AbstractThe specific ways that cloth—“foreign silks,” “durable Egyptian cottons,” and “artificial silks”—emerged as a potent and visible symbol through which to contest the relations of colonialism and establish national community in Egypt varied with the changing realities of Egypt's political economy. The country's early importation of textiles despite its cultivation of raw cotton, the growth of its state-protected local mechanized industry working long- and medium-staple cotton for a largely lower-class market, and that industry's diversification into artificial silk technologies all helpe

The traditional production mode of the sericulture industry is no longer suitable for the development requirements of modern agriculture; to facilitate the sustainable development of the sericulture industry, factory all-age artificial diet feeding came into being. Understanding the structural characteristics and properties of silk fibers obtained from factory all-age artificial diet feeding is an important prerequisite for application in the fields of textiles, clothing, biomedicine, and others. However, there have been no reports so far. In this paper, by feeding silkworms with factory all-a

The chemical characterization of silk textiles of historic value may be necessary to achieve a better understanding of the production processes applied, to evaluate their preservation, to detect manipulations or forgeries, and to value the combination of tradition and innovation in contemporary manufacturing techniques. The main objective of this work was to study four historical silks from the Garín collection, all of them from the 20th century, although with 19th century designs. To this end, non-invasive spectroscopic and microscopy techniques were applied in order to obtain information on

The fine gold and silver zari thread is an integral part of the silk handloom weaving predominantly practiced in the southern part of the Indian peninsula. The zari thread consists of a silk core, wrapped with flattened silver-copper alloy wire and electroplated with gold. In a brocade silk saree, a minimum of 240 g (1 Marc) of zari is used along with 540 g of dyed silk to produce a silk saree of 6 m in length. The cost of zari is up to 60% of the price of the raw material needed to produce the saree. Earlier, the silver purity of zari thread was assessed using the volumetric analysis techniqu

The Sericulture industry is one of the major cottage industries producing higher income with lower input. The industry requires critical inputs like quality seed, quality feed, skilled labour with optimum environmental conditions for smooth running and higher production. Most of these input processes involve only manual assesment of phenotypic traits and are human-centric. In the current environment, producing high-quality silk is crucial to reaching sustainability by 2030. The identification of the barriers preventing the increase of silkworm production is limited by the traditional technique

Rayon, a shiny artificial fabric with the flashy allure of silk, constitutes no danger to consumers. But worker exposure to carbon disulfide, an essential input in rayon manufacture, can drive workers insane and kill them as well. The dangers of carbon disulfide have been known since the middle of the 19th century. Professor Paul Blanc’s book traces the social amnesia about the dangers of making rayon and how its production has shifted from wealthy countries in Europe, the United States, and Japan to poorer countries like South Korea and the People’s Republic of China. The textile industry is the second largest sector of global trade market and has to shoulder responsibilities towards maintaining the environment. Manufacturing of leather products for the fashion is moving towards alarming situation because of extensive nature of the chemicals used and resources utilized. Several alternatives for leather, the so-called artificial leathers are being made, but production of all these are involved with several synthetic polymers and chemicals that are not eco-friendly. This chapter examines various incidents attesting to the toxic health effects of artificial silk production on workers employed in factories. The British Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Factories and Workshops, published in 1925, was the first to capture carbon disulfide poisoning as a reportable disease. Fifteen cases of carbon disulfide toxicity were identified in that year. In that same year, La Medicina del Lavoro published a very brief notice of a British report on carbon disulfide exposure under the heading “Cause of poisoning in the artificial silk industry.” While the Italians

This chapter examines the use of viscose rayon as a strategic maté by both sides during World War II. Viscose may have been coming into its own in World War II, but the military roots of the viscose rayon industry go much farther back than that. In fact, in the 1920s a recurring critique of the rapidly expanding artificial silk industry was rayon's potential use as a platform for rapid conversion to munitions manufacturing. This concern was driven in large part by the close chemical and manufacturing links between artificial silk made through the nitrocellulose process and the production of ex

It begins with a history of carbon disulfide, which was first synthesized in 1796 by a German mining and metallurgical chemist named Wilhelm August Lampadius. Soon the potent anesthetic effects of carbon disulfide were revealed in various experiments. An outbreak of disease due to carbon disulfide in a prerevolutionary Russian viscose factory was an important early report of worker ill health and only the second one specific to the nascent viscose rayon industry. Abstract Modeling fluid behavior using conventional nodal analysis software is a common practice in the oil and gas industry. However, understanding flow physics helps production engineers to understand the difference between predicted and actual flow behavior. This work presents a methodology applied to a depleting oil and gas field in northern Pakistan. The adopted approach not only helped to overcome vertical lift performance issues in the wellbore, but it also resulted in improved and sustained oil and gas production from the well. Based on these results, wells in the field with vertical l
