Kroz odvijanje procesa vlasničke, organizaciono-upravljačke i finansijske transformacije, hotelsko-turistička privreda nadalje će ostvarivati povoljniji  kvalitet u ekonomiji.
In the wide area of the montenegrain coast, there are objects foreseen for recreation, nauticsm, commune activities and others, about which there will be said in the chapter. It was very difficult to get to any information about some of those objects, so that they will be analysed on a more general level, like the dwelling houses, temporary objects, sports grounds, as well as social and private institutions.

Resumen
The aim of the study was to examine what the economic and touristic impacts of the sports event - UEFA EURO 2012 - will have on Polish regions. The essay was limited to some specific regions in Poland. Those regions were Gniewino, Malbork, Kalisz, Legionowo, Pommerian Province, Cracow, Olsztyn and Zamosc. The Football Championships that will be held in 2012 are dependent of the big amount of football fans that will came and spend their money in Polish regions. Thanks to the increased consumption this creates demand for local services and products. The generator of spending is the tourism multiplier that is the main link to the touristic expenditure. The multiplier is a catalyst of the region that creates jobs, growing yield, promotion of the region and improvement of its infrastructure and leisure facilities. This is considered as an advantage from an economical and touristic point of view. The economical and tourstic benefits are different for every mentioned region in the study because of their location and link to the UEFA EURO 2012. This study shows only how the different eight regions prepare for the UEFA EURO 2012 and what they think that the negative and positive economical and touristic impacts will gain them. The study gives only a short brief of the football event of what can happen.

Resumen
The dissertation “Informal Economic Activities” takes a comprehensive approach to the informal economy by studying traditional shadow economic activities, household DIY activities, and the smuggling of illegal and legal goods. Chapter 2 analyzes shadow economic and DIY activities and presents a dual estimation for the development of both types of informal economic activities in Germany from 1970 to 2005. It also considers the impact of German reunification on shadow economic and DIY activities and employs a proper estimate of domestic currency in circulation within Germany as an indicator variable for the shadow economy. Chapter 3 studies an informal economic activity that has attracted much attention recently: legal goods smuggling, or the illegal trade of otherwise legal goods. The main channel of this type of smuggling is the falsification of trade documents. By reporting false amounts of exports and/or imports to authorities smugglers, or trade misinvoicers, seek to avoid paying taxes and/or tariffs. Chapter 4 widens the analysis of smuggling to the smuggling of illegal goods and studies the smuggling of legal and illegal goods across the U.S.-Mexico border in order to improve the understanding of illegal trade. Studying the U.S.-Mexican case is particularly interesting as most illegal drugs and immigrants enter the United States via the Mexican border. The empirical analyses in the dissertation “Informal Economic Activities” are based on structural equation models (SEMs). The results demonstrate that the informal economy is significant and that growth of the informal economy is not exclusive to developing countries, although it is a more serious problem in these countries. Moreover, although the informal economy covers a wide range of rather diverse economic activities, the dissertation works out that a few similarities exist. These are important, especially for policymakers, in first understanding what drives informal economic activities and second designing appropriate policies to deter them.

Resumen
Historical accounts of the Iberian incursion into the Andes indicate that Spaniards were amazed by the sophisticated roads and waystations (tambos) they encountered across Andean territory. During and after the Iberian conquest, indigenous and Spanish armies constantly burned tambos for strategic reasons, in order to slow the movement of enemy troops. Despite this practice, tambos were one of the few institutions that continued during the colonial  period. The Spanish rapidly recognized that tambos were beneficial for their economy, specifically markets and mining exploitation that required the movement of people, things, and animals across the Andean region. Consequently, during the early colonial period, Iberians dictated laws promoting the smooth functioning of tambos as a way of regulating the practices occurring in them; transforming tambos into a new colonial institution. In this article, I call attention to the transformation of tambos from a pre-Hispanic to a colonial institution as well as the colonial desire to control indigenous behavior in the new Andean society. I specially focus on the colonial fixation over the bodies of indigenous women, illustrating some aspects of the ideology of power exerted over indigenous communities. Finally, I discuss the importance of archaeology to better understand the transformation of tambos from the pre-Hispanic to the colonial period.

Murphy, Sheilagh C. "Valuing traditional activities in the northern native economy : the case of Old Crow, Yukon Territory". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26575.

Texto completo
Resumen
The purpose of the research is to develop a widely acceptable and more holistic method for valuing traditional activities in a northern native community. It does this by extending contemporary valuation methods to include native categories and perceptions of natural resources, both past and present. The community of Old Crow, Yukon Territory is used as the field site because it is a relatively stable community, closely linked to the land, and one for which historical material is available. Any assessment of a contemporary native community, its people, and their relationships to the land and its bounty would not be complete without an examination of their history. Thus, the thesis recounts the history of the Kutchin Indians of Old Crow. By reviewing past situations, traditions and cultural beliefs, the present day place of the land and its resources in the lives of the Old Crow people is revealed. Contemporary valuation methods are defined as those which emphasize valuing resources numerically using a specific type of quantitative information. The more holistic method, on the other hand, includes the examination of the 'value'1 assigned traditional activities by the people themselves as exemplified through past and present situations. The ultimate goal of this work is to show that static quantitative analyses must be balanced with research into the more social side of native activities if their true value is to be found. The thesis shows that contemporary valuation methods continually underestimate the 'value' of production from the land because they are usually limited in time and scope, and fail to deal with the non-market 'values' the land and its bountry hold for native northerners. It is discovered that comparing data collected at different points in time is a very effective means of precipitating out those 'values' which influence native people in making choices about the pursuit of traditional activities in the north. Using this method the land and its resources as perceived by the Old Crow people are shown to still hold a paramount place in their day to day lives. As with other northern native groups, even though material opportunities and hunting strategies have changed, the people continue to value their traditional land and life for a variety of reasons. While the thesis identifies the various 'values' associated with productive activities in Old Crow, it does not develop a scheme that quantifies or ranks the relative worth of these 'values'. It discusses the merit of the concept in the context of valuing activities in the traditional economy of the north, and concludes that much research is still required in this area.

Coronel, Eric G. "Geochemical Analysis of Ancient Activities at Two Plazas in Cobá, Mexico". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2704.

Texto completo
Resumen
Two plazas at Cobá, Mexico, may have been the place of market activity during the classic Maya period. The intense decomposition in the warm, moist soils of the Yucatan Peninsula precludes the identification of organic artifacts in archaeological contexts, but phosphorus and trace elements accumulation in soils may provide evidence of marketing activities. The spatial patterns of P and trace element concentrations were used to elucidate the types of ancient Maya activities that took place in those plazas. Phosphorus concentrations are highly correlated (p-value <0.01) with Fe, Mn, and Zn levels in both Plaza B and D. Although the soil geochemistry of Plaza B does not show a marketplace pattern in comparison with previous studies, the elemental concentrations and distributions within Plaza D join other lines of evidence to support the premise that marketplace activities took place at that location. Soil samples were analyzed using DTPA extraction, Mehlich II, Olsen, and Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (PXRF). Experiments were performed to study the suitability of PXRF for field studies. Aspects that were studied include granule size, soil moisture content, protective plastic films that could interfere with the X-Ray signal when placing the samples on top of the analyzer, and a comparison of certified soil standards to the PXRF elemental concentration readings. The results suggest that a field laboratory could be set up to air-dry and sieve soil samples to a minimum mesh size of #10 (> 2 mm).

Baharom, S. "Designing mobile learning activities in the Malaysian HE context : a social constructivist approach". Thesis, University of Salford, 2013. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/28385/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The introduction of mobile learning in higher education institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia is an instinctive course of action in response to the high increase in rates of mobile phone ownership amongst higher education (HE) students. Mobile learning encapsulates learning opportunities undertaken with the usage of the students’ mobile phones. This study aims to explore how mobile learning activities, developed using social constructivist learning principles, can support undergraduate students learning in the context of the study. It identifies the learning opportunities that the different mobile learning activities provide as well as exploring issues and challenges in implementing these mobile learning activities. The results derived from this research are used to inform the development of pedagogical design guidelines for engaging Malaysian HE students via mobile learning activities to support a specific course. As depicted by interpretive paradigm upon which this study is founded, the students’ voices are emphasised as it is justified that the students’ participation is essential to move the technology in directions that they prefer. The methodology is design-based research (DBR) which emphasises the need for cyclic intervention and analysis as part of the research process. Hence, there were two stages of data collection which were designed to explore the students’ perspective on the mobile learning activities. The methods of data collection include a questionnaire (145), students’ blog posts (145) and online interviews (9). The study was implemented with two cohorts of student teachers over a period of two years. The findings of this study indicate that Malaysian HE students are prepared to accept mobile learning to support their study. However, educators must also be wary of issues such as the students’ familiarity in using the selected mobile application. There are several types of mobile learning activities which could be offered namely; contextual, reflective, collaborative, multiple-medium, communication and learning-management. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing a) conceptual benchmarks for future studies in the area of mobile learning and learning design, b) a rich insight into the mobile learning development in Malaysian HEIs, c) social constructivist pedagogical guideline considerations, and d) tactical advice for HE practitioners in considering mobile learning.

Williams, Helen Sarah. "Scotland's regional print economy in the nineteenth century". Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2018. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/1255509.

Texto completo
Resumen
Printing has been one of Scotland's most significant industries since it was introduced over 500 years ago but remained for much of the period, a local industry. The Scottish publishing and printing industries in the nineteenth century left many documentary traces, but most research has concentrated on large urban centres such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, with regional centres of print production all but ignored. In the nineteenth century, these local print economies served the business, administrative, political and leisure needs of an increasingly urbanised Scotland. My research is focused on the operation of the support structures and networks which developed among operative printers in Scotland's regional print centres from around 1830 to the end of the nineteenth century. As a case study I have selected the Royal Burgh of Dumfries, the most important market town in south-west Scotland, which was also a stop on the route between central Scotland and the industrial centres of Lancashire, and further south to London. A local printing industry developed during the eighteenth century, and by 1830 Dumfries was the home of a range of businesses in the printing and allied trades. The examination of the local print economy investigates the businesses and organisations engaged in print production and distribution in the local area, the technologies which were in use, and the material record of the town. The individual 'print trade lives' are considered in some detail, looking at the range and variety of career patterns in the industry. The options for a larger study of print networks based on trade records are also considered. Sources for the study include local and regional trade society records, business records, trade journals and other publications, and contemporary (mainly local) newspapers. It also draws on technological manuals and other secondary material in Edinburgh Napier University's Edward Clark Collection.

The paper makes an empirical analysis of the activities of tourism in CearÃ. The objective was to scale the activities of this segment in the region from about occupations and labor income available to official microdata obtained along the IPECE, IBGE and Ministry of Tourism for the years 1995 to 2012. The results were analyzed from the following data: national and international tourism demand, tourism revenue direct income generated and employment generated by the sector. It was found that the domestic demand is most responsible for generating tourist revenue in the state and within the tourism sector employing most sectors are housing and feeding. Finally, it was found that the evolution of tourist activity takes place along with the evolution of the GDP of the State of Cearà and the tourism sector contributes to a dispersion of regional income, since tourism is concentrated not only in the capital but also in several municipalities in the state.

Chirambwi, Kudakwashe. "The political economy of policing in Zimbabwe: Changing roles, practice and identities in relationship to peace, security and development". Thesis, University of Bradford, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/17225.

Texto completo
Resumen
ABSTRACT: This thesis examines policing within the context of security and development, with particular reference to ways in which the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) operates in the wider political economy of Zimbabwean state in response to decades of financial crisis. Guided by the social constructionist philosophy and structural political economy analysis, the case study demonstrates that, through a range of commercial activities, the ZRP has been able to shift police preoccupation from ‘what is routinely important’ to ‘what works’ as part of resilience and adaptability in one of the world’s distorted economies. In cases where the police lack sufficient budget support from the government they recalibrate into self-organized systems and devise ways in which they raise the much needed revenue for policing. Using interpretive content analysis for secondary data and thematic analysis for in-depth interviews, the other finding relates to the ways in which the ZRP deploys neoliberal registers of ‘sustainable development’ and economic nationalist discourses to legitimise its involvement in commercial activities in farms, mines, tourism and social welfare businesses. Commercial activities involve distribution of wealth, power and interests. As such, what started off as productive entrepreneurship to ‘make ends meet’ slipped into unproductive and destructive entrepreneurship. The latter has made the police institution gets to a breakdown as different categories of officers split into different commercial units as they compete for access and control. To date, there is little literature that foregrounds the experiences and views of the police officers on the political economy of policing and it is to this literature this thesis primarily contributes. Inadvertently, as the ZRP responds to the economic crisis, it sometimes uses violence against citizens. The violence is sometimes quite targeted and deliberate as the police use metal spiked bars to clampdown motorists in demand of bribe money. The findings suggest that the police operating in a context of budget cuts are highly unlikely to be people-oriented.

Resumen
Problem: What are the most critical activities for process industry? Whether general view of impact of these value chain activities on product performance (quality, cost and innovation) applied to process industry? How do those activities impact to product performances? If they cannot affect product performance, what could be the reason behind it?   Purpose: This paper aims to conclude general view of impact of value chain activities on product performances (quality, cost and innovation). Accordingly we would create a conceptual model. And then test whether this model applies for process industry and further more figure out the reason behind through case study.   Methodology: In this paper, qualitative research is our approach. We choose single case study as research strategy and conduct three interviews. Documentation and interview data are collected and analyzed to provide theoretical framework and empirical evidence for the whole paper.     Result: Based on case study, and previous work, the model concerning impact of major activities for process industry (Marketing sales, Human Resource and Supplier management) on product performances (Quality, Cost and Innovation) is derived. This model contains answers to nine hypotheses assumed in theoretical part, giving reader a new and easy way to understand process industry.        Conclusions: Distinguished from other industry, process industry with its own unique characteristics does not lend support to all nine hypotheses. Fundamental analysis proved that some assumptions do not establish for process industry while the others may have more significant relationships. To be specific, there exists strong impact of human resource on product quality and cost, supplier management on product cost and also marketing and sales on product quality. But, to our surprise, the other assumed relationships are not that significant while product innovation has adverse affect on marketing and sales.

Mosweu, B. Abel. "Indawo yami : a catalyst for quality open space in low cost housing communities". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/45308.

Texto completo
Resumen
In South African Townships, socio economic activities of the second economy such as informal trading typically manifest themselves in low quality, left over open spaces along roadsides and transport interchanges. These left over spaces are characteristic of townships and especially low cost housing and Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) communities, due to the emphasis placed on the dwelling units with little regard for the quality of open space. These environments are, over-scaled and not suited to human scale and although used for informal trading, they are not conducive to human or environmental well-being. An entrance precinct with such left over spaces in Olievenhoubosch Township, Centurion, is selected to test the hypothesis of an informal market as a catalyst for quality open space that considers human scale and enables the socio-economic functions of the community. The research starts off by establishing guidelines firstly for quality open space; secondly for human scale and thirdly for socio economic functions. These guidelines are applied at framework level looking at the entire precinct, including an informal market, stream corridor and taxi rank. At masterplan level, the focus is on the informal market. To avoid a merely functional response, the market approach is divided into two aspects, the market development and the spatial or experiential development aspect. These are informed by the established theoretical guidelines, case studies and existing activities and uses onsite. An overarching concept “Indawo Yami” meaning “my place”, ties the two aspects together while expressing the unique character of the community. The concept is born out of the vision of the market as a multifunctional community space that expresses the unique character of the community. The sketchplan proposal suggests that human and environmental well-being could be prime objectives of open spaces in townships all over South Africa.

Abela, Joan Angela. "The impact of the arrival of the Knights of St John on the commercial economy of Malta 1530-1565". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/8182.

Texto completo
Resumen
Much has been written about various aspects of the long presence of the Knights of the Order St John on the island of Malta. Nonetheless, throughout this literature there is one noticeable omission - a study of the commercial development of the harbour area during the first decades of the Order’s rule. Despite Malta’s small size, the presence of the Order of St John (1530 -1798) ensured an inflow of foreign resources which eventually permitted very dense human settlement and an international projection beyond the island’s shores which was largely disproportionate to what would normally have occurred in such a small and sterile island. The maritime nature of the Order and the heavy dependence on imports hastened the creation of an efficient maritime communication system. The development of all these economic activities resulted in a prime economic means of generating wealth and served as a pull factor to a large number of enterprising individuals, both local and foreign. Early modern Hospitaller Malta eventually saw the consolidation of an enterprising business class, which, out of sheer necessity, grew accustomed to operating well beyond its narrow confines. In turn, this contributed to the island becoming more open to connectivity with the outside world. Hence, the main aim of this thesis is to explore in detail various economic activities taking place in Malta during this particular period which spans from 1530 to 1565. The year 1565 has been chosen as a marker since during this year there was a break in the normal chain of events due to the turmoil created by the Great Siege. In order to reach this goal the practical functioning of commerce with its agreements and disputes, its currencies, its trading posts and its nodal points shall be analyzed. Furthermore, this thesis strives to show how notarial evidence, together with that derived from records of various tribunals set up on the island at the time, supplement each other and help to fill in gaps. While discussing different methodological approaches to the study of the Mediterranean, the first chapter of this study shall also assess Malta’s place within the wider Mediterranean historiographical framework. It shall also trace the development of Maltese historiography and its contribution to the study of legal, economic and social issues relating to the sixteenth century. Furthermore, this study shall place the various series of primary sources used for its compilation in their proper context, thus allowing the reader to evaluate better the significance of the information provided. The second chapter shall evaluate how the arrival of the Order provided for the setting up of new institutions and for the promulgation of new laws in order to consolidate its authority over the island despite repeated promises to respect and honour ancient rights and privileges. The following three chapters shall each be dedicated to a particular case study which will try to address specific topics that have been largely neglected in Maltese historiography. Thus, starting with an analysis of the grain trade, which was of the utmost importance for a sterile island with an ever-increasing population, it will be followed by another case study which seeks to evaluate the role of women, their legal persona and how this affected their contribution to the island’s economic activities. The final chapter will try to establish whether there were any commercial links between Malta, often described as the frontier and bulwark of Christianity, and its neighbouring Ottoman North African territories. If such trade existed, how did merchants, both Christian and Muslim, manage to overcome religious antagonism which should have inhibited the easy flow of trade? The objective of this study shall therefore be to shed much-needed light on economic activities taking place in and around the harbour area during a largely unexplored period in Maltese history. Moreover, it shall seek to provide a better understanding of Mediterranean commercial relations since the Maltese harbour was a point of intersection not only for people of different nationalities, but even for people of different faiths, such as Muslims, Jews and Christians of different denominations. All had one common goal which unified them, that is, trading and making profit out of it.

Kim, Hyung Hoon. "The influence of entrepreneurial activities on teaching at Universities in the United States". Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/24821.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study is to investigate the influence of entrepreneurial activities on teaching at universities. Specifically, the study focuses on entrepreneurial activities' effect on professors' time allocation. The dataset analyzed was constructed from the survey conducted by University of Illinois at Chicago in 1998. The sample was drawn from American academic professional associations' members of the four fields: experimental biology, physics, mathematics, and sociology. Based on the data of 133 professors, the study shows that professors with paid consulting work tend to spend less time in teaching when research activities are controlled. Insignificant are the other variables about entrepreneurial activities: patent application, industry funding, and research collaboration with industry. Also, more research time is likely to result in less teaching time. Insignificant are the other research-related variables: research funding at large and collaborative research in general. In terms of personal and institutional conditions, assistant professors tend to invest more time in teaching than senior professors, but they are likely to reduce more time on teaching than their senior counterparts for increasing research time. Finally, biology and sociology professors tend to allocate less time to teaching than physics and mathematics professors. In a word, entrepreneurial activities and research tend to conflict with teaching at the level of individual professors' time allocation.

Resumen
As customers become more and more aware of the threats and limits of the current economic system, joined with the pressure of environmental policies, companies are pressured to rethink their offerings, processes, and business models in order to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. This transition requires significant changes in habits and behaviors, but simultaneously it offers opportunities for innovation. In this regard, business model innovation plays an essential role in enabling this transition via circular business models that close the loop. For the successful development, implementation, and adoption of new business models, a depth understanding of customers' needs is fundamental. However, little is known about the customer perceptions, motivations, and willingness to participate in circular economy. To address this gap, the study explores the transition to circular economy from the customers' perspective by employing a qualitative single case study bounded to the furniture retail company, IKEA, specifically the IKEA Second-Hand pilot store in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Through in-person interviews, observations, and a questionnaire, data from customers donating their used furniture to the recycling mall ReTuna, people discarding furniture at the recycling station, and people selling and giving away their used furniture via the social media platform Facebook, was captured to explore the customer experience in the after-use phase of furniture. Findings of the study present opportunities for the case company to strengthen its product recovery strategies.

Resumen
Background: There are personal factors and environmental factors playing impacts on the participation of children with developmental disabilities in China. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the participation of children with developmental disabilities in outside home activities compared to typically developing children. Method: A quantitative cross-sectional method was used in this study. Participants were children with developmental disabilities (autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities) and typically developing children between the age of 5 to 13. An instrument called ‘Picture My Participation’ (Simplified Chinese version) was used for data collection. Results: In general, typically developing children attended more frequently and felt more involved than children with developmental disabilities in outside home activities. There were many similarities in attendance between the two groups of children. They both attended more frequently in formal learning at school, shopping and playing with others, and less frequently in spiritual activities, social activities, and trips. Some differences were found in the activities with lower levels of involvement. Apart from the spiritual activity with the lowest mean score of involvement in both groups, typically developing children felt less involved in organized leisure and trips. However, children with developmental disabilities had lower levels of involvement in health center visits and social activities. There was no significant association between age, gender, place of residence, and participation in neither the attendance nor involvement aspect. Conclusion: Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors play essential parts in the participation of children with developmental disabilities. More support should be provided to children with DD.

Resumen

A product often consists for the most part of purchased materials and to reduce the total cost of production, therefore, companies often focus on reducing their purchase prices. Pushing supplier prices in this way is a popular way to improve the company's short-term profits.

Ericsson negotiates annually with its suppliers to reduce their purchase prices, which is considered to reduce purchasing costs and thus the production costs. This is achieved by the sourcing function in a process known as the VPA process. The VPA process requires information from the local supply functions, which, however, has no documented approach for these activities. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to create a support processes to sourcing VPA process. We have also from a theoretical approach critically reviewed the existing process.

What we found is that Ericsson's approach could be sub optimized, focusing on achieving internal goals within the function creates obstacles for other functions. Often, if not always, each function focuses on its own goals and do not have a holistic view on organizational performance. This means that the organization as a whole may suffer when instead of optimizing process output, local optimization leads to total sub optimization.

To prevent sub optimization, functions needs to create an understanding of the other functions goals, communication between the functions are therefore of critical nature. However, this is not enough, to reduce the focus on goals within functions and instead focus on process goals requires that senior management will create this opportunity.

In this dissertation the question of why people want to stay in the county-side has been analysed from an economic-historic perspective. The specific research question has been: Using which formal economic means of sustenance could those who remained in Ängersjö parish ensure their survival in the years 1950 to 1990? A number of different types of sources have been used, including income tax registers, data on migration, agricultural statistics, parish registers, interviews, and printed public statistics. The population of Ängersjö parish decreased through the entire period of investigation. In the early 1950s the population pyramid in Ängersjö resembled Sweden’s quite considerably. After this point, the tendencies towards depopulation grew stronger. By the early 1990s, the population had returned to the levels of the early 1800s, i.e. before the forest became valuable. This time, however, the proportion of older inhabitants was much larger. Most of the remaining households supported themselves through wage labour in the forestry sector, which essentially was a male preoccupation. At the margin, supplementary incomes, such as the renting of cottages and capital revenues, could add to household earnings, and contributions by women probably played an important part in that context. In addition, informal economic activities, such as berry-picking and the exchange of labour, could expand the means of support by a maximum of 20 percent. In spite of all these efforts, most of the remaining households earned less than an average Swedish industrial worker. The income differences could to some degree be compensated by lower housing and living costs, but many households probably enjoyed a lower material standard of living. Demonstrably, most of the remaining inhabitants of Ängersjö were willing to pay the economic price associated with the “feelings of freedom” or the upkeep of their ancestral home of which many inhabitants spoke.

The purpose of this thesis is to understand how states have weakened in their approach to regulating the economic activities of transnational corporations. This study is based on the theory of law as set out by American realists and carried out by the critical legal studies movement focused on the indeterminacy of law. This is the theoretical basis on which an internal criticism of private and public international law concerning the states’ ability to promote the regulation of economic activities of transnational corporations is developed. Following that, an external criticism of international law is formulated from the perspective of other social sciences, mainly that of political economy, in interaction with legal science to explain the indeterminacy of international law in regulating the economic activities of transnational corporations

Together with increased economic and political openness, a location’s or territory’s attractiveness and competitiveness for foreign direct investment (FDI) are key elements for intensifying investment and trade flows. For countries, especially those without a national market of significant scale, establishing a way to identify and analyse priorities for economic development is fundamental. This research defines a general analytical framework applicable to the concepts of attractiveness and competitiveness, and, building on this framework, develops a specific model that could assist key institutions as to identify their preferred orientations in the specific context of an economy considered as a small open mature economy (SOME), in particular, Luxembourg. This research will lead to the definition of a prospective structured approach by:- providing a list of factors which potentially influence the competitiveness and attractiveness of SOMEs; this list having been validated with respect to Luxembourgby national decision makers;- establishing a method for analysing the current situation regarding attractiveness and competitiveness in Luxembourg; and- identifying priority sectors for FDI that could be targeted in a specific location/territory of reference such as Luxembourg

In a growing number of countries diplomatic systems are being overhauled so that the commercial activities of diplomatic services have been centralised, the commercial activities of diplomats have been extended, and business interests have been formally integrated within diplomatic systems. These changes result directly from the tendency of governments to reorganise, and in many cases merge, their trade and foreign ministries, as well as the strategy of building formal business–government links within diplomatic institutions. While none of these features is unfamiliar to previous diplomatic systems, what is exceptional is the relative neglect of the commercial aspects of diplomacy within diplomatic studies. This lack of attention to the commercial and business elements of diplomacy in traditional theories of diplomacy means that we find ourselves trying to analyse contemporary changes to diplomatic organisation and practice without a suitable conceptual and analytical framework. Highlighting the significance of a political economy approach to diplomacy, and also engaging with orthodox approaches to diplomacy, this article begins to develop some analytical and conceptual tools to better identify, explain and understand changes in diplomatic systems as well as the increased influence of private interests in diplomatic practice now under way.

Taiwan’s recreational industry has been blooming since 2004. Surrounded by ocean and rich in marine natural resources, Taiwan has the potential to become a vacation hot spot for international travelers. For island countries in tropical regions, recreational activities in open water have already become one of the major choices made by tourists. The marketing and promotion of recreational water tourism have also been listed as a key issue for the development of tourism economy in island countries. The aim of this paper is to explore the history and current status of SCUBA diving activities, and its relation to business industry, along with possible directions for future development. The method of this research is a qualitative research method called “in-depth interview”, using a standardized semi-open interview(half-structured style). Interviewees in related fields such as divers, business owners, experts, scholars, and of-ficials are invited for a talk. The content of the interviews are then transcribed into text and coded for evaluation. Common findings can be divided into five topics: the impact and development of SCUBA diving industry, growth of SCUBA diving tourism, policies for conservation in diving tourism, policies for diving education in tourism industry, and policies for conservation in diving tourism industry. This research can be used as a reference for the government, academic fields, and related diving institutes in planning strategies for future development of recreational SCUBA diving activity and industry. Keywords:SCUBA diving, recreational diving, SCUBA diving history, industrial economy, marine eco-system

The terms tastu lumah and mai tastu lumah is an inner cultural concept for Bunun people which refers to people lives in the same specific house, and maintains the economy in the community. 2) Bunun people’s social unit of production adapts ro the transformation of living spaces, land tenure and agricultural policy in the different period. Overall, the spaces, social relationships and economic activities interact with each other dynamically. The household is constantly strengthened by eating together “tastu banning”, participating in the family and clan union, and collective labor. The practice of reciprocity reinforces the families and clan’s members during economic activities.

When Muslim migrant workers from Indonesia come to work in Taiwan, the first challenge they encounter with realizing religious practices is how to maintain a religious life similar to that in their homeland given the lack of distribution channels and product availability of hijabs in Taiwan as well as their Taiwanese employer’s passive attitude towards lending a hand. Consequently, in order to carry on their religious practices, Indonesian Muslim migrant workers reach out to trustworthy communities and channels to replenish their Islamic supplies. Among them, some migrant workers – with or without permission from their employers – have joined the business of selling hijabs and will be referred to as “moonlighting migrant workers” in this study. The moonlighting migrant collect non-operating income by selling hijabs; in the legal aspect, these beyond-the-permit commercial activities are a violation to the Taiwanese law; in the moral aspect, selling religious articles outside of Indonesia at higher prices warrants the controversy of exploiting fellow compatriots. However, this study has concluded that the main products sold by these moonlighting migrant workers are those pertaining to realizing religious practices of the customers as well as the moonlighting migrant workers themselves. Moreover, the execution of such economic activities incorporates personal interest, public benefits, and all the moral and economic principles of the Islamic doctrine. Hence, there is no worry for the aforementioned issues. This study aims to explore how the moonlighting migrant workers’ community resources, labor contents, labor conditions, and labor relations affect their entrepreneurship and business operation; the study also discusses how moonlighting migrant workers resort to implicit and explicit strategies at their work place – their employer’s home – to negotiate with their employer so as to advance their moonlighting business. Meanwhile, the study also offers an explanation to how these economic strategies centered around religious practice and mutual help between Indonesians not only benefit the moonlighting migrant workers themselves but also advance the interests of their customers as well as other competitors who are also moonlighting migrant workers; by doing so, the study hopes to illustrate the spirit of mutual help and moral economy demonstrated in the economic activities of Indonesian Muslim migrant workers selling hijab in Taiwan.

Resumen
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, School of Social Sciences (Development Studies Programme), University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Johannesburg, 2018.
Cameroon’s modern economy developed around a satellite-metropolis plantation dynamic within which successive European colonial masters and later, African-led governments, promoted monocrop commodity production along coastal areas for the benefit of Europe. The federating organisations employed to structure production were a combination of plantations, agriculture development zones and especially cooperatives. The period of government-controlled cooperatives was characterised by a too-big-to-fail approach; the State intervened directly in cooperatives’ affairs and managed their cashflow through the National Produce Marketing Board. Following a structural adjustment plan in the 1990s, the Cameroon State divested its interest in cooperatives and transitioned the agrarian system into a borderless, global market within a neoliberal competition state dynamic. This study investigated the impact of the Cameroonian State’s post-structural adjustment neoliberal agrarian system reforms on coffee cooperatives’ activities and market orientation. This was done through the prism of the two biggest coffee cooperatives in Cameroon, i.e. the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of the West (UCCAO) and the North West Cooperative Association (NWCA). The study employed an interpretivist approach, and the extended case methodology was used to gather data. Data gathering instruments included interviews, questionnaires, participant observation, archival material and photos. Respondents were top managers of both cooperatives plus forty coffee growers. The study revealed three key findings. Firstly, the Cameroon State’s support to coffee cooperatives in the free market era is characterised by a preponderance of disparate programmes which appear to be done more for optics rather than actually providing the robust support that is needed to help producer organisations succeed. Some development experts (Chang, 2001; Gereffi, 1995; Stiglitz, 2008) are unanimous that in underdeveloped countries with threadbare infrastructure, the state has a key role to play in providing the infrastructure, communications networks, access to finance and other support necessary to develop efficient value chains that can take commodities to world markets on a consistent and reliable basis. Secondly, Cameroon’s coffee Cooperatives have made only timid and insufficient efforts to adjust to the deeply globalised free market context into which they were suddenly ushered in the 1990s after a half a century of operating as quasi parastatals. Their market orientation shows a business-as-usual approach which is ultimately self-defeating as it stops them from leveraging the opportunities offered by free market globalism. Thirdly, conclusive data from around the world reveals that the more successful modern-day cooperatives are those ones that locate themselves in parallel cooperative market economies based on solidarity, democracy and cooperation among cooperatives rather than in traditional capitalistic value chains (Wright, 2011). It is this pathway that Cameroonian cooperatives need to follow if they wish to succeed in the age of globalism.

With 316 valid questionnaires, this research process utilizes descriptive statistics, factor analysis, reliability analysis, structure equation model and ordered probit model. We can discern two dimensions in the category of rural B&B experience, that is, basic experience and rural activity economic experience. We find that the “special landscape” of the basic rural B&B experience, and the experience about “education of rural life”, “”education of rural ecology” and “leisure of rural ecology” in rural activity economic experience get the highest evaluation. Both dimensions positively affect satisfaction of travelers, especially the basic experience dimension. Such two dimensions do not affect loyalty directly, but degree of satisfaction does indirectly. Degree of satisfaction gives high effect upon loyalty positively, and the perceived value of worth of rural B&B is mainly affected by satisfaction and personal average expenditure.

Tamukamoyo, Hamadziripi. "Survival in a collapsing economy: a case study of informal trading at a Zimbabwean flea market". Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/8166.

Texto completo
Resumen
Abstract The central concern of this study is the nature of informal economic activities among urban traders in Harare, Zimbabwe. The study focuses on a particular flea market and describes the precarious lives of a sample of informal traders. It is shown that, as through much of Africa, the market is a social as well as an economic nexus. It is not only the site of economic production and exchange constituting the survivalist activities that are increasingly important in the collapsing Zimbabwe economy, but also the site of diverse social relations. The thesis also shows that the formal and informal are part of the same deeply segmented economy and not two distinct, separate economies. The extended case study method is used to describe and analyse the nature of informal trading activities among traders dealing in four types of goods commonly found at the flea market: clothes and shoes, DVDs and video games, arts and crafts, and second-hand books. Primary and secondary sources, interviews with policy experts, researchers and activists, a total of 70 semi-structured interviews with traders and participant observation, over a period of one and a half years were used to obtain data on the nature of the informal economy in the current Zimbabwe crisis, and to profile these traders. The thesis describes the daily lives of the traders, their social characteristics and work histories, and the social relations of trust and reciprocity which enable them to source their goods. It is shown that the majority of the traders live an extremely precarious existence marked by low, unstable incomes. However, they should not be viewed as passive victims of the economic crisis, as they demonstrate qualities of resourcefulness and innovation. Nor are they totally excluded from global circuits of production and exchange. Global connections are identified and shown to be relevant to the sourcing and sale of goods. These connections suggest an alternative way of conceptualising globalisation.

Resumen
This research focuses on the measurement of the non-observed economic activities by sector of South Africa for the 2011 and 2016 calendar years. The purpose of the research is to determine whether the current GDP as estimated by Statistics South Africa is under- or overestimated when considering the non-observed economy. The research is based on the 2008 System of National Accounts as it determines the guidelines, definitions and characteristics of the “Non-observed economy (NOE)” sector and it allows national accountants to use/supplement the research in the estimates of the GDP. This research follows a quantitative methodology where several surveys of Statistics South Africa are used. Where lack of data exists, some administrative data is used regarding the illegal activities. The findings of the research is that the total economy of South Africa is underestimated when taking into account the NOE activities.

Resumen
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of commercialization of civil society organizations, specifically the relationship between the social mission and the requirements of the market economy, which organizations encounter in the implementation of their own commercial activities. The research part of the work is a case study, which was carried out in the social enterprise Přestupní stanice as a hybrid form of civil society organization operating on the border of the non-profit sector and the market sector. Through a case study, the work seeks to understand the experience that managers have with situations where there is a confrontation between the social mission and the requirements of the market economy, whether they perceive this confrontation as conflict or not, and how to resolve a potential conflict. The research findings show that in the researched organization, commercialization in the form of the introduction of commercial activities serves to support goals and social mission, and both of these elements (fulfillment of social mission and implementation of commercial activities) complement each other, constantly balance and cannot be separated for functioning.

Neste trabalho é utilizada a análise classificatória.
The economic indicators evolve according to economic activities which develop in the country. Therefore progress or regress depends on the performance of activities of economic sector. It may be of interest to verify how these activities are grouped in different situations, by their level of similarity. Classification of similar variables and groups is an important human activity. In all phases of life classification is part of the learning process, especially when learning carries an enormous weight, such as when a child learns to distinguish «black from white», or mother from father, making it an everyday process in the subconscious where they are applied; classification depends on the situations faced constantly. In current topics such as economics, management and marketing, research emerges to investigate the relation between objects or variables that may or may not result in a summary of data through the form of groups of similar objects or variables. This work is intended to verify how the Portuguese economic activities are grouped among themselves through economic evolution in 2009 and 2010. This analysis uses twenty seven economic activities in seven distinct sections or branches, in order to be able to check whether there are areas that contain completely different products of services. In this work the classification cluster analysis is used. Through this method, studies will be carried out to determine how similar activities are, under the representation of groups. Four indices are studied in different areas of activity Business: Volume; Employment; Salary and number of hours worked.

It is followed by the summarization of the aim of the work and the research methods. Quantitative research methods used in the work included the questionnaire survey in the form of the Personnel Activity Questionnaire and the VSM 94 a 2013 tests. Among the qualitative methods used for the purposes of the thesis belong observations, unstructured interviews and Color Semantic Differential Tests were used from qualitative methods. The current situation in the company was characterized by the analysis of the individual questionnaires, which was supplemented with the information obtained through interviews and observations. After a thorough analysis and interconnection of the results of all research methods, it has been found out that corporate culture tends to deserve the dimensions of low power distance, femininity, collectivism, and acceptance of risks and changes. The undesirable resultant dimensions include the short-term business orientation and the dimension of indulgence. The final part of the thesis focuses on designing measures that stabilize the desired cultural dimensions and, above all, change the undesirable cultural dimensions. The results of the personnel activities' questionnaire which identified the main shortcomings and problems were used to suggest specific changes. The introduction of the proposed changes directs the enterprise closer to the knowledge economy, which improves its performance and competitiveness.

Gomes, Ana Sofia Carraço. "The influence of politician appointments to corporate boards on the financial performance of firms in Portugal". Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/29698.

Texto completo
Resumen
Although several studies suggest that a corporate political activity such as the appointment of politicians enhances firm performance, the literature on this field is still conflicting and inconclusive. A study in the Portuguese economy may add some enlightening insights to the literature, helping to clarify this relationship. Therefore, drawing on the resource dependence theory which emphasizes how important it is for firms to minimize uncertainty and interdependence, I argue that politicians benefit firms by mitigating risks due to their knowledge and political influence. This thesis aims to evaluate the extent to which this relationship is true in the Portuguese context. Furthermore, this dissertation also compares firms from less and heavily regulated industries to better understand the impact of this moderator. Predictions were tested using a dataset of the 44 firms in the Euronext Lisbon Stock for the focal period of 2010 to 2018 to create a panel data with performance indicators and control variables. The results suggest a non-significant relationship between politicians and performance which might be associated with the double-effect a politician has by adding and destroying value at the same time. Nevertheless, a post hoc analysis demonstrates a strong effect of local politicians on performance, proving how valuable and powerful they are at a regional level. Moreover, I found robust evidence of a positive relationship between international politicians and performance under different levels of regulation which demonstrates the importance of reputation and legitimacy for a firm.

This business plan aims to present a strategy for the implementation and management of a cultural and creative centre in Great Lisbon. In addition to the theoretical section, which refers to the growth of the economy and cultural and creative industries around the world and, with particular focus on Lisbon state, this plan consists in presenting all the steps needed to implement a cultural and creative centre, describing not only a proposal concept and its values, its vision and its mission, as well as providing an idea about the amplitude of the respective market and defining its target audience and the human resources, the equipment, the suppliers, the partners, the strategies and the investment required to build a creative centre and put into practice the proposed activities to respond to the demands, needs, interests and desires of the emerging trends. In this way, this document presents a proposal that, through the promotion of different activities with cultural and creative value, aims to solve the evolving needs and interests of the societies, either as a result of the emergence of new cultures and new lifestyles, or due to uncountable other factors base on the new generations and on the new economy that will drive the societies in the future, exploring credible financial indicators to analyse the viability of the business under study. This plan, as the conclusions drawn, meets the information and ideas presented in the theoretical segment about the creative economy and the dynamics of success that cities must adopt to face the future, providing brief studies about the expansion and the development of the creative economy and their industries in Europe, as well as the state of the cultural sector in Lisbon and also the factors of attractiveness that have contributed for the exponential improvement of the entire region covered by the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Following this analysis, in order to clarify the concept and solve the problem identified, this plan is an essential tool which its intention aims to ensure that the centre operates as it must according to the needs, desires and interest of the new societies, as well as according to the requirements and legal obligations to implement the centre. In this sense, the following business plan is a tool which analyse in greater detail the activities, the processes and the steps that must be achieved to ensure that the centre is workable and profitable in order to generate contents and seduce investors to, therefore, request financial support with greater probability of success.
