Full textThis PhD thesis aims at examining the development of genuine poetics common to artists and painters in the Rome of Leo X. The purpose of this work is not to detect iconographic programs: it aims at identifying formal researches and shared aesthetics, which I will try to achieve by performing an inventory of topics, by describing the broader role of these pieces in the culture of their time and by analysing the practical consequences, in both fields, of these general aesthetic choices. I will begin by providing a brief overview of the Rome of Leo X and its humanistic and artistic sociability circles in chapter 1. In a second chapter, I will more precisely study the humanists’ discourse on the works of art at that time. In these texts, I will try to highlight common issues that artists and humanists could encounter in their practice such as imitation. I will then consider the question of the epic in poetry and the visual arts in chapter 3. I will try to show that Raphael’s Fire in the Borgo, traditionally interpreted as a tragedy in painting, should rather be understood as an epic painting. The final chapter will involve a study of the latin poetry of Pietro Bembo, Baldassare Castiglione and Andrea Navagero, the three poets who seem to have been closest to Raphael. I will try to show the convergence between poetry and painting by comparing these authors’ poetry of bucolic and pastoral inspiration with the decorative cycles carried out by Raphael, first at the Villa Farnesina of Agostino Chigi, and later at the Vatican in the apartments of cardinal Bibbiena and in the Loggie. I suggest that these decors should be read as places of memory of this neo-latin poetry

Full text3D characterization of trabecular bone has been widely studied, whereas few studies have focused on cortical bone despite its role in the mechanical strength of bone. Bone remodeling of the cortical bone leads to changes in size, shape and surface (with variations of the roughness related to the osteoclasts activity) of the pores of the cortical bone which consist essentially by Haversian canals and Volkmann. This process leads to cortical bone trabecularization. The 3D characterization of cortical bone can be performed using the usual parameters (derived from thé trabecular analysis) such as porosity, pore number, pore spacing, the pore diameter. . . However, these parameters describe the cortical bone structure globally and do not reflect changes related to each pore individually. Therefore, we suggested in this thesis new parameters to characterize the branching degree, the roughness and sinuosity/tortuosity of cortical bone pores. Our study is based on images of samples extracted from different femur sites (diaphysis , lower and upper neck) and acquired by synchrotron radiation micro-tomography with voxel size 2. 8um and 7. 5uni. The segmentation (canals Vs bone) using a simple threshold is sufficient to reach an accurate separation because of high contrast. However, the segmentation between osteons and cortical tissue, because of low contrast, is difficult. Therefore we developed a new method of 3D segmentation of osteons and various components of the cortical bone (canal, osteoid bone, interstitial bone) based on 3D Markov Random Fields (3D-MRF). Four 3D-MRF models have been suggested and compared to manual segmentation considered as reference segmentation

Full textWhat does inventing mean in architecture? This ages-old question is being strongly reevaluated nowadays. Indeed, the contemporary conditions of human habitat, characterized by the outside being exhausted, have considerably changed this activity. Architectural invention has always been based, in Western thought at least, on a spreading movement. The conception of inhabited milieu has been dealing with the worrying but bountiful relationship with the strange exterior forces. In order to report on this metamorphosis, we have tried to define the profound originality of architectural invention as "the building line". Its rhythmic movement is neither that of discovery, nor that of creation, but rather proceeds by opening or establishing a livable environment. This definition then allows some of the great texts from the history of architecture (Vitruvius, Alberti, Ledoux, Le Corbusier) to be analyzed in a new way. Questions arise from the hypothesis of progressive disappearance of the exterior from the human empire. The analysis shows how the building line continues in parallel to the progressive loss of the exterior, bending until it turns back on itself, leading to a critical situation (the “bouclage”). The last part of the thesis investigates the contemporary age in more detail and aims to identify the emergent perspectives trying to escape from this situation. The answer is based on the regenerative power of architecture through interlinking (“reliance”), and it leads on develop the concept of “transmilieu(x)”. The concept travels beyond the frontiers between scales, disciplines, nature and culture, and could be the starting point of another way of thinking in architecture

Full textJohn Chrysostom's Homilies on Genesis are a commentary, in the shape of homilies, on the book of Genesis. This thesis offers a translation of the homilies I to X, which deal with the first account of creation (Gn 1 1—2 3). The translation is supplied with an annotation which enlightens it in the fields of exegesis — through the comparison between the Chrysostomian commentary and the rest of exegetical tradition —, spirituality, realia, and Chrysostomian parallels as well as with indexes (biblical, proper names, Greek words). It is preceded by an introduction in three chapters. The first one presents these homilies and discusses the question of their date, finally fixed in 388. The second one, dealing with Chrysostomian exegesis, analyses first its literalism (characteristic of the Antiochene tradition), whose foundations, principles and method are explained, and the use of the concept of divine condescension, which counterbalances the literalism ; then presents the conclusions following from this exegesis as far as doctrine and spirituality are concerned. A third chapter, dedicated to pastoral, analyses first the ways of persuading : the pastor's condescension, which finds expression in exploiting the congregation's human motivations and referring to everyday life realities, in his rhetorical involvement and in his paying attention to the receipt of the speech ; then the message served by this pastoral. This message consists both in a defense of orthodoxy and in a vigourous exhortation to put Christian faith into practise, especially by exercising charity. The thesis concludes on the paradoxes of Chrysostomian realism

Full textThe aim of this thesis is manifold ; firstly showing the quality of Shaw local pseudo-potential to describe the structure of polyvalents metals and his transferability to alloys. Secondly doing the experimental study by neutron scattering of structure of the hetero-coordinated Mn-Zn liquid alloy, and highlighting the critical phenomenon of demixing for Bi-Ga liquid alloy with experimental tools (X-rays and neutrons) and structural simulation Reverse Monte-Carlo (RMC). This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, we develop the pseudo-potentials theory necessary to obtain the inter-ionic potential for both pure metals and alloys, we define the structural quantities which are the pair correlation functions and the structure factors, we present the molecular dynamics method. Then we will present and discuss our results obtained using the effective potential and molecular dynamics. These results concern the calculation of structural quantities of pure polyvalent metals (Al, Ga, Cd, In, Sn, Tl, Pb, Bi),and their alloys whose experimental data are avaible (Bi-Pb, Pb-Sn et Ga-Pb). We particulary discuss the transferability of the Shaw local pseudo-potential from pure liquid to liquid alloy. In the second part, we detail the process of diffusion of the two experimental methods most used for determining the structure of liquid metals and their alloys, which are the neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction. We explain the standard and magnetic methods of correction used for the Mn-Zn liquid alloy. We will also present the RMC structural simulation that will be used to highlight the local order in the Bi-Ga liquid alloy structure witch present a threshold of miscibility

Full textBook X of the "Roman Antiquities" of Dionysius of Halicarnassus relates the plebeian fight for a motion of law on the publication of a statute law in Rome, resulting in the institution of the Decemvirate and the publication of the XII Tables in the years 461 to 450 B. C. The introduction analyses the episodes of the book and insists on the moral and political thought of Dionysius of Halicarnassus in his interpretatio graeca of the codification of laws. The principles of edition result from the collation of the ten manuscripts of the direct tradition and of three manuscripts of excerpta. The text was established according to three old manuscripts, including Vaticanus gr. 1300, unknown from C. Jacoby, author of the latest edition of the text (Teubner, 1891). The translation in French is the first one since that proposed by F. Bellanger in 1723. The linear commentary of the text includes historical, lexical and philological notes
Tönies, Simon. "Au fond de l'inconnu : Technique et esthétique dans "Polyphonie X" de Pierre Boulez." Thesis, Université Côte d'Azur, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021COAZ2000.
Full textWritten in 1951, "Polyphonie X" is a key work of early serialism and a corner stone of the most experimental stage in Pierre Boulez’s career. However, the fact that the piece has been withdrawn shortly after its premiere has inhibited the very possibility of an adequate reception or understanding. The present study aims to fill this gap by providing an in-depth analysis of the underlying compositional procedures as well as an aesthetic discussion. In addition to the three completed movements of "Polyphonie X", its larger scoped but only rudimentarily mapped-out predecessor Première Polyphonie is also taken into consideration. After a brief overview of the historical context and a discussion of Boulez’s concept of polyphony, the analysis proceeds in two steps: Firstly, the intricate background structure is reconstructed from the sketch material, paying particular attention to the relationship between the different compositional dimensions such as pitch, rhythm or timbre. Secondly, it is examined how the composer works with this background structure in order to, for example, accentuate certain perceptive potentials. To this end, I propose a methodology of harmonic analysis that also incorporates the findings of empirical, perception-centered research. The results of the analysis are then taken as a starting point for an aesthetic critique. It is argued that Boulez’s rejection of "Polyphonie X" is the result of an unsolved crisis of creative agency in relation to an increasingly alienated, self-perpetuating musical material. Moreover, it is opined that it is precisely this conflict that makes for the transformative relevancy of the piece. Finally, in light of these considerations, I make some suggestions as to how the piece can be approached today
Romanini, Emanuele. "L’esegesi di Francesco Piendibeni al ‘Bucolicum carmen’ del Petrarca (ms. Vat. Pal. lat. 1729) : Edizione critica e commento : Egloghe I-IX e XI-XII (con una trascrizione dei ‘marginalia’ all’egloga X)." Thesis, Paris 4, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA040036.
Full textThis doctoral thesis presents, almost in its entirety, the critical edition with commentary of the exegesis of Petrarch’s Bucolicum carmen by Francesco Piendibeni of Montepulciano, an Italian humanist of the late Trecento. The exegesis, completed in Perugia in 1394, is preserved in the autograph manuscript Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Pal. lat. 1729. The work as a whole has remained unpublished until today; only Antonio Avena, in 1906, provided a simpletranscription, partial and imperfect, of some glosses. The edition contained in this thesis aims at being innovative; in effect, it not only establishes and critically analyses a text which has remained unknown for a long time, but also makes it possible to delve deeper into the knowledge of Petrarch’s bucolic poem, to better assess how it was received by the scholars who came after him and to shed light on the exegetical tradition of early Humanism. A fundamental source for Piendibeni was Benvenuto da Imola’s commentary on the Bucolicum carmen; an unpublished transcription is provided here, based on the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, lat. 8700. Finally, the list of known manuscripts belonging to Piendibeni has been updated, so that, for the first time, his library has been exhaustively reconstructed
Manucci, Carole. "I Ragionamenti de Giorgio Vasari ou l’édifice de la Mémoire." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014AIXM3110.
Full textGiorgio Vasari was born on 30 July 1511 ; he died on 27 June 1574. At the end of 1554, he starts to be on the service of Cosimo I de' Medici, the Duke of Florence and he quickly sees himself entrusted with the transformation works of the seigneurial palace into a ducal one. The artist delivers the reading guides of the pictorial cycle deployed on the ceilings and the walls of the famous Florentine monument known as Palazzo Vecchio, in Ragionamenti del Sig. Cavaliere Giorgio Vasari, pittore e architetto aretino, sopra le invenzioni da lui dipinte in Firenze nel Palazzo di loro Altezze Serenissime, a little-known and little-studied work. Written between 1558 and 1567, but only posthumous published in 1588, this text stages Giorgio Vasari and Prince Francesco I de' Medici, the elder son of Cosimo I and Eleonora di Toledo. Under a descriptive hand, in which the word and the image unite, the artist composes a dialogue spread over three days and lead in three emblematic places of the palace: the Elements Area, the Leo X Quarter and the Cinquecento Room. The interest of this work lies in the different reading levels as in the different "dialogues" that it means to suggest. If the rewriting of some mythological episodes, directly viewed in relation to the history of the Medici dysnasty, contributes to the official aim of the work - namely the ducal glorification - the myth preludes, owing to its belonging to an esoteric world, a hidden reading of the Vasarian text that, beyond serving the Medici reign, reveals a memory aura inviting us to comprehend Giorgio Vasari's Ragionamenti as an edifice of Memory
