Resumen
Women and sexual minorities in the United States continue to experience subordinate status, and the policy gains they have made in areas such as reproductive rights and marriage equality continue to be challenged in political discourse. We conducted a critical discourse analysis of texts from the 2012 Democratic and Republican national conventions in order to examine the extent to which ideological representations of the family were employed to legitimize public policy positions related to gender (e.g., abortion) and sexuality (e.g., same-sex marriage). We analyzed two forms of text (official party platform document, transcripts of speeches) with distinct intended audiences (i.e., party members, general audience). Findings revealed that an ideological representation of the traditional family ideal—featuring a heterosexual couple, their children, and asymmetric gender relations—was present within speeches given by both parties, particularly by the spouses of the presidential candidates (Michelle Obama and Ann Romney). Although this ideological representation was subsequently used within the Republican Party platform to legitimize positions against same-sex marriage and abortion, the Democratic Party platform challenged this representation of the family to instead advocate for policy positions in favor of same-sex marriage and women’s reproductive rights. We discuss this ambivalence within Democratic texts in light of the different audiences that party convention texts seek. Implications for gender- and sexuality-based policies are discussed, as well as the importance of examining political discourse across diverse forms and settings.

Resumen
ABSTRACTAn experiment was conducted during 2 years to evaluate industry Coopworth, industry Romney and Waihora Romney ewes (a strain selected for 10 years for increased ewe productivity) in a variety of nutritional and management treatment combinations. Waihora Romneys were most productive with small and inconsistent differences between industry Romneys and Coopworths. Conventional cross-classified analyses of variance did not reveal large, consistent nor economically important ewe genotype × nutritional treatment or year interactions. Additional analyses were designed to investigate whether the ewe genotypes responded to changes in the nutritional and(or) management environment with similar quantitative changes in production. A sensitive genotype would be one that responded to environmental changes with relatively large changes in productivity; a stable genotype would be one whose changes in production in response to a variable environment were smaller. By several statistical procedures designed to assess relative ‘sensitivity’ v. ‘stability’, Waihora Romney ewes appeared to be the most stable, with industry Romney and Coopworth ewes similar in their sensitivity.

Resumen
In July 1806 William Hayley suggested that Mary Tighe publish an illustrated edition of Psyche; or, The Legend of Love, using engravings of George Romney's Cupid and Psyche cartoons. Tighe declined, as she did all recommendations that she publish an edition of Psyche. Although she usually cited modesty as her rationale for not publishing, in this instance she pointed to the unsuitability of Romney's illustrations for her narrative. The Romney cartoons closely adhered to Apuleius's narrative of the Cupid and Psyche legend, and were sketched in 1777 to illustrate Hayley's subsequently unfinished verse translation of Apuleius's tale. This essay argues that Hayley tried to use Tighe's Psyche to complete the unfinished project he wanted to pursue with Romney in the first days of their friendship, which would help him overcome the emotional paralysis he experienced in 1805–1806 as he struggled to move forward on his Life of Romney.

Resumen
In today’s data-driven campaigns, presidential targeting strategies rely on detailed perceptions about the political leanings and policy positions of Americans to decide which registered voters to contact and which messages to emphasize in their outreach. However, identifying supporters and opponents of a candidate’s policy positions is far from foolproof. This reality results in some citizens encountering political message(s) on congruent issues, where their issue stance aligns with the messaging candidate, and others encountering incongruent issue message(s), where the candidate and message recipient do not share the same position. Examining official contact records from the 2012 presidential campaign of Republican Mitt Romney, I find evidence that Romney’s campaign had some success when targeting Democrats with congruent issues. Messaging Democrats with an issue where they and Romney share common ground is associated with decreased support for Obama, increased abstention, and increased support for Romney. Contacting Democrats with an incongruent message and contacting Republicans with either an incongruent or congruent issue message had minimal effects on the voting behavior of the recipient.

Resumen
AbstractA persistent challenge for minority candidates is mitigating negative effects attributed to their unpopular group identity. This was precisely the case for Mitt Romney, a Mormon, as he sought and captured the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. We draw on existing public opinion data about the tepid reaction to Romney's Mormonism from within Republican ranks. Then, we review our own experimental data to examine a potential mitigation strategy, “God Talk,” and its emotional costs to the GOP. We find that Romney and similar candidates may avoid direct penalty by party rank-and-file for their minority attributes when using God Talk, but the associated affective response supporters direct at their party may carry yet-unknown putative costs for both party and candidate.

Resumen
Seasonal wool growth and associated wool characteristics were measured in a Romney line selected for high fleece weight and an unselected control line in 1990 and 1991. Both had a significant (P<0.01) decline in wool growth rate in winter compared with summer. The wool growth rate advantage (P<0.001) of the selected line over the control averaged 19 and 33% for ewes, and 24 and 36% for hoggets, in summer and winter, respectively. Staple strength, yield, and fibre diameter differences were closely associated with wool growth. Colour analysis showed no difference between lines in either brightness (Y) or yellowness (Y - Z). However, both the Y and Z values were lower in spring and summer, while Y - Z was highest in summer. The results suggest that selection for high fleece weight also improves major wool characteristics and reduces the relative winter wool growth decline in Romneys.

Resumen
Wool production and reproductive performance components of similar genotypes, brought from distinct production areas, were evaluated during five years trial at similar environments, such as, joining season and stocking rate on winter improved pasture. The least squares means revealed that the origin (breed) effect concentrated upon the Corriedale ewes wool production, whereas in Romney females it affected the reproductive performance. In the abscence of interaction between origin (breed) and year for most variables, it was assumed that the farm management procedures and/or selection criteria applied on hoggets were determinant of the subsequent lifetime production within each genotype examined. Expecting a better reproductive performance in Romneys, mainly rate of lambs born, weaned and lambs weaning weight, comments were made on the selection criteria employed on this breed over many years. The work has demonstrated that "property of origin (breed)" of sheep composing any experiment aiming at breed comparisons, should be considered as a potential factor capable of biasing information on productive aspects.

Resumen
In January of 2012, the Primary Model predicted that Barack Obama would defeat Mitt Romney by a comfortable margin. He did. Obama's popular vote total topped Romney's by more than four million votes. The Primary Model's forecast was by far the earliest of those assembled in the special 2012PSsymposium (45 (4): 614–617). Even so it predicted an Obama victory with greater certainty (almost 90%) than any other one. To put this performance in perspective, note that several models got it wrong in 2012, and hardly any of the other ones picking Obama to win did so with much certainty. Many preelection polls also failed to predict an Obama victory with their final estimate, including the venerable Gallup Poll. How did the Primary Model get it right so far in advance of Election Day 2012?

Resumen
A strategy to increase wool income for coarse wool (fibre diameter > 30 µm) producers through a transition to higher value medium wool (fibre diameter between 25 and 29 µm) was identified, with previous analyses allowing sheep feed demand increases to impractical levels during the transition period. This study modelled a whole flock transition from Romney breed to a ¾Merino¼Romney flock through crossbreeding with Merino sires, with sheep feed demand constrained between 55% and 65% of total grown feed. Transition was complete after 12 years, and the final ¾M¼R flock had higher COS (cash operating surplus; NZD 516/ha) than the base Romney flock (NZD 390/ha). Net present value analyses showed the transition always had an economic benefit (up to 13% higher) over the Romney flock. In a sensitivity analysis with sheep and wool sale prices changed by ±10%, higher sheep sale prices reduced the economic benefit of the transition (NPV up to 11% higher) over the Romney flock, as sheep sales comprised a higher proportion of income for the Romney flock, and higher wool sale prices increased the benefit (NPV up to 15% higher) of the transition to ¾M¼R over the Romney flock. This study demonstrated a whole flock transition from Romney to ¾M¼R breed was profitable and achievable without large variation in sheep feed demand, although the scale of benefit compared to maintaining a Romney flock was determined by changes in sheep and wool sale prices.

Resumen
What seemed unimaginable a decade ago, namely, the abolition of the death penalty in the United States, today seems well within the horizon of possibility. Indeed, supporters of capital punishment now seem to be very much on the defensive. To take but one example, in April 2005, then Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney filed a long-awaited bill to reinstate the death penalty in his state. The bill, which Romney called “a model for the nation” and the “gold standard” for capital punishment legislation, was remarkable for its hesitations and qualifications. Thus, it limited death eligibility to a narrow set of crimes, including deadly acts of terrorism, killing sprees, murders involving torture, and the killing of law enforcement authorities. It excluded entire categories of crimes that many believe also warrant the death penalty, including the murders of children and the rape-murders of women. It also laid out a set of hurdles for meting out capital punishment sentences, in an effort to neutralize the kind of problems that have led to dozens of death row exonerations across the nation in recent years. The measure called for verifiable scientific evidence, such as DNA, to be required before a defendant can be sentenced to death, and a tougher standard of “no doubt” of guilt (rather than the typical “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt” standard) for juries to sentence defendants to death. The limited nature of Romney's bill, which nonetheless ultimately was defeated in the Massachusetts legislature, provides one vivid sign that the tide has turned in the national conversation about capital punishment.

The genetic variability of 22 protein loci was investigated in two sheep flocks: 22 females Romney Marsh and 124 animals derived from crossbreeding between Romney Marsh and Merino Booroola, reared by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária -EMBRAPA, Bagé, RS, Brazil). Eight loci were polymorphic; the others showed no variation. The usefulness of the eight plymorphic systems (Cat, DIA I, EP-1, EsA, HbB, ME, Tf, and X Prot.) in parentage tests was analyzed. The probability to find two random identical animals in each breed was estimated as 1:1000. The efficiency of these proteins for exclusion of one of two possible sires in parentage tests was about 77% both for Romney Marsh and Romney/ Booroola flocks. Although parentage tests in sheep have not been enforced in Brazil up to now, the establishment of this technique is important for the prevention of non-paternity on the excellent rams.

Resumen
The 2012 contest between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney included fierce dialogue about women and issues typically connected to them. The inflammatory comments that conservative radio-show host Rush Limbaugh made about female law student Sandra Fluke and the Affordable Health Care Act's (ACA) requirements that all workplaces cover contraceptives were central topics in the news. The controversy literally followed Romney in the form of “Pillamina,” a human-sized costume designed to look like a pack of birth control pills that shadowed the candidate's summer swing state tour. While “Pillamina” was the work of Planned Parenthood's Action Fund, the Obama campaign also took aim at Romney on this issue, running a television commercial featuring “Dawn and Alex,” two women talking about how out of touch Romney is with women's health issues. The Romney campaign's attempts to counter these attacks and shift the focus of conversation were largely thwarted, as questionable comments from Republican Senate candidates Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock brought the issue of abortion to the forefront. Both of these statements added fuel to the narrative that Republicans are out of touch with women's needs. And Romney himself contributed to the problem, as his notorious “binders full of women” debate response broadened the scope of the issue from reproductive rights to more general issues about gender equality. Altogether, these Republican comments and positions opened the door for Democrats on the campaign trail to attack the party, and a popular conclusion is that this “War on Women” narrative hurt the Republican Party and played an integral part in Obama's victory.

Resumen
To be elected President of the United States, a candidate must create a story that both resonates with and persuades the electorate. Gardner suggested that “leaders achieve their effectiveness chiefly through the stories they relate” and that there are three types of leadership stories: Ordinary, Innovative and Visionary. The differences between the 2012 and 2016 U.S. Presidential elections are extreme. As the 2016 election was one of unusual and unexpected moments as compared with the more tame and typical election in 2012, this study compared the stories of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump with those of the 2012 election between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. Results from the 2012 election found that Romney’s story fit into the category of Ordinary leader, while Obama’s story was one attributed to an Innovative leader. T tests found large and significant differences between candidate preference and story credibility and whether the stories motivated the respondents to vote. However, for the 2016 election, both candidates had innovative stories, and this may explain how one candidate won the popular vote, while the other received the majority of electoral votes.

Resumen
“Relying on Science, Romney Files Death Penalty Bill.” With that headline, a press release on April 28, 2005 announced that Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was seeking to reintroduce by legislation the death penalty that the state's Supreme Judicial Court ruled unconstitutional in 1984. The remainder of the text left little doubt that science was a major basis for the governor's action. The press release quoted Romney as saying that the bill provided a “gold standard for the death penalty in the modern scientific age.” Positing a symmetry that will be questioned below, Romney also declared, “Just as science can free the innocent, it can also identify the guilty.” The bill itself deferred to science by calling for corroborating scientific evidence, multiple layers of review, and a novel “no doubt” standard of proof. By raising the required standard of evidence and by restricting the class of capital crimes, the proposed law hoped to correct the defects of other death penalty statutes.

AbstractThis article explores the role of women investors in the Virginia Company during the early seventeenth century, arguing that women determined the success of English overseas expansion by ‘adventuring’ not just their person, but their purse. Trading companies relied on the capital of women, and yet in seminal work on Virginia Company investors women have received no attention at all. This is a significant oversight, as studying the women who invested in trading companies illuminates broader issues regarding the role of women in the early English empire. This article explores why and how two women from merchant backgrounds, Rebecca Romney (d. 1644) and Katherine Hueriblock (d. 1639), managed diverse, global investment portfolios in the period before the Financial Revolution. Through company records, wills, letters, court depositions, and a surviving church memorial tablet, it reconstructs Romney's and Hueriblock's interconnected interests in ‘New World’ ventures, including in Newfoundland, the North-West Passage Company, Virginia colony, and sugar trade. Studying women investors reveals how trade and colonization shaped economic activity and investment practices in the domestic sphere and also elucidates how women, in their role as investors, helped give birth to an English empire.

Resumen
ABSTRACTA study was made of the levels of oestrous activity of two indigenous breeds of sheep (Somali and Nandi) and three exotic breeds of sheep (Merino, Karakul and New Zealand Romney Marsh) over a period of 3 years, in an equatorial environment. Breed was the only significant source of variation for the length of the oestrous cycle (P < 0·01). The mean lengths of the oestrous cycle were 17·2 (s.d. 3·21), 17·5 (s.d. 2·24), 17·9 (s.d. 2·99), 17·5 (s.d. 2·57) and 16·5 (s.d. 3·41) days for the Somali, Nandi, Merino, Karakul and Romney Marsh breeds, respectively. The mean percentage of ewes of the different breeds showing oestrus in 20-day periods were 69·8 (s.d. 22·57), 49·9 (s.d. 18·67), 63·4 (s.d. 25·70), 79·2 (s.d. 20·30) and 33·2 (s.d. 23·50) % for the Somali, Nandi, Merino, Karakul and Romney Marsh breeds, respectively. Time-series analysis did not detect any evidence of seasonal variation in oestrous activity, although there was an indication that the Merino and Romney Marsh breeds showed a marked increase in oestrous activity following, the introduction of rams. It was concluded that the variation in level of oestrous activity was short term and random.

Resumen
Concentrations of FSH were measured in new-born lambs in Booroola Merino x Romney and Booroola Merino flocks where the Booroola F gene was segregating, and in progeny from sires of a prolific strain of Romney sheep. FSH concentrations increased with age and liveweight in Booroola Merino x Romney ewe lambs to reach peak concentrations at 4-6 weeks of age. Significantly higher mean concentrations were recorded in ewe lambs homozygous for the Booroola gene (FF) compared with non-carrier (+ +) ewe lambs. Concentrations in heterozygous (F+) ewe lambs were intermediate. Maximum differences between the genotypes were recorded at 6 weeks of age. Significantly higher FSH concentrations were also recorded in F-gene-carrier female lambs when compared to non-carriers in two other flocks. FSH concentrations remained low in ram lambs up to 12 weeks of age, and there were no differences between Booroola genotypes. The progeny of one ram from the prolific Romney family had high ovulation rates at 18 months of age. The progeny of other related rams showed no increase in ovulation rates at 18 months of age. Concentrations of FSH in the high-ovulation-rate progeny at 3 and 5 weeks of age did not differ from those in the low-ovulation-rate progeny, but were lower than those in the progeny of an FF Booroola Merino x Romney ram. These results support the hypothesis that neonatal concentrations of FSH are higher in lambs carrying the Booroola F gene, but not in all prolific strains since high FSH concentrations were not recorded in daughters from a prolific Romney flock.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Pregnancy shearing of mature ewes has been shown to influence lamb birthweight and sometimes lamb survival to weaning and wool follicle characteristics. However, the effects of shearing hoggets in mid- or late-pregnancy under New Zealand’s pastoral conditions have not been examined. This study was designed to determine the effects of mid- and late-pregnancy shearing on lambs born to Romney hoggets. Single-bearing hoggets were either shorn at average day 79 of pregnancy (n = 74), at average day 119 (n = 80), or left unshorn (n = 76) while their twin-bearing counterparts were either shorn at average day 79 of pregnancy (n = 18) or left unshorn (n = 12). Mid-pregnancy shearing was found to increase the birthweights of singles (by 0.32 kg, P < 0.05) in comparison with unshorn ewes; however, this relationship was not observed in twins. Neither mid- nor late-pregnancy shearing affected lamb survival to weaning. Singles born to late-pregnancy shorn ewes had whiter wool (P < 0.05) in comparison with lambs born to unshorn dams. Dam treatment had no other effects on follicle or wool characteristics. The results of this study indicate that mid-pregnancy shearing of hoggets can be used as a technique to increase birthweight in single lambs but not twin-born lambs. Pregnancy shearing had no effect on lamb survival rates to weaning, whereas shearing in late-pregnancy had minor effects on wool colour that would be unlikely to affect wool value in Romneys. Shearing in mid-pregnancy had no effect on either progeny follicle or wool characteristics.

Resumen
Background: The subcutaneous implants of melatonin are stimulatory and mimic the positive effects of short photoperiod on reproduction in small ruminants. This study investigated the daily plasma melatonin profiles in ewes treated with melatonin implants and kept under natural photoperiod in Southeastern Brazil. The plasma progesterone concentrations were also investigated before and after melatonin implantation.Materials, Methods & Results: Romney Marsh (n = 11) and Suffolk (n = 10) ewes, which had been isolated from rams for at least 2 months prior to the beginning of the trial, were randomly allocated in two groups based on melatonin implant treatment (with or without melatonin implant). For plasma melatonin concentration, 43 days after melatonin implantation and 3 days before the ram introduction blood samples were collected every 2 hours during 24 hours. For plasma progesterone concentrations, blood samples were collected every once to twice a week for 2 different periods: prior to melatonin implantation and 46 days after the melatonin implantation and at the same day of the introduction of rams. The hormonal concentrations were determined by the radioimmunoassay method (RIA). The data were analyzed according to MIXED procedure (SAS) as repeated measurements for random animal effects. The effect of melatonin treatment on plasma melatonin 24-h period varied according to the breed. At the dark-phase, there were no plasma melatonin differences (P > 0.05) between implanted and no-implanted (228.02 ± 58.39 vs. 169.59 ± 48.39) Romney Marsh ewes whereas for Suffolk ewes the plasma melatonin levels were higher in implanted (305.61 ± 68.39 pg/mL) than no-implanted (151.26 ± 38.35 pg/mL) ones. At the light-phase, melatonin treatment effects could be evidenced and these differences (P < 0.01) consisted of higher melatonin values for implanted ewes and basal values for no-implanted ones in both breed groups. Before the melatonin implantation, the plasma progesterone levels were ˂ 1 ng/mL for Romney Marsh (0.41 ± 0.02 ng/mL) and Suffolk (0.47 ± 0.02 ng/mL) ewes. During the ram introduction period, no melatonin treatment effect was observed on plasma progesterone concentrations in both breed groups, but 2 days after ram introduction the plasma progesterone concentrations increased the mean values > than 1 ng/mL in implanted and no-implanted Suffolk ewes. In implanted Romney Marsh ewes the elevation of progesterone mean values was weak whereas in no-implanted Romney Marsh ewes the progesterone levels were maintained ˂ 1 ng/mL during all the blood sample collection times.Discussion: The melatonin treatment also produced a similar model of daily melatonin levels as reported previously by others, which is characterized by high plasma melatonin concentrations during the light phase of the day. The effect of melatonin implants on plasma melatonin profiles interacted with breed confirming an individual response to melatonin implantation which is proportional to genetic individual variation pattern of melatonin secretion. Before the melatonin implantation all Romney Marsh and Suffolk ewes were judged to be in non-ovulatory period (anoestrus) with plasma progesterone mean values lower than 1 ng/mL. The melatonin treatment helped to induce the ovulatory activity in most of the ewes that were in anestrous at the time of melatonin implantation and the efficacy of this treatment depends on the individual variation in ovulatory response to ram introduction. In Southeastern Brazil., melatonin implant altered the daily plasma melatonin profiles of Suffolk and Romney Marsh ewes by increasing the melatonin levels during the light-phase of the day. Melatonin implant also induced an ovulatory response in Suffolk and Romney Marsh after the introduction of the rams. For no-implanted Suffolk ewes, the male effect is sufficient to provoke an ovulatory response.

Resumen
The increased emphasis placed on lamb production in Brazil points to the need for a better knowledge of the annual pattern of reproductive activity in ewe lambs. This study evaluates the annual estrous activity pattern of hair and wool ewe lambs raised in southeast Brazil. Estrous characteristics were recorded for 12 months in ten Santa Inês and 21 Romney Marsh and Suffolk ewe lambs. Santa Inês ewe lambs exhibited a greater length of the normal estrous cycle (14 to 19 days) than Romney Marsh and Suffolk ewe lambs (17.0 ± 0.1 days vs. 16.5 ± 0.2 and 15.9 ± 0.2 days). All the ewe lambs presented a greater number of periods of estrus per animal per month for single estrous cycles (up to 26 days) during autumn and winter. During spring and summer there was a reduction of this number but this decline varied according to the breed. For Santa Inês ewe lambs the reduction was only significant in the summer. For wool ewe lambs the reduction was significant in both seasons but was more accentuated for Romney Marsh. The Romney Marsh ewe lambs had a more restricted breeding season than Suffolk and both presented optimal estrus activity in autumn and winter. Santa Inês ewe lambs had a continuous distribution of estrous cycles along the year, although presenting a reduction in the number of estrous periods in the summer. The ewe lambs of three breeds presented characteristics of sexual immaturity, like irregular estrous cycles and silent ovulations.
