The stoichiometric Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) thermite reaction involving magnesium oxide (MgO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and boron oxide (B2O3) forms titanium diboride (TiB2) and MgO as final products. The rate of dissolution increases with calcination temperature, calcination time, and leach temperature. The densities and equilibrium solubilities of oxygen were determined in aqueous sulphuric acid containing different amounts of dissolved zinc and ferric sulphate at conditions that simulated the conditions used for pressure leaching of zinc sulphide ores. A two-stage absorption-desorption process was used in the determination of the oxygen solubilities. Titanium diboride was produced both by volume combustion synthesis (VCS) and by mechanochemical synthesis through the reaction of TiO2, B2O3 and metallic Mg. Reaction products were expected to be composed of TiB2 and MgO. However, side products such as Mg2TiO4, Mg3B2O6, MgB2 and TiN were also present in the products obtained by volume combustion synthesis. Formation of TiN could be prevented by conducting the volume combustion synthesis under argon atmosphere. Mg2TiO4 did not form when 40% excess Mg was used. This research led to the discovery of one of the best preserved remnants of the Earth's surficial environment 3.47 billion years ago. These ancient volcanic and sedimentary rocks contain original minerals and textures that are rare in rocks of this age. The research concentrated on chemical analysis of volcanic rocks to differentiate secondary alteration from the primary magmatic signature. This study contributes to our understanding of melting processes and geochemical reservoirs in the early Earth, which is vital for forward modelling of Earth's geodynamic evolution.
