Abstract:
High-quality and user-friendly patient information material (PIM) is essential for understanding and accepting a new care programme. When optimising the PIM of the integrated, cross-sectoral psycho-oncological (isPO) care programme, the design of the fifth element of the patient information strategy—the patient-friendly website—was still pending. In this paper, the iterative design process of the patient-friendly isPO website is described. We applied the participatory health research (PHR) approach to enable high levels of participation of its respective end-users (e.g., cancer survivors), service providers, and experts. The design included six steps: (1) initiation, (2) planning, (3) initial idea exploration, (4) creation of a first working version, (5) three optimisation loops, and (6) dissemination. An exploratory mixed-methods design has been used. Qualitative data collection included document analysis, interviews, and participatory action research (PAR) loops with focus groups. Finally, the quality of the newly designed website was quantitatively assessed with the UPIM-Check, a user-friendly instrument for assessing and optimising PIM. The PHR approach was indispensable for the design of our needs-oriented, patient-friendly website. Participants’ high levels of participation strongly contributed to the products’ quality. The final descriptive statistical evaluation shows that the final website was rated very good on average by its end-users.

Abstract:
In the digital age when many organizations initiate and experience transformations as a reaction to wider societal changes, there is discussion about functionality, usability and availability of library services. Studies report a decreasing number of library visitors as result of the pervasive presence of the Internet as a faster source for getting resources, public`s lack of knowledge about the library services, etc. To maintain relevance for the public, more libraries apply principles of service design to provide an effective customer experience. For national libraries websites are of high importance as gateways to library resources and media to communicate institutions` objectives. The aim of this article is to analyse how the principles of service design are reflected in the online services offered by the National Library of Latvia. The research methods rely both on secondary data on audience needs and involve application of the service design principles to the website of National Library of Latvia. Results highlight the majority of analysed libraries apply the basic principles of service design and the focus is to provide the user friendly experience in libraries` databases and repositories. The website of the library provides limited user friendly experience in library`s and only partially follows the principles of service design.

Abstract:
Usability is an important aspect that every website should focus more. It tells us how well and success website will function with real users. Many people often think usability tests are expensive and time-consuming. It can be a cost-effective and time saver with usability testing instead of spending more time fixing an unusable website. This study evaluates the usability of encyclopedia websites by using automated usability testing tools and questionnaire methods. The questionnaire was developed based on a standard form called Website Analysis and Measurement Inventory (WAMMI) that identified 20 common usability questions divided into five categories. Each category deals with one aspect of usability. Simultaneously, the automated usability testing tools used in this study were Pingdom and GT Metrix to calculate and analyse the website performance of selected encyclopedia websites based on website components including page load time, media size and overall web performance grades. This study could help web designer, developer, and practitioners design better and more user-friendly encyclopedia websites.

Abstract:
Today's youth use their mobile phones in the same way as earlier generations used their computers. Therefore, web designers need to make websites mobile-friendly when aiming for the younger generation’s attention. In collaboration with Ashoka and Raoul Wallenberg Academy, within a project named Changemakers’ Yard, this thesis investigates what factors in terms of content and design youth in the age of 16-23 appreciate on a mobile application or website. The outcome of the thesis aims to guide web designers on what to keep in mind when designing mobile applications or websites for today’s youth. A quantitative and qualitative research was done by performing interviews, an online survey and two customized lectures with the target group. Data and comments from the research were then analyzed and summarized to form a paper prototype which was developed into a digital prototype. Both prototypes were evaluated via user tests with the target group. Finally, ten guidelines were compiled on what youth appreciate when it comes to the content and design on mobile-friendly websites. The guidelines focused on communication and usability, as well as site owners taking responsibility for updates and minimize the amount of data used. The responsibility of keeping the website updated as well as minimizing the amount of data, were both new findings. In addition, arguing against prior research, there were indications of differences between the genders regarding preferred content.

Abstract:

This project is concerned with identifying and investigating a problem faced by students undertaking studies in opera, namely, readily available performance related materials for students of opera to consult when preparing for a performance. The purpose of this project is to develop an internet-based resource containing a range of information about operas, musical scores and their interpretation, opera recordings, opera literature, opera composers, opera performers, and opera companies as a solution to this problem. The Project uses aspects of opera interpretation and opera libretti as a theoretical framework.

In order to accomplish these outcomes, this project demonstrates that no single source of information that is presently available in print or electronic form is comprehensive, reliable and convenient enough to provide opera students with information necessary for use in a production. The Project highlights the need for an electronic resource that is comprehensive for opera students.

The analysis of the usability of website research literature indicates that successful electronic resources embody the principles of: "24/7", 'anywhere', 'anytime' access; ease-of-access, user-friendly website design; and resources relevant to the specific enquiry of the user in their design.

The Project leads to the conclusion that no single source of information is comprehensive enough for an opera student to acquire, process and assimilate all of the information necessary for use in a production.

The overarching product of the project is a design and guidelines for the development of an internet-based resource aimed at eliminating the lack of performance related materials in the field of opera study. I call this resource Operapaedia.

Abstract:
The first step to a quality website is to plan design, layout, and content with an understanding of audiences’ information needs. User-friendly design principles are also important to a website’s effectiveness. Web writing needs to be more concise than other types of writing, taking into account the reading practices of visitors to websites. Including a broad range of content makes the site a go-to resource and increases visibility. Usability testing once a site is developed also offers important insights that can guide improvements. Keeping a site fresh with new content and marketing the site also enhance its value.

In the present day scenario the World Wide Web (WWW) is an important and popular information search tool. It provides convenient access to almost all kinds of information – from education to entertainment. It also makes global information available at our fingertips. This problem of ‘long download time' is relevant not only to Web users but also to the authors and designers of websites, as websites that take a long time to download are rarely or less frequently visited. In fact it is felt necessary that the website shall adhere strictly the W3C guidelines to achieve optimum web design and promote quality of websites so as to make the website safer and user friendly and to address the possible reduction of down load waiting time of web pages. A case study with reference to the various Universities in India is discussed in this chapter and assesses the quality of web design about their status of Quality and user friendliness.

Abstract:
Government websites are the easy sources of getting access to the services offered by governmental organizations. These websites provide manifold benefits to their users i.e. efficiency of use, cost decline, effective communication between citizens and government, delivery of different service, transparency and time saving. However, users cannot get full benefit out of these services if the e-government websites are not interactive and user friendly. Keeping this view into consideration, study investigated the usability concerns of the e-government websites in Saudi Arabia. Cognitive walk-through is selected as the implication method to figure out usability related traits by the real users of the interfaces. Findings from the study showed that these websites are partially usable for the users, as they lack some of the major concerns of the usability. Evaluation results showed the clear picture of the usability features of the selected websites of Saudi Arabia both in positive and negative ways. Furthermore, recommendations are given to improve overall quality of these websites.

Abstract:
In this interconnected, socially networked, 24/7, multidimensional, media-centric culture, your students are doing just fine creating, performing, and making things without your help. Thanks to the proliferation of user-friendly, intuitive software applications to create, capture, and perform music, as well as websites that allow easy showing and sharing of these creations, your students can lead very productive, creative, and expressive lives without the baggage of learning traditional music notation and computer code. This realization sends shudders through some of our fellow professors, but nonetheless it is a reality of our times. You can choose to fight these trends and hold fast to the traditions of an educational system designed for another era and different priorities, or you can meet your students where they are. Much of education has been about the transmission of subject-specific content with a focus on the individual. This fosters competition for the teacher’s attention and top grades. Hierarchical classrooms perpetuate the notion of teachers as authority figures and decision makers while supplicant students wait for the teacher’s knowledge to be bestowed upon them. Socialization is rarely encouraged inside the classroom. On the other hand, the modern workplace is flattening its hierarchical structure and becoming ever more dependent upon critical thinking skills, collaboration, teamwork, and shared decision making. In fact, many corporate offices are being designed physically to foster collaboration through shared offices and informal small lounges where workers can gather to brainstorm. Learning to work with others is a lifelong endeavor. These skill sets don’t develop in a vacuum. They need to be nurtured through modeling and experience. As suggested by John-Steiner, students need to be socialized into the culture of collaborative work and the kinds of creative and critical thinking the new workplace requires. As you will discover, collaborative work yields processes and results that are far richer than any that a single person’s expertise can produce.
