Resumen
Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurement of 25 single-year tree rings from AD 1861–1885 at ca. ±3.5‰ precision shows no evidence of an anomalous 11-yr cycle of 14C near the Arctic Circle in the Mackenzie River area. However, the Δ14C measurements are lower on average by 2.7 ± 0.9 (ō)‰ relative to 14C measurements on tree rings from the Pacific Northwest (Stuiver and Braziunas 1993). We attribute this depression of Δ14C to thawing of the ice and snow cover followed by melting of frozen earth that releases trapped 14C-depleted CO2 to the atmosphere during the short growing season from May through August. Correlation of Δ14C with May–August estimated temperatures yields a correlation index of r = 0.60. The reduction in Δ14C is dominated by seven years of anomalous depletion. These years are 1861, 1867–1869, 1879–1880 and 1883. The years 1867–1869 are coincident with a very strong ENSO event.

Resumen
Between 1867 and 1869 Michel Chasles presented a series of manuscripts to the Académie des sciences, which suggested that Isaac Newton's claims to original discovery were unfounded. It quickly became apparent to the majority of the academicians that the manuscripts were forgeries, but Chasles was repeatedly allowed to state his case. This essay focuses on the responses to the affair from four British men of science: David Brewster, Augustus De Morgan, Robert Grant and Thomas Archer Hirst. It asks why they felt it necessary to add their voices to this debate and examines their various strategies for refuting Chasles's evidence.

Resumen
Abstract This paper explores the numismatic collecting activities of the oil magnate and financier Calouste Gulbenkian (1869–1955), focusing in particular on his relationships with scholars who advised him, such as George Hill (1867–1948) and Stanley Robinson (1887–1976), as well as with dealers like Jacob Hirsch (1874–1955), from whom many of his purchases were sourced. The ways in which these relationships shaped his collections will be stressed, as will the similarities between Gulbenkian’s numismatic collection practices and his manner of collecting other art objects.

Resumen
Abstract:Two Armenian ecclesiastics from Jerusalem, Isaac and Dimothéos, visited Abyssinia in 1867–1869. The latter’s detailed account of their journey was promptly published, grandiloquently dedicated (with formal permission) to Queen Victoria. The journey has nonetheless received little attention from historians, and the reasons it was made have been poorly understood. An intention to seek release of Europeans imprisoned by King Tewodros (Theodore) of Ethiopia was overtaken by events, the captives’ release being achieved by an expedition from British India before the Armenians arrived. Emphasis was consequently placed on involvement with local politics and ecclesiastical intrigue, both of which are discussed in this paper.

AbstractThis article explores a slice of the careers of two ‘rival’ coloratura singers – the Swedish soprano Christine Nilsson and the French soprano Caroline Miolan Carvalho – during the period 1867 to 1870, and considers the internationalisation of singing careers, women's choices and negotiation of their career paths, and fortunes made and lost. With both singers employed at the Paris Opéra from November 1868 onwards as Gounod's Faust went into rehearsal, the focus falls on the ‘Battle of the Marguerites’ in the Parisian press in spring 1869, which raised heated questions of dramatic and vocal interpretation and style, often linked to cultural stereotypes, as well as artistic legitimacy and stature. Through examination of previously overlooked archival financial and legal records, this article also reveals for the first time that Miolan Carvalho was indentured to the director of the Opéra Emile Perrin during this period.

Resumen
Telemiades Hübner, [1819] is currently comprised of 22 species and 14 subspecies distributed exclusively in the neotropics. The genus is defined by the morphological pattern of the uncus, apiculus, labial palpi and venation. However, some species have a uniform pattern of coloration making it difficult to establish their correct identity in some cases. The aims of the present study were to present a taxonomic revision of Telemiades Hübner, [1819] in order to provide a stable taxonomic hypothesis for the group, to describe the new species and to present diagnoses to help in species identification. According to the present study, Telemiades is now composed of 41 species. Fourteen new species are recognized and described. Three subspecies are here treated as valid species: T. marpesus (Hewitson, 1876) stat. rest., T. misitheus Mabille, 1888 stat. rest. and T. pekahia (Hewitson, 1868) stat. rest. Two synonyms are treated as valid species: T. insulsus (Draudt, 1922), stat. rev. and T. xantho Hayward, 1939 stat. rev. Five new synonyms are proposed: Plesioneura lamus Mabille, 1888 syn. nov. and Telemiades antiope tosca Evans, 1953 syn. nov. of T. antiope (Plötz, 1882), Echelatus punctatus Mabille & Boullet, 1917 syn. nov. of T. epicalus Hübner, [1819], Proteides nicola Plötz, 1882 syn. nov. of T. laogonus (Hewitson, 1876) and Eudamus phlius Plötz, 1881 syn. nov. of T. nicomedes (Möschler, 1879). To provide stability for existing names, six neotypes were designated for: Proteides amphion Geyer, 1832, Plesioneura compressa Möschler, 1877, Papilio avitus Stoll, 1781, Telegonus mygdon Möschler, 1877, Proteides aesopus Plötz, 1882 and Papilio corbulo Stoll, 1781; and 19 lectotypes for: Aethilla buffumi Weeks, 1906, Eudamus marpesus Hewitson, 1876, Telemiades misitheus Mabille, 1888, Pterygospidea pekahia Hewitson, 1868, Telemiades lurideolus Mabille, 1877, Eudamus laogonus Hewitson, 1876, Eudamus penidas Hewitson, 1867, Telemiades ceramina Herrich–Schäffer, 1869, Telemiades megalloides Schaus, 1902, Pythonides hoyti Weeks, 1906, Eudamus praestes Hewitson, 1876, Telemiades epicalus Hübner, [1819], Eudamus phasias Hewitson, 1867, Telemiades arcturus Herrich–Schäffer, 1869, Echelatus punctatus Mabille & Boullet, 1917, Eudamus centrites Hewitson, 1870, Telegonus gallius Mabille, 1888, Telegonus nicomedes Möschler, 1879, and Arteurotia meris Plötz, 1886.

AbstractDuring the years that led to the Hungarian Jewish schism of 1869, Orthodoxy reigned relatively unchallenged in communities of long standing or East European immigration, while Neology spread in the recently founded urban synagogues. Only the steadily growing community of Pest, Hungary’s economic capital, presented an appropriate testing-ground for religious forces that tried to withstand the progressive cleavage. My paper will focus on the exceptional moment after 1859, when Chief Rabbi Wolf Meisel (1815-1867), a Bohemian compatriot of Zacharias Frankel, formulated in his short-lived journal Der Carmel a popular midstream ideology that was largely independent from the Breslau-style „Science of Judaism.” Jointly attacked by the Orthodox party as well as by Leopold Löw’s progressive journal Ben-Chananja, Meisel’s religious position was undermined by the rise of Hungarian nationalism and the more successfully mediatized Magyarization efforts of the Neologs. My paper will ask for the ideological and social characteristics of Rabbi Meisel’s failed peace movement, the controversy it aroused, and its long-term repercussions on Hungarian Jewish modernism.

Resumen
Charles Tringham, William Chatfield and Christian Julius Toxward are all alleged to have started practices in Wellington in the mid-1860s. Numerous tenders for building work by Tringham and Toxward can be found in newspapers at the time, but tenders by Chatfield do not appear until 1875. There also appears to have been little other competition at the time. Tringham came to New Zealand from England as a carpenter, progressed to being a builder, and was calling himself an architect by 1867. From then until the end of 1869 he tendered in Wellington newspapers for at least 48 buildings. Toxward, a Dane, spent several years as a draftsman in Victoria, Australia, then traveled extensively in Europe. He came to New Zealand by 1862, working in Dunedin and Invercargill before establishing a private practice in Wellington in 1866. By the end of 1869 his tender notices in Wellington newspapers totaled 25. Tringham and Toxward appear to have had quite different approaches in establishing their Wellington practices. Tringham, the younger man at 26, concentrated on designing houses and shops combined with dwellings; he only tendered for four non-residential buildings in the 1860s. Toxward, aged 35 and a prominent Mason, seems to have concentrated on contracts for more substantial buildings such as schools, churches, stores such as Kirkcaldie & Stains and works for the Provincial Government. He only appears to have designed three houses during this period. Chatfield arrived in 1867 and his obituary claims that he ran a practice from then until 1872 when he joined the Wellington Provincial Government as a draftsman. The lack of tenders in the papers suggests either he had limited success or his work was organised through other means, such as word of mouth. Once his architectural practice was established, his early career (40 buildings in four years) closely paralleled that of Tringham. All three, with the later addition of Thomas Turnbull, dominated the Wellington architectural scene through to the early 1890s. To place their output in context we discuss other architects who appear in Wellington in the late 1860s, and the building profession during this time.

Resumen
In a short period of the late 1860s, three significant new institutions were founded in Valjevo: the hospital (1867), the grammar school (1869) and the pharmacy (1870). In the early stages of development of all three institutions, a big role was played by immigrants from Slavonia: medical doctor Jovan Sieber, pharmacist Klaudije Prikelmajer, and professor Djuro Kozarac. This paper aims to clarify the connections between these individuals that caused their relocation from the territories of the Habsburg Monarchy to Serbia and Valjevo, as well as to resolve the confusion caused by imprecise family memories and written chronicles that have been collected. Moreover, this paper additionally focuses on the origins of the Sieber family, which included Jovan Sieber, and the later arrival of other members of the family to Valjevo. Another member of the family was Jovan?s nephew Dr. Stevan Sieber, father of Dr. Djordje Sieber, who went on to become a general in the Medical Corps of the Royal Yugoslav Army.

Resumen
Family-group names proposed for beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae are catalogued and their availability is determined using the rules of the current International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. A synoptic classification of the family summarizes the validity of the names. Type genera of all family-group names are listed and the type species and stems of genera of available family-group names are included. A new family-group name, Elytracanthinini Bousquet (type genus: Elytracanthina Monn, 2005, a replacement name for Elytracantha Lane, 1955) is proposed for Elytracanthinae Lane, 1955. Ichthyosoma armatum Montrouzier, 1855 is designated as type species of Icthyosoma Boisduval, 1835. Reversal of precedence is used to preserve the validity of the following family-group names: Anaglyptides Lacordaire, 1868 (over Anaglyptisidae Gistel, 1848 [Buprestidae]); Dryobiini Arnett, 1962 (over Dryobiadae Gistel, 1856 [Ptinidae]); Hemilophitae Thomson, 1868 (over Amphionychitae Thomson, 1860) and Hétéropsides Lacordaire, 1869 (over Dichophyiaeidae Gistel, 1848). The following family-group names, although junior synonyms, are preserved as valid until an application is submitted to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature; in these cases a reversal of precedence could not be applied: Eurypodini Gahan, 1906 (over Zaracinae Pascoe, 1869); Macronides Lacordaire, 1868 (over Enchapteritae Thomson, 1861); Pyresthides Lacordaire, 1868 (over Pseudolepturitae Thomson, 1861 and Erythrinae Pascoe, 1866) and Stenoderinae Pascoe, 1867 (over Syllitae Thomson, 1864). A total of 238 valid cerambycid family-group names (413 available names) are recognized in the following 13 subfamilies: Vesperinae (1 valid family-group name), Oxypeltinae (1), Disteniinae (4), Anoplodermatinae (3), Philinae (1), Parandrinae (2), Prioninae (24), Spondylidinae (5), Necydalinae (1), Lepturinae (8), Lamiinae (80), Dorcasominae (1), and Cerambycinae (107).

Resumen
Proboszcz z Ełdyt Wielkich ks. Heinrich Renkel (Renze) zakupił 5 kwietnia 1852 r. wolnostojący dom w Miłakowie, aby zaadaptować go na cele kultu religijnego. Augustin Bargel. Jego następcą ustanowiono w 1865 r. ks. Antona Gerigka, który energicznie przystąpił do realizacji inwestycji budowlanej. Kamień węgielny pod nową świątynię położono w 1867 r. Ostatecznie wybudowano kościół salowy w stylu neogotyckim. Uroczystość jego konsekracji ku czci Znalezienia i Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego, której przewodniczył biskup Filip Krementz, miała miejsce 4 lipca 1869 r. W 1859 r. erygowano w Miłakowie szkołę katolicką. W czasie kulturkampfu wakował urząd proboszcza w tym mieście. W 1879 r. na obszarze parafii mieszkało 1014 katolików, zaś w 1895 r. – 950. Budowę obiektów kościelnych oraz pensję duszpasterzy i pracowników kościelnych dotowały stowarzyszenia i organizacje katolickie, zwłaszcza Towarzystwo św. Franciszka Ksawerego i Stowarzyszenie św. Bonifacego i Wojciecha we Fromborku.

Resumen
The taxonomy of flabelligerid polychaetes has been difficult because of three main problems: 1) the eversible anterior end is rarely exposed and its appendices are poorly known, 2) there is no standard terminology for chaetae, and 3) most generic definitions have been unstable or improperly defined. A redefinition and revision of all species in Piromis Kinberg, 1867 and Pycnoderma Grube, 1877 is herein presented. Piromis, Pycnoderma, and Trophoniella Caullery, 1944 share a thick tunic and a projected, tongue-shaped branchial plate. Their main difference is the type of neurochaetae in median and posterior chaetigers; thus, Piromis has multiarticulate, often bidentate neurochaetae, whereas Pycnoderma has oligoarticulate, often mucronate neurochaetae, while Trophoniella has anchylosed neurochaetae. This latter genus is being revised elsewhere. The species in Piromis or Trophoniella are separated depending on the extent and type of sediment cover, together with the presence of notopodial or dorsal lobes, the relative length of chaetal articles, especially in neurochaetae, and the relative abundance of body papillae or cephalic cage chaetae. As herein defined, Piromis includes 12 species with five being newly described, while Pycnoderma includes eight species with three being newly described. The species in Piromis are P. arenosus Kinberg, 1867 (type species), P. amoureuxi n. sp. from the Lesser Antilles, P. brisegnoi n. sp. from the Gulf of California, P. capulata (Moore, 1909) n. comb., P. eruca (Claparède, 1869), P. fauchaldi n. sp. from the Gulf of California, P. kisemboanus (Augener, 1918) n. comb., P. robertsi (Hartman, 1951), P. suni n. sp. from the South China Sea, P. vossae n. sp. from the Strait of Florida, P. websteri Day, 1973 n. status, and P. wehei n. sp. from the Indian Ocean. On the other hand, the species in Pycnoderma are P. congoense Grube, 1877 (type species), P. dannyi n. sp. from tropical Western Africa, P. escobarae n. sp. from the Gulf of Mexico, P. ferruginea (Gallardo, 1968) n. comb., P. glabra (Treadwell, 1901) n. comb., P. glasbyi n. sp. from Northeastern Australia, P. gracilis (Hartman, 1961) n. comb., and P. talehsapensis (Fauvel, 1932) n. comb. Another species, P. fernandense Augener, 1918, described from two localities from Ghana and Equatorial Guinea, is transferred to Trophoniella Caullery, 1944, by having anchylosed neurospines in posterior chaetigers. All Piromis and Pycnoderma species thrive in sediments, sometimes in mixed environments, in tropical to temperate regions. Piromis includes mostly shallow water species while Pycnoderma includes species living in greater depths.

Resumen
Thomas Hincks was born 15 July 1818 in Exeter, England. He attended Manchester New College, York, from 1833 to 1839, and received a B.A. from the University of London in 1840. In 1839 he commenced a 30-year career as a cleric, and served with distinction at Unitarian chapels in Ireland and England. Meanwhile, he enthusiastically pursued interests in natural history. A breakdown in his health and permanent voice impairment during 1867–68 while at Mill Hill Chapel, Leeds, forced him reluctantly to resign from active ministry in 1869. He moved to Taunton and later to Clifton, and devoted much of the rest of his life to natural history. Hincks was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1872 for noteworthy contributions to natural history. Foremost among his publications in science were A history of the British hydroid zoophytes (1868) and A history of the British marine Polyzoa (1880). Hincks named 24 families, 52 genera and 360 species and subspecies of invertebrates, mostly Bryozoa and Hydrozoa. Hincks died 25 January 1899 in Clifton, and was buried in Leeds. His important bryozoan and hydroid collections are in the Natural History Museum, London. At least six genera and 13 species of invertebrates are named in his honour.

The Transandean-Andean genus Johnsonita Salazar & Constantino, 1995 is revised on the basis of wing and genitalia morphology. Apart from eight species formerly placed in Johnsonita (Thecla assula Draudt, 1919; Thecla auda Hewitson, 1867; Thecla catadupa Hewitson, 1869; Thecla chaluma Schaus, 1902, Thecla chlamydem Druce, 1907; Thecla pardoa d’Abrera, 1995; Johnsonita johnsoni Salazar & Constantino, 1995 and Johnsonita johnbanksi Bálint, 2003), seven new species are described: Johnsonita carpia Bálint, Boyer & Pyrcz, sp. n. (Ecuador), Johnsonita iacinta Bálint, Boyer & Pyrcz, sp. n. (Peru), Johnsonita ianusca Bálint, Lorenc–Brudecka & Pyrcz, sp. n. (Ecuador), Johnsonita oxalida Bálint, Boyer & Pyrcz, sp. n. (Peru), Johnsonita subcunicula Bálint, Cerdeña & Pyrcz, sp. n. (Peru), Johnsonita turquisca Bálint, Boyer & Pyrcz, sp. n. (Ecuador) and Johnsonita zubkova Bálint, Boyer & Lorenc–Brudecka, sp. n. (Peru). One species, erroneously recorded from Bolivia under the name Thecla chaluma Schaus, 1902, is not formally described due to insufficient material. An identification key, type material revision, descriptions or redescriptions, and diagnosis for all the taxa recognized are given. Lectotypes for the nominal species Thecla assula Draudt, 1919 and Thecla chlamydem Druce, 1907 are designated. Male secondary wing characters are tabulated. A brief discussion on classification, life-history and male secondary characters of Johnsonita is presented.

Resumen
Anomalous refraction remains to be the most critical problem in the meridian astrometry measuring large angles on the sky. I study slow quasi-periodical variations of refraction caused by the processes in the middle and upper atmosphere, such as gravity waves, etc., which can not be detected and calibrated out by use of any on-ground meteorological measurements. For this study, very old observations at large zenith distances of 80 to 90 degrees made by V. Fuss at Pulkovo Observatory in 1867-1869 [1] were used. The Deeming's method [2] of spectral analysis of data was applied to examine the characteristic variations of refraction in a wide range of periods. Very powerful quasi-periodical processes with periods of 7-8, 11-14, 18-22, 36-44 minutes and with amplitudes of 0.3 to 0.5 arcsec in the zenith were found when short sets of observations (1-5 days) were considered. They increase random errors of astrometric observations with meridian circles, transit instruments, astrolabes, etc. The periods of very slow variations — 152, 122, 93, 82.5, 73, 61 and 50 days, – are close to the well known periods discovered in other astronomical phenomena, for instance, in solar activity and in Earth rotation. I note also, that some of the long-period variations of refraction may cause quasi-systematic errors in astrometric measurements and catalogues.

Resumen
The study gives a new outlook on the activities of the first Tyumen printing house, which was founded by K. N. Vysotsky in 1869 and existed until 1909. The scientific novelty of the research is due to the following: 1) book publishing is considered as part of the media revolution carried out by K. N. Vysotsky thanks to the opening of the first photography studio (1866), lithography studio (1867), printing house (1869), and a newspaper publishing news and advertisements (1879) in a provincial Siberian town; 2) publishing activities of K. N. Vysotsky and L. K. Vysotskaya are linked with the history of Siberian steam navigation in the 1870–1890s. The purpose of the article is to characterize Russian dorozhniki - itinerary books as a special type of publications in the Vysotskys’ printing house, to identify their diversity and role in the activities of steamship companies, in particular the Kurbatov and Ignatov Partnership. A bibliological analysis based on the structural-typological method within the context and system approaches allows a new interpretation of the role and place of the Vysotskys’ printing house in the history of Siberian book culture. The author comes to the conclusions that about 20% of the repertoire (11 of 56 books) of the Vysotskys’ printing house are books about steamboats and rivers. They represent a semantic unity, a unique series structured by space (more than 3000 km along West Siberian rivers from Tyumen to Tomsk) and the idea of industrialization and cultural development of new lands. The structural dominance of the series belongs to a special publication type: dorozhnik (an itinerary book), the purpose of which was to indicate the distance between settlements and to serve as a travel guide on Siberian rivers. Publication of such books, which are known to exist since the ancient Rome, testifies to the high print culture of the Vysotskys publishers. These books are very diverse: brief guidebooks coexisted with lithographic cartographic editions and advertising catalogs in the genre of history writing and ethnographic travel essays. The significance of the itinerary books published by the Vysotskys lies in the cultural brand they formed for Tyumen as a town and the birthplace of all navigation along West Siberian rivers.

Resumen
With emancipation a fait accompli by 1865, one might ask why Kentucky-born Thomas Satterwhite Noble (1835–1907), former Confederate soldier, son of a border state slaveholder, began painting slaves then. Noble had known the “peculiar institution” at first hand, albeit from a privileged position within the master class. As a result, his choice to embark upon a career as a painter using historical incidents from slavery makes for an interesting study. Were the paintings a way of atoning for his Confederate culpability, a rebel pounding his sword into a paintbrush to appease the conquering North? Or was he capitalizing on his unique geographic perspective as a scion of slave-trafficking Frankfort, Kentucky, soon to head a prestigious art school in Cincinnati, the city where so many runaways first tasted freedom? Between 1865 and 1869 Noble exhibited in northern cities a total of eight paintings with African American subjects. Two of these, The Last Sale of Slaves in St. Louis (1865, repainted ca. 1870) and Margaret Garner (1867), featured mixed-race women, or mulattos, as they had come to be called. From a young female up for auction, to the famous fugitive Margaret Garner, his portrayals show a transformation taking place within perceptions of biracial women in post-emancipation America. Opinions about mulattos surfaced in a range of theoretical discussions, from the scientific to the political, as strategists North and South envisioned evolving social policy.

Resumen
Although ergot had been used in obstetrics for several centuries, it was proposed for the treatment of migraine only in the 19th century. The British ENT-surgeon Edward Woakes (1837-1912) recommended ergot as a vasoconstricting agent for migraine and other neurogenic conditions associated with vasodilatation in 1868. He subscribed to the theory of vasodilatation by sympathetic deficit, presented in the early 1850s by Brown-Séquard and Claude Bernard. Du Bois-Reymond proposed vasoconstriction by sympathetic overactivity as the cause of migraine in 1860; Brown-Séquard opposed this in favour of vasodilatation. Vasodilatation due to sympathetic deficit in migraine was again supported by Möllendorf, with clinical evidence, in 1867. Woakes' paper of 1868 introduced ergot as a vasoconstrictor for the same condition. Reception abroad was prompt. A German version appeared in 1869, and Eulenburg cited Woakes in his textbook of 1871. Eulenburg presented the use of ergot for migraine as a routine measure in the second edition of his textbook in 1878, and in a paper published in 1883. The method was internationally accepted, but it became really popular only after the isolation of pure ergotamine in 1918, resulting in the first reliable compounds with stable properties and predictable effects. Contrary to Woakes' theory, in the early 20th century ergot was used for migraine because of its well-documented adrenolytic properties, as migraine was by then again believed to be a sympathotonic and vasospastic condition.

“From the Heats by Nile to the Fire of Revolution by Vistula”. Izydor Kajetan Wysłouch (1869–1973) and His Social Activity The paper reminds the profile of a respected religious reformer and social activist whose life was also connected to Egypt. From 1902 to 1904, due to ill-health, he visited Egypt twice as he required climatotherapy. At that time he stayed in Helwan, a popular resort near Cairo. During his treatment, he was probably residing in Wanda Bilińska’s guesthouse, where residents from the territories of former-day Poland met. The stay in Egypt made a huge impression on Wysłouch. An ample evidence of his fascination with heritage and monuments of ancient Egypt is the neatly published volume, issued soon after the author’s return to Poland, titled From the Land of Ruins (Warsaw 1906); what is also interesting is its graphic design, using Egyptian motives, created by Franciszek Siedlecki (1867–1934). The volume, containing the author’s reflections on existence and prose poetry, signals the state of his soul, which was filled with loneliness and bitter sadness. Its content also suggests that the author had visited most of the country, from the Giza Pyramid Complex to the city of Aswan. Egypt influenced him to such a great degree that he called the country his second homeland. He also took his pen-name “Szech” (ar. Sheikh) at that time. Having returned to his motherland, Wysłouch became a keen supporter of working-class protests (1905). He also strongly backed the reforms in the Ethical and Social Teachings of the Church; he published numerous brochures in which he described an utopian programme that would connect Christianity with Communism and Polish patriotism; he decided to leave Church in 1908. After Poland regained its independence in 1918, Wysłouch, as a public servant, played a vital role in organising and introducing the system of public disability pensions and retirement insurance in the reborn Poland.
