Engineers and materials scientists are constantly working to improve the quality of our built environments and vehicles, including noise levels and vibration. The researchers pursuing the duel goals of safety and comfort are increasingly being challenged as the projects they work on advance technologically, in size and are constructed with new materials. Buildings grow taller and must compensate for greater movement and vibrations from wind or shifting foundations. Cars especially are undergoing drastic changes that require a rethinking of the material and designs of their frames, panels, doors and windows. The advent of electric motors for example, has reduced overall noise but shifted the frequency of sound higher, making them more uncomfortable. Assistant Professor Shuichi Akasaka, who is based in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, is carrying out research to design new materials that reduce vibration and noise, and create the quiet, safe automobiles and living spaces of the future.

Resumen
In today's society the continuously increasing consumption of raw materials and the associated impacts on the ecosystem tend to be a frequently discussed topic. Especially automobile companies are faced to develop new driving concepts due to the emerging energy turnaround. Usually the components of the conventional drive are replaced by an electric engine including the required energy storage. Without structural changes regarding the chassis this procedure causes an increase in the vehicle ́s weight (Conversion Design). Therefore a new approach is to integrate the battery as a load-bearing member in the vehicle structure and additionally use a weight-optimized multi-material design of the body (Purpose Design). By savings of 25% of the weight of a compact-class vehicle body, a resource-saving and energy-efficient design of the entire vehicle can be achieved. Certainly the innovative multi-material construction contributes significantly to reduce the total energy consumption of the vehicle during the use phase. Based on a Lifecycle-Assessment (LCA) the environmental sustainability of the Purpose Design will be evaluated and compared to the approach of the Conversion Design. In addition to the weight savings of the multi-material body secondary weight reductions regarding the energy storage will be taken into account. The aim is to assess the ecological advantages of the lightweight solution throughout the entire product life cycle comprising the extraction of raw materials, production of the components, use of the product and end of life including the recycling of components. However, these investigations will be carried out for the modified chassis and the lightweight constructed multi-material body. Hence, the processes of the individual life cycle phases will be collected, inventorial analysis carried out and impact assessments performed. According to the LCA it will be tested, if the additional expenses in raw material extraction, production and recycling of the lightweight body justify the expected ecological advantage in the use phase. A final overall analysis will provide information on the actual efficiency and sustainability of the Purpose Design. Due to the parallel creation of the LCA data during the development process the LCA results furthermore serve to detect and monitor significant shortcomings on component and assembly level.

Resumen
In the 21st century, transportation brought great convenience to people, but at the same time, automobile transportation is the major factor causing greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Movements of the world towards green environments, there is hike in use and production of electric vehicles (energy vehicles). However, with the continuous growth in the number of energy vehicles, it is necessary for the government to provide strong support in the construction of charging piles. Real-time and effective management has become a practical problem for the relevant departments which needs to be solved. This paper uses the information research method to fuse the huge amount of heterogeneous data generated by the charging pile resultant to the new energy electric vehicle in the vehicle network and introduces cloud computing as its storage module to facilitate the storage and related expansion of the big data. This paper proposes a system scheme of heterogeneous data fusion based on cloud computing for the acquisition, storage, and fusion of heterogeneous data in the vehicle network. After testing the results, it shows that the system is stable and effective in practical application, which can meet the design requirements of the system. What is the significance of analyzing big data of charging point? Considering from the supply side, obtaining the user’s charging behaviour data is helpful to build a digital map of the charging pile of new energy vehicles, connect the service information between the vehicle enterprises and the charging pile enterprises, and provide the most comprehensive and effective real-time charging information covering the widest range of vehicles, which can solve many problems of information asymmetry in the current charging information service.

Resumen
On behalf of the editorial committee of International Journal of Automation Technology, I would like to sincerely ask all of you a favour of me to activate this journal since I am convinced that the automation technology is indispensable to the convenience and prosperity of human being. The automation technology began with the development and introduction of numerical control (NC) machine tools in the latter of 1950s. In 1960s, the technology was applied to assemble electric goods and automobiles together with the development of a wide variety of automationrelated methods such as industrial robots, semiconductor technologies and so on. In 1970s, this tendency had greatly affected the automation of production systems, which was called FA (Factory Automation or Flexible Manufacturing System), that is, flexible systems to rapidly cope with the change in the sort and quantity of products. The construction of FA is still continuing even now. The current state of art in production automation is the evolution by making the most of IT (Information Technology), where there are infinite tasks to be solved, for example, the cooperation with design, manufacturing and sales, life cycle control of products from production to waste by IC tag, product liability management, lean production taking account of environment protection and energy saving, product development with individuality and characteristic, production sustaining human skill, manufacture of high value-added products, development of future products, etc. After the bubble disruption in 1990, Japan has been suffering from the economical recession for 15 years, thus resulting in hanging low of automation technology development as well as decreased equipment investment. In addition, our serious problem in Japan is the disappearance of valuable technologies and manufacturing spirit by the mass retirement of engineers who have born the automation technology and supported excellent product manufacture. Thus, it is an important issue to improve and develop the automation technologies further. From the above mentioned viewpoint, the journal focuses on the advanced automation technologies ranging from fundamental technologies to a variety of industrial applications, which meet the requirements, especially from industries. The journal covers all sorts of automation technologies regarding design, manufacturing, assembly, inspection, transportation, logistics, machine tools, robotic system, control system and instruments, and so on. There are some journals with respect to the automation specific to scientific and fundamental research, however, no journal exists, which aims at providing engineering researches and practical developments. Thus, the journal takes up a large amount of practical examples relating advanced automation technologies as review papers, research and development papers, news and interview so that the readers can take interest in the journal. The editorial committee wants IJAT to serve engineers and managers for the requirement of automation technology developments, and is all concerned for your contribution to IJAT.

Resumen
In human-operated mechanical systems such as automobiles, electric bicycles, and electric wheelchairs, energy saving is an important criterion. Hybrid systems consisting of combustion engines and electric motors have found successful applications in automobiles. However, it is difficult to apply this type of hybrid system to personal mobilities and industrial machines in a factory, as there is a requirement to reduce their energy consumption owing to recent environmental and energy resource problems. Therefore, a previous study has focused on the use of a mechanical spring as a regenerative brake in a hybrid bicycle. This study, however, presents a new type of hybrid system that includes the use of a mechanical spring. An experimental wheeled mobile system is designed, and its effectiveness is confirmed through comparative experiments in which a reduction of more than 30% in the consumed energy is achieved in acceleration periods as compared to a conventional system.

Resumen
The knowledge about the injury source and correlation of riders in car-electric bicycle accident will be helpful in the cross validation of traces and vehicle safety design. In order to know more information about such kind of knowledge, 57 true car-electric bicycle accidents were reconstructed by PC-Crash and then data on injury information of riders were collected directly from the reconstructed cases. These collected data were validated by some existing research results firstly, and then 4 abnormal cases were deleted according to the statistical method. Finally, conclusions can be obtained according to the data obtained from the remaining 53 cases. Direct injuries of the head and right leg are from the road pavement upon low speed; the source laws of indirect head injuries are not obvious. Upon intermediate and high speed, the injuries of the above parts are from automobiles. Injuries of the left leg, femur, and right knee are from automobiles; left knee injuries are from automobiles, the road pavement and automobiles, respectively, upon low, intermediate, and high speed. The source laws of indirect torso injuries are not obvious upon intermediate and low speed, which are from automobiles upon high speed, while direct torso injuries are from the road pavement. And there is no high correlation between all parts of the injury of riders. The largest correlation coefficient was the head-left femur and left femur-right femur, which was 0.647, followed by the head-right femur (0.638) and head-torso which was 0.617.

Resumen
PurposeThe purpose of this exploratory paper is to analyze how complexity of an artifact affects designing processes of its mechanical, electric, and software sub‐systems.Design/methodology/approachBased on existing empirical research and frameworks of axiomatic design, product architecture, and product development process, the paper proposes a simple model of functional and structural design to examine how engineers' ways of thinking differ among mechanical, electric and software engineers.FindingsThis paper argues that products and artifacts tend to become complex (often with integral architecture) when customers' functional requirements become more demanding and societal/technological constraints become stricter, and that complex mechanical products are often accompanied by electronic control units with complex functions. This implies that designing complex mechanical products often requires intensive coordination among mechanical, electric and software engineers. This, however, is not easy, as engineers' way of thinking is often different among the three areas: mechanical engineers want to complete structural design information first to build prototypes; electrical and software engineers (the latter in particular) request complete functional information first.Research limitations/implicationsIn order to solve the above‐mentioned mechanical‐electrical‐software coordination problem, engineers need to share basic design concept of the product in question. Heavy‐weight product managers who infuse the product concept to the project members might be the key to this coordination. Companies may need to make sure that their product development processes are friendly to all of the three groups of engineers.Originality/valueAlthough designing complex artifacts has been a popular research theme since H. Simon's seminal work, issues of organizational coordination for developing complex products, with increasing managerial importance, need further research. With an empirical case of the automobile and electronic products, the present paper is unique in that it combines frameworks of product development processes, product architectures, and organizational capabilities.

Resumen
Recent concerns relating to global warming caused by greenhouse gases, coupled with a growing awareness of the limited available resources of fossil fuels, have spurred an interest in alternative energy powered vehicles. This paper describes the analysis, development, and testing of an aerodynamic vehicle powered by photovoltaic cells. The primary components of the vehicle are the composite material body, the aluminum space frame, the wheel hubs and front suspension assembly, the drive train, and the electrical system. The frame was designed using finite element analysis with the components of the frame modeled as beam elements. The body, designed to have a very high strength-to-weight ratio, was of graphite/Kevlar/Nomex sandwich construction. Testing was carried out using the three-point bend test to determine the optimal sandwich cross-sectional configuration. The design of the front suspension, the wheel hubs, and the power transmission are also discussed. The electrical system, based on a monocrystalline photovoltaic cell assembly, and silver-zinc storage cells, is also described. Finally, results of the optimization routine developed are also described.

Resumen
The amount of construction waste (CW) at building sites is highly variable, for instance the CW generation index ranges between 50-300 dm3 per square meters of gross floor area. Today there is still a lack of knowledge about variables (building design, construction process, construction technologies, etc.) affecting the CW generation. The objective of this paper is to analyse the influence of multi-storey building design and some construction processes on the CW generation indexes. The CW generation was analysed for two groups of buildings with two different construction processes; one with plumbing and electric services installed inside the masonry element and the other with plumbing and electric services installed onto the masonry element and covered with water-resistant drywall system (reducing the construction waste generation). The gross floor area directly affects the amount of executed construction works in a building site. Since the most important works (concrete, masonry and cladding) for CW generation is related to gross floor area, gross floor of buildings is also directly related to CW generation. For buildings with gross area varying from 20,000 to 80,000 m2, there is a reduction of approximately 18% of construction waste only changing the plumbing and electric services installation system, from embedded in the masonry element to installed onto the masonry element and covered with water-resistant drywall system.

Resumen
Highly sensitive and flexible composite sensors with pressure and temperature sensing abilities are of great importance in human motion monitoring, robotic skins, and automobile seats when checking the boarding status. Several studies have been conducted to improve the temperature-pressure sensitivity; however, they require a complex fabrication process for micro-nanostructures, which are material-dependent. Therefore, there is a need to develop the structural designs to improve the sensing abilities. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible composite with an enhanced pressure and temperature sensing performance. Its structural design consists of a multilayered composite construction with an elastic modulus gradient. Controlled stress concentration and distribution induced by a micropatterned structure between the layers improves its pressure and temperature sensing performance. The proposed composite sensor can monitor a wide range of pressure and temperature stimuli and also has potential applications as an automotive seat sensor for simultaneous human temperature detection and occupant weight sensing.

The weak electric organ discharges (EODs) of gymnotiform knife fishes can be readily amplified with a wideband amplifier connected to submerged electrodes. The output from such an amplifier can then be monitored with audio speakers or digitized for subsequent analysis. Commercially available devices are expensive and usually require mains electrical power. Here we provide design notes and instructions for the construction and calibration of a cheap, portable, battery-powered, AC-coupled wideband bio-amplifier. This device was designed to allow electric fishes to be located in the field, and also to permit the relatively noise-free acquisition of EOD waveforms from specimens held in temporary captivity. This contribution is intended to encourage students of neotropical ichthyology to explore electric signaling in gymnotiform fishes.

Resumen
This paper titled “Study of composite helical spring using glass fibre with Araldite LY556 and XY54”. Currently, the composite materials in the automobile sector are used for construction of the body, interiors, chassis, hoods, electrical components etc...these components are in simplest form and also they are regular in shape and easy to manufacture. However the design of suspension system and complicated structures in the automobile are quite difficult to bring out the same shape and performance. The most important no gap of steel springs suspension are limited corrosion resistance, long-lasting manufacturing process and weight. This paper brings out incredibly a simple method to prepare the composite helical spring for any dynamic application. The glass fibre and resin mixed with 70:30 ratio and it is tested by compression testing machine as per ASTM. The mechanical properties, such as maximum load carrying capacity, deflection, stiffness Youngs’modulus, Shear stress and strain energy are determined using compression testing machine. The objective of this study is to reduce the weight of the spring, to obtain good surface finish, similar to steel spring, novel manufacturing methodology and identification of failure point rather than the maximum load.

Resumen
Crude oil resources in the world continue to diminish; automobile, agricultural machinery and construction machinery manufacturing companies are placing more emphasis on energy efficient series hydraulic hybrid systems which can replace their conventional transmission systems. Series hydraulic hybrid system is a mechatronics system with two source of power (that includes prime mover and hydro-pneumatic accumulator) which drives the vehicle. Even though, it has been proven as an energy efficient system, sizing of the components or sub-system for automobiles has got a major influence on energy efficiency of vehicle. In this paper, a power bond graph approach is used to model the dynamics of series hydraulic hybrid system and simulation results elucidate various modes of operations. It also shows the dynamic response of hydro-pneumatic accumulator, prime-mover and system output speed. Further, design optimization of system is carried out to optimize the physical /process parameters for the maximum system's output energy that, leads to increase in energy efficiency and environmental friendly vehicle.

Resumen
With the continuous development and widespread attention of electric propulsion technology in traditional transportation fields such as automobiles and trains, the distributed propeller propulsion technology applied to electric or hybrid electric medium and small scale aircrafts has become a new topic in aviation research. This paper presents a preliminary design scheme of a distributed propeller electric propulsion transport aircraft firstly. Then, based on Reynolds average N-S equations, combined with the SA turbulence model, and replaced the real distributed propellers with simplified disk model, the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft with and without slipstream under the condition of low speed and high thrust at low altitude are analyzed. Finally, the effects of pressure distribution, pitching moment characteristics and wing flow on distributed propellers are studied in detailed. The results show that the lift and drag of the aircraft with slipstream are both larger than without slipstream and with slipstream effect, the pitching moment of the wing decreases, the pitching moment of the tail increases. When the tail is far away or completely inside the region of slipstream, the difference of pitching moment of the tail with and without slipstream is little, and the difference is obvious as the tail is only partially in the region of slipstream; When the diameter of distributed propellers is far larger than the wing thickness, more propeller power is used to shove air flow away from the surface area of the wing, and resulting in an insignificant increase in the coefficient of lift.

Resumen
In the article on the basis of the complex analysis of sources and scientific literature the attempt to investigate historical circumstances of development and construction of shunting electric locomotives at the Dnipropetrovsk electric locomotive plant has been made. It was found that during the 1960s and 1970s, the team of designers of the Dnipropetrovsk plant, having strong research and production potential, at the request of the Ministry of Railways of the USSR developed and built unique samples of shunting electric locomotives of the VL41 and VL26 series to meet the needs of Soviet main-line railways with modern high-tech electric vehicles. It is proved that in the absence of thorough experience and, accordingly, the possibility of a rapid technological breakthrough in the development of main-line locomotives, during the experimental operation of shunting electric locomotives VL41 and VL26, several design shortcomings were identified, which led to their further use exclusively on the house tracks of enterprises, and designers of Dnipropetrovsk plant later focused on the development and construction of traction units for industrial application commissioned by the Ministry of Ferrous Metallurgy of the USSR. At the same time, the construction of the main-line railway equipment to the order of the Ministry of Railways allowed the staff of the enterprise to gain valuable experience, which was later used in the implementation of the renewal program of rolling stock of Ukrzaliznytsia. Although today the Dnipropetrovsk plant is in decline, the analysis of historical circumstances of formation and design and technological heritage of electric locomotive construction in Ukraine is of fundamental importance both in the general perspective of the development of domestic transport engineering, and the railway industry in particular. Further study of the history of Dnipropetrovsk electric locomotive plant requires clarification of the historical circumstances of institutionalization of the Special Design and Technology Bureau of the enterprise from the creation of industrial electric locomotives and traction units to the development and re-equipment of main traction rolling stock and specialized repair equipment within the state enterprise “Ukrainian Research Design Institute of Electric Locomotive Engineering”.

Resumen
Centrifugal compressors find their use in many areas especially in turbochargers which are used extensively in automobiles and in aircrafts and defence systems. This paper presents the design of a complete test facility for testing centrifugal compressors. It starts with design of a Combustor - the driving unit for the test facility. The Centrifugal compressor being tested is a part of a turbocharger. The combustor feeds the Turbine side of the test section with hot gases for running the compressor at desired speeds. This particular choice eliminates the need for the inclusion of heavy speed reducing gears when an electric motor is used as the driving unit. The designed combustor was numerically simulated and subsequently optimized for the given working conditions. The simulated results showed good agreement with the target criteria. Further, the choice and placement of the measuring instruments for the entire test rig and their permissible deviations are listed and finally the basic operating sequence for the entire rig is also drafted for in-house development of automation of the entire test rig thereby making it a complete guide for the setting up of such facility, hitherto establishing a complete guideline of all subsystems which will enable in building such similar facilities in varying magnitudes in the future.

A 60-year-old Brazilian university campus reflects its development actions throughout history. The degradation of its water streams and automobiles prioritization has significantly impacted the ecosystems’ resilience and the university’s activities. This article explores data analytics and visualization of Wi-Fi authentication processes, whose data have been stored in the last 10 years. This noteworthy connections database is a powerful tool, still overlooked due to the remarkable risks for users’ privacy. Brazil has followed 2018 European regulations to protect data privacy, when working with personal data. Therefore, we present an anonymization process that prevents one to identify and distinguish a subject within a set of subjects of the database. Three studies illustrate our examination of data potential to understand the university’s dynamics. These inquiries present relevant contributions to the process of planning and implementing campus green areas at the rivers’ edges, pedestrian and cycle paths, and places to facilitate interdisciplinary encounters.

Resumen
Apart from woodwork, brickwork, all other formworks are of metalwork. Thus engineering devices, equipment, machineries and infrastructures are made possible with the use of welding machines, be it carbide or arc – welding type. In Nigeria, where the cost of imported goods rises astronomically in accordance with the foreign exchange rates, the need to fabricate this very important equipment became of important necessity. In this paper, a single-phase 6KVA, 240VAC/30-70 VDC electric arc welding machine was designed and constructed using locally available materials. The different operating current required, arcing time, the heat generated by the arc, the minimum arc gap, the fluxite coated electrode, oxidation of the molten materials by the surrounding air where some of the designed parameters that determined the auto-transformer specific magnetic loading and specific electric loading. Cooling medium, integral switch, the rectifier circuits and the tanking of the transformer designed determined the equipment production. The locally fabricated AC/DC air cooled electric arc welding machine capable of withstanding 200A, when subjected to insulation resistance test, no – load test, short circuit test and on-load test to ascertain its performance characteristics were very satisfactory.

With the further promotion of electric enterprise information construction, industrialization and informationization have been deeply integrated. Power system safety and stability is highly dependent upon electric information system. However, as the electric business higher integrated, data more interactive, and structures more complex, electric information system would face serious security risks. Any simple system may become the "short board" of enterprise information security protection architecture, and any vulnerability may bring serious consequences. In this paper, we propose an information security framework for electric system lifecycle based on typical information security model. As the framework widely applied, the overall safety capacity of electric enterprise has increased substantially.

Resumen
The dwindling energy resources and the compliance of international climate protection goals lead to a rethink in the automobile sector. One result of this rethink is the increasing distribution of electric vehicles in the last years. This development includes a new challenge for the training sector. For example, the implementation of a high-voltage system into automobiles involves a new hazard potential for people, who work on electric vehicles. Therefore, the employees in the areas of vehicle repair trade, rescue services, towing services, and other relevant sectors need a good qualification for working on electric vehicles. On the one hand, a lot of specialized training programs have already been developed in the area of academic education. On the other hand, there is a great need of training programs for professionals (e.g. motor mechanics, firefighters). Hence, this paper clarifies the current requirements in the education sector and the new hazard potential by working on electric vehicles. Moreover, an approach for the development of a specialized training program for working on electric vehicles is presented in this paper as well. The focus of this training program is on the improvement of the learning process by a blended learning concept with an adaptive modular design.

Resumen
The article attempts to investigate the historical circumstances of the development and serial construction of narrow-gauge electric locomotives at the Dnepropetrovsk Electric Locomotive Plant based on a comprehensive analysis of sources and scientific literature. It is determined that during the 1960s and 1990s the staff of the Special Design and Technology Bureau of the Dnipropetrovsk Plant, having a strong research and production potential, developed and created projects of unique narrow-gauge electric locomotives of PEU 1 series (IELNG1 – industrial narrow-gauge electric locomotive type 1) and PEU 2 (IELNG2 – industrial narrow-gauge electric locomotive type 2) to meet the needs of the Soviet mining industry in the complex mining and geological conditions of Central Asia with modern high-tech electric vehicles. The development of the research and production base of the machine-building enterprise is traced, the production nomenclature of which, originally represented exclusively by electric locomotives and traction units for industrial purposes, was expanded to the production of main traction rolling stock and special repair equipment. It was found that due to the economic crisis of the CIS countries in the first half of the 1990s, the rupture of economic ties of the former Soviet republics and the lack of need for such equipment on electrified access roads of narrow-gauge Ukrainian mining enterprises all work on designing promising projects and serial production of narrow-gauge electric locomotives at the Dnipropetrovsk Electric Locomotive Plant were stopped, and the Special Design and Technology Bureau of the enterprise, having received a state order, was reorganized into the Ukrainian Research Design Institute of Electric Locomotive Construction and focused on the development of main wide-gauge locomotive fleet of the railway network of Ukraine. Despite the fact that the Ukrainian Research Design Institute of Electric Locomotive has been liquidated and the Dnipropetrovsk plant is in decline, taking into account the historical experience of electric locomotive building in Ukraine is of fundamental importance in the general perspective of Ukrainian transport engineering and the domestic railway industry in particular. Further study of the history of Dnipropetrovsk Electric Locomotive Plant requires analysis of the historical circumstances of the institutionalization of the Special Design and Technology Bureau of the enterprise from the creation of shunting electric locomotives and traction units for industrial purposes to the development and re-equipment of main traction rolling stock and specialized repair equipment within the state enterprise «Ukrainian Research Design Institute of Electric Locomotive Engineering» under the leadership of Academician Victor Bratash.
