Texto completoFrom 1910 to 1970, school grammar books repeat the old division between prescriptive grammar and figurative grammar whereas theoretical syntax is gaining grown. Neither the development of sentence analysis nor the transition from the clause sentence pair to simple sentence complex sentence pair enable school grammar to progress in the way of didactic transposition of the works on theoretical syntax. The only advancement is the importation of the notion of recursivity operated through the question about the noun group. We shall have to wait till the seventies with what is called la grammaire d'operations in French (mainly the addition, the subtraction, the shifting and replacing of the constituent) to notice an important progress. The most important transformation sees what Galichet calls affective grammar or psychological grammar through style changing into stylistic superimposing itself on the remains of logical grammar. This development of the figurative part of grammar allows the rebirth of the grammar rhetoric pair which has become the grammar stylistic pair. Thus the mental character of school grammar is being reinforced with its metalanguage putting on the same level different criteria: on one hand formal and functional criteria and, on the other hand, notional criteria which are at the same time logical and psychological. As a conclusion, school grammar is still tied up to the mechanic of analysis and works as a subject we learn. To make up for this weakness, it is going to develop psychological and affective elements used to paraphrase literary texts in reading. It is still tied up to the link between thought and language before progressing later in the direction of productive language precisely where sentence analysis failed. The word traditional grammar deserved to be explained by these two essential components: logical grammar and psychological grammar

This dissertation intends to study the Christian Harp, one of the main national protestant hymnals, looking to identify it as instrument of expansion in Brazil s Pentecostalism mission in the period between 1910 and 1970, while appreciating the history and the creation of this liturgical book, intending to comprehend its usage as motivational element in the missionary practice of the Brazilian Pentecostal churches. It also consists of knowing the characteristics of construction of this compendium, passing through the presentation of its hymnists profiles and through the assiduous study of its musical structure and literary composition, while being aware of some important constitutive characteristics that are used, such as the theological concepts. Looking for a missiology concept that shows to be more correlated with the theological content of this hymnal and the referral of various examples of incitement to the evangelist practice found within its songs, which leads to the comprehension of the relevancy of the Christian Harp in the liturgical life of confessional pentecostal churches in Brazil, and its bold presence as an efficient developer of missionary practice of these faith communities.

Texto completoGaston Defferre will have been a Secretary of overseas France in 1956/1957 under the IVth Republic and a Secretary of inside and the decentralization of 1981 in 1984 under the Vth Republic. If the events of the Algerian War - departments which did not raise his ministerial competence - "swept" the constitutional regime of the IVth Republic, outline law will stay as a short-lived initiative, except in the other territories of overseas France which will not reach the independence in the 1960s. Twenty five years, Gaston Defferre who had predicted in 1957 that if he returned to the power in the state apparatus, he would decolonize the province with regard to Paris, will be in charge from the implementation of the government of Pierre Mauroy in July, 1981 to lead with the support noticed by Prime Minister, " the big affair of the seven-year term of François Mitterrand ". Centered on the parliamentary debates of two studied periods, the search demonstrates that he is not harmless to see behind these two texts, an ambition continues, a capacity of indisputable anticipation and master's degree of the parliamentary debates. At the hour or the act III of the decentralization appears to sink into meanders and renunciation, the act I of 1982 showed that a statesman could by the strength of his commitments and his personality, to lead to their terms two major legislative reforms in very different contexts, but drawing both from the promotion of the local liberties

Texto completoThe notion of place, as consecrated space, is at the heart of the imaginary representations of three major French-speaking authors of the twentieth century: Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (1878-1947), Jean Giono (1895-1970) and Julien Gracq (1910-2008). While the sublime character of the sacred or "numinous" place appears in their works as an Epiphany, supported by a way of writing which appeals to "polysensoriality", it nevertheless contributes to revealing Otherness. Their writing makes it apparent, that they wonder whether there actually exists a specific shape of space and of the individual, as altered by the traumas of the twentieth century, and whether resilience is possible. Thus each author contributes in his own manner to this attempt at "re-enchantment" of the world. The poetics of the place runs through the works of these writers while transcending the literary genres. Because it is a fundamental value, it is the thread which connects various forms of writing so that it sketches a private geography, that of the imaginary representation, therefore effecting the transition from the genius loci to the genius of writing. However, this sacredness of the place is only possible in so far as the place is conceivable as ontologically independent. Mainly defined by the substance which gives it its shape, it plays with the notion of "artialisation" and thwarts mimesis in order to try to restore a link between man and his capacity to "inhabit" the world. This poetics feeds on an "inverse projection", namely on the feeling of transience which is experienced by the "human plant" as a measure of the "size of man", a scale of values which is required to "make the world sing"

Texto completoThis dissertation intends to study the creative imaginative worlds of five twentieth-century artists linked to the Surrealist movement : Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Gisèle Prassions, Dorothea Tanning and Unica Zürn namely. By focalizing on their double practice, i. E. Their literary and visual art practice, our study aims to define the originality of their “inscapes”. Their works, which are focused on self-representation, question the notions of reflection and identity and the fact of belonging to a particular gender. Deeply influenced by traditional or conventional codes and models, these artists emphasize the difficulties to define one’s position in a world still largely dominated by patriarchal discourses

This work analyses through the journal Portugal Democrático the intellectual and culture repression practiced by the Portuguese authoritarian government. In Portugal, in the 28 th may 1926, has been instaured an authoritarian government, that some years later has become the Estado Novo and has had Antônio de Oliveira Salazar as it´s leader. His repressive politics have lead many of his opponents to leave the country. Between these emigrants many have chosen Brazil as destination. This way one have formed an oppositionist colony that gathered have originated Portugal Democrático, one of the most important oppositionist journals to Salazar´s government in the world. In between the many articles published in the journal the subject of culture and intellectuals have had special attention. Joaquim Barradas de Carvalho, was one of these political immigrants who collaborated with the periodic between from 1964 to 1970. In his block “O Obscurantismo Salazarista” have given special attention to the repression to culture and intellectuality. These articles were what birthed this dissertation, addressing issues such as repression the Portugueses Universities, the pursuit of academics, and the closing of the Portuguese society of writers and some of the intellectuals persecuted by Salazar. Criticizing the authoritarian Portuguese Government attitudes

Texto completoProperly speaking, epics have not been written in France for two centuries, but the genre continues to influence contemporary literature. In particular, the “double image” of the epic as the Romantic thinkers construed it still informs both the reinterpretation of classical epics and the contemporary novel. On the one hand, it legitimizes the present by condemning the epic to the past, but without ceasing to perpetrate it as a universal monument. The works of numerous philologists such as Georges Dumézil or Madeleine Biardeau bear witness to this disparity. For their part, translators of epic literature such as Philippe Jaccottet or Pierre Klossowski criticize in diverse ways the philological paradigm and its paradoxes. On the other hand, the romantics invented an epic register which tries to retain the essence of the epic as a genre, transferring it to the novel. However, the texts of Jean Giono, Julien Gracq and Claude Simon indicate that this “epic style” inherits the difficulties of the epic genre itself when it comes to the modern age, even calling into question the modern understanding of literature. Finally, modern adaptations seem to constitute an alternative to the modern paradigm of the epic. However, in France they are often limited to simple rewriting and thus remain faithful to the idealized conception of the epic as a universal utterance (Jean-Claude Carrière). As far as the genres of fantasy and “space opera” are concerned, their narrative rewriting of “the myth of the death of epic” serves their own aim of self-legitimization; their specificity is therefore constructed in the very terms of modern literature that they re-appropriate and put into question

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to point out typical features of the aesthetics common to surrealism and the renaissance's emblematics. The first part will analyze the similarities between the twentieth century "collages" and the structure of emblem books from sixteenth to seventeenth century: in both cases the quest for a new language may be seen to have links with the replacement of symbolism and theological thought with semiotics and the arbitrariness of the linguistic sing. We will then study how Breton’s, Gracq's and Butor's works coincide with a reappearance of the emblematic mode, in the way that the grounds and purposes of symbolism are displayed yet questioned through writing. The last part deals with the treatment of space, time and myths in these texts; man is shown as an "homo emblematicus" torn between his fascination for symbols and the silence of the signs

Texto completoI began my work on Gaston Defferre for two main biographical reasons : first of all I was unsatisfied by the fact that Gaston Defferre’s political career was often reduced in public discourse to « the Mayor of marseille » – thus ignoring the policy maker, and Member of parliament for over 40 years, in charge of a ministery many times under the 4th and 5th Republics, and major socialist leader - the second element was the paradox of a very long political career that never gave him the occasion to play any major part un French politics. His failure at the 1969 presidential election is to be regarded as an important break in his career, that put a final dot to his national ambitions meanwhile his local leadership was getting to an edge. This dynamic gap between local and national career, comparable to that of many other political french leaders, makes this biographic research relevant - examining firmly the link between both aspects helps understand why this career remained unfulfilled. This work, proceeding through comparisons between local and national public documents, as well as private ones, uncovers four series of questions : the Resistance regarded as a matrix and a structuring experience in Defferre’s career - the local settings that gave him political longevity and a parachute in the event of failure, as well as a real restraint for political decisions - his relation to socialism as an ideology and to the socialist party – to which he always remained faithfull - the statesman, his reforms, his relation to the institutions, and the way he dealt with general interest, his socialist commitment to local interest

Texto completoAt the end of the 1940s, a new theatrical avant-garde appears on the small stages of the Left Bank in Paris: the theatre of the “absurd”, as conceptualised by the British drama critic Martin Esslin. This innovative dramatic writing style succeeds in establishing itself with the French and international public, and enjoys a long-lasting success in West German theatres. This thesis aims at uncovering the process of cultural transfer and the modes of reception in the Federal Republic of Germany through the main representatives of this movement: Arthur Adamov, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet and Eugène Ionesco. Based on previously unpublished archival sources, this work retraces the path of the mediators of this cultural import, follows the chronology of the reception and highlights the diversity of the types of media used: theatre, radio and television. The individual steps through which the theatrical works were circulated in the West German theatre landscape between 1949 and 1989 will be analysed from the discovery by publishing houses via different translations, to major stage productions and finally the acceptance by the theatrical press and the general public. Thanks to its cosmopolitan nature, the theatre of the “absurd” was endowed by the West German host culture with an international dimension that contributed to its successful integration. Hence this study opens a new chapter in the history of Germany, its culture and theatre as well as, more widely, the French-German cultural relations

Texto completoEver since Emerson the United-States have been expecting the great national masterpiece that would not only celebrate the unique destiny of this young democracy but would also free American language and literature from the European model. However, it did not seem that it was for the epic poem to accomplish this task given that it appeared not only ill-suited to describe the modern world but also incompatible with the demands of a poetic modernity predicated on lyrical intensity. Hence, the planned obsolescence of this “form” has made it all the more difficult to explain the spectacular rebirth of the “American long poem” in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has appeared all the more problematic since, after having been associated to Walt Whitman’s democratic lyricism, the “long poem” was appropriated by T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound making it the symbol of the authoritarian, elitist and systematic tendencies of “high modernism”. It will thus come as no surprise that the critical community has tended to view the “long poem” negatively confirming in a way its illegibility: the “long poem” could only be viewed as a short lyric sequence, an impossible masterpiece or a parody of systematic thought and American exceptionalism. In undertaking this study of Louis Zukofsky’s “A”, William Carlos William’s Paterson and Charles Olson’s Maximus Poems I wish to demonstrate that it is possible to read the “long poem” as such without having to resort to generic categories and to the modern/postmodern dichotomy. I also hope to show that, in these three works, poetry is understood as a kind of ongoing activity which modestly attempts to articulate the poem to the world, time and reading

Texto completoWhen André Breton comes back to France in 1946, he's thrilled with theatre plays which manage to renew the dramatic practices of the time. Between 1945 and the late sixties, Ionesco, Schehadé, Gracq, and also Adamov, Arrabal, Audiberti, Limbour, Obaldia, Vian and Weingarten create daring plays which have everything to allure the leader of surrealism.Even if most authors only have a tenuous or even non-existent link with the surrealist movement, they inherit certain notions of first surrealism through playwrights and theatre theorists - such as Artaud and Jarry-, thinkers -philosophers or psychoanalysts- but also stage directors. The twenty plays studied here question human existence by either analyzing the perception of the nonsense of the world and the incapacity to communicate, or the loss of values and reference markers, leading the characters to wonder about their identities, their memories and their desires. Beyond these reflections characteristic of the dramatic production of the post-war period, the playwrights of our corpus explore new dramatic paths. Some propose a linguistic work which aims at finding poetry within daily conversations. Others question what we take for granted through humour and irony. Finally, others turn to the exploration of one’s unconscious, dreams and madness. These three approaches born of individual initiatives of the playwrights get close to a surrealist aesthetics, but they may not by themselves summarize the diversity of dramatic attempts nor define a posteriori a new idea of surrealist theatre

Gantes, Manuel. "Desenho nos séculos XX e XXI:imagem, espaço e tempo". Doctoral thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/8949.
This teoretical and practical thesis is concerned with the transformations wich took place in the field of drawing during the past XX century and the beginning of the current century. Relating to these transformations paradigmatic works of art are studied, starting with bidimensionality towards the conquest of time and space. Important to the renovation of image in drawing, examples of the oeuvre of Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti and Pierre Bonnard are considered. The works of Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Barnett Newman are central to the expansion of the field of drawing away from the figure towards space and time. “Spiral Jetty” and “Roden Crater”, seminal works from Robert Smithson and James Turrell, reveal true space and time as part of the new elements of drawing. Without forgetting the huge diversity of existing drawing practices, the practical side of the thesis insists on the relevance of maintaining a focus on image-making through drawing.
