Resumen

A new millipede species, Ommatoiulus malleatus n. sp. (Diplopoda, Julidae), is described from the Ichkeul National Park, Tunisia. The gonopod structure of the species indicates the punicus-group which includes Ommatoiulus punicus (Brölemann, 1894), Ommatoiulus seurati (Brolemann, 1925), Ommatoiulus aumalensis (Brolemann, 1925), Ommatoiulus atlanteus Schubart, 1960, Ommatoiulus quadridentatus Schubart, 1960 recorded from North Africa and Ommatoiulus brandti (Berlese, 1885) from Sicily. The new species is, however, well differentiated by a particular “hammer-like structure” on the mesomerite process of the posterior gonopod.

Resumen

Hypsipyrgias joseliae sp. n. (Heteroptera: Tingidae: Tinginae) from New Guinea is described, illustrated and compared with its two relatives, namely H. telamonides Kirkaldy, 1908 from Australia, and H. euphues Drake and Ruhoff, 1962 from Lord Howe Island. Key to species of the genus Hypsipyrgias is also provided. Two genera very closely related to Hypsipyrgias Kirkaldy, 1908, namely Hypsotingis Drake, 1960 and Diplocysta Horváth, 1925 are re-diagnosed. Diplocysta globuliformis Hacker, 1928, D. papuana Drake, 1960, D. rustica, Drake, 1960 and D. thaleia Drake and Ruhoff, 1965 are transferred from Diplocysta to Hypsotingis.

Авторы публикации знакомят читателя с воспоминаниями и впечатлениями В.М. Лавровского о посещении им Великобритании в ходе научной командировки 1925 г. (совместно с Е.А. Косминским). Этот документ из личного фонда исследователя в Архиве РАН (АРАН) никогда ранее не публиковался. Во вступительной статье рассматривается краткая научная биография каждого из ученых на фоне зарождения и развития советской исторической науки в 1920-х – 1960-х годах. Особое внимание авторами уделяется вопросам, касающимся способов решения различных исследовательских задач в ходе этих командировок, общения советских и английских историков на международных конференциях, семинарах, коллоквиумах, а также политики советского правительства и научных организаций в области заграничных командировок в 1925–1960 гг. Эти воспоминания особенно ценны сведениями, которые обычно нельзя отыскать в официальных научных отчетах: личными впечатлениями ученого от посещения английских городов (в первую очередь – Лондона) и графств, библиотек, архивов, научных учреждений и университетов; от неформального общения с коллегами – профессорами, молодыми исследователями и студентами, – и обсуждения развития научных, культурных и дипломатических отношений СССР и Великобритании.

Seventeen new species and three new subspecies are described, including M. aenescens yelang Zhou, new subspecies, M. bannaensis Zhou, new species, M. brevigaster Zhou, new species, M. chongli Zhou, new species, M. crassus Zhou, new species, M. furvus Zhou, new species, M. furvus weishanus Zhou, new subspecies, M. gaoligongensis Zhou, new species, M. iridescens Zhou, new species, M. lincangensis Zhou, new species, M. linglong Zhou, new species, M. metallicus Zhou, new species, M. minor, Zhou, new species, M. planus Zhou, new species, M. purpurascens Zhou, new species, M. sinicus Zhou, new species, and M. yunnanus Zhou, new species from Yunnan, China; M. chongli glaber Zhou, new subspecies from Yunnan, China and North Vietnam; M. curvitibialis Zhou, new species from Guangxi, China, and M. luoxiaoshanus Zhou, new species from Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi, China. Parergodrilus heideri Reisinger, 1925 is one of two species of the family Parergodrilidae (together with the marine litoral, interstitial species Stygocapitella subterranea Knöllner, 1934) and one of only two truly soil-dwelling “polychaetes” (the other being Hrabeiella periglandulata Pižl and Chalupský, 1984) that are predominantly known from terrestrial habitats (Reisinger 1925, 1960; Römbke and Jans 1991; Chalupský 1992; Graefe 1993; Rota 1997, 1998; Purschke 1999; Rota et al. 2001; Beylich and Graefe 2007; Martinez-Ansemil and Parapar 2009; Rota et al. 2010). Due to its small body size (adults up to 1 mm) and sensitivity to dessication, the species has usually been found by researchers using some type of wet extraction for soil mesofauna, such as enchytraeids and free-living flatworms (“turbellarians”). However, due to its similar chaetae, Parergodrilus heideri can be easily mistaken for a freshly hatched enchytraeid, even by enchytraeid specialists without experience with this species.

Resumen

Based on a census of the polychaete fauna of the Socotra Archipelago in the Indian Ocean we report here new findings on the genus Syllis Savigny in Lamarck, 1818. These ten species are newly recorded from this area: Syllis alternata Moore, 1908; Syllis bouvieri Gravier, 1900; Syllis broomensis (Hartmann-Schröder, 1979); Syllis compacta Gravier, 1900; Syllis crassicirrata (Treadwell, 1925); Syllis gerlachi (Hartmann-Schröder, 1960); Syllis hyalina Grube, 1863; Syllis lutea (Hartmann-Schröder, 1960); Syllis schulzi (Hartmann-Schröder, 1960); Syllis ypsiloides Aguado, San Martín & Ten Hove, 2008. Additionally, Syllis qamhiyn sp. nov. is described as a new species, characterized by its conspicuously thick and short dorsal cirri filled with a gelatinous substance and reduced number of compound chaetae from medium to posterior parapodia, with enlarged shafts and short blades which become almost unidentate and do not fuse with shafts. Following an examination of the holotype of S. bouvieri, its status as a valid species and not as synonym of Syllis prolifera Krohn, 1852, as considered by some authors (see Licher 1999) is confirmed, and a redescription is included.

The Neotropical thread-legged bug genus Ghilianella Spinola, 1850 is the most diversified within Metapterini. A taxonomic revision of Ghilianella is presented, in which seventy seven species are recognized as valid, with twenty-one described as new: Ghilianella berengeri sp. nov.; Ghilianella bifurcata sp. nov.; Ghilianella bolivari sp. nov.; Ghilianella caldensis sp. nov.; Ghilianella dilatata sp. nov.; Ghilianella embera sp. nov.; Ghilianella fernandezi sp. nov.; Ghilianella ferruginosa sp. nov.; Ghilianella gilsantanai sp. nov.; Ghilianella goliath sp. nov.; Ghilianella gracilis sp. nov.; Ghilianella huaorani sp. nov.; Ghilianella jaguar sp. nov.; Ghilianella laticauda sp. nov.; Ghilianella maricruzae sp. nov.; Ghilianella quimbaya sp. nov.; Ghilianella scimitarra sp. nov.; Ghilianella tica sp. nov.; Ghilianella urbanoi sp. nov.; Ghilianella ventrimaculata sp. nov.; and Ghilianella weirauchae sp. nov. For the first time a female specimen is described for Ghilianella atriclava Bergroth, 1911, Ghilianella colona McAtee & Malloch, 1925 and Ghilianella pachitea McAtee & Malloch, 1925. Three new synonyms are recognized: Ghilianella bulbifera Champion, 1898 (=Ghilianella pendula McAtee & Malloch, 1925 syn. nov.; Ghilianella inflata Maldonado, 1981 syn. nov.) and Ghilianella strigata McAtee & Malloch, 1925 (=Ghilianella fenestrata Maldonado, 1960 syn. nov.). Eleven species are considered nomina dubia and one species nomen nudum. A key to species and digital images of the external morphology and genitalic structures for each species are provided. Additionally, we offer the first phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships within Ghilianella, using cladistic methods. Based on the phylogenetic results we dismiss all subgenera in Ghilianella and discuss the complex evolution of the abdominal expansions.

Resumen

This article examines the history of the Chilean Legal Aid Service (Servicio de Asistencia Judicial) from the 1920s until the 1960s. It argues that with the emergence of the “social question”—the concern for improving the lower classes' working and living conditions to promote the nation's modernization and prevent political radicalization—the Chilean legal profession committed to legal aid reform to escape a professional identity crisis. Legal aid allowed lawyers to claim they had a new “social function” advocating on behalf of the poor. However, within legal aid offices, lawyers interacted with female social workers who acted as gatekeepers, mediators, and translators between the lawyers and the poor. This gendered professional complementarity in legal aid offices helped lawyers to put limits on their new “social function”: it allowed them to maintain legal aid as a part-time activity that did not challenge the structure of the legal system as a whole.

Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo uma análise histórica dos cursos de formação de professores e dos programas de ensino de Matemática para a escola primária na Bahia entre 1836 (ano da instituição da primeira escola normal do Estado) e 1960 (década demarcada pelo Movimento da Matemática Moderna), levando-se em conta as reformas educacionais estaduais de 1890, 1913, 1918 e 1925 e as determinações para estrutura e funcionamento do Ensino Primário e dos Institutos Normais de Educação. As fontes históricas documentais, em especial as alocadas junto ao Repositório da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), são parte do constructo investigativo: Quais as permanências e rupturas referentes aos cursos de formação de professores e aos programas de ensino de Matemática pautadas na legislação educacional e nas práticas pedagógicas das escolas normais e da escola primária da Bahia entre 1836 e 1960? Os resultados da pesquisa elaboram uma trajetória da escola normal, bem como do ensino de Matemática no Brasil, em particular, na Bahia, séculos XIX e XX.

The name Sorbus dacica Borbás (1887: 404), which refers to a well-defined species endemic to Romania, is widely accepted (e.g. Jávorka 1924–1925, Nyárády 1939, Kárpáti 1940, 1960, Buia 1956, Warburg & Kárpáti 1968, Dihoru & Pârvu 1987, Ciocârlan 2009, Dihoru & Negrean 2009, Kurtto 2009, Sârbu et al. 2013). This species is supposed to be of hybrid origin between some taxa of S. subgen. Aria Persoon (1806: 38) and S. aucuparia Linnaeus (1753: 477) of S. subgen. Sorbus; such hybrids and stabilized hybridogenous species are currently classified in S. subgen. Soraria Májovský & Bernátová (2001: 21).

Abstract This article traces the origins of applied linguistics within North America. The primary sources of information were responses from a survey of leading applied linguists conducted in 1999 and a review of records from professional associations, chiefly those associated with the Linguistic Society of America, back to its foundation in 1924. Evidence is reported of the recognition of applied linguistics even with that designation as early as 1925. Extensive work is cited of an applied nature for three decades after that, much of it not carrying any such label. Likewise, language related activity conducted by many known more as specialists in other fields is reported from throughout the nineteenth century. A chronological record of North American applied linguistics is proposed showing four phases. The first predates the foundation of the Linguistic Society of America (prior to 1924). The second, labeled the post LSA period, covers the years from 1925 through 1959. The third, the early applied era, extends from 1960 to 1990 and the fourth, the independent status period extends from 1990 to the present. Summary comments portray the character of applied linguistics in North America in relation to similar activities in other geographical areas.

New taxonomic and faunistic data for eight species of Paraphloeostiba Steel, 1960 (Omaliini) from China and Laos are provided. Three new species are described and illustrated: P. ampliata sp.n. (China: Yunnan), P. brancuccii sp.n. (Laos), and P. cooteri sp.n. (China: Zhejiang). A new synonymy is established: P. formosana Shavrin & Smetana, 2016 = P. amooraphila Shavrin, 2017 syn.n. Paraphloeostiba opacicollis Steel, 1960 is redescribed, illustrated, and recorded from Laos for the first time. A key to the species of Paraphloeostiba of China and Laos is presented. Previous records of P. apicalis (Cameron, 1925) from China are doubtful; additional material from Indonesia and the Philippines is reported. Paraphloeostiba sulcicollis (Fauvel, 1904) is recorded from China for the first time. New records of Paraphloeostiba are reported: P. apicalis from Mindanao (Philippines), P. formosana Shavrin & Smetana, 2016 from mainland China and Vietnam, P. gayndahensis (MacLeay, 1873) from Yunnan, and P. sonani (Bernhauer, 1943) from Myanmar. Abstract The discussion of floods in this paper covers the section of the Odra River basin from its source down to the mouth of the Nysa Klodzka River and the section of the Vistula River basin down to the Krakow profile. The area of the upper part of Odra River basin is 13,455 km2 and the length of the river bed in this section is ca. 273.0 km. In the reach examined, the Vistula River is 184.8 km long and has a catchment area of approximately 8,101 km2. Geographical and environmental conditions in the upper part of the Vistula and Odra Rivers basins are conducive to floods both in the summer and winter seasons. The analyses conducted for the 19th and 20th centuries demonstrate that two main types of floods can be distinguished. Floods with a single flood wave peak occurred in the following years in the upper Odra River basin: 1813, 1831, 1879, 1889, 1890 and 1896, and on the Vistula River they were recorded in 1805, 1813, 1816, 1818, 1826, 1830, 1834, 1844 and 1845. In the 20th century, similar phenomena were recorded on the Odra River in 1903, 1909, 1911, 1915, 1925, 1960, 1970 and 1985, and on the Vistula River they occurred in 1903, 1908, 1925, 1931, 1934, 1939, 1948, 1951, 1970, 1972, 1991, 1996, 1997 and 1999. The second category includes floods with two, three or more flood wave peaks. These are caused by successive episodes of high rainfall separated by dry periods that last for a few days, a fortnight or even several weeks. Such floods occurred on the upper Odra River in 1847, 1854, 1880, 1888, 1892, 1897 and 1899; while on the Vistula River only two (1839 and 1843) floods featured two flood wave peaks. In the 20th century on the upper Odra River, floods of this type occurred in 1902, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1972, 1977 and 1997; on the upper Vistula River, they were recorded in 1906, 1915, 1919, 1920, 1940, 1958, 1960 and 1987.

Foi realizada a revisão sistemática dos equinoides pertencentes às ordens Phymosomatoida e Arbacioida da Formação Jandaíra, Bacia Potiguar provenientes de três localidades fossilíferas. Para a ordem Phymosomatoida foram revisadas as espécies Rosadosoma riograndensis (Maury, 1925) e Phymosoma major Coquand,1862, e para a ordem Arbacioida, Goniopygus sp. As espécies Cyphosoma majus (Coquand, 1862) e Phymosoma tinocoi (Santos, 1960) foram consideradas sinônimas de Phymosoma major. Goniopygus sp. foi transferida para Goniopygus durandi Perón & Gauthier, 1881. A partir dos dados biométricos dos exemplares de Rosadosoma riograndensis e Phymosoma major foi verificado que o diâmetro da carapaça influencia de forma significativa a altura das carapaças, assim como o diâmetro do perístoma. Além disso, foram observados diferentes estágios ontogenéticos nos exemplares analisados. Na Formação Jandaíra, os equinoides endocíclicos tiveram seu registro do Turoniano ao Santoniano.

Weibull functions provide close least square fits to tables for stand basal area and density versus age in even-aged, second-growth red spruce as reported by W. H. Meyer (USDA Tech. Bull. No. 142. 1929). The annual mean radial and basal area increments of the trees can be calculated from the two Weibull functions. For a stand following Meyer's tables and reaching breast height in 1915, mean tree basal area increment increases steadily to a maximum in the early 1960's and then declines; mean radial increment is constant from 1925 to 1955 and then declines rapidly. This behavior matches very closely the results from 3001 red spruce increment cores in New England and New York, which suggests that forest aging is an important cause of decreasing red spruce diameter growth.

Los arquitectos Enric Tous (1925; t. 1952) y Josep Maria Fargas (1926-2011; t. 1952) alcanzaron un éxito notable durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970 gracias a su trabajo comprometido con la experimentación técnica y la exploración de nuevos sistemas constructivos. Entre sus aportaciones más significativas destaca la incorporación del poliéster armado con fibra de vidrio como material aplicado a soluciones de cerramientos ligeros. Este artículo rastrea el origen, contexto y resultados que obtuvieron con este material. Se propone un acercamiento al material GRC a través de la experiencia desarrollada por los arquitectos, analizando las características e implicaciones específicas de los sistemas propuestos en sus proyectos. A través de esta lectura se pone en valor la iniciativa industrial puesta en práctica por Tous y Fargas, detectándose los aspectos clave que limitaron la progresión del sistema constructivo.

Negotin Krajina geographically belongs to Mezian tablet that means it is widely open to the influences from the East but main air influences come from the West and North-West causes specific thermal characteristics. Meteorological station "Negotin" is the only one respectable station in the Krajina then we analyze results from various periods since 1901. It is important to emphasize that station "Negotin" doesn't have work continuity since the beginning of the century, thus for analyzing certain climate elements we have had to use method of analogy with station "Zajecar". A part of that, observations were not done by the same methodology so there is lack of some important indicators for this first period. To determine air thermo-regime of Negotin Krajina during 20 century, standard periods (1901-1930., 1931-1960. and 1961-1990) for analyzing climate elements suggested by WMO, were compared. Also, periods from 1925. to 1940. and from 1990. to 2000. were added to this analysis (according to data we had).

As duas congregações de Notre-Dame de Sion, fundadas na França por Théodore Ratisbonne com dez anos de intervalo, possuem uma comunidade de nome e objetivo, assim como uma regra bastante análoga. Seu desenvolvimento foi, entretanto, bastante diferente. Segundo os critérios da época, a obra de conversão dos judeus não poderia ser exclusivamente feminina. Os padres de Sion foram, então, criados para se dedicar ao apostolado direto do carisma congregacional, mas se desenvolveram com dificuldade a partir de 1925 e adotaram uma orientação conversionista. Já a congregação feminina se afastou progressivamente desse carisma, consagrando-se, com a anuência do fundador, ao ensino das elites. Enquanto as irmãs se submeteram às determinações da hierarquia católica, que as destinavam ao apostolado indireto, as relações entre as congregações decorreram harmoniosamente. O conflito entre elas estalou nos anos 1960, quando as irmãs decidiram investir no campo intelectual e teórico, tradicionalmente reservado ao sexo masculino durante séculos.

Sweet cherry breeding started at Vineland and Summerland in 1915 and 1924 and has resulted in the naming and introduction of 11 and 18 cultivars, respectively. `Victor' and `Van' were the first cultivars named from Vineland and Summerland, respectively, in 1925 and 1944. `Van' has become a popular cultivar in North America and Europe. The main objective in these breeding programs has been to develop cultivars that produce large quantities of firm-fleshed, crack-free, flavorful, large, black cherries with a range of maturity dates to extend the season of harvest. In the 1960's, the development of self-fertile cultivars was added to the objective of the programs. Already several self-fertile cultivars and advanced breeding selections have been named and introduced from Canada. The programs have also contributed to the assignment of cultivars to different pollen-incompatibility groups and verification of pedigree of sweet cherry cultivars. The impact of these long-term breeding programs in Canada and abroad will be discussed in detail.

SummaryThe history of the early identification of elements and their designation to the Mendeleev Table of the Elements was an important chapter in German science in which Ida (1896-1978) and Walter (1893-1960) Noddack played an important role in the first identification of rhenium (element 75, 1925) and technetium (element 43, 1933). In 1934 Ida Noddack was also the first to predict fission of uranium into smaller atoms. Although the Noddacks did not for some time later receive the recognition for the first identification of technetium-99m, their efforts have appropriately more recently been recognized. The discoveries of these early pioneers are even more astounding in light of the limited technologies and resources which were available during this period. The Noddack discoveries of elements 43 and 75 are related to the sub sequent use of rhenium-188 (beta/ gamma emitter) and technetium-99m (gamma emitter) in nuclear medicine. In particular, the theranostic relationship between these two generator-derived radioisotopes has been demonstrated and offers new opportunities in the current era of personalized medicine.

José María Dusmet (1869-1960) fue un reconocido entomólogo español, especialista en macrohimenópteros, que desarrolló su labor vinculado al Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales aun sin ocupar oficialmente puesto alguno. En 1925 un joven universitario de Valencia, Modesto Quilis (1904-1938), contactó con él para solicitarle consejo para progresar en su afición por los insectos. A partir de ese momento, y durante más de diez años, Dusmet fue iniciando a Quilis en la práctica entomológica profesional. Así, le asesoraba en la adquisición de ejemplares y bibliografía, al tiempo que le facilitaba contactos entre especialistas nacionales y extranjeros y le resolvía dudas de nomenclatura y taxonomía. Además, le inició en un cierto ethos caballeresco de la práctica naturalista. Con el tiempo, Quilis logró una inserción profesional como entomólogo especialista en microhimenópteros y control biológico de las plagas del campo, iniciando una prometedora carrera que frustró su temprana muerte. Las cartas que ambos intercambiaron, conservadas en el Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, ponen de relieve los detalles de un magisterio en la distancia intensamente cargado de admiración mutua y cultivo de la amistad.

In a recent New York Times article, Robert Sharoff reported on “a throwback to the early years of the 20th century when wealthy Chicago families tended to live in such close-in neighborhoods as Prairie Avenue and theGold Coast.” For the past five years, wealthy Chicagoans have been constructing “palatial residences of at least 6,000 square feet” in the Lincoln Park neighborhood a mile and one-half north of the Loop (Sharoff 2000: 36). This “return” of the well-to-do to the city contradicts traditional urban theories on elite residential patterns; the preponderance of these theories projects the upper class universally and continuously seeking the metropolitan fringe for new homes, more and open land, and/or lower density (Burgess 1925; Hoyt 1939; Alonso 1964; Adams 1987; Downs 1981; Luger 1996; Lowry 1960; Hartshorn and Muller 1989; and Knox 1994).These theories, as well as the notion of the recent return of the upper class to the city, mask a long history of continuing elite residence within some cities as well as considerable diversity in upper-class residence patterns and landscapes among cities.

Phyllanthus polyphyllus Willdenow (1805: 586) is at present considered to be an accepted name applied for a species distributed in the peninsular India and Sri Lanka (e.g. Wight 1852, Thwaites 1861, Müller 1866, Hooker 1887, Trimen 1898, Gamble 1925, Webster 1997, Gangopadhyay et al. 2007, Chakrabarty et al. 2012). As regards Phyllanthus racemosus Linnaeus f. (1782: 415), it is at present considered to be a synonym of Synostemon bacciformis (L.) Webster (1960: 26), based on Phyllanthus bacciformis Linnaeus (1771: 294), according to the recent treatment by Van Welzen et al. (2014). However, it may be mentioned that it was Willdenow (1805: 582) who first misinterpreted P. racemosus by referring it to an Indian specimen (“Habitat in India orientali” – Klein s.n., B–W17973–010 [digital image!]), which is identifiable as Synostemon bacciformis. Later, Müller (1863) while describing Agyneia bacciformis (L.) Jussieu (1824: 24, t. 6) var. angustifolia cited P. racemosus as its synonym. Subsequently, Hooker (1887) and Pax & Hoffmann (1922) cited P. racemosus as a synonym of Agyneia bacciformis, while Van Welzen (2003) placed it as a synonym of Sauropus bacciformis (L.) Airy Shaw (1980: 685).

O achado da partitura extraviada do "Trio paro cordas", de 1914, pelo Instituto de Musicologia de Colônia e sua divulgação pela rádio alemã, no início dos anos de 1960, contribuíram decisivamente para a redescoberta do compositor Jeff Golyscheff. Dispõe-se hoje de um registro fundamental de sua produção - embora de teor quase exclusivamente nominal - com um ponto de partida nessa obra escrita para violino, viola e violoncelo, que o fez um dos criadores da música dodecafônica, ao lado de Joseph Mathias Hauer. A esse trabalho inovador, publicado em 1925, em que emprega o princípio da "durata ", recorrendo a elementos seriais e estocásticos, sucederam-se outras peças de vanguarda: as duas óperas escritas em 1915-6: "Cyrano de Bergerac" e "Oper"; músicas de câmara, peças de canto e o poema sinfônico com o título irreverente de "Das eisige Lied, Dauer eine Stunde und 40 Minuten" (contendo uma parte de características prenunciadoras do happening. Num outro momento, ele comporia músicas para os primeiros filmes sonoros alemães e russos. Igualmente, é ele o autor da "Antisinfonia", cujas dissonâncias aturdiram o público em evento do Club Dada de Berlim, em 1919. Entre os seus maiores incentivadores achava-se Ferruccio Busoni. É uma infelicidade que, à exceção do "Trio para cordas ", nenhuma outra de suas partituras subsistisse (ou reaparecesse).

Resumen

The article compares seven versions of S. Marshak’s poem for children “Ice Cream”. Three of them (1925, 1940 and 1957) are recognized as the canonical editions, and others (of the 1929, 1949, 1960.1962) as their variants. The final version for posthumous publications is ascribed, without any reason given, to 1960 production year, with deviations taken from different publications of this text. The article analyzes the reasons underlining such transformation of the text that include changes in realia, social tastes and mores, stylistic and ideological tendencies of the 20th century, and the poet’s desire to harmonize his creative attitudes with external factors. The analysis demonstrates that although the editing process of the text was organic, the difference between editions is so great (only 30 verses are shared between all of the editions) that the reproduction of all versions is needed for scholarly and the critical editions of Marshak’s poetry. His editing method is compensatory: the plot and style varied, but the philosophical and ethical subtext important for Marshak as a creative individual remained the same. These are archetypal ideas of joyful acceptance of the objective laws of nature, the glorification of those who support world harmony, and the condemnation of those who violate it. The appendix contains a comparative table showing the history of Marshak’s text.

The start, end, duration and intensity of the thermal growing season (the period with mean daily temperatures exceeding 5°C) during the past century (1890-1995) was analysed at nine sites in the Nordic region. Statistical comparisons were made between three adjacent 35-year periods. The results indicate that the growing season lengthened considerably at all sites between 1891-1925 and 1926-1960. Lengthening has continued at a slower rate up to the present at the eight Fennoscandian sites but not at the Icelandic site. In contrast, the intensity of the growing season, expressed by effective temperature sum above 5°C, which increased at all sites between the first two periods, has decreased slightly at all locations except Turku in recent decades. Under three scenarios, representing the range of estimated greenhouse gas-induced warming by the 2050s, the growing season is expected to lengthen at all sites. For a “Central” scenario, the greatest lengthening is computed for southern and western Scandinavia (7-8 weeks) with smaller changes in Finland (4 weeks) and Iceland (3 weeks). With a lengthening growing season during the past century in Fennoscandia, there are likely to have been impacts on natural and managed ecosystems. Some evidence of recent biotic and abiotic effects already exists, but other indicators of long-term change remain to be analysed.

Abstract. We investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of multidecadal climate variability in the North Atlantic realm, using observational data, proxy data and model results. The dominant pattern of multidecadal variability of SST depicts a monopolar structure in the North Atlantic during the instrumental period with cold (warm) phases during 1900–1925 and 1970–1990 (1870–1890 and 1940–1960). Two atmospheric general circulation models of different complexity forced with global SST over the last century show SLP anomaly patterns from the warm and cold phases of the North Atlantic similar to the corresponding observed patterns. The analysis of a sediment core from Cariaco Basin, a coral record from the northern Red Sea, and a long-term sea level pressure (SLP) reconstruction reveals that the multidecadal mode of the atmospheric circulation characterizes climate variability also in the pre-industrial era. The analyses of SLP reconstruction and proxy data depict a persistent atmospheric mode at least over the last 300 years, where SLP shows a dipolar structure in response to monopolar North Atlantic SST, in a similar way as the models' responses do. The combined analysis of observational and proxy data with model experiments provides an understanding of multidecadal climate modes during the late Holocene. The related patterns are useful for the interpretation of proxy data in the North Atlantic realm.

Resumen

The main purpose of the present study is to explore and evaluate the diachronic relations between Russia and Cyprus, noting their historical context and to examine the perceived image1 of Russia in the Cypriot press, during the crucial period of Eurogroup’s decisions of March 2013.In 1878 the UK rented Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire in exchange of a British promise to help Turkey against Russia. In 1914, the UK annexed the island and Cyprus became a British Colony because the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War on the side of the central powers. According to the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), the Ottomans quitted all of their requirements on Cyprus-and the new status led the UK to declare the island as a Crown’s colony in 1925 (Stavrinides 1975, p.2). This event coincided with the creation of the Communist Party of Cyprus (1926) as a blueprint for the global resonance that the Bolshevik movement gained, expressed in the October 1917 Revolution. These events resulted in cultivating within the working class of Cyprus, a communist ideology which, over time, founded the Cypriot Left. Apart from the ideological associations or the religious ones, on the basis of common doctrine, since 1960, after the founding of the Republic of Cyprus, these relations have become transnational in political and economic terms.
