of the community. One approach makes use of “linguistic grouping,” examining the linguistic conditioning of individual speakers and looking for social correlates of the resulting groups. Another approach is the detailed analysis of individual speakers in different social situations. This chapter presents an overview of these two research traditions. It provides analyses across groups and individuals in the English spoken on the island of Bequia. Two well-studied grammatical variables constitute the linguistic focus of this research: The absence of copula/auxiliary be and existential constructions. The discussion compares the linguistic conditioning of these features in the speech of individuals who have left Bequia for long periods of time with that of their stay-at-home peers.

Hodges, John R. Standardized Mental Test Schedules. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198749189.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses standardized mental test schedules. Many brief standardized assessment tools have been advocated over the past two or three decades but many have largely fallen into disuse. This chapter focuses, therefore, on two of the most commonly used brief assessment schedules: the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) with an analysis of their strengths, weaknesses, and applications. The MoCA is freely available and a link to the website is included. They are contrasted with the ACE-III which is described in Chapter 7. The chapter also describes two longer tests which are widely used in dementia research: the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS) and the Cambridge Cognitive Examination–Revised (CAMCOG-R). Finally, it includes a description of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale–Cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog), which is used widely in drug evaluation studies.

Abstract:
This chapter chronicles the growing conflict between the Black Power movement—an extension of the civil rights movement seeking the formation of black political and community institutions—and unionized public employees in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Beginning with the United Federation of Teachers strike in 1968 over community control in Ocean Hill-Brownsville (New York City), the chapter also shows how two teacher strikes in Newark (1970, 1971) drove apart the Black community and a majority white teacher union. A close examination of letters to the imprisoned President of the American Federation of Teachers shows that critics of both urban black populations and unionized teachers had begun to link the two groups together as “unproductive” threats to law and order and economic prosperity.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyses the relationship between the two related concepts of the responsibility to protect (R2P) and the protection of civilians (POC) with particular emphasis on how their relationship has played out in the context of United Nations peacekeeping operations. It begins by providing an overview of the main similarities and differences between R2P and POC before moving on to examine various attempts to link the two concepts with specific reference to their application within UN peacekeeping operations. The final section analyses some of the main criticisms levelled against their linkage. The chapter concludes that a de-coupling strategy is unlikely to succeed, in part because POC can never be made completely apolitical and uncontroversial. As UN peacekeepers are called upon to operationalize both the R2P and POC agendas, a key policy challenge will be ensuring that the relationship between the two does not become counter-productive.

Abstract:
This chapter serves to explain the link between a curricular renewal project that has already been completed and one that is envisaged as an aspirational goal and serves as the focus of the book. The Physicianship Curriculum has its origins in courses introduced in 1998 and that evolved over two decades in the undergraduate medical program at McGill University. The innovative modules and learning activities were initially rolled out under the ambit of two distinct conceptual streams: professionalism and healing in medicine. Ongoing development continued using “physicianship” as a new descriptive label. Physicianship refers to the dual roles of the physician: the physician as professional and as healer. The flagship course of the physicianship component of McGill’s medical school curriculum has been a 4-year longitudinal apprenticeship; it is described in detail.

This chapter explores the links commonly made between psychiatric disorder and individual violence. To this end it: first, looks at the evidence concerning the relationship between psychiatric disorder and violent behaviour, examining a range of empirical data, including the issue of whether it is possible to predict violence in those with mental illness; second, it draws on a range of ideas to explore how we can best understand the continuing, often exaggerated, assumptions of a close link between the two; and third and finally, it considers the implications of both the empirical data and the explanatory ideas for mental health policy.
