Resumen
Radioimmunoassay (RIA) of salivary C19-delta-16-steroids (16-androstenes) in six Lacombe and seven Yorkshire mature boars (1 wk pre-castration and 12 wk postcastration) plus 13 intact control boars (seven Lacombe and six Yorkshire) was tested as a "noninvasive" method to estimate boar taint in porcine fat. Salivary 16-androstenes (P < 0.05) decreased 4–5 wk after castration, fluctuated over the next 7 wk and were still 27.5% of initial levels by the 12th wk, when boar taint in the fat had decreased to undetectable levels. In conclusion, the RIA measurement of 16-androstenes in saliva is not a reliable indirect method of estimating boar taint levels in fat. Key words: Boar taint, castration, 16-androstenes, salivary steroids

Resumen
Forty-nine boars and 13 gilts were fed ad libitum from 20 to 100 kg body weight. Fifteen boars and four gilts were slaughtered at 100 kg and the remaining animals were fed ad libitum or at 70% of ad libitum feed intake from 100 kg liveweight until they were slaughtered at 130 kg. Backfat samples were collected from the lumbar region of all pig carcasses at both slaughter weights, vacuum packaged and stored at −20 °C. Fat samples (10 g) were saponified and extracted with hexane and ether. Extracts were evaporated under nitrogen, and androstenol (5α-androst-16-en-3α-ol; 5α-androst-16-en-3β-ol) and androstenone (5α-androst-16-en-3-one; 5β-androst-16-en-3-one) were quantified by gas chromatography using 5α-androstane-3, 17-dione as internal standard. A trained panel of eight women scored the odor intensity of each fat sample on a scale of 1 (no odor) to 6 (strong odor). Androstenone was detected in backfat from all boars and concentrations ranged from 0.06 to 3.42 μg g−1 of fat with a mean value of 0.76 (±0.10, SEM) μg g−1. Five boars had no detectable backfat androstenol while the highest concentration recorded was 1.8 μg g−1 fat. Neither steroid was detected in gilt backfat. Odor intensity of fat samples heated by soldering iron or in sealed vials was greater (P < 0.01) for boars than for gilts. Boars weighing 100 kg had lower (P < 0.05) backfat odor intensity score and androstenone concentration than 130-kg boars. Androstenol concentration and odor intensity of fat were significantly correlated (r = 0.42; P < 0.05) with age of ad libitum fed boars. There was a significant quadratic response of odor intensity determined by vial test to increasing androstenol concentration in fat (R2 = 50%) but the relationship between odor score and steroid content was otherwise linear. The concentration of androstenol in boar backfat was only one-half of the androstenone concentration but it explained some variation in odor score over and above (7–16%) that which was explained by androstenone. Resumen
ABSTRACTTwo experiments employing 72 and 48 pre-pubertal Large White ♂ × (Large White ♂ × Landrace ♀) gilts respectively were carried out to investigate the involvement of various boar stimuli in the induction of precocious puberty in the gilt. Experiment 1 consisted of the following treatments commencing at 165 days of age: (1) contact with an androgenized, castrated male; (2) contact with an androgenized castrated male plus a recording of boar chants; (3) as treatment (2) plus exposure to a solution of 16-androstene steroids, 3α-androstenol (5α-androst-16-en-3α-ol) and 5α-androstenone (5α-androst-16-en-3-one); and (4) contact with an entire boar. In experiment 2, additional exposure to boar urine occurred in treatments (2) and (3).Exposure of gilts to tactile, visual and auditory cues from the boar had little effect on puberty attainment. The additional exposure to 16-androstene steroids did stimulate puberty but was not as efficacious as boar exposure. Additional exposure to boar urine improved the puberty-stimulating effect of the castrated males, and further additional exposure to 16-androstenes produced a response approaching that obtained by boar exposure. These results confirm the involvement of olfactory cues from the boar in stimulating puberty in the gilt. The olfactory cues appear to be 16-androstene steroids present in boar saliva and some undefined compound(s) present in boar urine. These experiments suggest that olfactory stimuli from the boar require the simultaneous exposure to tactile and possibly also visual and auditory cues from the boar in order to stimulate the onset of puberty in the gilt.cues from the mature boar are also involved in mediating the stimulation of puberty. Exposure of gilts to isolated sources of androstene pheromones was ineffective in stimulating puberty (Kirkwood et al., 1983), whereas exposure to contact with a sialectomized boar order to stimulate the onset of puberty in the gilt.

Resumen
16-androstenes Anosmia in Men 16-androstens are compounds of steroid character which are secreted to the skin as part of apocrine glands secrets and they participate in creating body odor. It was found that androstenes influence affective state and psychophysiological reactions. The effect of androstenes can be also found on subliminal level. However, it has not yet been tested whether individuals with specific anosmia could also be influenced this way. Specific anosmia is described as an individual's incapability of conscious detection of particular odor while the detection of other compounds remains unaffected. The aim of the thesis is to test whether specifically anosmic individuals can be influenced by compounds to which they are anosmic to. This hypothesis is based on research of sensitization. Previous research indicates that olfactory perception may be of larger plasticity than thought. The theoretical part focuses on critical analysis of androstenes and research on specific anosmia. This field contains topics such as influence of chemical structure on androstenes perception, genetic influences, sensitization, functions of androstenes in interpersonal interactions and research on brain imagining. The experimental part focused on measuring subjective ratings of mood and psychophysiological...
