Célkitűzés: Az országos kiterjedésű, szervezett emlőszűrési program 2002 januárjában indult el Magyarországon a 45–65 év közötti nők számára 2 éves szűrési intervallummal. A dolgozat célja a szervezett emlőszűrési program részvételi mutatóinak meghatározása, beleértve a szűrési és diagnosztikus célú képalkotó emlőfelvételek gyakoriságának elemzését. Adatok és módszerek: Az elemzésben szereplő adatok az Országos Egészségbiztosítási Pénztár finanszírozási adatbázisából származnak, és a 2000–2005 közötti 6 évet ölelik fel. A 45–65 éves nők körében meghatározták azok arányát, akik a szervezett szűrést megelőző két évben (2000–2001), illetve a program első két ciklusában (2002–2003, 2004–2005) akár szűrési, akár diagnosztikai célú képalkotó emlővizsgálaton vettek részt. Eredmények: A szűrési célú képalkotó emlőfelvételen részt vettek aránya (átszűrtség) a 2000–2001-es 7,4%-ról a 2002–2003-as, illetve 2004–2005-ös szervezett emlőszűrési ciklusban 34,0, illetve 29,5%-ra emelkedett. A diagnosztikus célú képalkotó emlőfelvételen részt vettek aránya (átvizsgáltság) pedig ugyanezen időszakokban 19,8%-ról 22,1 (2002–2003), illetve 23,2%-ra (2004–2005) emelkedett. Az országos lefedettség (átszűrtség + átvizsgáltság) ennek megfelelően a szervezett szűrés hatására 26,2%-ról (2000–2001) 53,5%-ra (2002–2003), illetve 50,8%-ra (2004–2005) nőtt a vizsgált kétéves ciklusban a 45–65 év közötti nők esetében. Következtetés: A magyar emlőszűrési program kezdeti részvételi arányai 2004–2005-ben kissé csökkentek; az emlőrák miatti halálozás érdemi csökkentéséhez ennek emelése szükséges.

SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of influenza virus co-infections in humans and changes in the genetic variability of A(H3N2) virus strains in southern Italy from 1999 to 2009. A partial sequence of the haemagglutinin (HA) gene by human influenza H3N2 strains identified in oropharyngeal swabs from patients with influenza-like illness was analysed by DNA sequencing and a phylogenetic analysis was performed. During the seasons 1999–2000, 2002–2003, 2004–2005 and 2008–2009, the influenza viruses circulating belonged to subtype H3N2. However, A(H1N1) subtype virus and B type were respectively prevalent during the 2000–2001, 2006–2007, 2007–2008 and 2001–2002, 2003–2004, 2005–2006 seasons. The HA sequences appeared to be closely related to the sequence of the influenza A vaccine strain. Only the 2002–2003 season was characterized by co-circulation of two viral lineages: A/New York/55/01(H3N2)-like virus of the previous season and A/Fujian/411/02(H3N2)-like virus, a new H3 variant. In this study, over the decade analysed, no significant change was seen in the sequences of the HA gene of H3 viruses isolated.

O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar o comportamento da variabilidade têmporo-espacial da pluviosidade na região de Unaí, noroeste do estado de Minas Gerais-Brasil. A metodologia consistiu no uso de dados pluviométricos de 100 estações da Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA) e 22 estações meteorológicas (INMET), correspondendo ao recorte temporal entre os anos de 1995/1996 e 2014/2015, empregados na determinação dos anos-padrão pela técnica do desvio padrão e mapeados pelo método dos polígonos de Thiessen. Os resultados possibilitaram identificar a espacialização dos padrões regionais de pluviosidade, caracterizados temporalmente como: Chuvoso (1996/1997, 2003/2004 e 2006/2007); Chuvoso/Tendente a Chuvoso (2010/2011); Habitual/Tendente a Chuvoso (2005/2006); Habitual (2001/2002, 2002/2003, 2008/2009 e 2009/2010); Seco/Tendente a Seco (1995/1996, 1997/1998, 2000/2001, 2007/2008 e 2013/2014); Seco (2014/2015); Misto (1998/1999, 1999/2000, 2004/2005, 2011/2012 e 2012/2013). A interpretação dos padrões regionais (mapas) e locais (estações pluviométricas no transecto) das chuvas proporcionou relacioná-los com os fatores de teleconexões do clima (ENOS/ODP) e extremos de pluviosidade.

Objectives To analyse the effect of an organized, nationwide breast cancer screening programme on non-organized mammography activities in Hungary. Setting The nationwide dataset of the Hungarian National Health Insurance Fund Administration covering the years 2000-2005. Methods Data derived from the nationwide database of the Hungarian National Health Insurance Fund Administration. The study includes all women undergoing mammography before (2000-2001) and after (2002-2003/2004-2005) the introduction of organized screening. Results The number of women having non-organized (opportunistic/diagnostic) mammograms was around 250,000 in 2000-2001, but increased to 350,000 in 2005. In the age group 45-64 years in 2000-2001, only 27.4% of all women undergoing mammography were examined within locally-organized programmes. After the introduction of the nationwide programme, this percentage increased to 61.0% in 2002-2003, and 56.3% in 2004-2005. After the introduction of the nationwide organized programme (2002-2003), the proportion of organized screening mammographics remained among the highest in county Hajdú-Bihar (78.4%) and Zala (88.3%) and increased significantly in county Vas (87.7%). Conclusion The introduction of an organized nationwide screening programme in Hungary resulted in increases in the number of screening mammographics, and also of non-organized mammographics. Although the ratio of organized screening versus non-organized mammography changed in favour of screening mammographics, there are large within-country differences between counties.

RESUMO As injúrias causadas pelo ácaro-branco em cultivares e linhagens avançadas de algodoeiro disponíveis no Brasil foram avaliadas em três experimentos de campo conduzidos em Campinas, SP (2001/2002 e 2005/2006) e em Guairá, SP (2003/2004). As áreas experimentais foram instaladas segundo um delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com seis repetições, sendo as parcelas constituídas por uma linha de 5 m de comprimento. No total, 36 genótipos diferentes foram utilizados. Foram estabelecidos 16 tratamentos em 2001/2002 e 2003/2004 e 18 em 2005/2006. A avaliação foi feita após intensa ocorrência da praga, sem realização de controle químico, sendo atribuídas, em nível de parcelas, notas de 1 a 5, crescentes com o tipo e a intensidade dos sintomas. Verificou-se, nos três experimentos, ampla e gradual diversidade entre os genótipos, com as notas médias variando de 1,77 (IAC 23) até 4,20 (Sure Grow 821) no experimento de 2001/2002, de 1,45 (COODETEC 401) a 4,63 (MG 0110) no experimento de 2003/2004 e de 1,86 (FMT 702) a 4,74 (Stoneville 474) no experimento de 2005/2006. A análise conjunta de quatro genótipos comuns aos três experimentos corroborou as evidências de ampla e gradual diferença entre os genótipos, indicando IAC 24 e Fibermax 966 como menos danificadas e Deltaopal e Makina como as mais afetadas.

The new millennium has brought a number of research articles and books that relate to instrumental (including vocal) teaching in higher education (Hunter & Russ, 2000; Jørgensen, 2000, 2001; Ritterman, 2000; Davidson & Da Costa Coimbra, 2001; Davidson & Good, 2002; Froehlich, 2002; Mills, 2002, 2004a, 2004b, 2005, in press; Nerland & Hanken, 2002; Nielsen, 2002; Federation of British Conservatoires 2003; Kokotsaki & Davidson, 2003; Mills & Smith, 2003; Mills et al., 2004; Burt & Mills, in press). Many of these publications have been written, at least to some extent, from a distance. The researchers have looked at instrumental teaching in higher education from their experience of schools, ‘academic’ teaching in universities or institutional management, for example, and have set their research questions, and sought the answers to these questions, accordingly.

Ossified clavicles, either as paired elements or as a median furcula, have been recorded in all major clades of dinosaurs, including ornithischians, sauropodomorphs, and theropods (Bryant and Russell, 1993). Nearly all but the most basal theropods, Eoraptor lunensis and Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis, have an ossified furcula including coelophysids (Downs, 2000; Tykoski et al., 2002; Carrano et al., 2005), allosauroids (Chure and Madsen, 1996), tyrannosaurids (Makovicky and Currie, 1998; Larson and Donnan, 2002; Brochu, 2003; Lipkin and Sereno, 2004; Larson and Rigby, 2005), therizinosaurids (Xu et al., 1999a; Zhang et al., 2001), oviraptorids (Barsbold, 1983; Clark et al., 1999, 2001; Hwang et al., 2002; Osmólska et al., 2004), troodontids (Xu and Norell, 2004), and dromaeosaurids (Norell et al., 1997; Norell and Makovicky, 1999; Xu et al., 1999b; Burnham et al., 2000; Hwang et al., 2002). No ossification of any element beyond the coracoid has been found in the pectoral girdle of the well-preserved primitive theropods, Eoraptor lunensis and Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis.

e21524 Background: Primary breast sarcoma usually was considered a rare malignant disease [Adem et al., 2004]. The aim of this study is to show the incidence of breast sarcoma in the region with female population of about 600,000. Methods: Retrospective comparative analysis of breast sarcoma and breast cancer incidence in female of Ternopil region for 2000 - 2008. Descriptive statistical method was used. Results: The total of 101 cases of breast sarcoma was diagnosed in female of 39 - 76 years of age. Every year about 11 (6–18) primary breast sarcomas and 256 (233–279) patients with primary breast cancer were detected. The incidence rate of breast sarcoma was 1.14 per 100,000 women in 2000, 2.94 (in 2001), 1.48 (2002), 0.99 (2003), 2.16 (2004), 1.67 (2005), 2.53 (2006), 2.03 (2007) and 1.87/100,000 in 2008. The incidence of breast cancer was ranged from 37.3 to 46.4 per 100,000 of female population. Breast sarcoma consisted of 2.5% of the breast malignancies in 2000, 6.5% (in 2001), 3.3% (2002), 2.6% (2003), 5.4% (2004), 4.1% (2005), 5.9% (2006), 4.4% (2007) and 4.7% in 2008. Pathohistologic examination revealed angiosarcoma in 92.1% of cases. Thus, our findings are significantly different than data of other authors: f.e., the incidence of primary breast sarcoma is at 45 new cases per 10 million women [Confavreux et al., 2003], or 17 new cases per million women [Moore and Kinne, 1996], and breast sarcoma accounting for 0.0006% of breast malignancies which were diagnosed in 1910–2000 [Adem, 2004]. Taking into account all historical and recent data we can suggest beginning of biological changing in correlation between breast malignant tumors–carcinoma and sarcoma. Conclusions: Our statistical finding shows that incidence of breast sarcoma is 1.87 (0.99–2.94) per of 100,000 female population, and now sarcomas consist of 4.4% (2.5–6.5%) of all malignant breast tumors. Angiosarcoma is a most common (92.1%) morphological type of breast sarcomas. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

This paper uses a dynamic general equilibrium model to analyze and quantify the aggregate effects of the timing of tax rate changes enacted in 2001 (which called for successive rate reductions through 2006) and 2003 (which made immediate tax rate cuts scheduled for 2004 and 2006). The phased-in nature contributed to the slow recovery from the 2001 recession, while the elimination of the phase-in helped explain the increase in economic activity in 2003. The simulations suggest while the tax policy was a drag on the economy in 2001 and 2002, it increased economic growth in 2003, once phase-ins were eliminated.

O presente artigo tem como objetivos compreender os princípios da Pedagogia do Oprimido e da Educação Bancária, ser uma forma de denúncia do processo de opressão instituído, até hoje, na escola pública brasileira e propor, como um anúncio de superação desta condição, a Educação como Prática da Liberdade. O referencial teórico fundamenta-se em Freire (2006, 2004, 2003, 2001a 2001b), Apple e Beane (2001), Lima (2002) e Giroux (2002). Pode-se evidenciar que a pedagogia crítico-libertadora freireana é uma possibilidade para a construção de uma escola pública, democrática e com qualidade social. There is a growing desire amongst students of architecture to work, either in the UK or in developing countries, in situations where technical and cultural change is rapid and resources are scarce. At the same time self organizing local communities have become recognized as the most effective client and interlocutor for generating meaningful debate on the transformation of their everyday environment. Diploma Studio 6 at the Department of Architecture and Spatial Design of London Metropolitan University has worked with specifically local, low income and marginalized communities in Kosovo (2000 + 2001) and India: Gujarat (2002), Meerut (2003), Delhi (2004 +2005) and Agra (2006) to generate proposals for meaningful change and improvement. This paper seeks to draw out some of the major themes of debate which have emerged.

A presente pesquisa analisou as causas do índice de rotatividade de médicos e enfermeiros das equipes da Estratégia de Saúde da Família, com no mínimo dois anos de implantação em março de 2006, no Vale do Taquari (RS). É um estudo quanti-qualitativo que identificou 31 equipes em 25 municípios, sendo o índice de rotatividade estabelecido por ano, de 1999 até 2005, e por categoria profissional. Em 1999 e 2000, não houve rotatividade de médicos e enfermeiros. Em 2002, a rotatividade de médicos foi de 5,9%; em 2003, de 32,1%; em 2004, de 25,8% e, em 2005, de 64,5%. Quanto aos enfermeiros, em 2001, a rotatividade foi de 27,3%; em 2002, de 47%; em 2003, de 17,8%; em 2004, de 41,9% e, em 2005, de 22,6%. A análise de conteúdo das entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas com sete médicos e sete enfermeiros apontou como principais causas de rotatividade a precarização do vínculo de trabalho, a fragmentação da formação, o estilo de gestão autoritário, a ausência de vínculo com a comunidade e más condições de trabalho. Esse contexto revela a necessidade de desencadear mudanças em relação aos vínculos trabalhistas, às condições de trabalho e à formação de trabalhadores e gestores da saúde, buscando a implementação da integralidade nas práticas de saúde.

In this paper we describe the process of updating a course syllabus designed to foster the development of language teacher autonomy for course planning and materials preparation. Three main factors were taken into account: participants' reactions and evaluations concerning the first version of the course, the new context, and the developments in the literature related to learner and teacher autonomy. We draw on literature concerning learner and teacher autonomy (Little 2000; Lamb 2000; Benson 1997a, 1997b, 2001; Dam 1995; Aoki 2002), on Critical Pedagogy (Freire 1970, 1973, 1980, 1996) and on studies that deal with learner and teacher narratives (Benson et al. 2003; Benson 2005; Murphey et al. 2005; Karlsson & Kjisik 2007; Liberalli et al. 2003; Telles 2002, 2004). We conclude by raising some questions concerning the theoretical and practical decisions made in the second version of the course and their implications.

Abstract Aerial applications of chorothalonil fungicide were carried out annually over 5 consecutive years, 1996–2000, on three sets of paired, 2-ha units in a Douglas-fir plantation affected by Swiss needle cast in the Oregon Coast Range. The effect of treatment on disease control was evaluated annually from 2001 to 2004. One- and 2-year-old foliage in the fungicide-treated units had fewer fruiting bodies of the pathogen Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii compared with the unsprayed units for foliage sampled in 2001. Total needle retention was also greater in the fungicide-treated units after five consecutive annual fungicide applications. Reduced P. gaeumannii infection in the fungicide-treated units persisted for foliage produced in 2001, which did not receive direct fungicide treatment. Reduced infection levels in the 2001 foliage cohort in the treated units was presumed to be due to the effect of disease control on inoculum production. At 4 years following the final treatment application, infection levels averaged over four foliage cohorts (2000–2003) remained significantly smaller for the fungicide-treated units. Trees in fungicide-treated units retained 10–50% of the 2000 needle cohort (4-year-old needles) and 25–60% of the 2001 cohort in May 2004. However, there was no detectable effect of treatment on infection for 2002 foliage sampled in 2003 or for 2003 foliage sampled in 2004 (1-year-old needles), suggesting that the duration of disease control was relatively brief.

The prevalence of toxigenic Clostridium difficile in Korea has been reported to be approximately 60–80 %. Although the prevalence of the tcdA−tcdB+ C. difficile strain was less then 5 % prior to the year 2000, it has become an emerging nosocomial pathogen in Korea. Therefore, we have attempted to determine the multicentre nationwide prevalence of tcdA+tcdB+ and tcdA−tcdB+ C. difficile for epidemiological purposes. C. difficile strains (n=724, 30 from 2000, 80 from 2001, 74 from 2002, 76 from 2003, 179 from 2004, 285 from 2005) were obtained retrospectively from January 2000 to December 2005 from in-patients at 6 hospitals, all of whom were suspected of having C. difficile-associated disease (CDAD), colitis or pseudomembranous colitis. The numbers of participating hospitals varied yearly (1 in 2000, 2 in 2001–2003, 3 in 2004, 5 in 2005). The hospitals were located in Seoul (n=4), Kyunggi Province (n=1) and Busan (n=1), Korea. PCR assays for tcdA and tcdB genes were conducted using 724 unduplicated C. difficile isolates. The mean prevalence of tcdA+tcdB+ and tcdA−tcdB+ C. difficile strains over the 6 years was 51.8 % (38.4–59.3 %) and 25.8 %(10–56.0 %), respectively. The mean prevalence of tcdA−tcdB+ C. difficile strains was less than 7 % until 2002, but began to increase in 2003 (13.2 %) and achieved a peak in 2004 (50.3 %). In 2005, the mean prevalence of tcdA+tcdB+ and tcdA−tcdB+ C. difficile strains was 47.7 % (30.9–60.3 %) and 27.0 % (17.6–54.8 %), respectively. This nationwide epidemiological study showed that tcdA−tcdB+ C. difficile strains have already spread extensively throughout Korea, and our results provide basic data regarding the controversies currently surrounding the toxigenicity of tcdA−tcdB+ C. difficile. The use of enzyme immunoassays capable of detecting both TcdA and TcdB is strongly recommended for the diagnosis of CDAD in microbiology laboratories, in order to control the spread of the tcdA−tcdB+ strains of C. difficile.

Resumo Este estudo analisou a distribuição espaço-temporal dos casos de leishmaniose visceral (LV) no estado do Maranhão, no período de 2000 a 2009. A partir do número de casos notificados, foram elaborados mapas temáticos para demonstrar a evolução da distribuição geográfica da doença no estado. Utilizou-se o método MCMC para estimação dos parâmetros do modelo bayesiano espaço-temporal para a identificação das áreas de risco. De 2000 a 2009, foram notificados 5.389 casos de leishmaniose visceral, distribuídos em todas as 18 Unidades Regionais de Saúde do estado, com as maiores incidências em: Caxias, Imperatriz, Presidente Dutra e Chapadinha. As Unidades Regionais de Saúde com maiores riscos relativos por biênio foram: Caxias e Barra do Corda (2000-2001), Imperatriz e Presidente Dutra (2002-2003), Imperatriz e Caxias (2004-2005), Presidente Dutra e Codó (2006-2007), e Imperatriz e Caxias (2008-2009). Houve uma considerável expansão geográfica da LV no Maranhão, sendo necessária a adoção de medidas mais eficazes de prevenção e controle da doença no estado.

Purpose This paper aims to analyse the evolution of European anti-money laundering discipline passing from the First Money Laundering Directive 91/308/EEC, that was only referred to banks and financial intermediaries, that has been furthermore extended to some activities and professions outside the financial sector. The research examines the different steps done buy Italian Legislation in the field of economic crime: at first Law n. 14/2003 of 3 February 2003 (Community Law 2002), they transposed the 2001 Directive 2001/97/EC and then the Law n. 56/2004 of 20 February 2004, that has implemented Directive 2001/97/EC. Now it is urgent to implement Directive 2005/60/EC that has extended the scope of the legislation, including the fight against the financing of terrorism and modified anti-money laundering obligations. Design/methodology/approach This paper deals with the Legislations of some European States (in particular UK and Italy) interpreting them by a comparative method. Findings This paper has put in clear some differences and some analogies between national legislations of different countries. Research limitations/implications In Italy, at first Law n. 14/2003 of 3 February 2003 (Community Law 2002), has transposed the 2001 Directive 2001/97/EC and then the Law n. 56/2004 of 20 February 2004, has implemented Directive 2001/97/EC. In 2005, Directive 2005/60/EC has extended the scope of the legislation, including the fight against the financing of terrorism and modified anti-money laundering obligations. Practical implications In the context of economic crime, capital investigations represent one of the most effective tools to fight the activities of organized crime in the phase of managing wealth illicitly produced and its immission in the circuit of the legal economy. Social implications The need of fighting economic crime must always be harmonized with the protection of right to privacy that has been acknowledged by Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights of 1950 as a fundamental right. Originality/value This paper develops the need to balance the right to privacy of every European citizen (Article 8 CEDU) with investigative power exercised by Public or Private Authorities, considering the possibility to comprise the first – if necessary – to allow the regular exercise of the second.

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate whether incorporating sunspot-groups classification information would further improve the performance of our previous logistic regression based solar flare forecasting method, which uses only line-of-sight photospheric magnetic parameters. A dataset containing 4913 samples from the year 2000 to 2005 is constructed, in which 2721 samples from the year 2000, 2002 and 2004 are used as a training set, and the remaining 2192 samples from the year 2001, 2003 and 2005 are used as a testing set. Experimental results show that sunspot-groups classification combined with total gradient on the strong gradient polarity neutral line achieve the highest forecasting accuracy and thus it testifies sunspot-groups classification does help in solar flare forecasting.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, por meio da análise dos componentes principais, a redução na dimensionalidade de atributos químicos e físicos do solo para a compreensão da variabilidade espacial e temporal da produtividade de culturas de grãos. A área experimental, de 54 ha, é manejada em agricultura de precisão há oito anos. Com base em seis mapas de colheita (soja - safra 2000/2001; milho - 2001/2002; soja - 2002/2003; trigo - 2003; soja - 2003/2004; e milho - 2004/2005), a área foi dividida em três zonas de produtividade de grãos (alta, média e baixa). Foram definidos 15 pontos georreferenciados representativos, para determinação de atributos químicos e físicos do solo, o que totalizou 63 variáveis analisadas. Entre os atributos químicos, o elevado teor de K no solo é o que melhor explica a variabilidade espacial da produtividade das culturas de grãos, provavelmente em razão do desbalanço das relações Ca:K e Mg:K. A zona de baixa produtividade apresentou baixa qualidade física do solo. Neste caso, a infiltração de água no solo, isoladamente, é a variável que melhor explica o desempenho das culturas de grãos. A análise dos componentes principais dos atributos químicos e físicos do solo é estratégia eficiente para explicar a variabilidade espacial e temporal da produtividade de culturas de grãos.

A retrospective study of laboratory records in selected hospitals in Zaria was carried out to determine the trend of malaria prevalence between 2001 and 2005. Data was obtained from the following selected hospitals: St Luke’s Anglican Hospital, Wusasa, Salama Infirmary, Saidu Dange railway Hospital and Sick Bay, Ahmadu Bello University, Main campus, Samaru. The selection of the hospitals was based on their geographical location and sizes. The prevalence was consistently high over the years; 2001–44.1%, 2002–59.45%, 2003–59.35%, 2004–58.30% and 2005–64.25%. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between malaria infection in males and females. Infection rates were significantly higher in children than adults (P<0.05) in all hospitals sampled except Salama Infirmary. Sick Bay in the main campus, Samaru had the least prevalence consistently over the five years period – 2001-27.0%, 2002-26.3%, 2003-21.8%, 2004-25.9% and 2005-33.2%. No clear seasonal variation over the years was observed. The study clearly showed consistent high prevalence over the five years period. Record keeping was useful as it provided data bur devoid of specific ages of attendees. Specific ages of hospital attendees rather than “children” or “adults” should be recorded and other demographic variables such as occupation and other socio-economic proxies should be included in laboratory record books

Jiaozuo is a typical resource-based city, and its economic transformation has been an example of success in China. However, quantitative evaluation of the city’s development has scarcely been performed, and future development is not clear. Because of this, using the relevant data from 1999 to 2013, this paper uses the data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to evaluate development after the transformation of Jiaozuo with the aim of providing a basis for its future developing plan. The results show that DEA was effective in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2012, was weakly effective in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2013, and was ineffective in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011. By evaluating the development of Jiaozuo, this paper provides policy implications for Jiaozuo’s sustainable development, and it may serve as a reference for the sustainable development of China’s other resources-based cities.

Teachers of international relations and comparative politics spend a considerable amount of time looking for ways to bring the politics of the world outside of the United States into their classroom to enhance student learning experiences through increased relevance or “reality.” Simulations are one method to make world politics seem more relevant (e.g., Dougherty 2003; Kille 2002; Shellman 2001; McIntosh 2001; Newmann and Twigg 2000; Kaarbo and Lantis 1997; Smith and Boyer 1996). The use of film is another popular method that enhances the drama and emotion of foreign cultures and politics (e.g., Waalkes 2003; Weber 2001; Kuzma and Haney 2001). Finally, the Internet and web-based technologies (e.g., Cogburn and Levinson 2003; Hauss et al. 2002; Bonham and Seifert 2000) and foreign newspapers (e.g., Schattle 2003) are also employed to connect textbook knowledge to the real world of foreign affairs.

O presente artigo analisa e descreve a multifuncionalidade do conector discursivo mas em construções contra-argumentativas, como elemento partícipe da organização tópica no texto oral formal. A partir da noção de tópico discursivo (JUBRAN et al, 2002; FÁVERO, 2003; JUBRAN, 2006; PINHEIRO, 2006; PENHAVEL, 2011; PENHAVEL; GARCIA, 2017) e nos conceitos relativos às construções contrastivas e contra-argumentativas (ALOMBA RIBEIRO, 2005; WELP, 2005; PORTOLÉS, 2001; NEVES, 2000; ANTUNES, 2005; FÁVERO, 2003; ANSCOMBRE; DUCROT, 1994) realizou-se uma análise descritiva e qualitativa de 29 ocorrências em uma elocução formal - EF, oriunda do projeto NURC / RJ, correspondendo ao corpus desta pesquisa. Como resultado, demonstra-se que a presença do conector mas sinaliza uma diversidade de sentidos, nos quais se envolvem elementos semânticos, pragmáticos, argumentativos e inferenciais que participam na articulação dos segmentos tópicos. Igualmente, postula-se o ato contra-argumentativo, em seus diversos graus de manifestação, como fator de segmentação tópica e episódica. Finalmente, são determinadas as funções proeminentes assumidas pelo conector em estudo.

A fungicide program for control of early leaf spot (Cercospora arachidicola) of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) in Georgia typically consists of a full-season program initiated ca. 30 days after planting (DAP) that includes seven applications made on 14-day intervals. Field tests were conducted in Tifton and Plains, GA in 2001 and 2002 to compare full-season and reduced programs of the fungicides pyraclostrobin (168 g a.i./ha), chlorothalonil (1.26 kg a.i./ha), and tebuconazole (227 g a.i./ha). Reduced fungicide programs were achieved by delaying initial applications at 14-day intervals from ca. 30 DAP to 45 through 105 DAP, totaling from 6 to as low as 2 applications per season, respectively. In 2003 and 2004, full-season programs of the fungicides pyraclostrobin and chlorothalonil were compared to reduced programs of pyraclostrobin. Reduced programs that received 6 and 5 applications were achieved by delaying the initial applications from ca. 30 DAP to 45 and 60 DAP, respectively. In 2001 and 2002, control of early leaf spot with pyraclostrobin was superior to that with chlorothalonil or tebuconazole within the respective initiation dates. Delaying the initial application of pyraclostrobin up to 60 DAP gave better control of leaf spot than for full-season programs of chlorothalonil or tebuconazole. Fungicide programs had no effect on yield at Plains in 2001 or Tifton in 2002. At Tifton in 2001 and Plains in 2002, yield decreased according to quadratic functions of time of spray initiation, with no indication of yield reduction until fungicide programs were initiated after 60 to 70 DAP. In 2003 and 2004, reduced programs of pyraclostrobin resulted in final levels of leaf spot that were similar to or lower than those in plots receiving a full-season program with chlorothalonil. Across both years, yields of reduced programs with pyraclostrobin were similar to those of full programs of either chlorothalonil or pyraclostrobin. Accepted for publication 11 December 2005. Irrigation water may harbor Phytophthora capsici, and irrigating susceptible vegetable crops with infested water can initiate epidemics. In this study, we evaluated the genetic structure of 106 P. capsici isolates collected from a creek used for irrigation (2002, 2003, and 2006) and from a field adjacent to the creek (2001) using six polymorphic nuclear loci. Bayesian clustering analysis detected four clusters in the sample, and some clusters occurred more or less frequently in certain years. In 2006, isolates belonging to cluster four predominated in the sampling. Mean pairwise FST values (0.008 to 0.065) indicated low differentiation between categories, but the most differentiation was observed when 2006 was compared to 2001 and 2002. Differences in isolate phenotypic traits were observed year-to-year. Isolates insensitive to mefenoxam were more common in 2006 and 2003 than in 2002 and 2001. The mating type ratio was approximately 1:1 in 2002 and 2003, but was skewed toward A1 in 2001 and toward A2 in 2006. Since irrigation water can remain infested or become reinfested annually with P. capsici for years after the adjacent fields are transitioned to nonsusceptible crops, growers are advised to avoid potentially infested irrigation water even after rotating to nonhost crops for several years.

Abstract Current FDA and pharmaceutical industry drug safety efforts rely on statistical review of large databases populated with voluntary reports of sADRs. These data are limited by low rates of complete reporting and high rates of underreporting. Improved post-marketing drug surveillance efforts are needed to improve patient safety. The RADAR project is an academic pharmacovigilance program that focuses on small numbers of thoroughly researched cases of sADRs. In the last decade, RADAR has utilized the resources of a comprehensive cancer center and a global network of collaborators to evaluate and disseminate information on sADRs, many of which are related to hematology. Between 1998 and 2007, RADAR investigated and reported 16 hematology-associated sADRs. RADAR disseminated information on over half of the sADRs within 2 years of FDA approval, compared to half of all new sADRs documented in the Physician’s Desk Reference within 7 years of FDA approval. RADAR’s novel pharmacovigilance methods identified previously undetected sADRs based on small numbers of completely described reports. The RADAR project’s experience shows that private sector programs that utilize small yet comprehensive datasets can significantly contribute to pharmacovigilance networks in hematology. As the FDA develops public-private networks to evaluate safety concerns associated with new drugs, focused independent efforts can assume increasing importance to address unmet needs. A regional climate model named Providing REgional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) adapted in generating rainfall scenarios for the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) region. At first, PRECIS generated rainfall scenario is calibrated with ground-based observed rainfall during baseline period (1961-1990) in Bangladesh. The regression coefficients obtained through calibration are utilized for validation of PRECIS simulated rainfall during 2000-2006. PRECIS overestimated rainfall by 12.37%, 1.58%, 10.81%, 4.79 and 13.18% in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006 respectively. It underestimated by 0.64% and 10.84% in 2001 and 2004 respectively. On an average, PRECIS overestimated about 4.47% of surface rainfall. Better performance of PRECIS through validation encourages employing it in rainfall forecasting for Bangladesh. In the second step, rainfall and temperature forecast for Bangladesh is experimentally obtained for 2010-2020. This work discloses that the PRECIS simulated rainfall and temperature are not directly useful in application purposes. However, after performing calibration, acceptable result is obtained in estimating annual rainfall in Bangladesh with correlation coefficient is 0.90. Change of rainfall is forecasted from -0.99% (in 2013) to 5.3% (2018) for Bangladesh during 2010 - 2020.

Morbidity with gonorrhea in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania during 1999-2012 has been analyzed. The highest incidence of gonorrhea in the RNO was marked in 2002-2003 (correspondingly 161, 3 and 154, 7 per 100 000 of population). During next 2004-2012 years gonorrhea morbidity has been gradually decreasing and in 2012 it made up 48,4. Among patients with gonorrhea in 1999-2005 and in 2007 the number of female patients prevailed (52,0-55,5%) and in 2006 and in 2008-2012 male patients had gonorrhea more often (52,5-72,5 %). More often occurred at the age of 20-29 (38,7% in 2000 and 55,1% in 2011) and then at the age of 30-39 (21,9% in 2000 and 30,0% in 2011), and in 2012 at the age of 18-19 (55,0%). Among 86 children with gonorrhea revealed in the North-Ossetia Republican dermatovenerological hospital in 2001-2004 were 83 (96,5%) girls and 3 (3,5%) boys. And only one girl was infected sexually (being raped), other children were infected in a common way. 71 (82, 6%) of these children have been revealed actively, it being known that obstetricians and gynecologists revealed gonorrhea in 46 (53, 5%) girls.

Backgrounds. We examined the effect on the prognosis of critically ill pediatric patients after a closed ICU policy was implemented into an adult ICU that admitted children.Materials and Methods. We assessed the Pediatric Index of Mortality 2 (PIM2) score of pediatric patients (≤15 y.o.) admitted to the ICU from 2001 to 2009. In our teaching hospital, the department for intensive care was established in January 2004. Since then, for critical care patients, we have followed a closed ICU policy with full-time intensivists. We subsequently compared PIM2 scores and the ratio of observed-to-expected deaths (O/E ratio) for three three-year periods: 2001–2003 (before closed policy), 2004–2006, and 2007–2009.Results. Data was collected from 532 pediatric patients. While the PIM2 score statistically significantly increased from0.066±0.130for 2001–2003 to0.114±0.239for 2004–2006 and0.086±0.147for 2007–2009, the O/E ratio decreased from 1.49 for 2001–2003 to 0.82 for 2004–2006 and remained at 0.82 for 2007–2009.Conclusion. The O/E ratio for critically ill pediatric patients improved after the establishment of a closed policy in an adult ICU that admitted children.

Background. Much of the literature on obesity has consistently documented the unprecedented rise in body weight over the past 2 decades. Less attention is paid to future projections of the population distribution of body mass index (BMI). Objective. To forecast the distribution of BMI in children (6—17 years) and adults (>17 years) in the United States (US) by age group, sex, and race over the period 2004—2014. Methods. Analysis of Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (2001—2002 and 2004— 2005) to estimate and compare the 1-year transitions across BMI categories for children and adults. Forecasting distributions of obesity over 2004—2014 using a probabilistic population-level simulation model and validating it with prevalence data from 2005—2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results. During 2004— 2005, a majority of adults in each BMI category remained in the same category after 1 year, these estimates being not significantly different than the corresponding estimates in 2001—2002. Among children, stabilities within BMI categories are low during 2004—2005, and compared with 2001—2002, transition probabilities into overweight class 2 from other BMI categories increase substantially. Forecasts reveal significant increases in the risk of overweight category among children 6 to 9 years old (5% to 14% in 5 years), with a greater increase anticipated in males, and increases in the overweight category for many years to come for adults, although the adult obesity prevalence remains at the current levels. Conclusions. Although the absolute levels of obesity remain high among US adults, the growth in obesity appears to have stagnated. On the contrary, continued growth in the prevalence of the highest BMI category for children is anticipated.

Pretendemos articular as noções de “letra” e de “ressurreição” de modo não temático, mas em uma leitura que destaca a imanência do texto, a superfície textual. Para tal, recorremos ao arcabouço teórico advindo da Teoria Literária (AMARANTE, 2009; BLANCHOT, 2011, 2005; BRANCO, 2011, 2000; LAERE, 1969; MANDIL, 2003; SCHÜLER, 2004), Teologia (AQUINO, 2002; BALTHASAR, 1971), Psicanálise (LACAN, 2007, 2009, 2008) e Filosofia (NANCY, 2001, 2006). Com isso, procuramos compreender de que modo a ilegibilidade do texto de James Joyce convida a uma leitura que privilegia a materialidade da “letra” tal como está escrita: em um movimento des-contínuo, no qual o texto é escrito como um corpo em continuidade – o texto é reconhecível como feito de letras – disruptiva – o sentido não se constrói a modo de decodificação de enredo e interpretação – que se desvanece; a esse movimento, chamamos de “ressurreição”.</p>

Drawing on the Critical Discourse Analysis grid put forth by scholars such as Van Dijk (2001a&b, 2004, 2006), Fairclough (1989, 1995, 2001, 2003), Van Leeuwen (1996, 2008), Meyer (2001), Caldas-Coulthard & Coulthard (1996), Wodak (2001), the current paper exuded how institutional social power is deployed to naturalize ideologies as common sense or common knowledge in a sample text drawn from a contemporary feminist novel, notably Sefi Atta’s Everything Good Will Come (2006). It also tried to unravel how, through discursive structures and properties, the womenfolk resist or/and transgresses the established sociocultural norms and conventional ideologies as regards gender, role assignment and power. Finally, it advocated the view that only gender-balanced power relations between men and women can ensure a fair social justice and peaceful society.

The basic objective of the existing study was to inspect the triangular association between economic growth, poverty, and income disparity in farming and non-farming communities across agro-climatic zones in Punjab province, Pakistan. The cross-sectional Household Integrated Economic Survey (HIES) data and Poverty Equivalent Growth Rate (PEGR) methodology were applied from 2001–2002 to 2015–2016. Outcomes of the study found that in a short period, 2001–2002 to 2004–2005; 2004–2005 to 2005–2006; 2005–2006 to 2007–2008; 2007–2008 to 2010–2011; 2010–2011 to 2011–2012; 2011–2012 to 2013–2014; and 2013–2014 to 2015–2016, economic growth has presented hybrid (pro-poor and anti-poor) pattern across both communities of all agro-climatic zones of Punjab province in different periods. In the longer period of 2001–2002 to 2015–2016, economic growth has been pro-poor across both communities of all the zones apart from zone III (Cotton-Wheat Punjab); there is an anti-poor pattern of economic growth. Results for the decomposition of change in poverty further indicate that economic growth is a dominant factor in reducing poverty for all investigated zone. Moreover, a positive redistribution component reduces the beneficial impacts of economic growth for the poor more than for non-poor, that ultimately makes economic development patterns anti-poor in zone III. In the present study, we proposed two-fold policy implications. First, improve the living standard of households in each agro-climatic zone by increasing their incomes. Second, develop a precise taxation system that helps to reduce income disparities among upper-pro to lower-income groups.

From the Middle Jurassic on, the Tethys basin opened westward; the existence of a Carribean corridor linking the European and Pacific realms now appears well supported by comparison of marine reptile assemblages (e.g., Gasparini and Fernández, 1997, 2005; Gasparini et al., 2000; Fernández and Iturralde-Vinent, 2000; Gasparini and Iturralde-Vinent, 2001, 2006; Gasparini et al., 2002). Marine transgression in Mexico began during the Callovian, as evidenced by the evaporites of the Minas Viejas Fm. However, microfossils and invertebrate assemblages indicate that the Mexican Gulf remained isolated from both the European Archipelago and the Pacific, at least temporarily, until the middle Berriasian; the Florida uplift and southward movement of Yucatan were proposed as possibly forming a barrier (Salvador et al., 1993; Adatte et al., 1994, 1996; Goldhammer, 1999; Goldhammer and Johnston, 2001; Gasparini and Iturralde-Vinent, 2006). After almost a decade of field work and examination of collections, the Late Jurassic marine reptile assemblage of north-east Mexico confirms the conclusions drawn from microfossils and invertebrates. Poorly diagnostic ichthyosaur remains, with various thalattosuchians, numerically dominate the assemblage. Sauropterygians are rare, mainly represented by large pliosaurids of unclear affinities, a few vertebrae attributed to elasmosaurids, and a unique cryptoclidid. Turtles are yet to be reported (Frey et al., 2002; Buchy et al., 2003, 2005b, 2006a–d; Buchy, 2007, 2008a, b; material currently under study).

A temática discutida neste trabalho refere-se à reflexão dos gêneros discursivos sob a perspectiva teórica da Análise Dialógica do Discurso (ADD). O texto apresenta os conceitos bakhtinianos que amparam a constituição da ADD, delineando o surgimento e o desenvolvimento dessa corrente de estudos, situando-a como uma perspectiva que busca encaminhamentos metodológicos para as discussões relacionadas à linguagem, ao discurso e ao enunciado. A pesquisa desenvolvida mostra uma possibilidade de relação entre teoria e prática, indicando como a proposta bakhtiniana pode ser conferida em um enunciado concreto, moldado em um gênero discursivo, utilizando-se, para isso, um texto do gênero cartaz. Os resultados verificados ratificam a necessidade de um olhar dialógico para as relações que se estabelecem nos elementos que configuram o gênero discursivo e apontam possibilidades de compreensão do texto conforme o percurso sugerido pelos estudos bakhtinianos, orientadores da ADD. O lastro teórico contempla os embasamentos de Cattani e Holzmann (2006), Furtado e Freitas (2004), Fullan (2000), Messina (2001), Leite, Cunha e Lucarelli et al. (1999), Santos (2006, 2008), Viotto e Macedo (2003), e Leite (2005), Audy (2006), e outros. This study aims at analysing metaphorical expressions and reconstructing TERRORISM metaphors in British and Lithuanian media political discourse in the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics and political philosophy (Lakoff and Johnson 1999, Johnson 1993, Elshtain 2004, Fairclough 2001, Spencer 2006, Turner 2002, etc.). For that purpose, thirty-six analytical articles, searched by the key word ‘terrorism (En.) / terorizmas (Lith.)’ were collected from the online archives of The Economist and www.politika.lt. The method applied to investigate the collected data is that of qualitative analysis in the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics and conceptual metaphor theory (Чудинов 2001, Fauconnier and Turner 2002, Kövecses 2002, Lakoff 2001, 2002, etc.). The findings reveal that despite different time patterns of the collected data sources (i. e. English 2010; Lithuanian 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) the analogous metaphors of WAR, CRIME and HEALTH have been reconstructed. Their analysis shows the prevalence of pragmatic political morality to TERRORISM governed by the concepts of STRENGTH, ORDER and CONTROL. Even more, their use spreads fear of terrorism by exploiting the image of terrifying war scenes, serious criminal activities and the deadly virus rapidly contaminating social order.
