Presidentvalet i USA baseras på personval istället för partival och detta personval inkluderar även presidentkandidatens partner. Presidentkandidaternas fruar diskuteras och analyseras idag lika mycket som presidentkandidaterna själva samtidigt som medierna diskuterar vilken av de tidigare presidentfruarna de kommer att efterlikna. Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att undersöka och analysera vilken retorik Michelle Obama och Ann Romney använder sig av i talen de ger på The Democratic National Convention respektive The Republican National Convention i ett försök att övertyga de amerikanska väljarna att deras man borde bli deras nästa president. Eftersom det visuella framträdandet bidrar till talets helhet ska även det undersökas och analyseras. Då Michelle Obama och Ann Romney har jämförts under hela valet görs det även här en komparativ analys av deras retorik samt deras visuella framträdande. En kvalitativ metod har valts för uppsatsen i form av en retorisk analys. Denna retoriska analys görs med hjälp av Karlbergs och Mrals (1998) retoriska modell. Resultatet visar att både Michelle Obama och Ann Romney använder sig mest av ethos och pathos i sina tal för att bygga tillit till publiken samt visa känslor. Undersökningens resultat visar även att de båda blir presidentkandidaternas surrogat till målgrupper som de inte når ut till vilket visar att presidentskapet är en två- persons- karriär där presidentfrun får stå för den feminina sidan medan presidentposten förbli maskulin. Resultatet visar även att den politiska kommunikationen inte behöver vara strikt politisk och att medierna spelar en stor roll i den politiska kommunikationen idag.
The presidential election in The United States is based on voting for an individual candidates rather than voting for a party and this vote includes the wife of the presidential candidate. The wives of presidential candidates are today equally discussed and analyzed, while the media also discusses which one of the previous presidential wives they are going to take after. The purpose of this thesis is to examine and analyze the rhetoric that Michelle Obama and Ann Romney uses in the speeches they give at The Democratic National Convention and The Republican National Convention in an effort to convince the American voters that their husband should be their next president. Since the visual appearance contributes to the speech as a whole this will also be examined and analyzed. Michelle Obama and Ann Romney have been compared throughout the whole election so a comparative analysis of their rhetoric and their visual appearance will also be made here. A qualitative approach has been chosen for this thesis in the form of a rhetorical analysis. This rhetorical analysis is done by using Karlberg and Mrals (1998) rhetorical model.. The results show that both Michelle Obama and Ann Romney used ethos and pathos the most in their speeches to build trust with the audience and to show emotions. The thesis results also show that they are surrogates to the presidential candidates in the way that they can reach target groups that the candidates cannot and with this showing that the presidency is a two-person career where the presidential wife to stands for the feminine side while the presidential post remains masculine. The results also show that political communication doesn’t have to be purely political, and that the media plays a major role in political communication today.

L’Église de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours, ou « Église mormone », émargea au cours de la première moitié du XIXe siècle dans une Amérique en proie à des mutations sociales et religieuses. Joseph Smith, son prophète-fondateur, l’inscrivit dès le départ dans une radicalité doctrinale en « protestant » les fondamentaux du christianisme tels qu’ils avaient été définis et acceptés auparavant. Il s’attira de ce fait le courroux des « Églises établies », en particulier de celles du protestantisme évangélique. Malgré une américanité foncière, sa religion fut affublée de l’étiquette « un-american » et ses disciples furent persécutés, poussés à édifier leur « Sion » sur la « Frontière », puis dans l’Ouest, à la périphérie de la société américaine. Contrairement à bien d’autres groupes religieux ou de mouvements utopiques, les « mormons » réussirent à transformer leur marginalisation en force, développant par la même occasion des particularismes qui firent d’eux un « peuple à part ». Or, ils s’éveillèrent aussi à l’évidence que pour échapper aux persécutions, ils devaient se positionner au cœur de l’action politique du pays. L’investiture de Mitt Romney par le Parti républicain pour l’élection présidentielle de 2012 témoigne de leur réussite. Mais comment cela fut-il possible ? Romney fut aussi l’objet d’une formidable opposition religieuse au cours de la phase des primaires du Parti qui n’est pas sans rappeler celles fomentées par les protestants contre les catholiques Al Smith (1928) et John F. Kennedy (1960). Comment expliquer ce refus de voir un mormon à la Maison blanche ? Nous répondons dans cette thèse à ces questions, et à bien d’autres, notamment en illustrant le fait que Romney, J. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or “Mormon Church,” emerged during the first half of the 19th century while America was undergoing social and religious changes. Right from the outset, Joseph Smith, the prophet-founder, set the Church in a radical opposition, “protesting” the dogma of traditional Christianity as they had been defined and accepted for centuries. He attracted the ire of the “established Churches” of Evangelical Protestantism. In spite of the profound Americanness of his religion, it was labeled un-american and his followers were persecuted, driven out, and forced to build their “Zion” on the Frontier, and then in the West, on the margins of American society. Unlike several other religious groups and utopian movements, the “Mormons” managed to turn their marginalization into strength, developing thereby traits that made them “a peculiar people.” Yet, they also realized that to escape persecutions, they had to be at the center of the nation’s politics. The nomination of Mitt Romney by the Republican Party for the 2012 presidential election testifies to their success. How did that come about? Romney was also the object of a sturdy religious opposition during the Party’s primaries that reminded the ones set up by the Protestants in the cases of Al Smith (1928) and of John F. Kennedy (1960). How does one account for this refusal to see a Mormon in the White House? In this dissertation, we answer these questions, and to many more, particularly as we illustrate the fact that Romney, J. F. Kennedy and Al Smith had a predecessor in Reed Smoot, a Mormon apostle whose election in 1902 to the U.S. Senate set the tone for the greatest religiously and politically-motivated trial ever in American history

The study The Rome in the hands of journalists: a critical discourse analysis of how Roma people are represented in Dagens Nyheter before and after recognition as a national minority examines the swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter´s reporting of the Roma people in 1998 and 2018. The aim is to find out if the recognition as a national minority in 2000 has created some form of change in the journalists' representation of the Roma people and how it is expressed.  The method that has been used is a critical discourse analysis, where the main focus has been on the language the journalists have used and how it influenced the larger social context. The study uses a theoretical framework that includes theories that surronds the power of media, representation of the language, stereotypes and other psychological aspects which can explain the mindset of the journalists.  The analysis found both differences and similarities in the reporting of the Roma people since they became a recognised national minority in Sweden. Still, in the discourse of 2018 it can be seen that they mostly are portrayed in av negative and stereotyped way. But it can also be noticed that small steps within the social discourse has been taken. Especially in the usage of language where the Roma people in 1998 almost always where named as ”gypsies” which almost never occured in 2018. It can also be seen that in the discourse of 2018 that the Roma people get to speak for themselves in a less stereotyped way than in 1998. The study found that it is only then, when the Roma is depicted as an individual and get to tell its own story, old stereotypes can be disregarded.

The image of George Romney presented in his early biographies is of a successful society portraitist by day but the creator of `sublime and infernal reveries' at night by candlelight. Today these passionate designs from literature are characterized as proto- Romantic but, paradoxically, they were created within the context of a disciplined renaissance-humanist tradition. Romney's amateur and professional literary friends supplied him with a profusion of potential subjects and produced eulogistic verses about the artist and his works, stressing his sensitivity, seclusion, humble origins and natural genius. Taking their cue from the formulaic writings about artists from antiquity and the renaissance, the poets applied to Romney legends concerning artistic predispositions towards melancholy and emotional depth and provided a format in which his works of sentimental or tragic themes could be appreciated. The desired end result of their concerted and contrived enterprise was a fame for the artist which also reflected glory on the writers. Post-Romantic-historical methodologies have taken for granted that deference on the part of the artist t wards a visors and patrons carried negative associations and have underestimated the collaborative nature of creativity in the eighteenth century. George Romney's career demonstrates that even within changing social and creative orders, and a long-side more modem impulses, longstanding traditions involving a close association between artists and advisors, striving for mutual benefits, survived well into the early-Romantic period. Examination of the extensive money primary source material, including correspondence with literary friends and his jottings on subjects and artistic theories in notebooks is undertaken within the context o f an analysis of Romney's works and the means of their promulgation. This thesis offers a new interpretation of Romney's career and argues that artistic production in late eighteenth- century Britain cannot be fully understood unless the ambitions and methods of the literary figures advising artists are considered.

This study is a quantitative content analysis of the Facebook and Twitter communication of the Obama and Romney campaigns on seven dates within the 30 days prior to the 2012 presidential election. Specific rhetorical techniques are explored for similarities or differences in how these techniques have appeared in political communication in legacy media and how they are expressed in social media. Repetition, collective language, self-reference language and Benoit's functions of attack, acclaim and defend are examined. Additionally, the study identified what topics each candidate emphasized in their social media communication. Findings show that both candidates used repetition to reinforce key messages. The use of attacks, acclaims and defenses bore some similarities to uses in legacy media. However, the primary focuses by both candidates centered on motivating citizens to show support for the candidate and get out the vote. Few policy issues appeared in the communication of either candidate.

Under 2013 och 2014 har det skett en ökning av antalet EU-medborgare som tigger i Sverige. Det har varit ett hett ämne för offentlig debatt och åsikterna har varit många och delade. Det finns flera obesvarade frågor och situationen är komplex. Behovet av kunskap i ämnet ses därför som stort. Syftet med denna uppsats var att studera medias framställning av tiggeri och romer, samt att genom intervjuer ge en bild av den verklighet som romerna i Umeå upplever. Dessa framställningar jämfördes sedan mot varandra. För att göra detta har en mediestudie gjorts där 49 tidningsartiklar från dagstidningarna Dagens Nyheter och Västerbottens Kuriren granskats. Det har gjorts tre intervjuer med romer. En kvalitativ innehållsanalys har använts för att analysera samtligt material. Mediestudien visade att tidningarnas framställning av romer och tiggeri främst handlar om romernas utsatta situation, samt diskussioner rörande ansvarsfrågan. Intervjuerna visade att det som främst präglar romernas verklighet är utsattheten, samt att familjen har stor betydelse.

Syftet med uppsatsen är att visa och diskutera resultatet av en undersökning kring användningen av historiska romaner i historieundervisningen. Undersökningen behandlar två klasser i grundskolans sjunde år och deras arbete med läsning av historiska romaner kopplade till händelser under andra världskriget. En studie av ett liknande projekt i två gymnasieklasser ingår i uppsatsen och utgör ett komparativt material. Utifrån detta analyseras i vilken utsträckning historiska romaner är användbara i historieundervisningen och vilken funktion litteraturen kan ha, både ur elevers och lärares perspektiv. Ämnesdidaktiska teorier kopplas till arbetsmetoden med fokus på elevers inlärning. Begrepp som historiemedvetande, empati och identitet diskuteras, och hur dessa kan utvecklas när man kompletterar läroböcker med historiska romaner. Det är den historiska romanens kompletterade roll vi behandlar, då vi kommit fram till att den litterära framställningen är värdefull för att levandegöra historien, men den kan inte ensam skapa en helhetsbild av det förflutna. Det är först när eleverna kan koppla sin läsning till ett faktabaserat stoff, oftast tillhandahållet av läroboken, som ett eftersträvansvärt resultat kan nås.

This study explores the agrarian economy of Romney Marsh and its hinterland, c. 1730-90. It offers a fresh contribution to current knowledge in respect of landlord-tenant relations, landholding structures and farming practice. Some 60 years are covered, framed within a wider context embracing two distinct and contrasting economic phases that characterized the long eighteenth century. Special reference to the Knatchbull family affords in-depth insight into an eighteenth century Kentish landed estate, whose interests lay on the marsh and its hinterland. There is an appraisal of the character and values of Sir Wyndham Knatchbull in his official and unofficial roles at the head of the community. Aspects of the Home Farm economy of Mersham Hatch are explored. Particular attention is paid to landlord-tenant relations, and the multi-dimensional nature of negotiations for substantial holdings on Walland Marsh. The impact of a windfall inheritance is seen when, from 1763, the seventh baronet succeeded to the estate. Using early Land Tax evidence for the region, there is a comprehensive analysis of landownership and land occupation structures, c. 1746-90. An unusually large area is covered, for an exceptionally early period, adding substantially to current knowledge. Marsh tax evidence discloses landownership and land occupation structures on Walland/Denge, 1738-91. Used in tandem with the tax listings, the wider interests of ‘dual-regional’ farmers are more fully appreciated, and for whom knowledge has hitherto been confined to their operations on the marsh. These findings, together with the investigation of previously unexplored aspects of farming practice, offer fresh insight into the symbiotic relationship between the marsh and its hinterland. The influence of ties of social obligation and market-led considerations on landlord-tenant relations are recurring themes. On the marsh, tenant initiative and market demand are seen as the main driving forces that re-shaped patterns of landholding over the period.

Den här uppsatsen har anknytning, men ingen direkt koppling, till b-uppsatsen Invandrarsvenska – ett ungdomsspråk?, därför kan man se denna uppsats både som fristående och som en del av Invandrarsvenska – ett ungdomsspråk? I uppsatsen har jag valt att titta närmre på det litterära verket Ett öga rött av Jonas Hassen Khemiri, som från början skulle ha fått ett större utrymme i Invandrarsvenska – ett ungdomsspråk? Ett öga rött publicerades 2003 och blev snabbt en omtalad bok eftersom den inte var skriven på korrekt grammatisk svenska. Den är skriven på vad som kom att kallas ”invandrarsvenska”, en form av talspråk, där det svenska språket blandats med slang och ord från andra språk. Ett öga rött handlar om en ung pojke som söker svar på frågor om sin omgivning och identitet. Jag var intresserad av att se hur Ett öga rött kunde jämföras med en bok med liknande huvudkaraktär och handling skriven på svensk slang, om det fanns några likheter i språk, karaktärer och i handling, därför använder jag mig av Ronnie Sandahls bok Vi som aldrig sa hora, som precis som i Ett öga rött har en huvudkaraktär som söker svar på frågor om sin identitet. De båda böckerna har som sagt en ung pojke som huvudkaraktär, och de olika handlingarna beskriver deras liv och vardag utifrån olika dramatiska händelser. I uppsatsen jämför jag dessa litterära verk med utgångspunkt i två olika sorters berättande, två tonårspojkar som huvudkaraktärer, två olika författare och med ett antal frågor i bakhuvudet: Hur skriver unga tonårspojkar? Vad skriver de om? Finns det några skillnader mellan en tonårspojke med svenskt ursprung från en liten svensk stad och en tonårspojke med invandrarbakgrund från en förort till en storstad? Handlar det om identitetssökande? Om att vilja synas genom berättelsen? Att försöka förstå sig själv? Hjälpa andra förstå? Vad har författaren för syfte med boken? Vem tolkar och hur ska berättelsen tolkas?
This thesis is based on narrative as identity creator, how identity formation is based on storytelling, narrator, author and main characters in a literary work, focusing on language and group identity, but also how the reader can identify with the narrator and characters. The thesis compares the two youth novels Ett öga rött, by Jonas Hassen Khemiri and Vi som aldrig sa hora, by Ronnie Sandahl, written in “immigrant Swedish” and Swedish slang, where each novel is based on the search of identity of a teenage boy living in a Swedish suburb or a small town. The analysis is thereby based on whether there are any differences and similarities in these two books depending on storytelling, storytellers, storytelling technique and how the characters identities are formed by the author’s storytelling language and what the significance of this really is for each novel.

This thesis is designed to further our understanding of Hungarian-speaking Romany (Romungro) culture and, in the context of the post-communist transformation of Hungarian society and economy, to comment on how the values of the Romany community conflict with those of an NGO, the Dignity Foundation, working in the field of Romany community development. This thesis will contribute to a hitherto neglected aspect of the Hungarian Romany experience by providing an ethnography of Hungarian-speaking Roma. The thesis examines meanings of the terms Cigany (Gypsy), testver (extended family) and zsivany (crooked) behaviour in the context of the everyday life of a rural settlement. From enjoying near full employment under state socialism, the Roma in Hungary now find themselves in a situation that sociologists have presented as one of underclass formation. Evidence of entrepreneurial activity presented in the thesis questions the suggestion that all rural Romany groups are forming a post-communist underclass. The significantly increased role of the civil sector in issues of welfare is one of the most prominent features of the post-communist transformation and this thesis examines some of the consequences of this change. Drawing on the Dignity Foundation's experiences in this community, the thesis comments on the chasm between the values of the NGO and those of the community, in particular their different perceptions of trust and the significance that this has for the effectiveness of projects designed, in part, to encourage local-level civil society. The thesis suggests that local values must be respected by NGOs and others working with Roma for there to be effective dialogue.

Svensson, C & Svensson, M. Romer och omvårdnad. En litteraturstudie om specifika faktorer som kan ha betydelse för romer i samband med omvårdnad. Examensarbete i omvårdnad 10 poäng. Malmö högskola: Hälsa och samhälle, Utbildningsområde omvårdnad, 2005.Omvårdnad av romer i vården orsakar många gånger konflikter och missförstånd. Syftet med föreliggande litteraturstudie var att undersöka vilka specifika faktorer som kan ha betydelse för romer i samband med omvårdnad. Teoretisk referensram för arbetet är Madeleine Leiningers Sunrisemodell. Metoden för litteraturstudien var att kvalitetsgranska sju vetenskapliga artiklar enligt Polits m fl (2001) kriterier för vetenskaplighet. Resultaten visar att flera faktorer har betydelse för romer i samband med omvårdnad, bl a Familj och släkt, Ålders- och könshierarki, Fördomar och osämja, Kulturella värderingar och livsstil, och Hälsa och sjukvård. Det framgår tydligt att hälso- och sjukvårdspersonal kan förbättra och utveckla omvårdnaden av romer med hjälp av kulturella förkunskaper.

The aim of the following review was to investigate what specific factors that may be of importance to romanies in conjunction with nursing care. The theoretical framework of the paper is Madeleine Leininger’s Sunrise Model. The methodology is based on a literature review consisting of seven articles, which have been reviewed according to scientific criteria set up by Polit et al (2001). The results show that several factors have an impact in conjunction with nursing care: Family, Age and Gender related hierarchies, Prejudices and Ill will, Cultural values and Lifestyle, and Health and Health Care. It is evident that increased cultural knowledge may improve and develop the competence of health care personnel, and improve the nursing care of romanies.

The present dissertation investigates the use of the fantastic and its functions in contemporary prose, the initial hypothesis being that the fantastic is not historically exhausted, but continues to be productive. The major part of this study consists of a close reading of four novels printed between 1995 and 2001: Marie Hermanson’s Värddjuret (1995), Majgull Axelsson’s Aprilhäxan (1997), Karen Duve’s Regenroman (1999) and Elfriede Kern’s Schwarze Lämmer (2001). Tzvetan Todorov’s definition of the fantastic as structural ambiguity is fundamental to the dissertation. In order not to bind the definition to a normative concept of genre, the fantastic is in this study considered as a narrative strategy. The dissertation’s analyses demonstrate that in these contemporary novels there is considerable variation of narrative devices, as well as of intertextual motifs deriving from the ‘archive’ provided by the tradition of the fantastic. The fantastic is to a great extent intertextual, but does not merely function as a “signal of fiction” in a postmodern game where ambiguity is no longer relevant. Instead, the narrated world in these novels is characterized by a deeply-rooted ambivalence, heterogeneity and instability. Both attractive and dangerous, the fantastic corresponds to a meeting with “the other” and the unknown, while dampening the conflict between the supernatural and the natural so clearly seen in Todorov. What is central is not the crisis of perception undergone by the novel’s characters as they choose between two opposing views of reality, but their mental state of mind. These characters are in a condition of “betwixt and between”, which in all four novels is linked to the theme of the artist. Via the fantastic, Regenroman initiates a confrontation with male myths of the artist and images of women. Schwarze Lämmer also engages the romantic fantastic tradition and investigates the link between adolescent delusions of grandeur and artistic creativity. Värddjuret, on the other hand, depicts the genesis of a female artist, while Aprilhäxan presents the female artist’s monstrous image of herself and fantasies of omnipotence. An additional function of the fantastic in these four novels is to thematize a concept of reality that is based, not on the contrast between the natural and the supernatural, but on the possibility of several different realities.

Resumen
The production of Romeo and Juliet took place at the Telus Theatre in Vancouver from 21st to the 30th of January 2010 as part of the UBC 2009-2010 program. It was directed by Catriona Leger, costumes by Carmen Alatorre, lighting by Conor Moore, original music by Mischelle Cuttler and Patrick Pennefather. Set design was done by myself as the main topic for this thesis. The word playground in the title points to both the play culture associated with the theatrical event as well as well as the physical space for play. Building off of the notion of the childhood playground, I sought to illuminate the theatrical space as one which is literally a place of play-not only as a space in which one views a play, but also a space for actors to physically play (that is to explore and create). The stage would not be a constricting place which limits the actors movements, but rather, a flexible and open space to perform ( a necessity, given the physicality of the show). The playground is for kids as the playground is for buffoons in my set. As I desired to deviate from the traditional notions of theatrical space, I also sought to break the conventions of traditions of Shakespearean staging, creating a non specific place or time and inviting the spectators into the sense of festivity. The shape of the theatre in combination with the design allowed for the actors to use the whole space whether it is in or between the audience, on top of a balcony or in the grid. Since this side-play was a necessary factor in eliminating the fourth wall, the space needed to be a seem-less integration between audience and actor to facilitate such interaction. Thus, the set was designed to crawl into the audience's space. By extending the existing architectural elements of the theatre and working them into the design the theatre became an unencumbered, expansive space for play.

“Låt romanen komma in – Transformativt lärande i gymnasieskolans litteraturundervisning“ är en litteraturdidaktisk studie i forskningsämnet pedagogik som tar syftestexten för litteraturundervisningen i det gymnasiala svenskämnet som utgångspunkt. Genom en förstudie där elva svensklärare och en skolbibliotekarie samtalar i fokusgrupper riktas projektet mot sitt huvudfokus som är en läsloggsintervention där 31 elever i gymnasiekursen Svenska 3 läser John Ajvide Lindqvists “Låt den rätte komma in” (Ordfront, 2004/2015). Med hjälp av begrepp från läsforskning (Rita Felski, “Uses of Literature”, Blackwell Publishing, 2008) och erfarenheter från förstudien för eleverna logg över sin läsning. Resultatet av läsloggsinterventionen visar att elevernas metareflektion hjälps framåt av begreppsanvändningen och att eleverna därmed tar steget in i en transformativ lärandeprocess. Licentiatavhandlingen innehåller en analys av den didaktiska potentialen för transformativt lärande med fokus på fokalisation och främmandegöring i Ajvide Lindqvists roman samt en praktisk modell för hur begreppsorienterad litteraturundervisning med läslogg på gymnasiet kan utformas.
The function of reading fictional texts in Swedish secondary school education has been questioned in public debate (e.g. Melin, 2016-07-17), even though the reading of fictional texts has been shown to be important to young people’s academic achievement (Jerrim & Moss, 2019). Swedish policy documents clearly state that upper secondary teaching of literature in the subject of Swedish is aimed at increasing the pupils’ self-awareness and their comprehension of experiences and perceptions of others (The Swedish National Agency of Education, 2011). However, results from a large-scale reading project show that Swedish teenagers find it difficult to reflect upon their own roles as readers of fictional texts (Nordberg, 2018). Therefore, this licentiate thesis targets upper secondary reading of fictional texts, and the possibility of using literary terminology pedagogically to visualize and develop pupils’ transformative learning processes. The overall research question posed is: - How can applied literary terminology be used in upper secondary literary studies todevelop pupils’ transformative learning processes? A pilot study was conducted based on three focus group-sessions with teachers and the librarian at an upper secondary school. The main study was based on reading journals written by pupils reading John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Låt den rätte komma in (2004) [Let the Right One In, 2008] as part of the Swedish 3 course. The methodological framework is inspired by participatory research. Consequently, this research-project uses an inclusive approach to the participants – 11 Swedish teachers, 1 librarian and 31 pupils – which means that they are considered as subjects rather than objects of knowledge. My own role in this project is tripartite: as a colleague, a teacher, and researcher. The pilot study was conducted in order to find out which possibilities and obstacles arose when the staff participants worked on teaching literature. The main study, within which the pupils are included as participants, focuses on advancing meta-perspectives of their own reading and made use of results from the pilot study and concepts derived from Felski’s (2008) ‘modes of textual engagement’. The pilot study revealed tensions which obstruct the teaching of literature, including the teacher-experienced importance of pupils ‘stepping into’ stories, as opposed to a great many pupils’ reluctance both towards the text and the act of reading. Moreover, the tension between engaged reading and the heavy emphasis placed on assessable outcomes of teaching and learning was addressed by the teachers. The main study revealed that reluctance is an inherent part of reading fictional texts. Further, that the pedagogical application of concepts used in literary studies can support the reading process, make it move forward, encourage the adoption of meta-perspectives on reading and on the pupils themselves as readers, as well as supporting a cohesive view of the finalized text. In summary, the findings suggest that applying literary concepts in literary studies supports pupils towards advancing their transformative learning and potentially points to a new way of making the goals section of the policy documents tangible for teaching and learning practices. According to this study, transformative learning-goals can be achieved if critical perspectives are preceded by individual engagement with the reading of the text. The suggested concept of transformative potential is beneficial to an analysis of the pedagogical function of a certain fictional text used in a certain learning situation geared towards transformative learning. This finding stands in contrast to trends of using reading as a means of writing practice or imaging historical epochs.

This dissertation examines mother-daughter relationships in six novels written by German speaking women authors in the decade after the "Year of the Woman." Three novels depict positive mother-daughter relations: Ausflug mit der Mutter (1976), by Gabriele Wohmann, Gestern war Heute (1979), by Ingeborg Drewitz, Die dreizehnte Fee (1983), by Katja Behrens. Three others portray a negative mother-daughter relationship: Die Eisheiligen (1979), by Helga Novak, Die Zuchtigung (1985), by Waltraud Anna Mitgutsch, and Die Klavierspielerin (1983), by Elfriede Jelinek. Common to all novels is a strong autobiographical tendency and the central importance of the mother in the development of the daughter's self-identity.
The complexity and problems of mother-daughter relationships are analyzed as an outcome of female socialization within a patriarchal society. Chapter I deals with historical, economic and psychological oppression of women. The resulting internalization of the role of inferiority and dependency leads to the subsequent repression of their own daughters. Chapter II discusses new contributions in the fields of psychology and sociology to the understanding of female identity formation through relationships. Chapter III provides a two-pronged analysis of each novel by describing the individual mother-daughter relationship in comparison with the outcomes of Chapters I and II, and by addressing the narrator's process of putting the experience into a unique literary form and thus contributing to women's literature.
Themes that are unique in each novel are: the emotional stress of the adult daughter trying to redefine her relationship with her widowed mother (Ausflug mit der Mutter), the dichotomy of woman in her nurturing role as mother and in her quest for self-realization (Gestern war Heute), the difficulty of breaking the repetitive cycle of the female role of dependency (Die dreizehnte Fee). All of the following novels assess the damaged self-identity of the daughter caused by a destructive mother. While the daughters survive due to fierce resistance (Die Eisheiligen) or escape into the world of art (Die Zuchtigung) there is no hope for the daughter in Die Klavierspielerin due to her identification with the oppressor.

Denna studie undersöker hur Dagens Nyheter och Svenska Dagbladet konstruerat bilden av romer inom ramen för tidningarnas nyhetsrapportering. Studien har en kvantitativ del och en kvalitativ del. Den kvantitativa delen har ämnat att undersöka i vilka mediala sammanhang som romer förekommer i nyhetsrapporteringen och om förekomsten av dessa sammanhang kan anses ha förändrats efter det att Rumänien och Bulgarien blev medlemsländer i EU. Den kvalitativa delen har syftat till att undersöka hur bilden av romer konstruerats inom några av de mediala sammanhang som identifierats och i vilken mån och på vilket sätt nyhetsrapporteringen kan anses ha präglats av stereotypisering av romer.  Det teoretiska ramverket är byggt på ansatser från den kritiska diskursteorin samt på begrepp som stereotypisering, andrafiering och diskursiv diskriminering. Resultatet av den kvantitativa undersökningen visar att romer förekommer i sex olika mediala sammanhang, där det absolut vanligaste sammanhanget visade sig vara det om romers utsatthet. Resultatet från den kvantitativa undersökningen visar också att rapporteringen om romer ökat i fyra av de sex identifierade sammanhangen efter det att Rumänien och Bulgarien blev medlemsländer i EU. EU-inträdet bedöms emellertid ha haft en viss påverkan på nyhetsrapporteringen, det så kallade ”romregistret” visade sig också vara en bidragande faktor till att rapporteringen om romer ökat på senare år. Resultatet av den kvalitativa undersökningen visar att romer tenderar att konstrueras som de problematiska Andra och att nyhetsrapporteringen i viss mån kan anses vara präglad av stereotypisering av romer. Att romer sällan förekommer i en positivt präglad nyhetsrapportering bedöms, enligt det kritiska angreppssättet, försvåra möjligheten att åstadkomma social förändring.

In dieser Arbeit wird die Interaktion der Protagonisten in den Romanen von Horacio Castellanos Moya untersucht. Betrachtet werden die Bücher: La diabla en el espejo (2000), El arma en el hombre (2001), Donde no estén ustedes (2003), Insensatez (2004) und Desmoronamiento (2006). In der Reihenfolge abnehmender sozialer Distanz geht es nacheinander um Konzepte von professionellen Beziehungen, Freundschaft, familiären Beziehungen und Intimität. Geprüft wird hierbei die These, dass all diese Beziehungen als von Gewaltverhältnissen unterwandert dargestellt werden. Zum anderen soll eine detaillierte Analyse Aufschluss über Inszenierungsweisen, Implikationen und Folgen der dargestellten Gewalt ermöglichen. Als zentral erweisen sich hierbei einerseits der Begriff des „Epitaphs“, wie ihn Jacques Derrida in seiner Politiques de l’ amitié entwickelt und andererseits die „Theorie des kommunikativen Rabens“, welche Ottmar Ette in seinem Band ÜberLebenswissen: die Aufgabe der Philologie darstellt. Die Arbeit hofft außerdem dazu beizutragen, den Bekanntheitsgrad Castellanos Moyas, als einem herausragenden Vertreter zentralamerikanischer Belletristik, zu erhöhen.
The objective of the present master thesis is to investigate the images of social interaction in the novels of Horacio Castellanos Moya. The books taken into consideration are La diabla en el espejo (2000), El arma en el hombre (2001), Donde no estén ustedes (2003), Insensatez (2004) and Desmoronamiento (2006). In a succesion of lessening social distance, concepts of professional relations, friendship, family relations and intimacy are examinated. This will be done in order to, first, review the assumption that all these concepts are shown as being infiltrated by violent conditions. Second, a more detailed analysis aims at a deeper understanding of the ways of design, as well as the implications and results of the represented violence. Concepts wich proved to be important in this context are Jacques Derrida’s “Epitaph” wich he develops in his Politiques de l’ amitié and Ottmar Ette’s “Theory of the Communicative Raven” from his book ÜberLebenswissen: die Aufgabe der Philologie. Apart from this the paper is meant to make the novels of this extraordinary exponent of Central American fiction known to a greater public.

This work analyzes the role of roman provincial fleets, mainly through the use of military diplomas. All the evidence has been collected, ordered and commented with special attention to the role of diplomas as official documents for the study of the naval provincial garrisons in the Ist and IInd centuries A.D.. Problems deriving from diplomas as still imperfect proofs for a full reconstruction of the history of roman fleets have been registered. Epigraphic evidence has been also taken into account to describe the history of the fleets.

Darbe aptariamas Vakarų (lietuvių kultūra) ir Rytų kultūrų santykis ir jungiamoji jų grandis – mitas, pateikiama mitinė Donaldo Kajoko romano „Ežeras ir kiti jį lydintys asmenys“ analizė. Analizuojamą romano pasaulį skirstome į tris personažo gyvenimo sferas: gyvenimą su gamta, gyvenimą su žmonėmis, gyvenimą su dvasinėmis esybėmis. Pastebėta, kad pagrindinis romane vaizduojamas objektas yra ežeras. Jis simbolizuoja pirminį chaosą. Ežero centre – dieviško grožio ir didžiulės energijos sala, ji taip pat yra visos romano erdvės centras. Ežero pakraščiai įkūnija mitinio pasaulio dalis: vienoje pusėje pelkė – anapusinis pasaulis, kitoje dvaras – žmogaus gyvenamasis pasaulis. Kuo toliau į pakraščius nuo salos, tuo aplinka klaidesnė. Dvaro gyventojai nesikeičia nei išvaizda, nei charakteriu, pagrindinio veikėjo Gabrieliaus Aušauto pasikeitimai priklauso nuo jo gyvenimo dvare laiko. Dvaro šeimininkę Augustę, pasaulio tvarkos prižiūrėtoją, nužudo jos virėja Juta, nes pastaroji nori sustabdyti kosmoso kūrimąsi ir grąžinti pasaulį į chaosą. Pelkėje gausu fantastinių veikėjų nesybių, arba anattų. Budizmo filosofijoje anattos sąvoka reiškia besieliškumą, vientisos ir patvarios esybės nebuvimą. Anattos savo pažiūromis į pasaulį teigia skirtingų teologinių ir filosofinių minčių susimaišymą, mirties visagališkumą. Ilgainiui pagrindinis veikėjas virsta anatta. Pagrindinės romano temos – amžinybė, chaoso ir kosmoso kova, pasaulio pirmapradiškumas, kurį žmogus išvysta tik miręs.
This paper deals with intercultural dialogue between Western culture (Lithuanian) and Eastern culture. We suggest to think of myth as a connection between those two cultures in Donaldas Kajokas’s Novel "Ežeras ir kiti jį lydintys asmenys". The main object of this novel is a lake. It symbolizes the primordial chaos. In the middle of the lake there is an island of divine beauty and enormous energy. In this novel the center of the space is an island. The edges of the lake embody the sections of the mythical world. On one side there is a swamp – the ulterior world. On the other side there is a manor house – the man‘s living place. Manor residents do not change their appearance neither their character. The main character Gabrielius Ašautas changes depends on the time he spends in the manor house. The manor house hostess Augusta is the warden of the world order. She was killed by her kitchener Juta because the last-mentioned wants to stop the creation of the cosmos and to recreate the chaos. There are a lot of unreal creatures in the swamp, so-called anatta. In Buddhism, the term anatta refers to the notion of soulless. Eventually the main character turns into anatta. The main themes in this novel are: an eternity, struggle between chaos and cosmos, and the primordiality of the world.

Interdependence is assumed to work through spatial externalities caused by disembodied knowledge diffusion. The transition from theory to econometrics leads to a reduced-form empirical spatial Durbin model specification that explains the variation in regional levels of per worker output at steady state. A system of 198 regions across 22 European countries over the period from 1995 to 2004 is used to empirically test the model. Testing is performed by assessing the importance of cross-region technological interdependence, and measuring direct and indirect (spillover) effects of the MRW determinants on regional output. Syftet med uppsatsen är att utifrån en jämförelse av fem verk av fyra författare - Karl Ove Knausgård, Lars Norén, Maja Lundgren och Carina Rydberg se huruvida mottagandet skiljer sig åt ur genussynpunkt mellan dessa författares verk som är av liknande karaktär. Detta utförs med hjälp av Yvonne Hirdmans genusteorier och delvis av Ebba Witt-Brattströms teorier om könsanalog läsning. Intresset för detta uppkom utav att Maja Lundgren i synnerhet fick utstå mycket kritik beträffande sin roman "Myggor och tigrar" samtidigt som Lars Norén mestadels hyllades som en stor författare, trots verkens likhet beträffande den utlämnande aspekten.

Resumen

This thesis concerns the feminist consciousness-raising novel of the 1970s. The aim of the thesis is to examine narrative strategies which, according to the consciousness-raising practice, are adapted to enlighten the political aspects of the personal. The focus is both on strategies that address the protagonist and on those that address the reader. I also examine in which way the use of these strategies is dependent upon ideas of class and gender.

I find that the narrative situation, in this case the relationship between the protagonist and the narrator, is central to the use of the consciousness-raising narrative strategies. In Anna-Lisa Bäckmans Fia i folkhemmet och Fia med manifestet, the protagonist Fia is positioned as an oppressed working-class woman, which results in a narrative situation that gives the protagonist a limited space of action and that gives the narrator the power to interpret the experiences of the protagonist. In Margareta Sarris Ta dej en slav och Mor ror åran är trasig, the relationship between the protagonist and the narrator is more equal, due to its dialogic form that enables the protagonist Lisa to talk back to the narrator. The consciousness-raising narrative follows a heteronormative development that is characteristic of all novels examined.

The analysis demonstrates that the narrative situation is important to the plot. Lisa is able to change the course of her life according to the novel’s feminist analysis, which Fia to a lesser degree, is not. The analysis also demonstrates that the narrative position is constructed according to gender as well as to class.

Resumen

This essay is a qualitative descriptive translation study concerning two translations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into Swedish. The purpose of the study is to investigate the translational behaviour of the translators and the translation norms that govern this behaviour.

By thoroughly analysing stretches of the play, the study will attempt to locate translation shifts (linguistic changes) that occur in the translation from the source text to the target text. These changes are connected with the translators’ fidelity towards e.g. the metre of the verse or the sense transfer of puns. The analysis also comprises a survey of the translation norms that the translators adhere to. These norms, stated by the translators themselves, are connected to their translation approach. Thus, the study will reveal the differences of translation behaviour and analyse them from a wider perspective. The translations were made around 1840 and in 1982, respectively. The considerable space in time in itself suggests that linguistic differences will occur. However, the study will also find differences as regards the purposes of the translations. The older translation appears to be performed in a tradition of fidelity to the written text and its literary qualities, whereas the modern translation clearly has the purpose of being used for the stage performance. The latter is stated by the translator himself, who also argues that Shakespeare is to be considered drama and not literature.

This thesis: Origins and Destinations: Representation in the theatre of Romeo Castellucci, investigates the working methodology of the Italian theatre director, Romeo Castellucci and his company, Societas Raffaello Sanzio. It provides an account of Societas Raffaello Sanzio???s history, working methods, a detailed reading of the thematic and philosophical landscape in their works especially Genesi: from the museum of sleep, and the cycle: Tragedia Endogonidia, and a discussion on the company???s artistic process towards the formation of its compositions and performances. This research and investigation is based on numerous viewings of most of the company???s theatre works created in the last six years, interviews with Romeo Castellucci as well as other participating artists, two privileged periods of observation (residencies) in Italy of the rehearsal and creation processes of three shows, and the analysis and discussion of some of the key critical and intellectual responses to the work of Romeo Castellucci. The thematic focus of the thesis is the notion of Origins and Destinations, and its relationship with the language of representation in Romeo Castellucci???s theatre. The theoretical discussion in the thesis is organised around Giorgio Agamben???s notion of Potentiality within the composition and content of Castellucci???s theatre. This concept provides a link between the key ideas of Origins, Destinations and Representation. Castellucci???s application of Agamben???s Potentiality deconstructs dramatic structure, narrative and action down to the fundamentals of the act itself, separated from its meaningful context. It is the conclusion of this thesis, that in the instant of this singular act, Romeo Castellucci manages to represent a point where origin and destination meet, or a point where they both are, for an instant, one and the same thing.

This thesis explores fictional representations of women’s reading practices in the early novels of Fredrika Bremer. I examine these in relation to the negotiations of reading habits in Sweden and Europe during the 1830’s, particularly pertaining to questions of gender, intimacy, desire, and corporeality. The material consists of three novels (The Family H***, The Neighbours and Home), in which the motif of women’s reading plays a significant part. In the four chapters of the thesis, I analyse key aspects of gender and reading in Bremer’s novels: 1) the popular stereotype of obsessive novel reading, and how this specific practice is portrayed in relation to the duties of a wife and mother, as well as to intimacy and secrecy; 2) representations of corrupted or illicit readers, whose reading practices disturbs the confines of nineteenth-century femininity; and 3) how these characters may challenge or bypass the restrictions of gender roles through fictional engagement. The thesis argues that Bremer’s representations of women’s reading are more complex and varied than has previously been recognized, and it reveals new aspects of these representations, such as the significance of intimacy with oneself and others in Bremer’s depictions of silent reading practices, and the transgressive power of feminine empathy.

This thesis examines the rhetorical significance of visual metaphors as they occur in film. In particular, it provides a rhetorical analysis of Baz Luhrmann's film William Shakespeare's: Romeo + Juliet . The thesis analyzes how religious visual metaphors construct meaning by creating visual narratives that are just as powerful as spoken or written metaphors. The thesis relies on Gozzi's (1999) three levels of metaphors—surface, deep, and meta-metaphors—for the analysis of visual metaphors surrounding Father Lawrence and images of Christ that appear in Luhrmann's film. The analysis indicates that the visual surface metaphors of Father Lawrence depict a central character that is seedy, weak, and inactive. The visual surface metaphors of the images of Christ depict this religious figure as omnipresent yet impotent. The analysis indicates that the visual deep metaphors of Father Lawrence define this character as infirmed and culpable for the tragedy of the film. The visual deep metaphors of the images of Christ define him as infirmed and confined. Taken together, the surface and deep visual metaphors contribute to the development of a meta-metaphor in Luhrmann's film that depicts the Catholic religion as dark. Ultimately, the visual surface, deep, and meta-metaphors contained in Luhrmann's film contribute to the construction of meaning. They provide reasons for the character's inadequacies, establish narratives that are not part of the literal narrative as presented in Luhrmann's film and Shakespeare's original work, and provide a postmodern religious audience with substantial visual narrative with which they can identify.

Do Log (Två folk) är författaren Gulzars[1] första och hittills enda roman. Boken berättar om vad som hände en grupp människor i samband med delningen av Indien 1947.  Under mitt sökande efter bakgrundsfakta har jag blivit fascinerad av Gulzar som nutida kulturperson-lighet med imponerande bredd.  Syftet med min PM är att göra en analys av romanen Do Log i ljuset av författarens liv. Jag vill undersöka vilka drag i hans liv och verksamhet som avspeglar sig i romanen, varför en grundlig presentation av hans liv ges. I korthet kommer jag att beröra inflytande från Tagore och Premchand på Gulzars konstnärliga verksamhet.  Andra frågor jag vill studera är hur Gulzars yrke som filmregissör märks i romanen samt dess språkliga kvaliteter i relation till Gulzars diktning. En analys av ett avsnitt av hindiversionen av texten görs med syftet att spåra språkliga influenser från arabiska/ persiska och/eller sanskrit. Jag vill även lyfta fram några verk om delningens trauma i den indiska litteraturen och kort nämna vilken roll Do Log har spelat i detta sammanhang.     Som bakgrundsmaterial har jag i första hand använt dottern Meghna Gulzars biografi över sin far, vars innehåll han själv godkänt, samt vetenskapliga artiklar om Gulzars filmer och poesi.  [1] I denna PM har jag använt diakritiska tecken för indiska namn och hindiord med undantag för namnet Gulzar som skrivs utan långt a.

Translation is not simply a transmission from one language to another language, but the bridge connecting languages, cultures, and people around the world throughout history, from past to present, in time and space. In the mutual relationship with literary systems, translation in some cases is the pioneer orienting domestic literature from stylistics, genres to content. Translation in Viet Nam, however, has never been studied systematically, and at present is like a chaotic market in which the rhythm of three main factors, translation, proof-reading, and criticism are marching to different tunes. The thesis focuses on evaluating the functions and contributions of translation in the development of literature and society in Vietnam. Besides, the thesis uses Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as a case study to clarify problems in translation in Vietnam. The results synthesized from the formulation of research questions have revealed that translation in Vietnam is absolutely a great transformer of culture and a fertilizer of Vietnamese literature. The case study Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has pointed out that present problems of translation in Vietnam are the shortage of criticism which consequently produces many poor quality translations called ‘disasters’, and of classic books for high education and research. Within deep analysis into the sematic features of the Vietnamese translation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in comparison to its Shakespeare’s English, the thesis has concluded that this translation, which has been used popularly in schools over fifty years, is no longer suitable for present audiences. It is, therefore, encouraged to re-translate the text. The thesis besides providing a whole picture of translation in Vietnam and insights into the practice of translating Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into Vietnamese, is a valuable source for Vietnamese translation scholars to indicate strategies for the development of translation in Vietnam, and for Vietnamese translators to re-translate not only other plays of Shakespeare but also classical works of the world.

East Tennessee State University developed a workflow to add journal publications to their institutional repository and faculty profiles using three tools: Zotero for entering metadata, SHERPA/RoMEO for checking copyright permissions, and Unpaywall for locating full-text documents. This study evaluates availability and accuracy of the information and documents provided by Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall for journal publications in four disciplines. The tools were less successful with works authored by arts and humanities and education faculty in comparison to works authored by medicine and health sciences and social and behavioral sciences faculty. The findings suggest that publisher practices contributed to the disciplinary differences.

Subjects discussed include historical fashion of the early Italian Renaissance, the challenges of working with costume rental companies, and the collaborative nature of costume construction. This essay describes an action research project conducted twice in the same high school with second year students within the subject English. Students are often unwilling or unable to relate to Shakespeare and his language. It is boring, they say. It is difficult, inaccessible and has nothing to do with us, they say. But how is falling in love unrelatable and boring? How are gangs and families far away from today's society? Romeo and Juliet is relatable and as current today as it was 400 years ago.  The subject English in the Swedish curriculum requires different literary time periods and dramatic text as well as living conditions, attitudes, values, traditions, social issues as well as history, politics and culture from the world where English is used should be integrated into the teaching. Which means that Shakespeare is perfect.  Teaching English using drama is a challenge with students who do not see themselves as ‘actors’, the didactic challenges themselves being of interest in this essay. Students are asked to create a modern devised version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet where they work on character using for example Stanislavsky’s methods and improvisation. The aim is to see which didactic changes need to be made for character work and performance to be effective, run smoothly and be fun. The aim is also to better understand how it feels for the students to take on a character. The results show the importance of relevance for the students, leading them slowly into using drama as a method. The play has to be relatable and have a connection to the students own lives. In conclusion, in-depth character work linked to improvisation and devising is important for the development of character.

Inledningen av uppsatsen diskuterar huruvida Shakespeare går at betrakta som en feminist med hjälp av ny-historicism. Därför kommer avsikten med uppsatsen vara att undersöka huruvida gestaltningen av Julia i Romeo och Julia förändrats igenom historien i olika filmadaptioner beroende på vilken form av feminism som var störst när verken skapades.Därför kommer Romeo and Juliet (1968), Romeo + Juliet (1996) samt Romeo & Juliet (2013)analyseras för att kunna göra nedslag i olika tidpunkter i historien. Målet med analysen är därför att finna ett svar på huruvida adaptionerna har förändrats samt vilka förändringar somgjort för att passa in i samtiden. Analysen landar i att adaptionerna i olika utsträckning blivit påverkade av feminismen som existerade när dessa skapades. Dock går det inte att dra en slutsats huruvida det är aktiva val ifrån skaparna för att passa in i samtiden eller om det undermedvetet uppstått.

This paper presents a theoretical growth model that accounts for technological interdependence among regions in a Mankiw-Romer-Weil world. The reasoning behind the theoretical work is that technological ideas cannot be fully appropriated by investors and these ideas may diffuse and increase the productivity of other firms. We link the diffusion of ideas to spatial proximity and allow for ideas to flow to nearby regional economies. Through the magic of solving for the reduced form of the theoretical model and the magic of spatial autoregressive processes, the simple dependence on a small number of neighbouring regions leads to a reduced form theoretical model and an associated empirical model where changes in a single region can potentially impact all other regions. This implies that conventional regression interpretations of the parameter estimates would be wrong. The proper way to interpret the model has to rely on matrices of partial derivatives of the dependent variable with respect to changes in the Mankiw-Romer-Weil variables, using scalar summary measures for reporting the estimates of the marginal impacts from the model. The summary impact measure estimates indicate that technological interdependence among European regions works through physical rather than human capital externalities. (author's abstract)
