In the closing years of the eighteenth century, France and Britain enjoyed a period of external peace that their scientific communities put to good use by finding an objective common to the leading academic institutions: the Académie royale des sciences in France, and the Royal Society in England. This was not an entirely new concept; the novelty was that the objective would be brought about by teams from each side working outside their own borders. It was part of both nations' long-running search for a means of establishing longitudes on land and at sea. The specific objective, however, was c

The paper discusses the presence of Polish women at the Académie Julian, a private Parisian art school which offered the highest level of teaching, and competed with the state-owned École de beaux-arts. Its greatest popularity with female students from outside France occurred at a time when admission to state universities was forbidden to women, i.e. before 1904. Founded by Rodolphe Julian (1839–1907) in 1868, the school operated in several districts of Paris for the next century. Its longest-running atelier was located at 5 rue de Berri. Harmonious relations and scientific exchange between Britain and France in the eighteenth century were undermined by a succession of wars. Nevertheless, The Royal Society and the Paris Academy of Sciences succeeded in a fairly consistent exchange of scientific news and publications, with intermittent visits by scientists. Joseph Banks PRS claimed that the sciences were never at war. Election to honorary membership of the other society also helped strengthen relationships. A proposal for cooperation in the reform of weights and measures was halted in 1791 by political events in France.

In the course of this and several subsequent visits to France, Blagden became especially intimate with the chemist Claude-Louis Berthollet. His correspondence, now in the Royal Society, is a

While Borel and his colleagues were genuine members of the Resistance, and those who arrested them were full participants in a brutal occupation, both sides respected a bargain, of no small importance to the Vichy regime, that allowed the university to pur

AbstractThis article argues that the early nineteenth century was a critical period in the development of operatic aesthetics in France: fuelled by post-Revolutionary notions about theatre's importance in processes of nation-building, the Opéra sought to strengthen its reputation as the ‘Académie that unites all the arts’. The intertwinement of this aesthetic and political aim is conspicuous in the production of Jean-François Le Sueur's Ossian ou les bardes (1804), loosely based on James Macpherson's Ossianic ‘translations’. This essay considers an early eighteenth-century quarrel about the geographical dimensions of Paris and London. The dispute involved representatives of the Académie Royale des Sciences in Paris and the Royal Society in London. The three participants—Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726), Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan (1678–1771) and Peter Davall (?–1763)—were French, the first two resident in Paris, the third an exiled Huguenot based in London. Abstract Jean-Nicolas Marjolin was born in Ray-sur-Saone, in eastern France, in 1780. His education was sponsored by his mother as his father had died when he was 1 year old, leaving them impoverished. He studied Medicine at The Commercy Hospital, north-eastern France, before he left for Hôtel-Dieu hospital in Paris where he met Guillaume Dupuytren, who recruited him to the ‘Societe Anatomique’, a society created to promote the study of clinical anatomy.
