Texto completoThe present doctoral thesis offers an intersectional analysis of the housing pathways of working class young people in Bologna, and of the role played by their family in the transition towards independent living, within a broader reflection on processes of reproduction and intergenerational transmission of social inequalities. The first part sets out the national and international sociological debate on youth’ social and housing inequalities, as well as the debate on social class. In the second part, the focus is on the empirical research. In particular, questions are raised on how families belonging to a particular social class, as understood in Bourdieu’s terms, negotiate and support the transition to independent living of their adult-children. The empirical study consists of a retrospective longitudinal qualitative research, carried out in Bologna in 2013-2014 on a sample of working-class families. Through life histories, young-adults and their parents were asked to reconstruct their biographies and housing experiences. The research highlights the emergence of specific and creative "micro-economic family systems". Through analysis on the collected materials, it was possible to identify several forms of parental support in young-adults’ pathways towards independent living, embedded in a wider system of intergenerational support, which continues even after leaving the family nest and confirms once again the strong ties characterizing Italian families. In the study, particular attention is given also to logics of legitimacy of parental support, underlying working class families' decisions of helping their adult-children. Finally, by comparing young adults’ idea of independence with that of their parents, the research reveals an apparent contradiction between representations of autonomy and independent living and everyday life practices, which is being solved by negotiating, between the two generations taken in exam, the meaning of independence itself.

The term "Mixed Culture" refers to the sociological condition experienced by those who have a cultural heritage which is different from the culture in which they were raised or live in. In this mixture, there are characteristics from either that remain distinct, yet coexist. I identify myself and my culture as an American, but I was also raised with and practice certain traditional Korean customs which were passed down to me by family. I find that I am constantly moving between two states, where I identify with either of my two cultures, sometimes distinctly separate or at other times both concurrently. This constant moving between two different states or cultures, as well as being able to simultaneously identify with two different positions describes the experience of being part of a mixed culture. This thesis takes these definitions and sociological characteristics as the starting point to defining Asian American architecture. Instead of continuing to base Asian American architecture on applied decorations, the architecture will draw upon the spatial characteristics found in traditional architectural examples, as well as juxtapose different elements within one building. This center and hotel has three components: a health center offering instruction and treatments based upon East Asian medicinal practices such as acupuncture, herbal pharmacology, massage, yoga, and tai chi, a tea cafe for service to the street and a small hotel whose residents will be registered users of the center from outside of the Bay Area. In addition to the architectural elements and the program, the site, located in between Nob Hill and the historic core of Chinatown in San Francisco, California, acts as another arena to address the mixing between two different neighborhoods.

Accurate sensory perception in noisy environments requires physiological mechanisms that reduce sensory interference. In the auditory system, it has been hypothesized that attentional control of cochlear responses to sound facilitates listening in noisy environments by modulating the effects of medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent activity in the cochlea. However, conclusive support for this hypothesis has been elusive over the past 50 years. We investigated this issue using a novel experimental paradigm in which human subjects performed auditory tasks on transient sounds presented in acoustic noise, while we recorded click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) in the task ear. CEOAEs are low-level sounds that are generated in the cochlea, recorded in the ear-canal and provide a non-invasive measure of the MOC effects on cochlear mechanical responses to sound. Our results show clear evidence that attending to transient sounds in noise caused an increase in MOC activity during the auditory task. MOC activity was greater on trials with correct responses compared to trials with incorrect responses, which provides evidence that the MOC activity brought about a perceptually beneficial change in cochlear operation. In addition, the task-dependent MOC activity scaled with auditory task difficulty and varied with task instructions. These results indicate the existence of a dynamic task-dependent interaction between the cochlea and the brain that has the function of optimizing cochlear operation to enhance auditory perceptual accuracy in noisy acoustic environments.

Parades are many things. They are treasured annual traditions, community gatherings, expressions of identity and pride. Parades interrupt the daily flow of city life, rerouting traffic, crowding sidewalks and public transportation, and interrupting business activities. Parades are revealing. They are a stage for the performance of identities and interests that are otherwise invisible to the average city resident. Parades are deceptive. They present an image of unity and order that belies the messy and contested nature of collective identity formation. They appear to be emergent cultural practices, but they are more likely aggregate culture than to produce it. They embody stable relationships as much as they inspire spontaneous participation. Parades are public expressions of communities' identities, interests, and values. As such they are like distorted mirrors reflecting the hopes and fears of not just one community but many communities and ultimately of the larger society. This dissertation examines one type of parade - the American ethnic parade - to understand the shifting meaning of ethnicity and nationalism in Chicago, Illinois, from its origins in the nineteenth century to its present twenty-first century context. The question driving this research is how national identities can accommodate change and incorporate new members (such as immigrants and minorities). More specifically, it examines what ethnic parades in one American city can tell us about this process. An in-depth historical analysis uses the history of ethnic parades in Chicago to explore the shifting politics of immigrant incorporation from 1860 until 1990. Drawing on thirty-seven interviews conducted with parade organizers, local scholars, and city officials as well as observation of parades, parade planning meetings and other community events, analysis of Chicago's contemporary ethnic parades illuminates the myriad functions of ethnic during Chicago's transition to a global city. Specifically, it explores how expressions of hybridized nationalism in ethnic parades disguise a complex interplay among local political integration, economic advancement, and transnational political activism that is shaping Chicago's local ethnic communities.

Texto completoThe idea of creating a single currency dates back to the origins of Mercosur and still pervades the imagery of various political leaders in South America (UNCTAD, 2007; BICHARA, CUNHA and LÉLIS, 2008; DEOS, MENDONÇA and WEGNER, 2010). Despite the distance between intentions and practice, the recent period is packed with new features. The global financial crisis has tested the limits of American leadership and the neoliberal model. In its wake the power of emerging nations has grown. The G8 lost prestige to the G20. Before the crisis, the strong global economic growth, under the Chinese leadership, led to the rise in commodity prices, favoring the emergence of a growth cycle combined with a better internal and external financial situation of most South American economies. If after the debt crisis in the 1980s instability and cyclical divergence marked the interaction between the South American countries, the first decade of the 21st century witnessed a convergence more virtuous. In this context, new initiatives of monetary and financial cooperation are gaining strength, especially the proposal of the Bank of the South, the creation of the Structural Convergence Fund for Mercosur and the Local Currency Payment System, among other initiatives. Therefore, it seems to be surging a space for innovation in the midst of an international scenario marked by the "rise of the rest" and the relative decline of the United States. Considering the case of South America, from the Brazilian perspective, this research aims to study the possibility, costs and benefits of further monetary and financial cooperation at the regional level. Assuming that short-term substantial reforms are not expected for the international monetary system (UNCTAD, 2007; OCAMPO, 2006) and observing a trend of emergence of a multimonetary system (EICHENGREEN, 2011), the main goal is to answer the following questions: (i) would be viable the emergence of a South American monetary subsystem focused on the Brazilian economy? (ii) given the regional differences, how integration can progress without compromising national development? and (iii) the mechanisms of monetary and financial cooperation that exist today can ensure progress in regional integration?

The effect of 'the network topology of social contacts the dyriamics of ,epidemics has been studied recently in general network models (small world, scale free, etc), showing effects that give another dimension to the results of typical mean field, or absence of epidemic threshold and epidemic threshold depends on the topology. Motivated by these results; we analyze and implement theoretical and computational fflodels for the sprea,d of epidermes. In terms of contribution, first, we present an algebraic solution for the SIR model in the mean field approximátion. Further, we develop a network model for the dynarnic interaction between individuais in which develops an epidemic. Among the results, we found that the characteristic time of formation of the network against the time of disease infiuences the dynamics of the epidemic. Finally, using the dynamics of the disease, we cornpáred a real network of loving contacts with the network model. We conclude that real static structure behaves like a random network and that the insertion of the formation dynamies of interactions attenuates the effects of the epidernic..

Pollution risks coming from the shipping traffic is one of the real risks that Spanish coast can face. It is much closed the remember of the Fedra bulk carrier in the strait of Gibraltar, the Prestige tanker in Finisterre or the Castor near accident off the Almeria coast. The main objective of this paper is to analyse, identify and further to quantify, the areas in the Mediterranean Spanish coast, with biggest risk of suffering a hydrocarbons spill coming from the tankers maritime traffic. The study, in which this paper is based, has been considered a set of variables among which we can remark the geographic particularities, the climatic issues, the ships' age or the traffic density; that are going to feed an algorithm. This objective function will weight those different parameters in the entire coast and will identify the ones with the biggest risk probability. The results are going to put in evidence where are the most critical areas in the Spanish coast, when talking about its risk of spill.
THE GEOGRAPHICAL SCENARIO
The Mediterranean Sea extends approximately on 3,800 km from East to West and 800 km from North to South, covering a surface of 2.5 millions of km2 which represents 5 times the surface of Spain. Its basin keeps a volume of 3.7 million of km3 with an average depth of 1,500 km which is clearly lower than the ocean average. The Mediterranean Sea is linked to the Atlantic Ocean through the Gibraltar Strait that is about 14 km wide and 300 metres deep. Other secondary passes from the hydrological point of view, is the connection with the Black Sea and the Indic Ocean through the Red Sea. From a general point of view we can identify two clear basins in the Mediterranean, limited by the Sicily canal and called Eastern and Western Mediterranean...
The Mediterranean basin, is identified by the limited agricultural, forest, cattle and even fishing, resources, including the energetic ones at least in the Northern coast, but with large reserves of natural gas and hydrocarbons in the Southern coast. In a parallel sense we find a population of 500 millions of persons and around 300 millions of tourists per year that are expected in this decade. Also in this coast there are the main hydrocarbons export ports, most of all in Libya, the Mediterranean country with the biggest reserves. In the European coast we must remark the port of Marseilles, as the biggest import port in terms of volume, with 65 millions of metric tonnes per year or Italy where there are placed the three main ports of such kind of traffic, with an added volume of 90 millions of metric tonnes.
The Mediterranean hydrocarbon traffic routes, from a internal point of view, are the ones from North to South and East to West, but we should add the crude oil traffic in transit that in the year 2006 sum up to 421 millions of metric tonnes only of crude oil, from which 72 millions where among non intra Mediterranean ports [1].

Texto completoAbstract The Public Sector has, in recent years, moving towards an approach of its management with the Private Sector. It’s true that is difficult to measure the activity and results achieved by some public organisms. However, the society increasingly expects a greater transparency of information and provision of financial responsibility (Accountability) by the public organisms. Indeed, is this ideology that characterizes what is today known as the New Public Management. It’s true that this new management requires new procedures and information systems that could allow a better allocation of scarce resources, made available to the public organisms. But it is also expected that these procedures and information systems can help support the decisions of the decisions organisms. The current work aims to analyze the planning work in the Portuguese Army, embodied by the Activities Plan inserted into the Integrated Management System, determining its contribution as a management tool to support decision making. This research work is divided in two parts. In the first part was carried out a theoretical framework, addressing the Public Sector, Public Financial Management and Planning Activities. The second part, which consists, in field work research methods, concerns the presentation and analysis of results, conclusions and recommendations. For data collection, was made a survey, a case study and survey interviews. As a result of this investigation, we noted that the Activities Plan has the necessary conditions to be qualified as a management tool. However, there still are some problems to be overcome, particularly regarding the evaluation of the plan and its control.

A method for deterministically calculating the population variances of Monte Carlo particle transport calculations involving weight-dependent variance reduction has been developed. This method solves a set of equations developed by Booth and Cashwell [1979], but extends them to consider the weight-window variance reduction technique. Furthermore, equations that calculate the duration of a single history in an MCNP5 (RSICC version 1.51) calculation have been developed as well. The calculation cost, defined as the inverse figure of merit, of a Monte Carlo calculation can be deterministically minimized from calculations of the expected variance and expected calculation time per history. The method has been applied to one- and two-dimensional multi-group and mixed material problems for optimization of weight-window lower bounds. With the adjoint (importance) function as a basis for optimization, an optimization mesh is superimposed on the geometry. Regions of weight-window lower bounds contained within the same optimization mesh element are optimized together with a scaling parameter. Using this additional optimization mesh restricts the size of the optimization problem, thereby eliminating the need to optimize each individual weight-window lower bound. Application of the optimization method to a one-dimensional problem, designed to replicate the variance reduction iron-window effect, obtains a gain in efficiency by a factor of 2 over standard deterministically generated weight windows. The gain in two dimensional problems varies. For a 2-D block problem and a 2-D two-legged duct problem, the efficiency gain is a factor of about 1.2. The top-hat problem sees an efficiency gain of 1.3, while a 2-D 3-legged duct problem sees an efficiency gain of only 1.05. This work represents the first attempt at deterministic optimization of Monte Carlo calculations with weight-dependent variance reduction. However, the current work is limited in the size of problems that can be run by the amount of computer memory available in computational systems. This limitation results primarily from the added discretization of the Monte Carlo particle weight required to perform the weight-dependent analyses. Alternate discretization methods for the Monte Carlo weight should be a topic of future investigation. Furthermore, the accuracy with which the MCNP5 calculation times can be calculated deterministically merits further study.

Texto completoDomestic violence against women is considered a serious public health problem in Brazil and worldwide. Studies with marital aggressors seem to be fundamental to the understanding of such violence so common nowadays. The main goal of this thesis was to investigate life history and personality characteristics of men who perpetrated violence against women, held in the Central Prison of Porto Alegre. It consists of three sections: one theoretical and two empirical. The first section is theoretical, and aimed to search subsidies to understand how traumatic events in this men childhood may influence on the relations they will establish with others and their capacity to control the free expression of aggressiveness (death drive) in adult’s romantic relationships. The concept of narcissism, as an organizer or deconstructive process of the psyche, was used to understand the psychological functioning of the marital aggressor. The second section, empirical (developed from qualitative methodological assumptions), introduced the study that aimed to cover the research project main objective, which was conducted with the participation of three men (marital aggressors). All men answered to a Personal and Socio-Demographic Data Sheet, MINI Interview, the Rorschach Method and a series of three semi-structured interviews guided by three main topics, respectively:a) the participant's life story; b) marital choices and the presence of violence in romantic relationships and c) the current situation in prison as a result of violence committed. The results were examined through Interpretative Analysis and grounded on assumptions of psychoanalytic theory. Three assertions have been identified: a) helplessness and violence as marks in the life history and psychic constitution of marital aggressors; b) marital choice and the perpetuation of violence as manifestations of narcissistic failure and c) Maria da Penha Law and the recover experience of the feeling of abandonment. It was possible to understand the violence committed as a result of a life story marked by traumatic experiences that produced narcissistic failure and the free expression of aggressiveness (death drive). The third and final section, also of empirical nature, explored the interconnections between trauma, narcissism and death drive through a clinical case analysis of one of the research participants. The influence of life history in the marital relationship and in the violent act committed by this man was explored, as well as his personality characteristics. The presence of helplessness and violence in his life story were identified, producing marks on his psychic constitution that influenced in his romantic relationship. It is proposed the term psychic imprisonment as a means of understanding the violence perpetrated.

The aim of the proposed research is the investigation of vertical cumulus momentum transport (CMT) in tropical oceanic deep convective cloud systems. Our approach is to use a unique four month three-dimensional cloud resolving model (CRM) simulations of TOGA COARE - a major field experiment over the warm waters of the west Pacific. Emphasis is given to the study of cumulus-scale characteristics of convective momentum transport during the December westerly wind burst and a longer time interval encompassing this specific deep convective event. The analysis of vertical and time-height distributions are evaluated against observations confirming the good quality and reliability of CRM simulations. Good agreement with previous studies is found. The CMT sensitivity to spatial domain size is analyzed using two data sets produced by different horizontal domain sizes, suggesting a nondependency of this field upon the dimension of model spatial domain. The skill of the downgradient mixing-length parameterization is tested, highlighting the tropospheric regions where the momentum fluxes are downgradient and where they are upgradient. The upgradient transports are linked to an unexpected poor correlation between the fields involved in this parameterization, suggesting that formulations of updraft cloud mass flux and entrainment should be revisited. The role of saturated and unsaturated drafts on CMT is investigated in an attempt to reach a better understanding of their underlying physical mechanisms. The unsaturated air via downdrafts, and the saturated downdrafts have an important contribution to CMT, and they must be considered in future CMT and cumulus convection parameterizations. Binning methods are applied to these saturated and unsaturated contributions, through the analysis of buoyancy force and vertical velocity fields, suggesting the presence of internal gravity waves driving the unsaturated air. The cloud pressure-gradient force is also evaluated using the theoretical formula proposed by Gregory et al. (1997), exhibiting a strong correlation to the product mean vertical shear by vertical velocity perturbation, especially in cumulus updrafts during the strong convective event. However, an optimal value for the empirical coefficient c*, which characterizes the role of the cloud pressure-gradient force on the vertical variation of cloud horizontal velocity, is not satisfactorily achieved. Good results are accomplished by Kershaw and Gregory (1997) proposed mass flux approximation to total CMT, which has a fairly good performance in parameterization the total CMT and in identifying the regions of greater variability. Testing this particular approach revealed once again the important role of unsaturated air to the total CMT, which must be considered in future CMT and deep cumulus convection parameterizations.

Texto completoPolyamic acid (PAA) nanostructured materials were successfully produced by electrochemical deposition and electrospinning using polyvinlypyrrolidone (PVP) as supporting polymer. Polyamic acid thin film and nanofibers were deposited directly at the surface of a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) as electro-catalysts for reliable analytical reporting of sulphonamide as contaminants of emerging concern by electrochemical techniques. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to confirm the structural integrity of the PAA electrospun nanofibers compared to the chemical synthesized PAA. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) was used to determine the surface area of the nanofibers. The surface morphology and surface thickness of the polyamic acid (PAA) nanofibers on the screen-printed electrodes was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to study redox behavior of the nanostructured PAA modified screen-printed carbon electrodes. Electrochemical parameters surface concentration, diffusion coefficient, formal potential and peak separation were determined. Three sulphonamides were selected based on the United States of protection agency (US EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) list of emerging contaminants and detected sulphonamides in environmental waters in South Africa and other African regions. The selected sulfonamides were evaluated at the unmodified and modified screen-printed carbon electrodes. The sulphonamides were evaluated in three different supporting electrolytes at pH < 7 and >7 to enhance electrochemical signal reporting. Sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) displayed peaks at 0.80 V vs Ag/AgCl in 0.1 M tris-HCl using square wave voltammetry at the unmodified transducer. At the PAA thin film transducer, SDZ, SMX and SMZ displayed well-defined analytical oxidative peaks at 0.77 V 0.82 V and 0.83 V vs Ag/AgCl respectively. The LOD (n=3) for SDZ was found to be 12.14 ųM with a correlation coefficient of 0.9950. The LOD (n=3) for SMX and SMZ was found to 14.59 ųM (R2 =0.9928) and 10.41 ųM (R2 =0.9963). These sulphonamides were also electro-analytical evaluated at the screen-printed carbon PAA nanofiber modified transducer. SDZ, SMX and SMZ produced well-defined analytical signals at 0.79 V, 0.81 V and 0.78 V vs Ag/AgCl respectively. The determined LOD (n=3) for the individual sulphonamides was 8.26 ųM, 16.59 ųM and 8.81 ųM SDZ, SMX and SMZ respectively. The linearity correlation coefficient (R2) was determined to be 0.9977, 0.9956 and 0.9974 respectively. The efficacy of the proposed nanostructured PAA thin film modified screen-printed carbon sensor was evaluated by performing recovery studies for the selected sulphonamides using square wave voltammetry. Tap water was used to simulate environmental matrix. The recoveries of SDZ with respect to each concentration were 98.84% (RSD 4.98%) to 40.58% (RSD 6.74%). For SMX the recoveries were 154.17% (RSD 11.00%) to 111.03% (RSD 16.80%). The recoveries for SMZ with respect to each concentration were 184% (RSD 8.19%) to 90.26 (RSD 18.26%) indicating the reliability of the analytical results.

Texto completoThe infant-juvenile sexual exploration is a world problem that uses children and adolescents for prostitution and lucrative ends, transforming them in mere goods, suspending the children's dreams and they are forced to turn women preconciously and stealing them the human dignity. This study had as general objective: to understand the meaning of to be adolescent girl and to live in prostitution situation in a neighborhood of the periphery of the city of Fortaleza-CE. The specific objectives are: 1) to investigate the noticed problems, felt and lived by the adolescents, which influence in their lives in the local context in that they are inserted, 2) to identify existent competences for a healthy sexual life promotion, 3) to subsidize educational strategies that empower the adolescents for the health promotion, through the education and prevention. The study had a descriptive character, with qualitative approach and based in presupposed of the interpretative anthropology. The places of the study were: Vicente Pizon neighborhood - known popularly as Serviluz - where the semi-structured interviews were collected, Beira-Mar Avenue and Light of Porto do Mucuripe where accomplished the free observation on the problem in subject. The data collection period corresponded to the months of August to November of 2004. The subjects were eight adolescent girls from thirteen to seventeen years of age that lived the reality of the prostitution and that they agreed with good grace in participating in the study. The data were analyzed starting from the theoretical referential proposed by Bardin thematic analysis - taking as backdrop theoretical knowledge on Interpretative Anthropology, and others already worked in the literature revision. The results revealed that all the informers possessed life histories marked by pain, suffering and losses front to a reality that shelters the poverty of the slum and the luxury of Beira-Mar Avenue at the same time. There isn´t an only cause, but a multiplicity of factors that push and seduce the adolescents for the life in the street as for instance the affected family structure, the mother prostitute, the financial need and on the other hand the friend´s influences, the work in the street and the seduction of the newspaper announcements that seek girls. The loss of the virginity was mentioned as one experiences loving and a ritual of passage for the prostitution. In spite of the society imagines the life in the prostitution it´s not easy and the adolescents are exposed the every violence type, from beatings until the real death tentative for the customers. Allied the financial need, there is a relationship of power and dominance of the customer on the girl that impedes her of practicing the safe sex. Front the life that the informers take they manifested a low self-esteem and they developed solemnity-protection mechanisms. Finally, they are not noticed how pieces of a power and money game that is sex market. I understand that they need to have conscience of themselves how a thinking and active being in the world that they live, so the girls will have conditions of to exercise their citizenship and to ransom the dignity that the life in the prostitution stole them. As instrument for that conscience decision should have an educational and emancipated action on the part of the government and civil society, each one with the portion of social responsibility for the problem.

Texto completoThe analysis of gases and metabolites in arterial and venous blood reflects the condition of homeostasis of the organism and which instantaneous energy demand required, indicating how biological systems behave in front of some physical stress, including the variation of intensity and volume of physical activity performed. Reactions of these compounds maintenance of constant blood pH by neutralization and / or elimination of organic acids derived from the metabolism momentary. It was an objective method, minimally invasive, to evaluate the acid-base resulting from the progressive increase of physical exercise from 100μL of blood capillary. The methodology used was the Balke protocol for cycle ergometer adapted to the operational needs of the equipment Gas Analyzer Radiometer ABL 800. The progressive increase of the load was 50 by 50 Watts until voluntary exhaustion with collecting and analyzing samples of capillary blood. Volunteers are 13 active students (5 women and 8 men) and three amateur athletes UFSCar aged between 20 and 30 years 25 ± 2, and body mass index 24 ± 4. The results are presented in the acid base nomogram Siggaard-Andersen, developed by the pH values between 7.43 ± 0.02 and 7.35 ± 0.04, ABE (Excess Base Real) between 4.16 ± 1 44 and -7.75 ± 3.17 mmol / L, pCO2 between 35.48 ± 2.61 and 37.20 ± 4.67 mmHg and [HCO3-] between 24 and 17 ± 0.6 ± 2.2 mmol / L with analysis of statistical tools ANOVA and Student's t test. The concentration of gases and metabolites present in blood capillary, presents the characteristic behavior expected during graded exercise as the exponential increase of lactate concentration and pH of the linear decay.
