Navajo school students, it is believed, underachieve at school in terms of school attendance, dropout rates, and standardized performance tests. Among the many reasons proposed to explain the persistent school underachievement is that school culture is largely based on individualism, interpersonal competition, and other Western norms and values. The attribution model of achievement motivation has been applied to academic achievement as a way of understanding underachievement and as a basis for developing intervention programs. The present study investigated the effects of different goal orientations on motivation after failure. A 2 goals (mastery vs. performance) x 2 regulatory focuses (approach vs. avoidance) experimental design was adopted. Junior secondary students (N = 173) voluntarily attended a prefix learning class. They were randomly assigned one of the four conditions and finished some computerized tasks.
