The asterism is most likely the rectangle bounded by ρ Leonis, β Sextantis, ο Leonis, and ι Hydrae, with some scattered interior stars interpreted as a face.

AbstractIn 1677-8 Robert Boyle fell victim to a French confidence trickster, Georges Pierre des Clozets, who claimed to belong to a secret society of alchemists, 'the Asterism'; the leader of the Asterism was described as the 'Patriarch of Antioch', resident in Constantinople. New evidence shows that Georges Pierre had contrived to publish two short articles about this 'Patriarch' in a Dutch newspaper, and that one of these was given to Boyle to corroborate Pierre's claims. These articles provide further information about the nature of Pierre's invention. Most importantly, they show that his 'Patriarch of Antioch' was modelled on, and explicitly connected to, a contemporary alchemist in whom Boyle already had an interest: Francesco Giuseppe Borri.

Resumen
A system of 27 asterisms, or nakṣatras, plays an important role in Indian astronomy and calendrical science. The present convention is that the ecliptic is divided into 27 equal parts each 13°20' long commencing from one initial point. These arcs are called nakṣatras. Again a bright or prominent star of each division is called yogatārā bearing the name of the are division e.g., Kṛttikā as nakṣatra means an are division and as a yogatārā it means the star η Tauri of the Pleiades group.The origin of this asterism system is very old. The names of these stars appearin Vedic litrature. The Taittirīya, Kāṭhaka, Maitrāyaṇī Saṃhitas and the 19th book of Atharva Veda, each has given a list of 27 nakṣatras (the last two have included an additional star, Abhijit (αLyrae), making a total of 28 nakṣatras). All these lists always begin with the name kṛttikas (the star group Pleiades), and order of names of stars are more or less the same. Some of the stars changed their names in different hands; but they are always either star groups or single stars, and never arc divisions.

The asterism observed in white radiation X-ray diffraction images (topographs) of extended cracks in silicon is investigated and found to be associated with material that is close to breakout and surrounded by extensive cracking. It is a measure of the mechanical damage occurring when the fracture planes do not follow the low-index cleavage planes associated with the crystal structure. It is not related to a propensity for some cracked wafers to shatter during subsequent high-temperature processing. There is no correlation between crack morphology and alignment of an indenter with respect to the orientation of a silicon wafer, the cracks being generated from the apices of the indenter and having threefold symmetry for Berkovich indents and fourfold symmetry for Vickers indents. X-ray diffraction imaging (XRDI) of indents does not reveal this underlying symmetry and the images exhibit a very substantial degree of variation in their extent. This arises because the XRDI contrast is sensitive to the long-range strain field around the indent and breakout reduces the extent of this long-range strain field. Breakout is also detected in the loss of symmetry in the short-range strain field imaged by scanning micro-Raman spectroscopy. Weak fourfold symmetric features at the extremes of the images, and lying along 〈110〉 directions, are discussed in the context of slip generated below the room-temperature indents. Scanning electron microscopy imaging of the region around an indent during focused ion beam milling has permitted the three-dimensional reconstruction of the crack morphology. The surface-breaking Palmqvist cracks are found to be directly connected to the median subsurface cracks, and the presence of extensive lateral cracks is a prerequisite for material breakout at indenter loads above 200 mN. The overall crack shape agrees with that predicted from simulation.

The present paper restricts to the analysis of some passages from the Vedic literature, viz. Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa and Vedāṅga Jyautiṣa, from the view point of mathematical astronomy.The Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa in 2.1.2.1 to 2.1.2.5, refers to some ritual in which some fire has to be set up. It recommends Kṛttikā as the nakṣatra or the lunar asterism under which to set up the fire. For, there are some special features that Śatapatha-Brāhmana obviously considers as good points. According to the text, one good point about Kṛttikā is that it is ′the most numerous′; secondly, it rises ′in the east′.

As the 7th brightest star and the most luminous star in the solar neighborhood, Rigel (β Orionis) is a very intriguing object. This blue supergiant (B8 Iab; V-mag = +0.05–0.18-mag; B–V = -0.03), at a distance (from Hipparcos) of ~240±35 pc has a 〈MV〉 = -6.7 mag. The following physical properties were determined via spectroscopic, photometric, and interferometric studies: L/L⊙ ≈ 66,000 K; Teff ≈ 12,000 K; M/M⊙ ≈ 17±3; R/R⊙ ≈ 70; τ ≈ 3–10 Myr. Interestingly Rigel has similar physical properties with the 12th mag blue supergiant progenitor of SN 1987A: Sanduleak -69° 202a. Thus Rigel (along with its co-asterism Betelgeuse) are likely to be the nearest progenitors of a Type II supernova. Such a nearby explosion would be V ≈ -11th mag (similar to a quarter moon).

Abstract Asterids are one of the most successful angiosperm lineages, exhibiting extensive morphological diversity and including a number of important crops. Despite their biological prominence and value to humans, the deep asterid phylogeny has not been fully resolved, and the evolutionary landscape underlying their radiation remains unknown. To resolve the asterid phylogeny, we sequenced 213 transcriptomes/genomes and combined them with other data sets, representing all accepted orders and nearly all families of asterids. We show fully supported monophyly of asterids, Berberidopsidales as sister to asterids, monophyly of all orders except Icacinales, Aquifoliales, and Bruniales, and monophyly of all families except Icacinaceae and Ehretiaceae. Novel taxon placements benefited from the expanded sampling with living collections from botanical gardens, resolving hitherto uncertain relationships. The remaining ambiguous placements here are likely due to limited sampling and could be addressed in the future with relevant additional taxa. Using our well-resolved phylogeny as reference, divergence time estimates support an Aptian (Early Cretaceous) origin of asterids and the origin of all orders before the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary. Ancestral state reconstruction at the family level suggests that the asterid ancestor was a woody terrestrial plant with simple leaves, bisexual, and actinomorphic flowers with free petals and free anthers, a superior ovary with a style, and drupaceous fruits. Whole-genome duplication (WGD) analyses provide strong evidence for 33 WGDs in asterids and one in Berberidopsidales, including four suprafamilial and seven familial/subfamilial WGDs. Our results advance the understanding of asterid phylogeny and provide numerous novel evolutionary insights into their diversification and morphological evolution.

Subaru is known by many throughout the world as the Japanese name for the Pleiades. Having some basis as a seasonal marker in antiquity and later appearance in the development of national mythology, imagery related to Subaru developed to reflect cultural values, and its seasonal appearance served as a practical guide for numerous activities of the culture. To gain a basic understanding of how symbolic associations with Subaru have been inspired by its place in the heavens as well as its use for citizens, four areas of interest are viewed: (1) astronomical and seasonal significance of the asterism as reflected in early Asian cosmology, (2) associations in the national mythology of the sun goddess Amaterasu, (3) lore found throughout the islands related to practical uses of Subaru as a marker for time keeping, agriculture, fishing, and other activities, and (4) individual and cultural symbolism associated with archetypal identification.

AbstractIn 1677, Georges Pierre des Clozets visited Robert Boyle and told him that he had been approved for membership in the Asterism, a secret international society of alchemical masters, headed by Pierre's patron Georges du Mesnillet, the Patriarch of Antioch. Extensive correspondence followed, replete with gifts and bizarre claims, until Pierre vanished in August 1678. This paper links several new documents—articles in the Mercure galant and the Gazette de France and a manuscript account by another convinced admirer of Pierre—to my previous study of him, particularly in regard to Pierre's claim to be working with the Patriarch to reunite Eastern and Western Churches. Dating from before and after Boyle's involvement, these sources add fresh details about Pierre and his other contacts, and show the consistency of Pierre's stories and the credibility he fashioned as he travelled around Europe convincing people of his claims alchemical and otherwise.

X-ray diffraction peak broadening is discussed in terms of line broadening and rocking-curve broadening in a novel theoretical description. The nonlocal strain tensor is factorized by using the method of polar decomposition instead of the more conventional separation into symmetrical and antisymmetrical components. A number of X-ray line-broadening and rocking-curve experiments on the same single crystals or individual grains in bulk polycrystals prove that plastic deformation produces strained subgrains mutually rotated by rigid-body rotations. The novel theoretical description appropriately accounts for the rigid-body rotation and strain at the same time and provides straightforward separation of the two effects of line and rocking-curve broadening in the radial and normal directions of the diffraction vector. The mathematical results are discussed in terms of experiments of X-ray diffraction, Laue asterism and electron backscatter diffraction. From the experimental results it is shown that the simultaneous evaluation of line and rocking-curve broadening provides qualitative information about the redundant and geometrically necessary character of dislocations, not available if only one or the other is accessible.

When Ti-doped α-Al2O3 single crystals are annealed at 1400°C, needle-like rutile TiO2 precipitates form on the basal plane of α-Al2O3 and cause the asterism in star sapphire. Tetragonal rutile has a = 0.459 nm and c = 0.296 nm, and has the following orientation relationship with the α-Al2O3 matrix: (100)r // (0001)s and <011>r // <100>s, where the subscripts r and s refer to the rutile and sapphire, respectively. Moon and Phillips studied the precipitation in natural blue sapphire containing both Fe and Ti. They found that rutile precipitates formed after annealing at 1350°C but an orthorhombic α-TiO2 precipitate formed after annealing at 1150°C. In this study, Ti-doped α-Al2O3 single crystals were annealed at 1300°C. TEM specimens were prepared with their plane normals parallel to <110>s, <100>s and <0001>s, respectively, and ion beam thinned to electron transparency.Three different types of precipitates are present in the α-Al2O3 matrix. The first is the needlelike rutile precipitate lying on (0001)s, with the needle axes parallel to <100>s.

W artykule zwrócono uwagę na socjologiczny kontekst stworzenia jednej z najbardziej znanych postaci rysunkowych – Gala Asterixa. Przedstawiono pochodzenie jego autorów oraz ich prace, będące wyrazem ich drogi życiowej, podejmowanych decyzji oraz światopoglądu. Ważne znaczenie ma tutaj zagadnienie migracji oraz nawiązywania do własnych losów. Losy twórcy Asterixa są zatem pewnego rodzaju przykładem na bogactwo i złożoność kultur, które finalnie mogą przynieść bardzo dobre rezultaty w tworzeniu dzieł uniwersalnych, zrozumiałych dla każdego i cieszących się wielką popularnością. The asterism, or star effect, present in star sapphire (Ti-doped A12O3) single crystals is known to arise from the needle-like rutile(r) (TiO2) precipitates in the sapphire(s) matrix. The specific orientation relationship between the precipitates and the matrix is {100}r//{0003}s and <011>r//<1010>s . In this work we report a HREM study of the rutile/sapphire interface.The cross-section perpendicular to the needle axis of a very small precipitate, which is coherent, or has just one misfit dislocation at its interface, is a rhombus; the precipitate/matrix interface (habit plane) is {111}r{1123}s. As the coherency break down and misfit dislocations are introduced into the interface, the shape of the cross-section becomes nearly square; the two orthogonal interfaces are {100}r//0003}s and {011}r//{1120}s. Larger precipitates show rectangular interfaces elongated along the {100}r//{0003}s interface (Fig.l). A regular array of misfit dislocations with Burger vector b = 1/3<0001>S are present at the {011}r//{1120}s interface, the mean distance between every two adjacent 1/3<0001>S misfit dislocations being 8.7 nm which compensates exactly the 5.9% lattice mismatch estimated from the lattice constants of these two structures. Similarly, a regular array of misfit dislocations with Burgers vector b = 1/3<1010>S at the {100}r//{0003}s interface compensates the 4.5% lattice mismatch at that interface.

This paper presents results of SEM and EDS study in some Brazilian gemstones. Emerald from Campos Verdes (GO) contains several mineral inclusions as talc, dolomite, chromite, pyrite, magnetite, etc. Sylvite crystals was firstly identified by SEM/EDS. These salt inclusions suggest percolation of K-bearing fluids during emerald crystallization. Emerald from Campos Verdes present higher concentration of Cr+3 in the outer green zones than in the inner colourless zones, showing that ion is a chromophore in this gemstone. SEM and EDS results combined with optical microscopy analyses demonstrate that amethyst from Rio Grande do Sul State (RS) contain needle-like inclusions of goethite and not cacoxenite and rutile as suggest by other workers. By these techniques it was possible to identify pyrolusite and hollandite as late minerals inside agate and quartz geodes from RS. SEM and EDS data of corundum from Barra Velha (SC) show that silk effect is produced by diaspore inclusions. These techniques also reveal that the asterism in this corundum is produced by empty needle-like channels instead of the presence rutile inclusions as commonly observed in other worldwide deposits. Rounded zircon inclusions are common in corundum from Indaiá, Palmeiras, Caputira and Campo Belo (MG). Sillimanite and/or kyanite inclusions in corundum crystals of secondary deposits from Indaiá suggest a metamorphic origin to this gemstone. Corundum from Caputira also contains several rounded rutile inclusions, which are diagnostic for this occurrence.

The starfish is an advantageous organism in which to investigate developmental modes. It is widely known that maternal substances accumulated in the course of oogenesis affect various developmental phenomena. Vitellogen is the most abundant maternal substance in the egg and has been studied in various species including sea urchins. Vitellogen and the vitellogenin gene have been analysed with regard to their relevance to developmental modes in two Heliocidaris species (Byrne et al., 1999) and Japanese sea urchins (Yokota & Amemiya, 1998). In starfish, however, relatively little is known about the yolk and yolk protein.

Context. Open clusters (OCs) are popular tracers of the structure and evolutionary history of the Galactic disc. The OC population is often considered to be complete within 1.8 kpc of the Sun. The recent Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) allows the latter claim to be challenged. Aims. We perform a systematic search for new OCs in the direction of Perseus using precise and accurate astrometry from Gaia DR2. Methods. We implemented a coarse-to-fine search method. First, we exploited spatial proximity using a fast density-aware partitioning of the sky via a k-d tree in the spatial domain of Galactic coordinates, (l, b). Secondly, we employed a Gaussian mixture model in the proper motion space to tag fields quickly around OC candidates. Thirdly, we applied an unsupervised membership assignment method, UPMASK, to scrutinise the candidates. We visually inspected colour-magnitude diagrams to validate the detected objects. Finally, we performed a diagnostic to quantify the significance of each identified over-density in proper motion and in parallax space. Results. We report the discovery of 41 new stellar clusters. This represents an increment of at least 20% of the previously known OC population in this volume of the Milky Way. We also report on the clear identification of NGC 886, an object previously considered an asterism. This study challenges the previous claim of a near-complete sample of OCs up to 1.8 kpc. Our results reveal that this claim requires revision, and a complete census of nearby OCs is yet to be found.

This paper suggests a method for refining a massive amount of collective intelligence data and visualizing it with a multilevel sentiment network in order to understand the relevant information in an intuitive and semantic way. This semantic interpretation method minimizes network learning in the system as a fixed network topology only exists as a guideline to help users understand. Furthermore, it does not need to discover every single node to understand the characteristics of each clustering within the network. After extracting and analyzing the sentiment words from the movie review data, we designed a movie network based on the similarities between the words. The network formed in this way will appear as a multilevel sentiment network visualization after the following three steps: (1) design a heatmap visualization to effectively discover the main emotions on each movie review; (2) create a two-dimensional multidimensional scaling (MDS) map of semantic word data to facilitate semantic understanding of network and then fix the movie network topology on the map; (3) create an asterism graphic with emotions to allow users to easily interpret node groups with similar sentiment words. The research also presents a virtual scenario about how our network visualization can be used as a movie recommendation system. We next evaluated our progress to determine whether it would improve user cognition for multilevel analysis experience compared to the existing network system. Results showed that our method provided improved user experience in terms of cognition. Thus, it is appropriate as an alternative method for semantic understanding.

Resumen
It's a good thing that we're starting to meet every four years rather than every five. There has been tremendous progress in understanding the properties and evolution of central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) since the last meeting in Innsbruck in 1992. Much of the credit is due to new spectra and images obtained at observatories that weren't even in existence four years ago. Table 1 lists most of the space observatories used by astronomers reporting at this symposium. The ones marked with the asterisk are new to this conference. The double asterisks for the Hubble Space Telescope instruments remind us that the telescope was repaired in December 1993. The reference gives the identification of the poster paper given at this meeting. We can look forward to similar improvements in ground-based observatories to be reported at the next meeting.

A novel marine bacterium, strain KMD 001T, was isolated from the starfish Asterias amurensis, which inhabits the East Sea of Korea. Strain KMD 001T was aerobic, light-yellow pigmented and Gram-stain-negative. Analyses of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain KMD 001T represents a novel lineage within the class Gammaproteobacteria. Strain KMD 001T is closely related to the genera Endozoicomonas and Zooshikella, which belong to the family Hahellaceae and to the order Oceanospirillales. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain KMD 001T shows similarities of approximately 91.8–94.6 % with the above-mentioned genera. The DNA G+C content of KMD 001T is 47.6 mol%. It contains Q-9 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The predominant fatty acids were determined to be anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C14 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. Strain KMD 001T should be assigned to a novel bacterial genus within the class Gammaproteobacteria based on its phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics. The name Kistimonas asteriae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMD 001T (=KCCM 90076T =JCM 15607T).

Abstract Plant organ size and shape are major agronomic traits that depend on cell division and expansion, which are both regulated by complex gene networks. In several eudicot species belonging to the rosid clade, organ growth is controlled by a repressor complex consisting of PEAPOD (PPD) and KINASE-INDUCIBLE DOMAIN INTERACTING (KIX) proteins. The role of these proteins in asterids, which together with the rosids constitute most of the core eudicot species, is unknown. We used Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats–CRISPR-associated protein 9 genome editing to target SlKIX8 and SlKIX9 in the asterid model species tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and analyzed loss-of-function phenotypes. Loss-of-function of SlKIX8 and SlKIX9 led to the production of enlarged, dome-shaped leaves and these leaves exhibited increased expression of putative Solanum lycopersicum PPD (SlPPD target genes. Unexpectedly, kix8 kix9 mutants carried enlarged fruits with increased pericarp thickness due to cell expansion. At the molecular level, protein interaction assays indicated that SlKIX8 and SlKIX9 act as adaptors between the SlPPD and SlTOPLESS co-repressor proteins. Our results show that KIX8 and KIX9 are regulators of organ growth in asterids and can be used in strategies to improve important traits in produce such as thickness of the fruit flesh.

In this paper, the authors focus on the deployment and testing of various Open Source Asterisk Services in an enterprise level communication system. Selected services are listed in this paper that can be used to implement a telephone system with good Quality of Services (QoS) and good Quality of Experience (QoE) from the personal user to enterprise level users.

Currently, the development of research around VoIP experiences a tremendous growth. In the community of open source Asterisk represents a reliable alternative for a lower cost solution. In this same community as the SIP protocol is a supplement to the more asterisk PBX. To share the benefits claimed by proponents of free software co-existence with other Asterisk server is not yet proven. In this context this paper we show a comparison of the use of simplified resource material for the apache server using the HTTP protocol and server that uses the asterisk SIP.

The secure interconnection of two enterprise PLC network is implemented via the telecommunication tunnel with security grant using the Cisco routers. The connection between two Asterisk PBXs is designed in context of the establishment of the tunnel. The subject of the article is also cross/connection of exchanges Asterisk PBX and hardware PBX - IP Panasonic PBX K-NS500.
