Smith, Linda M. "Educational Intervention: Effects on Heart Disease Risk Factor Knowledge Among African Americans". ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1627.

Texto completo
Resumen
Abstract Fatal coronary heart disease among African Americans is associated with a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Research has indicated that CVD risk factor knowledge and the prevalence of ideal CVH both persist at suboptimal levels. However, few researchers have investigated the relationship between culturally-tailored community-based heart health sessions, short-term knowledge acquisition of CVD risk factors, and the awareness of the American Heart Association's (AHA's) CVH construct. The purpose of this cross-sectional, secondary analysis study was to examine the interplay between these variables in an urban African American sample. Guided by social cognitive theory, the study analyzed de-identified data (data sets of demographic characteristics and Heart Disease Facts Questionnaire) from participant responses collected at multiple community sites to assist in the planning of future health programs. Multiple community sites were randomized into an intervention (n = 50) or comparison group (n = 57). Pearson's correlation and multiple regression were used to analyze data. Knowledge was higher for intervention group participants (β =.44, p = .001) and tended to be higher for those with more education (β = .20, p = .06) and those with less income (β = -.22, p = .07). Notably, most participants (73%) reported awareness of the AHA construct, CVH. The results support culturally-tailored interventions as a useful strategy for CVD risk reduction. The implication for social change is that initiatives at the community-level may positively impact CVH in minority/ethnic communities and subsequently impact CVD disparities.

Hyacinth, Hyacinth Idu. "Predictors of Knowledge of Stroke and Intent to Call 911 Among African Americans". ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/444.

Texto completo
Resumen
Stroke is associated with significant health disparity and predominantly affects the elderly. Stroke outcome is significantly improved if an individual is able to get "clot-bursting" medication. A significant predictor of an on-time arrival to the emergency room for treatment in the event of a stroke is the ability to accurately recognize stroke signs and symptoms. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors (demographic, socioeconomic, and educational) that predict the knowledge of stroke signs/symptoms and intent to call 911 in the event of a stroke. The study was grounded in the social ecological theoretical model and analyzed archived data from 11,537 African Americans to answer the research questions. Multivariable analysis and chi-square analysis for trend were done to determine the predictors of knowledge of stroke signs and symptoms, intent to call 911, and their respective trends. Results show that respondents who were 18-39 years of age were less likely to have a low to no knowledge (OR = 0.46, CI = 0.27 - 0.80), while those who had a high school (OR = 1.95, CI = 1.28 - 2.96) or less than high school (OR = 2.83, CI = 2.03 - 3.96) level of education were more likely to have low to no knowledge of stroke signs and symptoms. Further, while males were less likely (OR = 0.65, CI = 0.64 - 0.66), respondents age 40-64 years (OR = 1.87, CI = 1.14 - 3.09), and those with moderate to adequate knowledge of stroke (OR = 1.39, CI = 1.18 - 1.65), were more likely to say they intend to call 911 in the event of a stroke. This study may lead to policies to improve stroke knowledge among the elderly. Targeted stroke education based on age, education, and socioeconomic status should be a component of such policy. Additionally, this study may lead to the provision of sidewalks and health education programs to improve risk factor control and could thus impact stroke incidence.

Gamboa, Luisyana De Amor. "The Perceptions, Knowledge, Benefits and Barriers of Hispanics Regarding the Dietary Guidelines for Americans". UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/foodsci_etds/37.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: Hispanics are the largest minority group in the U.S. and by the year 2060 the number of Hispanics is projected to double. They are disproportionately affected by obesity and chronic diseases which translate into decreased quality of life, loss of work opportunities and perceptions of injustice for the Hispanic population. The Dietary Guidelines (DG) provide information to help Americans make healthy food and physical activity choices and if followed can be a means of reducing the health disparity gap. However, culturally relevant recommendations specific to Hispanics’ health and nutritional habits are often lacking. The purpose of this study was to examine Hispanics’ knowledge, perceptions, benefits and barriers to the recommendations in the DG for Americans, Choose MyPlate, and the Department of Health and Human Services physical activity guidelines. Methods: A qualitative research design was used. Focus groups were conducted in Spanish and audiotapes were transcribed and then, translated into English. Thematic analysis was used to identify different key concepts subgrouping these topics according to common emergent themes. Results: A total of 24 participants took part in the study. Participants viewed healthy eating in terms of portion sizes. They viewed the DG as helpful but felt they needed more information to follow the guidelines. Several barriers were identified in following the MyPlate: lack of availability of healthy, fresh, inexpensive grocery options in Hispanic neighborhoods. Participants described the benefits of physical activity as related to improved mental health and quality of life such as looking and feeling better. Conclusion and Implications: Promoting nutrition education that is culturally and linguistically appropriate for Hispanics might help facilitate the adoption of the DG and MyPlate recommendations. Also, improving the design of existing low-income neighborhoods is still a challenge to improve participation in physical activity among Hispanics’.

Angosta, Alona. "Coronary Heart Disease Knowledge and Risk Factors among Filipino-American's Connected to Primary Care Services". Diss., University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/22042.

Texto completo
Resumen
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death of Filipino-Americans (FAs). Despite the growing numbers of FAs in the United States, little is known about their CHD knowledge and risk factors. The purposes of this study were to examine the baseline knowledge and risk factors of CHD among FAs and to describe the relationships between knowledge, sociodemographic, and socioeconomic characteristic variables of FAs between the ages of 35-75 years. The study sample consisted of 120 FAs (N = 120) who were connected to primary care services. Data were collected from three primary care clinics in Las Vegas, Nevada between the months of May and July, 2010. Participants completed the Demographics and the Heart Disease Fact Questionnaire (HDFQ) forms on CHD knowledge and CHD risk factors. Descriptive statistics, item response frequencies, and t-tests revealed most FAs were knowledgeable about CHD. The mean CHD knowledge scores of the sample was 15.8 (SD = 4.26) out of the 21 CHD knowledge total score points. When knowledge scores were compared between men and women, women had higher CHD knowledge scores than men (t = 2.438, p = .016). Descriptive statistics and item response frequencies also revealed FAs were at an increased risk of CHD. Many of them had CHD risk factors: Lack of exercise (65.8%), hypertension (50%), dyslipidemia (36.7%), abdominal adiposity (27.5%), Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (25%), overweight (22.5%), and smoking (10%). Gender, education, and income were significantly correlated with CHD knowledge, however, gender (b = .190, t = 2.21, p = .029) and education (b = .256, t = 2.85, p = .005) were the best predictors of CHD knowledge. CHD risk factors are highly prevalent among FAs. Implications for practice should focus on primary and secondary preventions. Further research is warranted to explore the impact of health behavior, culture, sociodemographic/socioeconomic factors on CHD.

Resumen

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with knowledge, overall and for sodium, of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) among Dietetic Interns in Southern California. Specifically, a survey assessed whether Interns’ knowledge is related to their self-efficacy related to applying the DGA, belief that the DGA is a trusted resource for nutritional advice, eating patterns, and sodium intake behaviors. The survey was created for this particular project and administered via Qualtrics online Software. Pearson correlations demonstrated that there were statistically significant, positive correlations between self-efficacy and knowledge of the DGA, overall and for sodium. These results suggest that Interns’ self-efficacy may be related to their knowledge of the DGA, overall and for sodium.

McDade, Regina Y. "The Relationship Between Spiritualilty, Knowledge and Tuberculosis (TB) Medication Adherence Among African Americans And Haitians". FIU Digital Commons, 2010. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/267.

Texto completo
Resumen
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease and nonadherence to medication can lead to new cases, multi-drug resistant TB, or potential death. Additionally, healthcare professionals and individuals with TB’s knowledge of the disease and medication adherence are crucial for successful completion of medication therapy. Patient education is one of the most important aspects of care provided in healthcare settings (CDC, 1994). TB tends to disproportionally affect minority and economically disadvantaged patient populations. The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the relationship between spirituality, knowledge, and TB medication adherence among African Americans and Haitians. The primary research question was: What is the relationship between spirituality, knowledge and TB medication adherence among African Americans and Haitians? Quantitative data were gathered from 33 questionnaires and analyzed by two ANOVAs and four chi square analyses. The null hypothesis was not rejected; there was not a statistically significant relationship between spirituality and TB medication adherence (p =.208) among the study’s African Americans and Haitians. Qualitative data concerning participants’ knowledge of TB, gathered from 16 individual interviews further informed this analysis. Secondary research questions examined the role of spirituality, knowledge of TB and medication adherence among African Americans and Haitians. Four common themes emerged across both groups to answer the secondary research questions. Interviews revealed the themes: (a) God is in control, (b) stigmatization of TB, (c) lack of knowledge, and (d) fear of death. The theme lack of knowledge about TB was found to contribute to stigmatization of TB patients. However, in this study stigma and lack of knowledge were related to initial denial of symptoms and delayed diagnosis, but not found to be related to TB medication adherence. This study could help adult educators and health educators enhance their educational interventions, develop a better understanding of adult learning, resulting in early diagnosis and treatment ultimately decreasing transmission of TB, drug resistance, and potential death. Educators should be aware that TB patients’ spirituality may be an important part of how they cope with having TB. A larger scale study, conducted at multiple locations should be conducted to extend the findings of this small scale exploratory study. Further studies should be done to better determine what patient, healthcare provider and health care system factors might mediate relationships that may exist between lack of knowledge of TB, stigma and TB medication adherence.

Tapia, Javier Campos. "Cultural reproduction: Funds of knowledge as survival strategies in the Mexican-American community". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185619.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Mexican American population in the United States, as all other human groups, employ a number of strategies and practices in order to ensure the maintenance and continuation of its members. These strategies are culturally derived, and they have been created by the interaction of people's practices with the social, economic, and political forces of the larger environment. Mexican American culture is reproduced across generations through the enactment of historically constituted social practices or funds of knowledge. These practices are "acted out" by actors within the domain of the household or the family in its relation to the capitalist system. In order to understand cultural reproduction in the Mexican American community, the structure and operation of four households were examined. The practices used by people to meet household members' sustenance, shelter, education, household management, and emotional/psychological needs are explored. Household members practices were divided in three domains: economic, social/recreational, and ceremonial/religious. In a sense then, Mexican Americans are enculturated by carrying out activities appropriate to the immediate cultural setting. In this social setting, children learn appropriate ways of behaving by interacting with other people whom, through verbal and nonverbal ways, teach them the norms appropriate to their cultural group. In addition, children spend a great part of the day in another setting (the school). This setting, as part of the larger environment, influences household members practices, but the institution is affected in return. The interplay of these factors affects students' academic achievement.

Barbour, Leslie. "Knowledge, Beliefs, and Perceptions About Tuberculosis Among Haitian Immigrants and Haitian Americans Living in Miami-Dade County, Florida". ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4835.

Texto completo
Resumen
Tuberculosis (TB) kills 1.7 million people each year, and 1/3rd of the world's population is estimated to have latent TB. It was once the deadliest disease in the United States but is now relatively rare and, if treated properly, it is curable. Migrants from TB-endemic countries, such as Haiti, are one source of TB transmission to the US, and the prevalence of TB remains high and is increasing in Little Haiti, Florida. Data on the knowledge and perceptions of Haitian immigrants and Haitian Americans about TB is inadequate. The purpose of this qualitative research was to study the TB-related knowledge, beliefs, and perceptions of Haitian Americans and Haitian immigrants living in Miami, FL. The health belief model formed the theoretical framework of this study. Thirty male and female Haitian American and Haitian immigrants were interviewed. Phenomenological research was used, and open coding was conducted to analyze the data. Results showed that a large majority of the participants in this sample were knowledgeable about the nature of TB - its spread, symptoms, seriousness, and how to get information about it, but many were concerned about the social stigma attached to having the disease. Recommendations include the development of outreach, education and prevention programs through doctors and other health care professionals, as well as religious and community leaders, in order to increase awareness of the disease, enhance access to treatment, minimize stigma and reduce the incidence of the disease.

Texto completo
Resumen
Regardless of the advances that have been made in stroke research and treatment and the overall decrease in stroke mortality, the stroke mortality rate for African Americans is still high at 45.2/100,000 and is still the leading cause of adult disability. Knowledge of the risk factors of stroke is paramount to reducing the morbidity and mortality of stroke, but knowledge of stroke risk factors has been found to be suboptimal in the African American population. The purpose of this study was to examine if there is a relationship between the knowledge, perception, and sources of stroke information of risk factors for stroke. The theoretical framework for this study was knowledge, attitude, and practice model and the health belief model. A cross-sectional quantitative approach was used for this study, and data was obtained through in-person administration of a questionnaire to willing participants in two South District Cook County, Illinois, health centers, two churches, a barber shop, and a beauty shop. A total of 273 respondents that consisted of 42% men (n = 113) and 58% women (n = 160) provided valid responses. Chi-Square test of association showed a statistical significance between source of stroke information and previous stroke/transient ischemic attack at Ï?2 (1) = 29.133, p = 0.001. Multiple regression analysis model showed a statistically significant result of perception and stroke, F (14, 259) = 22.692, p < 0.0005. This study found that stroke education should go beyond traditional medical risk factors to also explore people's perception of preventive practices. This study will contribute to social change by providing support for targeted stroke education not only on knowledge but also perception of preventive practices in the African American population.

Resumen
Despite his importance as a senior Al-Qaeda spokesman, no detailed examination exists of Adam Yahiye Gadahn’s employment of fiqh al-jihad—that branch of Islamic jurisprudence regulating the lawful waging of jihad—to condemn or condone violence committed in the name of Al-Qaeda. This article first provides a detailed exposition of Gadahn’s sharia-based critique of affiliates’ conduct deemed by him in violation of Islamic law and involving the commission of major sins. Second, Gadahn’s conception of fiqh al-jihad is contextualized and contrasted with the comprehensive fiqh al-jihad-based critiques produced by respected militant Islamist scholars. A key finding here is that Gadahn (unlike these scholars) illicitly truncates the application of fiqh al-jihad with the result that he demands sharia-compliance when criticizing intra-Islamist violence yet ignores sharia-compliance when targeting America and Americans. Third, reasons are considered for this incoherent application of fiqh al-jihad and attempted Islamic legalization of anti-American mass casualty terrorist attacks. Finally, the discussion concludes with implications for counter-Al-Qaeda strategy.

Resumen
The study abroad field has progressed into an innovative and exciting stage given the high- rise of interest throughout the last twenty years. Study abroad is not showing signs of losing momentum concerning student interest or academic research. Numerous variables affect the direction the field is heading. This study intends to illuminate some of those variables through classifying study abroad results. This research study is part of the 21st century phenomena regarding increased travel through study abroad programs. It investigates the results of U.S. students’ study abroad experiences in Spain and Australia, through identifying aspects of the knowledge outcomes, changes in perspective, and the social, professional, and personal implications on a U.S. student after returning home from such an endeavor. It is critical to recognize and comprehend student results from the study abroad perspective to provide higher education institutions, study abroad companies, educators, students, and researchers with a contextual, first-hand encounter through the eyes of the student. This student analysis provides a greater framework for various stakeholders to continue the promotion of studying abroad, while enriching study abroad programs, and to continue the provision of breadth of opportunity for upcoming students interested.

Grant, Andrea M. "Hypertension knowledge, expectation of care, social support, and adherence to prescribed medications of African Americans with hypertension framed by the Roy adaptation model". Thesis, City University of New York, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3561785.

Texto completo
Resumen

Hypertension (HTN) prevalence in African Americans contribute to higher rates of disabilities and deaths from stroke, myocardial infarction, and end stage renal disease than all other racial groups in the United States. The major reason documented for these poor health outcomes is related to lower HTN control rates among African Americans compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Though overall HTN awareness, pharmacological treatments and control have significantly improved for all populations, studies found that rates of HTN control and adherence with anti-hypertensive medications are lower for African Americans compared to other subgroups.

Study Aims: The primary aim was to determine whether hypertension knowledge, expectation of care, and social support are predictors of adherence to prescribed medications while controlling for socioeconomic factors in the context of hypertension among African Americans.

Methods: A cross sectional quantitative approach was used. A secondary data analysis was conducted with 387 hypertensive African Americans. The Morisky Medication Adherence scale was used to measure adherence, internal consistency was established, (r=.61). The Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) was used to link HTN knowledge, expectations of care, social support, and socioeconomic factors with adherence to medications to provide an understanding of the process of adaptation. Logistic regressions were used to determine the relationships among the variables.

Results: The sample (N=387) was primarily female (76%) and men (24%). On average, participants scored high in knowledge about hypertension; mean knowledge score was .91 (SD = .09). Controlling for patient covariates, hypertension knowledge was not found to be a predictor of adherence to prescribed medications (p=.469). Expectation of care was found to be a predictor of adherence to prescribed medications (p=.008); social support was found to be a predictor of adherence to medications (p=.006).

Conclusion and Implications: This study supports findings regarding expectations of care, social support, and adherence to medication in African American patients with hypertension. The findings are useful for planning patient management initiatives specific to chronic disease such as hypertension.

Jackson, Stanita. "Caregivers' Perceptions of an Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease in African Americans". ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2290.

Texto completo
Resumen
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is significantly more prevalent among African Americans than within the general population, but rates of early detection are lower in the African American community. Researchers have demonstrated that both pessimistic Alzheimer's-directed health beliefs, and negative perceptions of the effectiveness and the accessibility of medical care act as barriers to care seeking by African American family members of individuals with the disease. Recent research into causal judgments made by potential caregivers about individuals with undiagnosed AD suggests that gender bias and errors in attribution may constitute covert barriers to both lay and professional interpretations regarding the need for cognitive assessment. This study used grounded theory to investigate whether African American family caregivers hold integrated, gender-distinct beliefs about causal attributions of their family member's cognitive decline which may contribute to a delay in care-seeking behaviors. The health belief model was used in conjunction with the attribution theory as the conceptual framework for understanding the data. Purposive sampling of geriatric and memory clinics, and a church was used to recruit eight family caregivers who participated in in-depth interviews. The results indicated that there is a significant lack of caregivers' knowledge and understanding of AD regardless of gender, and that this lack is linked to delays in diagnosis. These results may be used to support the development of a new theory of family caregivers' knowledge and understanding of AD. The social change implications include decreasing delayed diagnosis through increased educational awareness, community outreach programs, and universal mandatory cognitive testing of AD for at-risk individuals.

Resumen
The Center of Latin-American Studies of the University of Warsaw and its importance for the theme of the integration in Latin America are demonstrated starting from two different points of view: first, for the present time of the discussions around the integration and, second, for the need of organisms producing of scientific information about the relationship processes and Latin-American integration. Starting from that, the analysis agreed the Latin-American integration describing and characterizing the process. In the second moment, it is studied the institutional process of the Academic Centers of Research, analyzing the transformations, directions and general perspectives. After, it turn about the constitution of a concept of Latin-Americanism, the understanding of the adopted roads (orientations and thematic options) for the reach of the objectives projected in each academically space. Finally, the relationship is approached between CESLA and the Latin-American integration, reminding the conditions of creation of the Center and the social functions of the University, to which is linked. The methodology is used of primary sources, such as the creation documents and operation of CESLA and the existent agreements between this and the several Latin-American research centers, supporting this research. At the same time, the secondary sources, also of great relevance, they are the Polish bibliographical production and Latin-American on the main object of the research and interviews with government authorities and/or intellectuals of the two areas, as foundation that the different social agents posture on the theme is historical source of solid relevance. To conclude, it is assumed that an unanimous posture no exists in CESLA about the relationships and the Latin-American integration, including own intellectuals in Latin America. The variety of centers and objectives, the economical and political subjects around the creation and maintenance of the centers, the external influences in the result, the non use of the researches and the preexistence of some facilitators for the initiation of the centers do each one possesses unique characteristics, own to a specific reality, without losing the contact with the general context. In this context, CESLA appears as connection mechanism between the production and the use of the scientific knowledge, presenting possible sceneries, forming attitude and introducing a perspective of universalization of the knowledge, vectors capable to explain the current mentality exchanges.

Thesis advisor: Ramsay Liem
Underutilization of mental health services among Asian Americans is a pressing concern. It is possible that knowledge and beliefs about mental illness (a.k.a. “mental health literacy”) serve as barriers to seeking appropriate help, and that Asian cultural values plays a role in determining such attitudes. This study investigated the relationships among mental health literacy, attitudes towards mental health services, and adherence to Asian cultural values. A sample of 17 Caucasian and 22 Asian American college students completed a questionnaire including the Asian Values Scale, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale – Shortened Version, and four vignettes portraying depression, schizophrenia, alcohol dependency, and anorexia. Results indicated that Caucasians were slightly more likely to correctly recognize and identify mental illnesses than were Asian Americans. Causal attributions varied greatly across different mental disorders, and Asian Americans showed less positive attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help, and preferred to solve problems on their own or seek help from family or friends. The greatest barriers to treatment for Asian Americans were a fear of showing personal weakness and concern about stigma. Adherence to Asian cultural values was inversely associated with willingness to seek professional help, and with willingness to take medication for psychological problems
