Texto completoThe aim of this PhD is not only to focus on Termessos' hydraulic settlement, which has been erected on a sourceless location, but also to examine all explorable structures in order to define their socio-Historical interest and highlight their value to the understanding of hellenistic and roman times. We have started by studying the written sources and by conducting extensive research on site. Different technics have been employed such as georadar technology (Ground Penetration Radar, GPR) and vapour magnetometer (gradiometer) in order to collect data during the six archaeological prospections which took place between 2010 and 2013. Researchers from various disciplines have brought their expertise to this work : architects, geographers, geologists, hydrologists and archaeologists. During this investigation, many ancient sites have been explored in Anatolia, Greece, France and Spain in order to understand the evolution of the hydraulic system with regard to geographical requirements. Followings this, 162 hydraulic structures have been studied and registered. The irrigation and water supply network as well as the sewerage system have been restored. We have discovered two new types of ancient tank, a well preserved water dam, an entertainment building and the only sanctuary dedicated to Pan found in Anatolia so far. The remains of two establishments have been interpreted as thermal baths. Most of all, and despite a challenging natural environment, the Termessians have romanized their city by carrying out great major construction projects allowing them to fulfill their water needs and to celebrate their power

Texto completoEssential in the development of Pharaonic civilization, water was especially studied through the place it occupies in the religion but rarely through its everyday use. Generally, hydraulic layouts are thus only briefly mentioned in Egyptological literature. From the data supplied by archaeology (materials, construction methods, etc.), this thesis thus has for first objective to study these installations in detail by relying on a corpus which lists, for the whole Pharaonic period, more than 400 structures, classified in four categories: wells, pipes, ponds and sanitary layouts. In a second hand, this detailed analysis, completed by a synthesis work replacing each of these installations in its context while confronting them simultaneously with written and iconographic sources, allows more widely to understand how water became integrated into Egyptians life. The presence or absence of these structures in houses and more widely in town thus reflects the inhabitant’s needs and the difficulties they were facing. Hydraulic layouts therefore appear to be a source of information not to be neglected for they cast new light on the Pharaonic city and its way of life while revealing certain aspects of the Egyptian society

Texto completoThe thesis project assumes that the construction of hydropower dams could be a driven force for a harmonious economic development between mountains and plains. The aim would be to link policies for hydropower dam development, and policies for agriculture in mountains, within individual strategies, in relationship with physical and socio-economic constraints. Since 2000’s, throughout Southeast Asia, many projects of large hydropower dams are built or being built to meet the strong growth in demand for energy, causing great threats to water management and the environment on the one hand, and imposing important population displacement on the other hand. In these mountainous regions, the erosion process is a major risk for both the filling of reservoirs and agricultural soil productivity. Then major investors, for the lifespan of hydropower dams, and small farmers, for their livelihoods, are equally impacted. The challenge is to reformulate the relationship between planning and management of hydropower dams, and planning and management of agricultural uplands in upstream areas of dams. Although the socio-economic support has been very much improved from the Vietnamese State, displaced and non-displaced farmers are still largely undergoing regional socio-spatial changes on-going. In spite of good government and international intentions, the lack of consultation at local level and the lack of knowledge in hydro-ecology remain major constraints to the success of environmental protection and equity between the concerned populations, two mandatory conditions for sustainability of hydroelectric dam projects. In conclusion, it appears that the successful implantation of a large hydroelectric dam is related to the ability of policymakers to understand the complex interactions between ecological and socio-economic systems

Texto completoINTRODUCTION: The increasing proportion of individuals with physical disabilities (motor, visual or hearing) is an important source of concern. These individuals face numerous daily difficulties related to built environments. Pedestrian infrastructures (e.g., signage, crosswalks, sidewalks) are no exception. Due to their design and maintenance, they pose numerous obstacles limiting the efficiency and the safety of travelling habits of individuals with physical disabilities. This can greatly hinder their ability to fulfill daily tasks. As of now, in the province of Quebec, there are no uniform or clear guidelines based on scientific evidence ensuring accessibility to pedestrian infrastructures for individuals with physical disabilities. This thesis’s general objective is to identify pedestrian infrastructures’ features favouring accessibility and safe mobility of individuals with physical disabilities applicable in the province of Quebec. METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS PER SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: A partnership/participative approach has been used (consultative committee: ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des Transports du Québec (MTMDET), Union des municipalités du Québec (UMQ), Fédération québécoise des municipalités (FQM), Office des personnes handicapées du Québec (OPHQ), Confédération des organismes des personnes handicapées du Québec (COPHAN), Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) and Ville de Québec). The three following specific objectives have been pursued: 1) Identify existing practices for the design of accessible pedestrian infrastructures for individuals with physical disabilities in Quebec’s municipalities and the associated needs. A web survey, addressed to municipalities (n=507 identified) of various sizes, was developed by Tailored Design Method. It allowed the identification of existing practices, facilitators, and obstacles for the design of accessible pedestrian infrastructures in Quebec’s municipalities as well as their needs regarding support for their design. Quantitative descriptive and recursive partitioning analyses revealed that Quebec’s municipalities have few resources/tools to design accessible pedestrian infrastructures, particularly those of less than 15 000 inhabitants (without the obligation of an action plan for individuals with physical disabilities according to the policy À part entière pour un véritable exercice du droit à l’égalité). Accessible practices also present when other practices of the same nature are in place, which implementation should be favoured, as well as the need for a tool to help design practitioners through the design process of accessible pedestrian infrastructures have been identified. 2) Review accessible and safe pedestrian infrastructures for individuals with physical disabilities. A mapping review (scientific and grey literature) allowed the compilation of recommendations for the design of accessible pedestrian infrastructures from 41 scientific articles, evaluated for their quality which was judged as low to moderate, and 96 pertinent documents. The recommendations, which were numerous, varied and were potentially not applicable in the province of Quebec, were rarely evaluated to identify their level of accessibility for various groups of individuals with physical disabilities or confronted to find an ideal solution. 3) Evaluate accessibility and applicability, in the province of Quebec, of the identified accessible and safe pedestrian infrastructures for individuals with physical disabilities. Nominal groups took place with individuals with physical disabilities, health clinicians and researchers in the fields of rehabilitation and design (accessibility experts) to determine which recommendations, from the mapping review, were judged as ensuring accessibility to individuals with physical disabilities. Other nominal groups took place with municipal and transportation agencies’ representatives to determine if the recommendations identified by the accessibility experts were applicable. The final recommendations, forwarded to all the consulted experts, provided a high level of agreement. Only few minor modifications had to be brought. Consequently, design guidelines were developed for eight pedestrian infrastructures: 1) Curb cuts; 2) Sidewalks; 3) Crosswalks; 4) Signage; 5) Rest areas/urban furniture; 6) Ramps; 7) Stairs; and 8) Handrails. A compilation of recommendations has been produced for bus stops, design guidelines could not be developed for this pedestrian infrastructure. CONCLUSIONS : The developed design guidelines, based on scientific evidence, have been judged as useful and applicable in the province of Quebec for the design of accessible pedestrian infrastructures. They are susceptible of being accepted and applied by Quebec’s municipalities. They have a strong potential in aiming for better accessibility and increased social participation of individuals with physical disabilities.

Texto completoThe Saulx-Ornain's river basin situated in the limestoned plateaus of eastern Paris basin (Marne-Meuse interfluve) is divided into several lands where discharges conditions and water resources differ. The water table-river exchanges are determined by the morphological and structural context that establishes underground runoffs between adjoining river basins, characteristic of current stream piracy. Campaigns of measures of the low water discharges show spatial heterogenerous water resources, inherent in limestoned nature of substratum. This spatial disparity of hydrological resources increases control problems of old watermills and the Marne to Rhin ship canal. On the Ornain, ship canal taps influence clearly stream flow and limit reconversion of water mills noted on the Saulx. The Saulx and the Ornain show specific problems of river planning in limestoned country

They move all around the imperial cities on the north, the big south, the littoral regions and the south-west. For the international tourism, first, it is a place to go. This area belongs to the big touristic trips. Anyway, the middle-atlas has always been one of the welcome sectors on the national tourism. This position has been tahen sinee the colonial period with the establishment of an efficient touristic politic. During the summer, the middle-atlas is dry and, most of the time, torrich for the flat country. It is like a real fresh oasis with green areas and beautiful cedar-trees all over besides, the imperial cities are often very close and, some stations like immouzzer and fes have got their life connected together. The national interest for the middle-atlas is increasing by the "informel prostitution tourism". Since the independance and the progressive starting of the european community, the tourism is on important recession to achieve, in certain cases, a residual tourism. Alore and sometimes with a lot of difficulties a social tourism is still there. This tourism is made by the authorities or social organisms. Nowadays, a creation of infrastructure is beginning, which is organized by

Texto completoThis thesis in fundamental and applied research has for biological model the freshwater eel which has always fascinated the world of the research by its unique cycle of life and all its mysteries not solved for some. Worldwide, 19 species of eels exist, some of which are declining in temperate zones, which may justify the increase in research in the tropics. In French Polynesia, this mysterious animal is sacred; the Polynesian legends associate the eels with the creation of life. Three species are present: the marbled eel "Anguilla marmorata", the mountain eel "Anguilla megastoma" and the eel "Anguilla obscura". They do not have the same spatial distribution where the former adapts to any medium, the second goes up the rivers to the upper valley at several hundred meters of altitude, while the latter remains in the lower valley preferring the stagnant waters. Thanks to the numerous rivers on Tahiti, this main island of Polynesia is in the midst of an energy transition and now favors renewable energies; particularly hydroelectricity. However, hydroelectric developments known to cause problems of ecological continuity of freshwater biodiversity, especially for eels, will interest us in this thesis work on the Cifre grant. It is in this context that this thesis, in the largest valley of Tahiti, is the Papenoo. Two problems are studied: the recruitment of glass eel and the study of the adult population. Our results over the three years following the arrival of juvenile eels in the mouth of the Papenoo reveal a seasonal recruitment of elvers from November to March with two peaks in December and January. More than 80% of elvers are Anguilla marmorata. For adult populations, we observe: 1/ more than 90% of the population is also Anguilla marmorata, 2/ adult eels have a density gradient from downstream to upstream, and 3/ biological continuity does not come from dams or water removal in themselves, but comes from the tailrace leaving the hydropower plant where we observe an over-attractiveness for the eels. This study proved to be very important in the theoretical advancement of our biological and ecological knowledge about the eel, in the appropriation by industry of good practices and in a solid communication on the possible coexistence between management and development

Texto completoThis thesis aims to develop a methodology for evaluating the sustainable development of underground constructions, so that we can highlight their specificities. The construction and operation phases of underground facilities have a strong environmental impact; they represent also a consequent financial investment, which is usually a key factor in the decision-making process. In the other hand, these facilities offer many benefits to the city and to their users. This methodology, that proposes a complete evaluation of underground constructions, takes into account the different dimensions of sustainable development: environmental, social, economic. The governance dimension is also integrated through analyzing standards and legislation related to every step of this work. The first part of this thesis contains a detailed study of underground construction projects: functionality and their contribution in the sustainable city. The other parts contain an evaluation of environmental impacts carried out by the Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the analysis of social and economic impacts carried out by the High Environmental Quality (HQE). The aim is to evaluate all the sustainable development aspects on the basis of a scoring system “benefits / drawbacks” for underground constructions. This methodology, applied to an urban tunnel case study, enables to evaluate several alternatives and then to propose a prioritization system of indicator results. By using the developed methodology, the different proposed alternatives can be classified by choosing the most advantageous ones within the meaning of sustainable development

The spelling systems of the authors studied here, whose aim is to design systems that are contrastive (through orthographical, phonological and lexical contrastivity), function through an interaction with the usual spelling norms of standard French. Beyond their differences, these texts all share common features : their two main modes of operation are orthographical dialectalisation in which the operations both of differentiation and of assimilation confer upon the written form its particular dialectal identity; and the dosing of patois forms, in which careful control of variation allows the author to ensure that his text can be read and easily understood. The dynamics of these written systems is based both on oral registers (noting the spoken language) and on written registers (the conventions of written language), which should be taken together with social representations

Texto completoWalking increasingly appears at the forefront of urban policies and city promotional campaigns. It is not by random that this most natural practice of human beings has become a promising field of innovation and research while at the same time being at the heart of land use planning policy addressing public urban spaces. As a perfectly versatile part of urban transport systems, an effective physical exercice and a medium of artistic expression relating the body with different ways of experiencing the city, walking is a constituent element of the foundations of urban social life. For over a century, walking prospered in the twisting streets of the medieval city. When cities made way large avenues, became menaced by the ascendency of the car. After the 1970s, howhever , it came triumphantly back in specially reserved zones as well managed promenades in city centres. Walking seemed to have finally found its place in urban planning. Still, the question remained : has the planning can be informed by further analysing the relation between walking and the environments in which this activity takes place. Focussing on the historical centre of Athens, the research take a three-pronged approach. First, the shift in public policies after the 1970 so as to benefit the practice of walking is examined. While the growth in interest in walking by land use planners during this period is widely recognised, this thesis provides a more detailed examination of how the practice of walking was approached in their projects and visions. The analysis describes how public spaces were shaped during forty years of intense pedestrianization, and how these projects where themselves inscribed in more general programmes aimed at boosting the touristic and cultural profile of the zones around the Acropolis. At the same time that the multiplication of projects in favour of walking was orchestrated by a diverse range of interest, so it also gave rise to new actors in the arena of urban planning. The analysis also shows how these projects impacted on the character and function of public space. Although kwow-how in pedestrianization operations advanded over this 40-year period, it it shown that the pratice of walking was largely ignored. The second approach used in this thesis focuses on walking in areas whose uses and image do not fit with the prevailing image of a commercial-touristic public space landscape. It is argued that the interest of these spaces lies in the fact that they are the centre of controversies arising from the transformations currently occuring in the land uses and the landscape pf the city centre. In which ways and why is walking thriving in Athinas street and Omonoia square, which – despite being criticized for beeing ‘ degraded ’and ‘ chaotic ’ – are managing to attract a surprisingly mixed street life ? By means of close observation of walking the richness of practices in public space related history of the places, land uses and every day street life revealed. If walking depends of collective practices, it is also a personal affair. The deeper understanding of the way that people experience walking and give meaning to places leads to a better understanding of how places function in time. This can in turn help to inform the way in which such places are designed. Ambiance, habits, moods and memories create the fashion in which we inhabit public space. By means of accompanying twenty Athenians during their routine walks, the third approach used in this thesis reveals these subjects’ range of reasons and ways of interacting with their environment

Texto completoThis work examines the meaning and impact of physical activities along the Upper-Normandy coast. The aim of this socio-geographical approach was to determine the types of territorial negotiations at work by analyzing the mediating factors from several angles : coastal transformations concern both usages and representations, as well as the management of choices in environmental planning. We sought to elucidate the reciprocal determination of the various cultures, social relationships, and spatial relations. The corpus contains 39 interviews, 949 completed questionnaires, 187 observation sheets, and documents from several sources (departments of urban planning, the journals of concerned parties, administrative reports). In addition to definig the physical activities, this work presents the profiles of the practitioners and identifies the various landscapes of experience. Four cases studies reconstruct the differences in scale, as well as the contradictory legitimacies that are involved (public/private, risk/security, sustainable development, etc. ). Beyond all discourse, is the Upper-Normandy coastline the object of "integrated management" ? What types of sharing and division do the recreational usages of this coastal area reflect ?

Texto completoBetween 440 B. C. And 96 A. D. , Corinth’s territory met several evolutions marked by the will and the political choices of the city. The independent Corinth fought against Athenian, Spartan, Theban and Macedonian hegemonies. But, with the decline of its liberty and its control on its territory, the city fought resolutely on the Macedonian side against Achaeans and Romans, then blindly on the Achaean side against the Romans. The latter finally destroyed her and dismantled its territory with Sikyonian help after 146 B. C. Even if the ex-Corinthian territory could have been centuriated, it is only in 44 B. C. With the birth of the Colonia Laus Iulia Corinthiensis that revive the political, juridical and territorial existence of Corinth. Organized by a centuriation, the Corinthian plain offered a better viability for their farmers. The Flavians who rebuild the city and reorganize its territory at the end of the first century will bring about the last important change

Texto completoIn a sahelian region made more precarious by the persitent drought, the new use of dams seems to reassure decision-makers, who in irrigated culture, see the best means self-sufficieney in food. Yet, the development of this technology in an environment, which, up to now, is ignorant of hydro-agricultural traditions, implies good quality training capable of making it popular. . . So, in this study centered upon the mauritanean bank of the middle valley of the Sénégal river, we try and show the risky aspect of irrigation just now. This situation is the result of a lack of good training. The variable technico economy element predominates, whereas the human dimension, the real countrymen's participation are neglected. Texto completoOur thesis concern the upper part of the river Seine between the towns of Bar and Montereau. The study presented focuses on the morphological adjustments of an underfit stream. These adjustments are regarded as river responses to spatial and temporal variations in water and sediment discharge or to noticeable modification of the channel internal geometry (cross-section, longitudinal profil and planform). The methodological approach which has been chosen for this study gives great importance to an analysis of the channel evolution and fluvial processes in a short (1 year), medium (10-12 years) and long 13-14 years) time scales. Before apprehending the modes and rhytms of the channel changes, we examine in the first part of the thesis the influence of the geomorphological setting (chapter 1) and flow regime (chapter 2) on the physical structure as well as on the hydrosystem functionning. Particular attention is given to the hydro-morphological caracterisation and hydraulic conductivity of the floodplain. In the second part, three aspects are examined : lateglacial and holocene evolution of the floodplain (chapter 3), historical changes in meander pattern (chapter 4) and morphological consequences of engineering works (chapter 5). Essentially based on stratigraphic and sedimentologic analyses of sampled boreholes, the study of the river activity during holocene shows that the present floodplain relief has been definitely constructed during the sub-boreal and the sub-atlantic periods with the deposition of a 1. 25 to 1. 75m thick silty-clay fill by vertical aggradation. At a secular time scale, the comparison and the analysis of river courses, with a series of computerized programs, reveal a noticeable elongation of channel centerlines in a period of about 160 years (1828-1990). The channel elongation is associated with an increasing complexity of the meander pattern and the reorganisation of the structure of curvature upstream and downstream from troyes. These natural changes are disturbed since the second half of the seventieth century by successive engineering works, particularly by those undertaken during the 1970s. In the third and last part, channel adjustments are examined at a time scale equivalent to an annual hydrologic cycle

Texto completoThe study focuses on an exploration of the integration time of recently-recruited professionals who identify themselves as homosexual or bisexual. Based on the qualitative analysis, we draw the general hypothesis that the processes of integration, organisational socialisation, and the construction of a future career path that are influenced both by the presence of heterosexist norms and perceived discrimination in the workplace as well as by sexual identity previously built in other parts of life. Our data were collected from twelve self-identified LGB young people who recently recruited in the workplace in the transportation and law using two studies: the first conducted with informal interviews to study the meaning given to subjective experience before and during the integration period in the organisation, and the second built from IMIS interviews to understand better the identity dynamics by analysing the subjective relationships between the individual and his environment. The results highlight that heterosexist norms remain dominant and show non-neutrality in the part of the professional world where the conversations include aspects of private life. From the moment of their arrival in the organisation, the young LGB people confront a dilemma between dissimulating and divulging their sexual identity, which requires identity management strategy handling to tackle different forms of discrimination and perceived homophobia. Among the identity management strategies, dissimulation based on pretending or avoiding of sexual orientation are the strategies that are used in the majority to avoid the different forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation that are anticipated in the workplace

Texto completoThe first part of this thesis describes the evolution of the coast from Ouljien. Different areas testify for a Neolithic human occupation including a great number of life places on alluvial and colluvial formations dating back to the superior soltanian. The second part proposes a description of the cliffs in the area. The evolution shows local risks for the northern areas of Safi. The harbor development in that city has entailed an ablation in the southern area of the main pier. The frenetic exploitation of the beaches sand has increased the coast limits moving back like in Sidi Bou Denyane. The third part lists the different seaside resources, describes how they are managed and asks questions about that management. Then it shows the various pollution sources along the coast and attempts to analyze the consequences on the environment. The fourth part is an atlas helping to the protection of this environment in case of oil pollution

Texto completoIn Lower Normandy, knowledge of the hydrosedimentary dynamics of rivers before and during the installation of the numerous hydraulic installations since the Roman period remains very fragmentary. Little was known about the rates of erosion and sedimentation that have occurred over the last two millennia and how climatic and anthropogenic controls have influenced these processes. Thus, the challenge of this phD is to understand and measure the role of the inherited structures and operating in the current functioning of the rivers of Lower Normandy in order to help with their contemporary management. To provide answers, geomorphological and geoarchaeological researches has been carried out in several valleys. These studies make it possible to highlight the weight of the hydraulic installations and in particular the developments related to the mills in the setting up of floodplains. Indeed, the complete structuring and management of the watercourse since the Middle Ages artificialized riverbed forms and slopes, and partitioned rivers favoring lateral stability and overflow sedimentation in the floodplain conducting in the development of completely regulated rivers. The installation of mills is accompanied locally by a simplification of the river course. At the acme of the equipment there was a mill every 2,500 meters along the rivers of Lower Normandy. These transformations mean that a large part of current courses are artificial. These structures and the increase of the overbank silt sedimentation for 1000 years are at the origin of the establishment of a dynamic equilibrium resulting in the hydrosedimentary forms of the present rivers which are largely inherited. The abandonment of the management of the hydraulic structures and their destruction during the last fifty years comes to question this balance
