Though over fifty years of musical and poetic creation, Léo Ferré has gained recognition as a major standard in French songwriting. His popular best-seller songs Paris canaille, Jolie môme, C’est extra or Avec le temps succeded in giving him worldwide renown, though both lyrical and their melodic qualities. Behindhe who wrote over four hundred songs hides yet a true composer of symphonic pieces of great magnitude in many different genres : mass, symphony, ballet, opera, oratorio. . . Furthermore, he put into song poems out of any time period dating as far back as the middle-ages. This doctoral thesis shall study Ferré’s path mainly from a musical perspective. It shall cast light upon the reasons which caused him to work the « savant » genre instead of merely going « légère », and hence to present himself as creator of a new type of French songwriting. Ferré’s works shall this be analysed though their many aspects. The matter of recording technics and proceeds shall also be dealt with, as well as musical consumption and interpretation

From the artistic careers of composers Alberto Ginastera and Camargo Guarnieri, this essay aims to analyze the consequences of nationalism and musical ―avant-garde‖ in Argentina and Brazil from 1930 to 1960. So, we will develop a focus compared between these two countries in a way that these trajectories can be analyzed in line with broader intellectual paradigms – including international ones - that ended up favoring certain aesthetic forms in different periods covered. We believe that the artistic options of Ginastera and Guarnieri are related to the musical past of their respective societies, hence the importance of discussing the Argentine and Brazilian cultural history, as well as the place and the strength that the nationalist movements and ―avantgarde‖ aesthetics forms found there

Poetic modernity is often said to be typified by its inclination towards silence, self-effacement, and fragmentation. Yet some poets belonging with the second half of the XXth century explicitly claim their desire and their right to confront the Great Totality. They do so in works that elaborate various strategies of poetic totalization in keeping with a Romantic tradition : that is particularly the case of André Frénaud, Patrice de La Tour du Pin and Pierre Emmanuel. In spite of their apparent anachronism, their works actually imply a tension that expresses the semantic dualism of the notion of totality, between intension (wholeness) and extension (allness) : does the whole-inclusive and self-contained Book ambition the fusing of multiplicity into a homogeneous whole, or does it open up to every thing without denying the infinite ? The breaking off induced by World War II enhances this problem, questioning the ambition of intensive totality and its inner risk of totalitarianism : that of the final Word which denies the rest of the world. Far from being blind to that risk, the three poets we study exhibit it. The temptation of totality is consequently checked by the irreducible singularity of beings and things. Undergoing a de-totalization caused by the axiological crisis of a compromised enunciatory posture, the works willingly suffer the injury of otherness that fragments them. Poetry is able to play the game of an extensive multiplicity : this capacity being grounded on an ethic of relationships, it thus reinvents its right to develop according to a totalizing dynamics. Therefore, the work exist by virtue of its issuing into the world

Dambacher, Martine Tania.

Marie Susini and Maria Giacobbe, two female writers who were born in two islands of the Mediterranean - Corsica and Sardinia - and belonged to the same generation, have written about their native islands while they were abroad. Through her imagination exacerbated by the distance, each of them has recaptured her native Ithaca. The main object of this research is to study the genesis of their writing, the analysis of forms and themes connected to their constant interior “revisitation”. A comparative approach will further examine the text through the critical standards of Margherita Marras, and comparisons with the texts of other authors, whether they are insular or not. What is basically at stake is the question of identity: what is an insular writer? What does writing about an island consist in?

Booth, Erin A. M. "The Manitoba Provincial Architect's Office (1904-1916)". 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/7364.

Resumen
From the turn of the twentieth century to the onset of the First World War, Manitoba experienced extensive social, demographic, and economic changes. Additionally, the architectural profession in Canada went through a metamorphosis from a haphazard practice to a standardized profession. During this period, the Provincial Architect's Office (PAO) of the Manitoba Department of Public Works initiated and completed numerous new building projects. In the context of rapid changes, the PAO evolved to adjust. The Provincial Architects, Samuel Hooper (1904-11) and Victor Horwood (1911-15), were varyingly successful in fulfilling the demands of the Office and the directions in which the PAO was taken by the Ministers. The major building projects undertaken during Horwood's term vastly altered the role of the Provincial Architect and occasioned the demise of the PAO. Scandals associated with these projects served as a catalyst for the dissolution of the PAO in 1916 as a result of charges of mismanagement. Upon realizing the scope of the mismanagement, the Liberals, led by Tobias C. Norris, used the Office and Provincial Architect, Victor Horwood to disparage the Roblin Conservatives. By reviewing the Department of Public Works annual reports, focusing particularly on those of The Provincial Architect, I examine how the Manitoba Provincial Architect's Office changed and evolved to fit the rapidly changing world around it, as well as the changing directions of the Ministers. I analyze the design styles of the Provincial Architects to determine the messages which were conveyed to the public about the government. I then examine Reports of the various Royal Commissions convened to inquire into the major building projects to determine the roles of the Office, the Provincial Architect, and the Ministers.

Following capitalism's arrival on the Canadian Prairies, the desire to challenge the existing order grew within a number of sharply divided communities. Immediately following World War I, moderates and radicals alike responded to the grim realities of unemployment, starvation wages, poor working conditions, and unsanitary housing by challenging a contradictory system of social relations in a battle over the meaning of "democracy". It was a golden age of social criticism, as pioneer reformers reached out to the large community audiences. In colleges, in churches, and in a radicalized press, the arrival of reform was heralded as the coming of a new day. Few persons were as outspoken or were able to gain as wide an audience as William Ivens. As a Methodist minister, a Labour Church leader, a working-class intellectual, and eventually as a member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, William Ivens challenged the existing order. He represented a tendency in Western Canadian thought throughout the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. His Labour Church as a working-class institution helped forge a political space in the community. Ivens offered Manitobans a new social order based not on competition, but rather on co-operation. His tendency was the result of passing various elements of Marxism, and Labour Marxist thought through the lens of a non-conformist Christianity and Methodism. The end result was an ethical socialist social philosophy that effectively addressed the social problems of the period. As a spokes-person and as an agitator for social reform, Ivens' ethical socialist outlook achieved a consensus among radical and moderate labourists. His importance as an activist in the community and the type of reforms that he was advocating, make him an important, interesting and worthwhile study in Western Canadian history.

Resumen
This chapter traces representations of the status of women in Ireland through three twentieth-century productions based on the Trojan Women of Euripides. As a tragedy about the brutalities of colonialism, the play was immediately topical when it was produced by the Dublin Drama League in 1920, with Maud Gonne in the starring role as Hecuba. The play’s reception, however, underlined women’s lack of political agency, as did Brendan Kennelly’s Trojan Women (1993) and Marina Carr’s Hecuba (2015). Kennelly’s Trojan women are inspired by suffering Irish women from rural villages, but his Hecuba represents female collusion in sexist oppression from which men escape responsibility. Carr’s women are sexually liberated but they remain prisoners. Female sexuality continues to be connected with disempowerment at a moment when the absence of women from the Abbey Theatre’s 1916 commemoration programme was generating significant public criticism.

Resumen
Contemporary geographical research concerning North America’s native peoples is most conspicuous for its remarkably diverse set of subjects, methods, and epistemological stances. Indeed, it would be hard to find another AAG specialty group whose members do research in as many corners of the natural and social sciences and humanities. Some perspectives developed quite recently, while others emanate from a century of prior research by geographers, especially Carl Sauer and his students. We think these observations important enough to require opening our review with a description, albeit a painfully brief one, of the historical context for the current scene. In the early twentieth century, as now, there was a great deal of cross-fertilization between anthropology and geography. Deterministic thinking associated with environmentalist theory (e.g. Hans 1925; Huntington 1919; Semple 1903) elicited many critical responses from both fields. For example, the geographer-turned-anthropologist Franz Boas and his students sought to illuminate the full complexity of Native American life, producing a vast corpus of empirical studies. Many addressed geographical topics, including Native North American place-names, environmental knowledge, and resource use. These works were frequently termed “ethnogeographies” (e.g. Barrett 1908; Boas 1934; Harrington 1916). Others attempted sweeping continental studies of regional variation based on historical and cultural processes (Kroeber 1939; Wissler 1926). The historicist critique of environmentalist theory resonated with a young geographer, Carl Sauer. Sauer (1920) long had interests in American Indian land-use practices, or “land management” in current parlance. Regular interaction with Boas’s students, especially Kroeber and Lowie, coupled with independent development of their own geographical ideas, led Sauer and his students to expand their research on North American Indian cultural geography, including such subjects as settlement patterns (e.g. Sauer and Brand 1930), plant use (e.g. Carter 1945), and resources and material and oral culture (e.g. Kniffen 1939). Sauer, his large number of Ph.D. students, and his student’s students, continued to define this research agenda throughout the twentieth century (e.g. Kniffen et al. 1987; Sauer 1971). The continued relevance of this work was signaled recently by the reissue of two classic texts in new editions (Denevan 1992a; Waterman 1993).
