Purpose In Africa, poverty and food insecurity is pervasive due to intertwined factors including, declining crop yields, land degradation and inadequate policy and institutional support. With ever-increasing populations, climate change effects will be intensified, and a major crisis is inevitable unless measures to sustain land resources are urgently taken. This paper aims to argue that vibrant rural institutions are necessary to ensure food security and environmental protection, consequently contributing to climate change resilience. Abstract The association between convection and African easterly wave (AEW) activity over tropical Africa and the tropical Atlantic during the boreal summer is examined using satellite brightness temperature (TB) and ECMWF reanalysis datasets. Spectral analysis using 18 yr of TB data shows significant variance in the 2–6-day range across most of the region. Within the regions of deep convection, this time scale accounts for about 25%–35% of the total variance. The 2–6-day convective variance has similar amplitudes over western and eastern Africa, while dynamic measures of AEW activity show str

Recent work using observational data from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) and reanalysis products suggests that African easterly waves (AEWs) form in association with a “transition” process from smaller and scattered convection into larger and organized mesoscale convective activity. However, the transition process is unclear and how mesoscale convection initiates AEWs is not well understood. Analysis based on 25 years of ISCCP and reanalysis datasets show that increasing intradiurnal activity, atmospheric instability, and specific humidity precede the development

Eritrea fought a war of liberation for three decades between the early 1960s and 1991. While professional research stagnated because of the war, amateur archaeologists provided the sole source of information for ancient material culture in the country during this era. With the coming of independence in 1993, awareness of the potential value of Eritrea’s heritage resources began to grow, leading to an initiative in 1997 to teach archaeology and heritage management at the University of Asmara.Out of the combined training and research programmes conducted by the University of Asmara have come sev

The two most important abiotic factors affecting potato productivity in many areas of the world and especially in the dry African tropics are drought and high temperature. The situation is worsened by global warming. High temperature and drought reduce not only yields but also quality of potatoes. The effects of drought depend on the genotype, timing, duration and severity of the stress; plant emergence and tuberization are two critical periods when water stress most affects the final tuber yield. The susceptibility of potato crops to high temperature largely depends on genotype, development s

Abstract. Dr J.S.G. McCulloch was deeply involved in the establishment of research catchments in East Africa and subsequently in the UK to investigate the hydrological consequences of changes in land use. Comparison of these studies provides an insight into how influential his inputs and direction have been in the progressive development of the philosophy, the instrumentation and the analytical techniques now employed in catchment research. There were great contrasts in the environments: tropical highland (high radiation, intense rainfall) vs. temperate maritime (low radiation and frontal stor

Cordia africana Lam is an economically and ecologically valuable tree of the Western Highlands forest of Cameroon that is under pressure of over-exploitation and habitat fragmentation. There is a need for fast and easy means of mass production of quality planting stock for upregulation of the population of the species. An experiment was carried out to investigate the combined effects of branch type and growth medium on early growth and survival of C. africana cuttings. Treatments were comprised of three branch types (primary, secondary, tertiary) of cuttings origin and three growth media (sand

Abstract Recent U-Pb high-precision geochronological studies have shown rapid emplacement of the intrusive doleritic component of the Karoo Large Igneous Province (KLIP) in Southern Africa. However, these studies focused on a relatively small geographic and altitudinal region of the KLIP. Additionally, the timing of initiation of extrusive volcanism, preserved in the Drakensberg-Lesotho highlands and its relationship to the intrusive suite, has only been imprecisely constrained by Ar-Ar dates. Here, we present new high-resolution U-Pb zircon ages on dolerite sills and dykes from across the cen

Background and research aims Bees are important pollinators of flowering wild plants and agricultural crops that contribute significantly towards food security, improving people’s livelihoods, and maintaining genetic diversity in plant communities. However, the decline of the bee population due to anthropogenic changes and limited knowledge of bees is threatening bee diversity, particularly in sub–Saharan Africa. Negative perceptions, that is, fear and disgust, are common emotions that lead to a lack of support for bee conservation. Understanding local people’s perceptions is vital as it can h

This book details how African American women used lessons in basic literacy to crack the foundation of white supremacy and sow seeds for collective action during the civil rights movement. Deanna Gillespie traces the history of the Citizenship Education Program (CEP), a grassroots initiative that taught people to read and write in preparation for literacy tests required for voter registration—a profoundly powerful objective in the Jim Crow South. Born in 1957 as a result of discussions between community activist Esau Jenkins, schoolteacher Septima Clark, and Highlander Folk School director Myl
