The protection of the rights of sexual minorities in Africa is a controversial issue. It is not unusual to find newspaper reports on gross violations suffered by this minority group. Gays and lesbians are victims of violence, sometimes resulting in death. Sexual minorities in Africa are often confronted with government actions such as those of the Nigerian government that recently submitted to the parliament a Bill to make provisions for the prohibition of relationships between persons of the same sex, celebration of marriage, registration of gay clubs and societies and publicity of same sex relationships. The objective of this study was to suggest possible legal protection and recognition of sexual minority rights under the African human rights system.

Poor sexual health communication among first generation Nigerian American parents and their adolescent children due to disparities in cultural integration constitutes a barrier to effective parent-child relationships. The purpose of this phenomenological study, which was guided by the acculturative family distancing (AFD) model, was to explore the lived experience of Nigerian immigrant families in the United States regarding communication effectiveness about sex and integration into the American way of life. The research questions addressed cultural bias, parent-adolescent communication effectiveness, strategies employed, resources available to new immigrants, and barriers to their usage. Data collection was by individual interviews of 5 Nigerian-born parents and their adolescent children ages 13 to 17 years who have been in the United States for 10 years or more. Inductive analysis of qualitative data revealed challenges of parenting roles due to differences in cultural beliefs and parents' perceptions of their children's confrontational attitudes; parents' lack of knowledge about safe sex education methods and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases; Nigerian parents' authoritarian views; and parents' belief in the need to listen to the views of their children and relate more closely to them. Parents reported wanting to curtail children's rights, while children reported that their parents did not respect their opinion or privacy, which is a barrier to the cordial relationship they wanted. Most parents recommended orientation classes for parents to help resolve these issues and ease integration challenges. These results may inform policy on integration for new immigrants and promote strategies for improving effective parent-adolescent communication.

Racial discrimination continues to be a major issue, particularly in the lives of minorities. In the United States, racial discrimination significantly influences many aspects of minorities’ lives such as physical health, psychological health, access to jobs, and access to higher education. In this research, discrimination is conceptualized as a psychological stressor in the lives of minority adolescents since it poses a risk to healthy adolescent development; it can lead to feelings of helplessness, derogation, and demoralization. Using a cross-sectional sample of 618 African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans, and drawing on the integrative model for the study of developmental competencies in minority children, risk and resilience, social identity, and intersectionality, this paper examines (a) the relationship between racial discrimination and mental health problems of pre-adolescents and adolescents, (b) the moderating role of the importance of racial/ethnic identity, religious importance, and other support factors, (c) the moderating influence of gender and (d) the moderating influence of neighborhood factors. Results indicate that worrying about discrimination, having a negative future outlook, high levels of policing in the neighborhood, poverty, and experiences of violence, increased depression. In contrast, importance of ethnicity, having a close relationship with parents, and the availability of services for youths, reduced depression for adolescents. In addition, experiences of violence moderated the effect of discrimination on depression for Hispanic girls only. Results for aggression indicate that negative future outlook, and experiences of violence, significantly increased aggression, while importance of ethnicity, and having a close relationship with parents decreased aggression. In addition, importance of ethnicity moderated the effect of parental closeness, while the availability of services for youths, moderated the effect of worrying about discrimination for African-American girls only. Results for withdrawal, indicate that worrying about discrimination, having a negative future outlook, high levels of policing in the neighborhood, and experiences of violence increased withdrawal. In contrast, importance of ethnicity, importance of religion, and having a close relationship with parents, reduced withdrawal for adolescents. For African-American boys only, the importance of religion moderated the effect of discrimination, while the importance of ethnicity moderated the effect of parental closeness. For Hispanic girls only, the availability of services for youths moderated the effect of discrimination.

Although a relationship has been found in some studies between paternal attachment and female sexual behavior, knowledge of this relationship in African Americans has been limited. The purpose of this research was to determine if there was a relationship between father-daughter attachment, parent teen sexual risk communication and early sexual activity, condom use, history of sexually transmitted infection, global/sexual self-esteem and teen pregnancy in African-American females. An anonymous consent and survey was administered online to N=113 African American college women (age 18-21) attending a southeastern university. Measurements included the Parent Attachment Questionnaire (Father), Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem, Sexual Self-Esteem Inventory (short scale), the PTSRC and a sexual history. Findings of high levels of father attachment were found in this mostly middle class sample but neither attachment nor parent teen sexual risk communication was related to age of vaginal/oral initiation, condom use or sexually transmitted infections. However, attachment was predictive of global self-esteem. In addition, those with a high level of attachment were 1.0 times more likely to also have a positive pregnancy test history when maternal support for the father–daughter relationship was low. No relationship was found between sexual self-esteem and paternal attachment or between sexual self-esteem and condom use. Paternal monitoring was associated with older ages of vaginal initiation. Conclusion: Higher paternal attachment coupled with paternal monitoring may facilitate global self-esteem and be a protective factor against early sexual initiation (vaginal). Fathers are in need of education as to how to stay connected with daughters and to engage in direct and indirect sexual risk communication. Nevertheless, prevention strategies utilizing fathers could be effective in delaying onset of sexual activity. This document was originally created in Microsoft Word 2000 and later modified in Microsoft Word 2007 (compatibility mode). SPSS 17.0 statistical software was used for analysis and N-Query 6.0 was utilized for power analysis.

Breastfeeding is the best infant feeding source of nutrition for infants in their early stages of development. However, there is a fundamental gap in the number of African American women that initiate breastfeeding compared to White, Asian, and Hispanic mothers. Social cognitive theory was used to explore the breastfeeding intentions, beliefs, perceived barriers, and perceptions on breastfeeding through a basic qualitative research method. To capture the essence of the lived experiences of African American pregnant women, a purposeful sample of 13 African American pregnant women were invited to participate in the study. Two focus groups discussions pertaining to breastfeeding intentions and perceptions were conducted. Data were collected using hand-written notes and audio-taped responses from participants. The data were analyzed using NVivo12 Plus qualitative software program to discover themes and patterns. The findings resulted in 3 themes and 2 subthemes. The themes that emerged from the responses were (a) breastfeeding is the best feeding option, (b) breastfeeding barriers, and (c) breastfeeding intentions and duration. There was identified support in terms of intentions to initiate breastfeeding immediate postpartum and continuing some breastfeeding through 6 months. Further results include subthemes of encouragement and outside influences and recommended future breastfeeding support. Breastfeeding barriers ranged from previous negative experiences, negative comments and advice from family and friends, perceived lack of milk, and pain. This study contributes to positive social change within the community by providing some insight into possible interventions or approaches to improve breastfeeding intentions and to ultimately improve the lives of infants.

The voices of youth are typically absent in research on African communities. The assumption is that children are not really active subjects, and that adults can speak and act on their behalf. This study addresses the walls of silence between children and parents; teachers and learners and between boys and girls, on matters of gender, sexuality and HIV/AIDS. Within these walls, youth construct and re-construct their roles as either feminine or masculine. We see them challenging social constructs and reclaiming their voices and their right to be heard as experts about their own gendered and sexual lives. Using interviews and focus group discussions, a tri-site study was carried out in Kenya, and the findings presented illustrate how boys and girls construct their identities, negotiating, adapting to and resisting common articulations of masculinity and femininity. It demonstrates why it is wrong to constantly associate gender with women and girls, focusing on masculinity and femininity, not in isolation of each other, but as relational identities which derive their meaning from each other. "Breaking Silence" focuses on gender, sexuality and HIV/AIDS risk amongst youth, demonstrating how youth can empower themselves to steer their agenda and articulate what it means to be particular boys or girls, while developing strategies to deal with their issues.

African American women living in the U.S. face immense challenges to protect themselves from HIV infection. One in every 32 African American women is diagnosed with the disease and heterosexual contact is the primary mode of transmission. A better understanding of the African American woman’s beliefs and decisions related to safe sex practices can give direction to strategies to promote safer sexual behaviors. The purpose of this study was to explore the association of the African American woman’s attitudinal beliefs, normative beliefs, and relationship control beliefs with self-reported sexual behaviors. The Theory of Planned Behavior served as the study’s theoretical framework, supporting the premise beliefs are precursors to explanations and understanding human behavior. Using a cross-sectional, correlational design, a convenience sample of 95 African American women from the southeastern United States was obtained. Results confirmed a statistically significant 1) positive relationship between gender role beliefs and relationship power, (r = 0.354, p < .001); 2) negative relationship between gender ratio imbalance beliefs and relationship power, (r = -0.472, p < 0.001); 3) positive association between relationship power and avoidance of risky sexual behavior, (r = 0.340, p = 0.001); 4) negative correlation between gender ratio imbalance beliefs and risky sexual behaviors, (r = -0.235, p = 0.022); and 5) positive correlation between safer sexual behavior and peer perceptions of safer sex behaviors, (r = 0.475, p < 0.001). Results from a stepwise multiple regression indicated that relationship power (p = 0.001) and peer perception (p < 0.001) were significant predictors of sexual behavior, accounting for 31% (p < 0.001) of the variance.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to a number of adverse effects in adulthood including higher levels of depression, shame, guilt, self-blame, somatic concerns, anxiety, dissociation, repression, denial, relationship problems, and sexual problems. Little is known, however, about the influence CSA has on parenting, specifically among African American mothers, as previous researchers have primarily focused on the trauma experienced by survivors. Examining the impact of CSA on African American mothers' parenting is important as those children of survivors will often also experience the impact of the long-term sequelae associated with CSA. Guided by womanist theory, the purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative inquiry was to explore the lived experiences in relation to parenting of African American mothers who survived CSA. Experiential anecdotes of data collected from interviews with 7 participants were hand coded for emergent themes; analysis generated 4 essential themes and 10 subthemes of experience. Themes included impact of abuse, bonding, efforts to protect, spirituality, and desires. This study's implications for positive social change include contributing to the knowledge base about the process of parenting experienced by African American female survivors of CSA. Findings may add insight shedding light on cultural nuances in parenting and coping with trauma and inform culturally-competent practice. Using study findings, mental health providers may be able to develop tailored treatment interventions and better support services for the prevention of adverse long-term effects of CSA in African American women.

In 2015, Mississippi had the 3rd highest adolescent birth rate in the United States, high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, and enduring racial disparities between African American and White teenagers. Few researchers have described the immediate cultural environment to determine how it may influence the sexual behaviors and attitudes of African American teens. The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study was to describe the sociocultural environment of African American adolescents in Mississippi that influences their sexual behavior by exploring the knowledge, feelings, experiences and beliefs of African American adults. The social cognitive theory was used as a theoretical framework to address 3 purpose-driven research questions. Criterion-based convenience and snowball sampling was used to select 16 African American male and female participants ages 18-64 who were residents of the study location for at least 10 years. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview protocol designed. Interview transcripts were coded, data was triangulated, and themes were identified based upon participant responses. Findings were identified across 3 thematic categories: knowledge, beliefs and experiences, and community engagement. Participants wanted adolescents to postpone sexual activity until they were more mature and believed adolescents and their parents need education and improved communication about risks and prevention. Recommendations include deeper exploration into public health and community engagement strategies to improve health outcomes in the face of unique community challenges. Social change may also result from this study's initiation of community conversations around adolescent sexuality and healthy development.

Teenage pregnancy is disproportionate between African American and Caucasian females. This disproportion is notable because African American teenagers are 3 times more likely to become pregnant than their Caucasian counterparts are. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship exists among major life events, sexual behaviors, and resultant teenage pregnancy among African American females in the United States. The theoretical framework for this study was social learning theory. Three key research questions focused on relationships among (a) major life events and initial sexual behavior, (b) ethnicity, and (c) teenage pregnancy. Independent variables were life event and ethnicity, and dependent variables were teenage pregnancy and initial sexual behavior. The population sample included a total of 12,284 data observations of African American and Caucasian females. Hypotheses were tested using logistic regression and independent sample t tests. The study used public domain data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Survey of Family Growth. Study results indicated that Research Question (RQ) 1 confirmed that life events are a statistically significant predictor of teen pregnancy. RQ2 confirmed that no significant relationship exists between Caucasian and African American adolescent females and the existence of teen pregnancy. RQ3 confirmed significant mean differences in the age of first sexual intercourse between Caucasians and African Americans. This study may contribute to positive social change by educating and empowering teenage African American women about teen pregnancy, enhancing their social competence, and potentially preventing unwanted pregnancy.

Two significant public health concerns that threaten both the physical and mental health of African-American women are Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). African-American women (AAW) in the south carry the greatest burden of HIV and disproportionately represent the region with an incidence of 71% for new HIV infections, and elevated rates of morbidity and mortality. In 2013, the murder rate among AAW was 2.5 times higher than it was among Caucasian women. Most of the published studies that explored the association between IPV and HIV had mixed populations, did not explore topics unique to AAs, or were qualitative studies. The aim of this study was to assess the associations between colorism, IPV, and high-risk sexual behaviors (HRSB)/HIV-risk among AAW and determine if colorism was a mediator in the IPV-HRSB relationship. The theory of power and gender and the social cognitive theory provided the theoretical framework of this study. The dissemination of this self-assessed quantitative, cross-sectional survey design was to a homogeneous sample of 143 women. The analysis of the variables used correlation statistics and linear regression. Findings revealed a significant relationship between IPV-HRSB (r = .882, p =.001), colorism-IPV (r2 = .371, p = .001) and colorism-HRSB (r = .377, p = .001); however, colorism did not mediate the IPV-HRSB relationship. This study has implications for positive social change in that practitioners may gain a better understanding of colorism's influence on IPV and HRSB, and may serve to modify existing programs. This knowledge may subsequently help to decrease adverse behaviors that are unique to AAW prone to IPV with an increased HIV-risk as a result of colorism.

This dissertation examines the legacy of secrecy, silences, and the unspoken in twentieth century African American literary texts. Using a range of texts representing various eras within the genre of African American literature, this dissertation contends that secrecy is a trope and may be attributed to inherited, maintained traditional practices from West and West Central Africa. Having read a number of African American texts and connecting my personal experiences with these works, I noticed a pattern of withheld discourse throughout. Most notably, Leslie Lewis’s Telling Narratives posits a reason for this trope by examining earlier narratives, specifically nineteenth-century African American texts. She argues the master/slave relationship as the prevailing reason for the secretive motif. Yet, traditional and cultural practices noted in early African publications demonstrate that Africans were keeping secrets prior to their diasporic scatterings. By examining early West African-derived works, as well as nineteenth-century African American texts, I ground my position that secrecy as we see it evolves from or relates to early signifying and language manipulations, particular to African-derived people. Thus, the early works connect sustained homeland ties to the literature that follows, providing an explanation for the secrecy reflected in African American literature. This study highlights three types of secrets: identity, family, and sexual, all of which are interrelated and, out of one, the other type may result. The texts that best demonstrate these silences are James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and Nella Larsen’s Passing; James Baldwin’s Go Tell It on the Mountain and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple; and Gayl Jones’s Corregidora and Lalita Tademy’s Cane River. Each text group corresponds with a secret type. Overall, this dissertation challenges the notion that secrecy as a trope in African American literature limits itself to the master/slave relationship in the United States. The previously mentioned texts highlight a direct link to West and West Central African traditions maintained after the Middle Passage. Hence, these preserved homeland customs, including secrecy, are reflected in twentieth-century African American literature.

Background: Adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 acquire nearly half of all new STDs in the United States, yet they represent only 25% of the sexually active population. Young men and women in this age group have the highest rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, especially in the African American population. Adolescent risk factors include having a history of pregnancy or STDs, being arrested or incarcerated, substance abuse, early sexual debut and having 4 or more lifetime sexual partners. Protective behaviors such as parental involvement, school enrollment, and consistent condom use have been associated with decreased incidence of STDs. The purpose of this study is to observe changes in adolescent behaviors and experiences that are known risk factors for acquiring sexually transmitted diseases. The aim is to identify the time at which STD prevention interventions may be administered most effectively. In addition, the study aims to identify relevant themes and content that may be useful in creating interventions targeted to different age groups and genders. Methods: This study utilizes primary data collected between 1999 and 2003 by Dr. Rothenberg and colleagues for a community-based network study of low-income African American adolescents living in a working class neighborhood in Southwest Atlanta. Two descriptive analyses were conducted: a period analysis in which all participants ages 15 to 18 who completed any or all of three interviews were included; and a cohort analysis, which included only participants who completed three interviews and who were 15, 16, 17 or 18 years of age at the time of the first interview. Univariate analysis was used to describe each variable and the resulting frequencies and percentages were reported. Results: In both period and cohort analyses, higher proportions of older adolescents (ages 17 and 18) reported engaging in risky behaviors including drinking alcohol, using marijuana, having sex and having multiple sexual partners, compared to younger adolescents (ages 15 and 16). Males reported higher proportions of engaging in risky behaviors than females, but also higher proportions of condom use. The proportion of participants diagnosed with one or more STDs decreased at each interview. In the cohort analysis, the proportion of participants who perceived their STD risk as “medium” or “high” increased over time. Conclusions: The findings suggest that as adolescents mature they engage in a greater variety of risky behaviors known to have a positive association to STD diagnosis. Period analyses, which have usually been done to study the sexual behaviors of adolescents, may give aberrant results that are clearer when the population is studied as a cohort. Future studies are needed to more precisely identify the period during which adolescents experience rapid changes in their risk behaviors.

The purpose ofthis study was to examine the effects of age of initial sexual orientation and family composition on cognitive distortions among adolescent Caucasian and African American male sexual offenders. This study was based on the assumption that the age of initial sexual orientation and single parent households effect the amount of cognitive distortions present in Caucasian and African American males who have been identified as sexual offenders. Parenting make-up (single parents or married couples) and age of orientation to sexuality were considered the two independent variables in this study. The dependent variable was identified as cognitive distortion. A case study analysis approach was used to analyze data that were obtained from completed Adolescent Cognition Scales and Psychosexual Assessments provided by a clinical social work expert in the field of adolescent sexual offenders. The conclusion drawn from the findingsindicated that there was a weak positive relationship between age of initial sexual orientation and cognitive distortions. The findings further revealed that there was no statistically significant relationship between family composition and cognitive distortions and that African American adolescent sexual offenders had a slightly higher degree of cognitive distortions than Caucasian adolescent sexual offenders.

This qualitative grounded study explores power dynamics and its influence on sexual decision-making amongst college-age African American women. The film All of Us was shown to eighteen African American women to understand how they perceive power dynamics and sexual decision-making. Taking place at Georgia State University‟s main campus in Atlanta, focus groups and one on one interviews were implemented. Much of the research being conducted theorize that the risk factors regarding HIV infection are related to risky sexual decision-making and lack of consistent condom use; however this study concluded that there is a relationship between sexual decision-making and gendered power dynamics.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a complex issue among African American children, who experience significantly higher rates of CSA (Sedlak et al., 2012). Despite this, a dearth of research has examined CSA prevention among African American children. Moreover, there are no established culturally sensitive prevention programs targeted at addressing CSA among this demographic. This study addressed a significant gap in the literature by developing and evaluating the Speak7 African American Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (Speak7). Speak7 is a culturally sensitive, adult-focused CSA prevention program that aims to enhance the CSA prevention competence of adults who provide for African American children. Speak7 was developed by the principal investigator of this study using the National Standards for the Primary Prevention of Sexual Assault through Education (Carmody et al., 2009). Speak7 was evaluated using a formative approach to assess and enhance the acceptability of this intervention for African American adults. A qualitative design consisting of a pilot intervention with a focus group and key informant interviews was adopted to enable a detailed exploration of African American adults’ perceptions of Speak7’s program design, strengths, weaknesses, cultural congruence, and value. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic content analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Nine themes emerged from the data: (1) acceptable design, (2) identified strengths, (3) identified weaknesses, (4) culturally appropriate, (5) valued by targets, (6) recommendations, (7) appropriate for targets, (8) dynamic engagement, and (9) views of CSA. Findings reveal critical insights into participants’ perspectives regarding the acceptability of Speak7 and inform program revisions.

There has been a lack of inclusion of LGBTQ people of color within the psychological literature. It is important to attend to a number of diverse demographic variables in order to begin to understand a particular group's experience. The unique intersection of demographic variables or identities shapes a person's experience. Thus, the current study was designed to understand the experiences of those who are not typically represented within the literature. Specifically targeted were individuals who had some African American background and were both sexual and gender minorities. The focus of the current study was on life experiences and strengths due to researchers historically focusing on disadvantages of minority groups. This study was a qualitative investigation conducted in order to identify the strengths and influencing factors of strengths of those with multiple minority statuses. Twelve individuals that were at least in part African American and a sexual and gender (or gender identity) minority were interviewed in person. During the interview process participants discussed some of the challenges they faced, the support systems they had, and the various strengths they demonstrated throughout their lives. A grounded theory approach was utilized to analyze the data. The core phenomenon of this study, referred to as the storyline, revolved around participants' development and utilization of strengths, which included the working through various challenges and accessing support within their contexts. Consistent with past research, the development of strengths was impacted by sociocultural/societal factors, community, religion/spirituality, interpersonal relationships, life events, and intrapersonal concerns. Unique strengths included participants' tendency toward intrapersonal growth, perseverance, connections with others, activation of inner coping strategies, and activism.

CONTEXT: Although a large body of epidemiologic evidence suggests that socioeconomic status (SES) is one of the associated risk factors for poor health outcome, its impact on the prevalence of asthma in minority populations is not well understood. AIM: The purpose of this study is to examine the association of SES with asthma in American minority children. Specifically, this study is designed to determine the role of poverty status, insurance coverage, parental education, living conditions, and employment on the risks of asthma in non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic Americans. METHOD: The data (n=77,601) used in this study were retrieved from the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) and the National Center for Health Statistics of 2003. Data on children aged 3-17 years were included in the analysis. Odds ratio from the multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between SES variables and the risk of asthma. RESULTS: Non-Hispanic black children were 4 times more likely to develop asthma if their parents had a less than college education, 18 times more likely to develop asthma if they lived in a poverty-stricken environment, 11 times more likely to develop asthma if someone in the household smoked, and 25 times more likely to develop asthma if they were uninsured. Hispanic children are 35 times more likely to develop asthma if someone within the home smoked, and 145 times more likely to develop asthma if they were uninsured. Both African American and Hispanic children were over two times more likely to be hospitalized because of asthma than their non-Hispanic white counterparts. After adjusting for SES, there were no statistically significant differences in odds of asthma in non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic American children. CONCLUSION: Racial/ethnic differences in asthma are not fully explained by their differences in SES. Thus, a reduction and elimination of asthma among minority and Caucasian children requires a comprehensive understanding of the role of other factors. More research is needed to examine genetic and other social and environmental contributors to racial/ethnic differences in asthma.

This study examined the relationship between African American women diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and risky sexual behaviors. The aims of the study were: (1) to describe knowledge related to sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS; (2) to determine high-risk sexual behaviors; and (3) to discuss intervention needed to reduce risky sexual behaviors. The setting was Positive Impact, a non-profit agency located in Atlanta, Georgia that provides counseling to those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The sample consisted of 25 African American women between the ages of 18 to 50. The participants were given a 97-item questionnaire to asses demographics, knowledge about the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS, and risky sexual behaviors. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square goodness-of-fit test. The findings indicated that although the participants had a high level of knowledge about the sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS, they still engaged in risky sexual behaviors. The results are valuable for clinicians because it will aid in educating individuals about risky sexual behaviors. Also, it will be useful for developing intervention programs and implementing policies that may eventually decrease risky sexual behaviors and the spread of HIV/AIDS among African American women.

African Americans who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) are discriminated against in the African American community. Sociodemographics such as income, education, age, and religion/spirituality have been shown to be associated with sexual prejudice. There is limited research on how African American cultural attitudes influence attitudes towards sexual orientation. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which demographic variables and African American cultural attitudes (measured by the African American Acculturation Scale-Revised; AAAS-R) predict attitudes toward sexual orientation in African American adults (measured by the Attitudes towards Lesbians and Gay Men Scale; ATLG). Social identity theory (SIT) was used to describe how group affiliation influences attitudes. A sample of African Americans who were 18 years or older (n = 236) completed the questionnaires online. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the relative importance of demographics and cultural attitudes in predicting attitudes towards homosexuals and lesbians. The results of the study indicated that religious affiliation and religious beliefs and practices were statistically significant in predicting attitudes towards both homosexual and lesbian individuals. These findings suggest that individuals who identify as Christians and have stronger religious beliefs and practices are more likely to have negative attitudes towards lesbians and gay men. These results lend support to efforts to create programs to educate people about cultural misconceptions of the African American GLBT community and to encourage spiritual leaders to promote efforts support to them.

The focus of this study was to examine ethnic identity and coping style as potential factors in the development of Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms. This study obtained information from 381 undergraduate students at various universities and examined these variables using three instruments: the Brief COPE (Carver, 1997), the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (Weathers, Litz, Herman, Huska, & Keane, 1993), and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney, 1992). Correlation and multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relationships among these variables. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) were used to examine differences in ethnic identity, coping style, and Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms between and among the racial groups of the sample. The relevant peer-reviewed literature as well as limitations to this study and future directions for research were discussed.
