During the early 1960s, Soviet diplomacy actively promoted the celebration of Taras Shevchenko's anniversaries at an international level. In November 1960, the World Peace Council passed a resolution commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Ukrainian genius' death (in 1961). Later, in December 1962, the 150th anniversary of Shevchenko's birth was included in the list of outstanding events and persons of 1964 by the XII session of the UNESCO General Conference. The 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy proved to be an interesting observatory to evaluate the contrasting ways through which the various components of society looked at the foundation moment of the State. The anniversary was quite different from those of 1911 and 1961 in that the current plight of the country was deeply reflected in meanings and implications. But it also marks the fiftieth anniversary of Fanon’s death: he died, tragically young, on December 6, 1961, not long after the book’s publication. It is no exaggeration to say that Les damnés de la terre was composed by Fanon from his deathbed, and that he was well aware that he was racing death

In 1961, the development of an improved freeze-etching (FE) procedure to prepare rapidly frozen biological cells or tissues for electron microscopy raised two important questions. How does a frozen cell membrane fracture? What do the extensive face views of the cell’s membranes exposed by the fracture process of FE tell us about the overall structure of biological membranes? I discovered that all frozen membranes tend to split along weakly bonded lipid bilayers. Consequently, the fracture process exposes internal membrane faces rather than either of the membrane’s two external surfaces. During

The inaugural IUPAC International Symposium on the Chemistry of Natural Products was also held in 1960, from 15–25 August, in Australia, and was a veritable moving feast from Melbourne to Canberra and Sydney.
