Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the dynamics of ephemerality within consumer tribes by conceptualizing how tribes constitute, disperse and reconstitute. Building upon assemblage thinking, a philosophical approach that redistributes agency from the subject to a web of interconnected human–material actants, this paper shows that tribes manifest via hybrid assemblages of people, things and ideas. Design/methodology/approach Insights are drawn from a three-year assemblage-oriented ethnographic study of a salsa-dancing tribe, specifically their ephemeral gatherings across multiple sites without hierarchical organization. Methods include observations as a consumer–participant, producer–participant and in-depth interviewing. Findings Introduces a framework documenting how tribes disperse temporarily and reconstitute via a dual process of ascription and distribution. Tribes reconstitute when consumers reproduce an assemblage that effectively overcomes a meshwork of practical challenges. Consumers ascribe to the standards of the tribe while, alternatively, tribes distribute the assemblage beyond the immediate group. Research limitations/implications Conceptualizes the socio-technical dynamics that tribes mobilize to disassemble and reassemble through ephemeral gatherings. Proposes a framework on hybrid interdependencies, including not only participants but also techniques, devices and sites. Practical implications While previous research shows that tribes can collapse, the authors propose that marketers can intervene to foster long-term resilience. As tribes disperse, consumer and marketing efforts operate at different temporal sequences to enable tribal reconstitutions. Originality/value Contributes to the literature on consumer tribes by theorizing ephemerality per ascription and distribution mechanisms.

Abstract:
Four genera and 58 species of the web-spinning or leaf-rolling sawfly subfamily Pamphiliinae are recognized in the Russian Far East and Korea. Pamphilius belokobylskiji sp. nov. and Pamphilius graciloides sp. nov. are described from Primorskij Kraj (Russia) and Korea. Pamphilius zinovjevi Shinohara, 1988, is syn. nov. of Pamphilius ussuriensis Shinohara, 1988. Lectotypes are designated for Lyda hilaris Eversmann, 1847, Lyda kumamotonis Matsumura, 1912, Lyda sapporensis Matsumura, 1912, Pamphilius virescens Malaise, 1931, and Neurotoma sibirica Gussakovskij, 1935. Pamphilius aucupariae Vikberg, 1971, and Pamphilius hilaris (Eversmann, 1847) are newly recorded from Korea. Keys are given to separate the two tribes, four genera and 58 species. Additional collection records from Primorskij Kraj and Korea and photographs of all the species treated are given. The number of the specimens examined for each species, in total over 16000, is noted under the respective species. We undertook molecular analyses of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) for 597 specimens and of the nuclear gene sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (NaK) for 271 specimens. Based on the results, we assess the monophyly of each supraspecific taxon and each intrageneric species group or subgroup and the hypotheses about their relationships. The tribe Neurotomini with its single genus Neurotoma, the tribe Pamphiliini and the genus Onycholyda are considered monophyletic with 99–100% UFBoot supports, whereas monophyly of the genus Pamphilius is not sufficiently supported by the COI results. The three available datasets, namely, morphology (Shinohara, 2002b), COI genes (present work) and NaK genes (present work), support three different hypotheses of relationships within the tribe Pamphiliini.

Abstract:
Our knowledge of cytological data published on members of the family Gesneriaceae is summarized and critically evaluated in the light of current taxonomic treatments and phylogenetic hypotheses. There are about 1000 published chromosome counts, covering 56% of the genera but only 18% of the species. In particular the New World tribes Beslerieae and Napeantheae and the Old World tribe Didymocarpeae are underexplored at generic level. In Gesneriaceae chromosome data are a valuable source of taxonomic characters. From our current knowledge of the phylogenetic relationships in the family we know that basic chromosome numbers in the New World subfamily Gesnerioideae appear to be rather conserved, but that a more complex pattern of genome evolution seems to be present among the Old World tribes. Both polyploidy and dysploid changes have played a significant role in the evolution of the family. However, the number of species for which both cytological and molecular data are available is at present too low to reach firm conclusions on ancestral basic chromosome numbers, particularly for the Old World group. To facilitate wider access to cytological data on the Gesneriaceae, a website has been developed (http://www.rbge.org.uk/rbge/web/search/index.jsp), which is introduced in this paper.

Abstract:
Between 1687 and 1702, the Euphrates River changed course and jeopardized the stability of the eastern Ottoman Empire when a large segment of it changed course. The abrupt channel shift became entangled in a complex web of troubles (climatic, epidemiological, political, and financial) that reinforced each other and left behind a profoundly altered ecological and political landscape in a rural region southwest of Baghdad. It facilitated the fall of a traditional center of power in the region and accelerated the rise of the Khaza’il tribe.

Abstract:
Based on a comparative discourse analysis of the 2001 English translation of the pioneering “beauty writer” Wei Hui’s semi-autobiographical novel Shanghai Baby and the original Chinese work (1999), this paper aims to demonstrate how the reception of non-specialist readers in the form of online book reviews is influenced by the politics of reception in the Western world as well as the translational shifts in the text. Building the investigation upon the nineteenth-century sinologist translation model that packages Chinese culture as clichéd Chineseness in addition to the Western reception model that packages Chinese women as reckless lovers and escapees from communist despotism, the study argues that largely subject to the stereotypical expectations of Western readers about the Third World culture and women, the shifts reinforcing the prevalent stereotypes in the translation overshadow the author’s original intention of speaking for a small tribe of young people exploring their unorthodox existence in China. Lastly, the study concludes with the affirmation of Shanghai Baby’s social impact on both host and source culture in an attempt to relate its significance to a global context.

Abstract:
Abstract The Royal Belum State Park (RBSP) is gazette as a reserve area in Malaysia is covered by 90% of forest and inhabited by mostly the Jahai tribes. One of the hardships of these indigenous Jahai is to retrieve drinkable water from clean water resource. Due to the constraint of development in the rural area of forest reserve RBSP, a sustainable water supply system project needs to ease the tribe. Hence, this study investigates the potential for a water supply system towards environmental sustainability as a starting point for an environmentally sustainable water supply project at RBSP. The investigation is conducted using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the existing literature with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The statement review method from Scopus and Web of Science databases have recognized 12 out of 84 related research articles searched worldwide on a topic related to the rural sustainable water supply. Findings from the 12 sustainable water supply research articles reveal two main considerations in determining the water supply which are the local context and water sources availability. Hence, a site visit to RBSP is recommended to further investigate the potential water supply system towards environmental sustainability at the research location.

Abstract:
In 2014, Tobii Tech and Eye Tribe released the first inexpensive non-contact eye tracking device, and eye tracking technology has been attracting more and more attention. It has long been said that gaze information can be used to infer a person's interests and attention, and the analysis of gaze position by eye tracking technology is also used for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In addition, with the spread of information and communication technology, the Internet has become the most used media for "obtaining information on hobbies and entertainment," surpassing books, magazines, and television for all age groups except those in their 60s in Japan, The majority of information gathering has shifted to web browsing. As a result, the information gap between those who can use the Internet to collect information and those who cannot use it well, so-called digital divide, has become one of the social problems. Based on these background, we attempted to develop an interaction system that presents search keyword to get related information by using the user's eyes while browsing the web. Based on analysis of user's gaze and accumulation of web pages viewed by each user, this system can provide search keywords that reflect a user's interest, such as Tourism information or history information. We believe that this system can support users' web browsing by assisting them in gathering information on sightseeing and travel, presenting them with unexpected facilities that they did not know about, and making it easy for them to obtain a variety of related information.

Abstract. The new weevil genus Igneonasus gen. nov. (type species: I. rudolphi sp. nov.) of the tribe Ceutorhynchini (Curculionidae: Conoderinae: Ceutorhynchitae) is described from the late Oligocene of Fossillagerstätte Enspel, Germany. The new genus differs from the similar genus Stenocarus Thomson, 1859 in the anterior margin of the pronotum, which is not raised, a pronotum without tubercles on the sides, and a femur without teeth. This weevil is the largest representative of this supertribe and the first fossil Curculionidae species described from the paleolake Enspel. In this ancient ecosystem, weevils were at least sometimes an important food resource for the cyprinid fish Palaeorutilus enspelensis.

Abstract:
Abstract American Indian (AI) women have the highest breast cancer mortality and lowest breast cancer screening rates in the U.S. The present study, in collaboration with the Yankton Sioux Tribe (YST) in South Dakota, sought to (1) identify the general public/professionals’ knowledge, attitudes, and needs for a mobile web app for breast cancer screening (wMammogram) intervention, and (2) inform development of the wMammogram intervention to improve Breast Cancer screening among YST women. Following a community-based participatory research approach, two focus groups were conducted in October 2020 with a total of 22 YST women aged 40-70 years, including 17 elderly women. Each group consisted of 11 community leaders, members, healthcare professionals. Qualitative analysis was conducted using grounded theory. Participants in both groups were generally favorable toward the wMammogram intervention, and noted a potential health benefit, particularly for women in their 50s to 60s. Key areas identified by participants for intervention include: (1) needs for better knowledge of breast cancer, screening, and prevention/early detection, (2) culturally tailored educational materials rooted in AI cultural values and beliefs (e.g., holistic wellness approach, Native lifestyles), (3) barriers (e.g., fear), (4) motivators (e.g., reminders), and (5) suggestions for acceptability (e.g., content and structure of messages). These results suggest that the wMammogram intervention, which is culturally tailored and addresses the community’s concerns, can be a feasible, acceptable, and effective tool to promote breast cancer screening among YST women. The results informed the development of an innovative health intervention to help reduce health disparities experienced in Indian Country.

Burnette, Catherine Elizabeth. "Unraveling the web of intimate partner violence (IPV) with women from one southeastern tribe: a critical ethnography." Diss., University of Iowa, 2013. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2449.

Full text
Abstract:
Indigenous women experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at a disproportionate and epidemic rate. A common thread among indigenous women's experiences is that of colonization, which has been linked to both IPV and other social ills. Many tools of domination and control used throughout colonization to subjugate and oppress indigenous peoples are consistent with the tactics of power and control used in IPV. Given the distinct history of colonization along with the absence of research on indigenous women from the Southeastern portion of the United States, the purpose of this critical ethnography was to understand the culture and context of IPV for women from a Southeastern tribe across the life course. Because they complimented and supplemented each other in their ability to increase understanding about indigenous women' experiences with IPV, critical theory, historical trauma, life course theory, and resilience theory guided this qualitative inquiry. Paulo Freire's vision of critical theory was used to conceptualize this dissertation within the specific historical context. Using Carspecken's critical ethnographic method, the relevant data collected for this study included 28 participant observation sessions with indigenous community members and 28 life histories with indigenous women. Data analysis followed Carpsecken's method of reconstructive analysis. The patterns of power and domination at the societal, community, and interpersonal levels were identified with the broader beliefs that might perpetuate IPV across generations. Results included key factors within the specific historical context of indigenous women that had salient linkage to IPV. The potential symptoms of historical loss and trauma, including alcohol abuse, IPV, and family breakdown, were highlighted. Women's emergent pattern of violence that occurred across the life course was delineated within the culturally specific family structure. Women's perceptions of experiences with the formal and informal support systems were explored. Likewise, the various coping strategies of women who experienced IPV were identified along with the culturally specific protective and risk factors across multiple levels. Women's suggestions for emancipation from oppression were highlighted along with the implications for social work practice and policy.

Mahmoodabadi, Majid. "KOREAN ANTHRACITE COAL CLEANING BY MEANS OF DRY AND WET BASED SEPARATION TECHNOLOGIES." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/mng_etds/18.

Full text
Abstract:
Korean coals are typically high rank anthracite characterized by high ash content and difficult cleaning characteristics. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the feasibility of treating various size fractions within the coal using an assortment of physical coal cleaning technologies. Dry cleaning is preferred due to the friability of the coal. As such, three pneumatic processes were tested including Ore Sorting for the plus 10 mm material, Air Table Separation for 10 x 1 mm fraction and Tribo-electric Separator for - 1 mm fraction. The Dense Medium Cyclone is known to be one of the most efficient separation processes and thus was evaluated for the cleaning of 10 x 1 mm coal. To realize the optimum performances from the Air Table and Rotary Tribo-electric Separator, their operational variables were systematically studied using a parametric experimental design. In addition, the dense medium cyclone and X-ray Transmission Sorting trials were performed under various medium densities and separation settings, respectively. A comparison of the cleaning performance revealed that the Dense Medium Cyclone and X-ray Transmission Sorting proved to provide the most effective results with maximum ash rejection and combustible recovery. The tribo-electric separation process was ineffective while the air table provided modest ash reduction potential.

Caliandro, A. "IL LAVORO AFFETTIVO DEI CONSUMATORI VOLTO ALLA CO-CREAZIONE DI VALORE SUI SOCIAL MEDIA: UN' INDAGINE NETNOGRAFICA." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/172622.

Full text
Abstract:
The affective labor of consumers in regards to the co-creation of value onto social media: a netnographic enquiry This work is, ideally, divided in two part. In the first one I address some theoretical issues, basically reflecting upon the concept of affective labor featured by Autonomist Marxism and Elisabeth Wissinger. In the second one I address some methodological issues, basically re-elaborating the netnographic method of Robert Kozinets. The aim of my thesis has been to study and understand in a systematic way the affective labor performed by consumers onto the social media, intended as a leading practice of co-creation of value. On one hand I define ‘affective labor’ as the ability of a social group, situated in a contingent social context, to arouse an affective flow and to fix it in transient shapes (emotions), in order to channel it toward a productive purpose. On the other hand I considered the ‘co-creation of value’ onto social media as an activity which pertains to the discourse of consumers rather than to the consumers per se. Therefore my guiding hypothesis: ‘Since the Internet is a discourse-created phenomena, it is hypnotizable that it would be a certain dynamic of consumer discourse at creating value, rather than the bodies of consumers’. Following this hypothesis I actually discovered that online co-creation of value not only depends on the discourse but also on a specific discursive dynamic hinged on as system of communicative frictions. As it is well-known online consumers create value since their communicative interactions are systematically monitored by companies, which (by means of techniques and devices for Sentiment Analysis) transform them in product innovation and brand reputation. Therefore my cognitive question: How do online consumers perform affective labor? Or, thorough which kind of practices online consumers do manage their affective investment in order to create that flux of information that companies harness and capitalize? In order to answer this qualitative question a drew on the netnographic method, basically developing a personal declination of it rather than just applying it. In order to do so I elaborated a ‘practice-based netnographic approach’, mainly drawing on Richard Rogers’ epistemological motto: ‘Follow the medium’. My empirical research has produced two key heuristics: the concepts of web tribe and narrations of self. On one hand, differently from classical tribal marketing, I conceive of a web tribe as a social space rather than a social group made out of people ‘in love with’ a particular brand. Specifically I define a web tribe as a flux of communication that: a) flows through and springs from specific ‘places’ of the 2.0 web (forums, blogs, social networks, etc); b) converges on specific brands or products; c) converges on specific topics of conversation. On the other hand I conceived of ‘narrations of self’ as common discursive practices through which the members of a web tribe valorise the brand and themselves. In this way online consumers interacting within a ‘tribal space’ come to converge on some shared practices by which defining the brand value and their identities, rather than on a specific brand value and on common definition of identity per se. Thus, I finally came out to the conclusion that the web tribe is a dispositif that catalyses and formalizes the affective flow of consumer; in this way the ‘tribal dispositive’ governs the affective labor of consumers organizing it in a form that is suitable to be harnessed and exploited by companies and brands.

AbstractIn Alaska, schools as structured do not work for far too many of Alaska’s students, especially Indigenous students. This chapter raises issues that are not being addressed in most discussions on the schooling and teacher crisis in Alaska. We call out the failure of the existing system of teacher preparation. We then move into a critical discussion around what is missing from the current deliberations around improving schooling outcomes in rural Alaska: how the history of colonization and assimilation efforts in Alaska has created and propagated the current situation. We explore recent proposals to transfer more authority over rural schools to tribes and local communities and ask whether tribes should rethink the entire enterprise of education in rural Alaska, by fully enacting tribal control and self-determination in education.

AbstractThis chapter examines the historical waterscapes of Indigenous Māori iwi (tribes) and hapū (sub-tribes) in the Waipā River (Aotearoa New Zealand). We highlight some of the principles of Te Ao Māori (the Māori world) that shaped Māori understandings and engagements with their ancestral waters and lands prior to colonisation. We explore how the arrival of Europeans resulted in Māori embracing new technologies, ideas, and biota, but always situating and adapting these new imports to fit within their Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies. In contrast, British colonial officials were unwilling to embrace such cross-cultural learnings nor allow Te Ao Māori to peacefully co-existent with their own world (Te Ao Pākehā). Military invasion, war, and the confiscation of Māori land occurred, which laid the foundations for environmental injustices.

AbstractAround the world, many societies are trying to create and apply apparatuses that recognise Indigenous interests in freshwater systems. Such policies and strategies often acknowledge Indigenous peoples’ rights and values they attached to specific waterways, and take the form of new legal agreements which are directed at reconciling diverse worldviews, values, and ways of life within particular environments. In this chapter we review one such arrangement: the co-governance arrangements between the Māori iwi (tribe) Ngāti Maniapoto and the New Zealand (Government) to co-govern and co-manage the Waipā River. We analysis where the new governance arrangements are enabling Ngāti Maniapoto to achieve environmental justice and find substantive faults most notably distributive inequities, lack of participatory parity, and inadequate recognition of Māori governance approaches.

Abstract:
AbstractInvasive species and their management represent a complex issue spanning social and ecological systems. Invasive species present existing and potential threats to the nature of ecosystems and the products and services that people receive from them. Humans can both cause and address problems through their complex interactions with ecosystems. Yet, public awareness of invasive species and their impact is highly uneven, and public support for management and control of invasive species can be variable. Public perceptions often differ markedly from the perspectives of concerned scientists, and perceptions and support for management are influenced by a wide range of social and ecological values. In this chapter, we present a broad survey of social science research across a diversity of ecosystems and stakeholders in order to provide a foundation for understanding the social and cultural dimensions of invasive species and plan more effective management approaches. This chapter also addresses tribal perspectives on invasive species, including traditional ecological knowledge, unique cultural dimensions for tribes, and issues critical to engaging tribes as partners and leaders in invasive species management. Recognizing that natural resource managers often seek to change people’s perceptions and behaviors, we present and discuss some promising approaches that are being used to engage human communities in ways that empower and enlist stakeholders as partners in management.

Abstract:
We examine how accurately the belief system or cultural concepts of Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, is reconstructed in the virtual world of the Internet. Nine Maori web sites were searched using a list of 44 key concepts in Maori culture. We registered how many pages within a particular web site contain each of the key concepts. These numbers were set up in a data matrix for further statistical analysis. The Multidimensional Scaling method was used to construct a spatial representation of Maori web sites in the space generated by the key concepts in Maori culture. Using the correlation coefficients between derived dimensions and the key concepts we interpreted three dimensions as General Cultural, Intra-tribe Dynamics and Educational. The position of each Maori web site in this space has been located and described.

Abstract:
In recent years both WikiQuals & CROS have implemented alternative models of Universities. Wikiquals is based on the Emergent Learning Model, presented at CELDA 2009, and CROS have developed their Alternative University since 2007 based on participant design. Whilst the Emergent Learning Model is derived from a series of projects and theories that developed from the use of eLearning and social media and have moved to real world activities, CROS started with a group of people engaging in real world activities and enhanced their educational model by using social media as a learning resource and environment. The Emergent Learning Model was derived from earlier theories, most notably the Open Context Model of Learning which is an open learning based on what had been learnt about pedagogy from earlier work with eLearning software. Consequently the model was built around an 'obuchenie' approach, looking at the evolving relationship between teachers and learners in the new learning contexts post Web 2.0. The Emergent Learning Model is an interpretation of the relationships between informal, non-formal and formal learning in line with the EUs post-Bologna requirements for i2020, redefining what we mean by each of these types of learning. Critically learning content is defined as 'structured learning opportunities without formal learning outcomes', or 'non-formal learning'. In Web2.0 the ability to publish is termed 'user-generated content', and we regard the ability to create 'learner-generated' content as an important element of emergent learning. The WikiQuals project is based on self-publishing learner-generated content at doctoral level, with each 'Sqolar' developing personal learning networks as part of a self-accrediting process. The Alternative University (AU) project was envisioned as developing a student-centred model of higher education for Romania and was initially a community of practice for Student NGOs members. The educational model evolves yearly and now comprises various learning programs derived from the following; supported learning, social learning and practical learning. Other learning resources and support are used, such as the Learning House, My Learning Tribe online community (social media) or The Game (gamification). The whole model is designed to support autonomous learning behaviour in students building a community of learners. The online community supports students' learning processes and grows with the model's capacity to support the learning community. Online tools used for social and/or learning purposes are evolving and adapting fast to the real needs of the learners. These act as rapid adaptive learning management systems or eco-systems and also indicate the reality and health of that community. So, the AU model is enhancing its capacity to generate learning and facilitate learners autonomy by matching and augmenting the real life experiences with the online. We will compare them given that WikiQuals is learner-centric personalised-learning concerned with self-accreditation, whereas CROS is student-centred, self-directed, social learning with a stronger focus on working within a community of practice.

In 2022 Joint Rail Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc2022-84111.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Locomotive multibody simulations are commonly used as a cost-effective tool to study, energy efficiency, wheel-rail wear, rolling contact fatigue, etc. The accuracy of the wheel-rail contact forces from multibody simulations depends on the correct modelling of the friction conditions. The friction coefficient is a function of the slip velocity, and it is influenced by several tribological parameters including, for example, material mechanical properties, environmental conditions and the presence of third body layers that vary spatially and temporally along the track. In most cases, generic friction-slip curves obtained from publications and public reports are used as inputs to the wheel-rail contact model in the locomotive simulations, as direct friction measurements using full-scale experimental set-ups are generally cost-prohibitive. A pathway to produce friction-slip curves from tribo-machine friction measurements is proposed in this paper. The pathway involves manufacturing discs from actual wheel and rail material samples to measure the traction coefficient at a spectrum of slip set points using a twin-disc tribo-machine. The tribo-machine results are scaled to be used in a locomotive multibody model that uses the modified Fastsim and a traction system co-simulation approach. Two friction curves for wet and dry conditions are processed and exemplified in a dynamic model.

Abstract:
The COVID Observatories project examines the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on climatic risks and food systems among Indigenous Peoples (IPs) around the world. In India, the focus is on the IPs living in the Nilgiri Biosphere, spread over parts of three states; Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, and includes five national parks and two wildlife sanctuaries (Figure 1). IPs are colloquially called ‘Adivasi’ or tribes and India is not a signatory to the IP declarations laid out by the UN. We use IP in this report to adhere international norms and reflect as media reports that tend to use IP and Adivasi, depending on the media portal.

Abstract:
While there is growing scholarship on the intersectional nature of people’s experience of marginalisation, analyses tend to ignore religion-based inequalities. A lack of Freedom of Religion and Belief (FoRB) undermines people’s possibilities of accessing services and rights and enjoying wellbeing (World Bank 2013; Narayan et al. 2000, Deneulin and Shahani 2009). In this paper, we discuss how religion and faith-based inequalities intersect with other horizontal and vertical inequalities, to create further exclusions within as well as between groups. We offer our experience of using participatory action research (PAR) methodologies to enable insights into lived experiences of intersecting inequalities. In particular, we reflect on intersecting inequalities in the context of India, and share some experiences of facilitating PAR processes with marginalised groups, such as Denotified Tribes (DNT). We introduce a FoRB lens to understand how DNT communities in India experience marginalisation and oppression. The examples discussed here focus on the intersection of religious belief with caste, tribal, gender and other socially constructed identities, as well as poverty. Through taking a PAR approach to working with these communities, we show how PAR can offer space for reflection, analysis, and sometimes action with relation to religion-based and other inequalities. We share some lessons that are useful for research, policy and practice, which we have learned about methods for working with vulnerable groups, about how religion-based inequalities intersect with others, and the assumptions and blind spots that can perpetuate these inequalities.
