Abstract:
Why, and how, did Germans listen to symphonic music during the Second World War? This chapter focuses on wartime Munich, where there was a strong increase in performances owing to expanded demand by listeners. Most work on concert-hall life in this period echoes clichéd claims regarding the relation between culture and barbarism; this chapter seeks instead to explore the everydayness of the practice, which embodied a social habit that remained fundamentally unchanged from before the war and continued unchanged after it. One might speak in this context of the “regime of listening” that governed behavioral norms in the Western concert hall more generally. In this sense, the chapter argues that it is easier to make sense of how and why Germans listened to music during the war if we worry less about their nationality and concentrate more on the connection of this phenomenon to sensory cultures in the period more broadly.

Solomon, Norman. 8. Judaism today. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199687350.003.0009.

Abstract:
No religion has emerged unchanged into the 21st century. Increasing secularization of Western governments has undermined the power of religious leadership and people’s values have changed. Lots of people have abandoned organized religion. ‘Judaism today’ examines the impact of postmodernist thinking in recent times on Judaism. World Jewry has found itself at the centre of two 20th-century events that have affected it in unique ways: the trauma of the Shoah, or Holocaust, and the establishment of the State of Israel. Four areas in which Jewish thought has developed since the Second World War are considered: Zionism, Holocaust theology, God, and Feminism.

Abstract:
Venezuela experienced slow economic growth during the 2000s. The economy suffered a recession in the early years of the period and during the international crisis of 2008, but most labour market indicators improved and moved along with the business cycle over the period. The chapter shows that the only indicators that did not improve were the composition of employment by occupational position and the percentage of workers registered with social security, which remained essentially unchanged. Most of the labour market indicators were affected negatively by the international crisis, and some of them had not recovered their pre-crisis levels by 2012.

Abstract:
On 28 February 2014, Russian forces moved out of their base on the Black Sea into Crimea, triggering a crisis with Ukraine that quickly spread to Eastern Ukraine. Russia has attempted to justify its actions in Ukraine. On close analysis, no argument is adequate to avoid the charge of aggression, which is any serious violation of United Nations Charter Article 2(4). Article 2(4) is no mere treaty rule. It is jus cogens, a peremptory norm, meaning it is durable, impervious to modification. Facts on the ground in Ukraine may remain unchanged without sufficient international pressure. Regardless, Russia’s presence will remain unlawful.

Abstract:
This chapter describes elastic scattering events, where the wavelength of the scattered light is unchanged from that of the incident light and conservative scattering, scattering without absorption, sometimes closely approximated in clouds. The scattering regime, scattering versus wavelengths and scatterer size are introduced. Polarization in scattering is described by the Stokes vector and the polarization ellipse. Molecular (Rayleigh) scattering is presented and its atmospherically-important inelastic component, Raman scattering (the Ring effect) quantified. Mie scattering for spherical particles is described as is the commonly-used Henyey-Greenstein Mie phase function approximation. Non-spherical scatterers are introduced. The Ångstrom exponent and the expansion of phase functions in Legendre polynomials are described.

Blake, Randolph. Binocular Rivalry. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0105.

Full text
Abstract:
: Binocular rivalry epitomizes the essence of a perceptual illusion in that it involves a compelling dissociation of retinal stimulation and visual experience: dissimilar monocular stimuli appear and disappear reciprocally and unpredictably over time, even though retinal images of both stimuli remain unchanged. Thus binocular rivalry is instigated when dissimilar visual stimuli are imaged on corresponding areas of the two eyes. These dissimilarities can arise from differences in form (both simple and complex), color, or direction of motion. This beguiling phenomenon—binocular rivalry—affords the psychologist a potent means for probing visual processing outside of awareness and the neurophysiologist a strategy for studying neural dynamics. Related concepts including bistable perception, interocular suppression, and neural dynamics are explored.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how pregnancy manuals and literature, from the Edo period until present day, advocate strict weight management and a restrictive dietary regime for the mother, warning that maternal and fetal well-being are dependent upon the mother's ability to control her appetite and engage in self-sacrifice. Despite the medicalization of birth practices in the Meiji era (1868–1912), folk wisdom restrictions on pregnancy foods remains unchanged; traditional Japanese foods, such as brown rice, tofu, and fish are considered the proper diet for the pregnant body, while “foreign foods” endanger maternal and fetal health. The chapter also notes the increasing association between the maternal and national body with the advent of modernity.

Full text
Abstract:
The linearised nonlocal kinetic equation is solved analytically for impurity scattering. The resulting response function provides the conductivity, plasma oscillation and Fermi momentum. It is found that virial corrections nearly compensate the wave-function renormalizations rendering the conductivity and plasma mode unchanged. Due to the appearance of the correlated density, the Luttinger theorem does not hold and the screening length is influenced. Explicit results are given for a typical semiconductor. Elastic scattering of electrons by impurities is the simplest but still very interesting dissipative mechanism in semiconductors. Its simplicity follows from the absence of the impurity dynamics, so that individual collisions are described by the motion of an electron in a fixed potential.

Puntis, John. Necrotizing enterocolitis. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198759928.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Necrotizing enterocolitis is a common and serous disease predominantly affecting premature newborns, with an incidence, morbidity, and mortality that has remained unchanged for several decades. Around 7% of infants between 500g and 1500g birth weight are affected, with the disease often manifesting with vomiting, bilious aspirates, distended abdomen, and blood in stools around 8–10 days of age. Medical management includes decompression of the gastrointestinal tract via a nasogastric tube, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and bowel ‘rest’ (total parenteral nutrition). Surgical intervention is required for intestinal perforation or ongoing deterioration despite medical management. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and includes genetic predisposition, gastrointestinal immaturity, imbalance in microvascular tone, abnormal intestinal microbiological colonization, and a highly immunoreactive intestinal mucosa. Breast milk feeds appear to confer some degree of protection.

Abstract:
Death from neurological causes is a massive issue in maternal mortality, and the rate of deaths from neurological causes has remained essentially unchanged for the past thirty years. Two of the most common neurological causes of death are stroke and intracranial hemorrhage. These medical emergencies can be more challenging to diagnose and treat in the parturient. This is largely due to the physiologic changes that occur during pregnancy and in the postpartum period, but fetal considerations are also a factor. This chapter focuses on the pathophysiology, assessment, and management of stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage in pregnancy. A thorough understanding of each of these components is necessary to ensure appropriate and timely care delivery for optimal outcome in the setting of these neurologic emergencies.

Abstract:
For over two centuries, the criteria for the detention and involuntary treatment of people with mental disorders in conventional mental health laws have remained fundamentally unchanged. They have been based on a combination of (1) a diagnosis of some form of ‘mental disorder’, generally loosely defined, if at all; and (2) the presence of risk of harm to the person or to others. The lack of change may be interpreted as evidence that such law works well. More likely, the reason for its persistence is the lack of a ‘voice’ of the largely socially excluded people who are subject to such laws. The broadly drawn nature of these criteria, it is suggested, contribute to the ‘shadow of coercion’ that continues to loom over the practice of psychiatry.
