Resumen

Babel als Mythos des dichterischen Schaffens und der Sinnsuche steht im Zentrum der Huchelschen Überlegungen, eine Sprache zu finden, die eine neue Verbindung zur Welt und zugleich ihre eigene Genese problematisieren kann. Dabei wird die Preisgabe der Bindung an die Transzendenz, die früher jede Dichtung legitimierte sowohl im Lichte der babelschen Zerstörungen wie in der Versöhnung-Allegorie Pfingsten aufgegriffen. Die Ruinen Babels wirken wie die notwendige Bedingung für den Entwurf von etwas Neuem – sie sind dessen Fundament. Obwohl Pfingsten als Allegorie zur Kontinuität der Geschichte von Babel gehört, indem die zerbrochenen Ziegelsteine als Reste einer glorreichen Vergangenheit gesammelt werden, erfüllt der poetische Text seine der Versöhnung dienende Funktion einzig in der Diskontinuität, denn wer von Bruch spricht, meint auch Polysemie und Ambiguität. Deshalb erscheint die Lyrik nur noch im irisierenden Licht des Oxymoron und im Wechsel der Gegensätze. Gewiss eine Konstruktion, jedoch äußerst prekär.

Resumen

What interests us here is the fact that Babel as a figure of confusion became almost the self-named epithet of 17th-century England. All the participants of the debate that took place during the revolution or the postbellum associated Babel with the conceptual chaos of the civil war. The lively “pamphlet war” then brought a pluralistic forum for public opinion in which all the confused languages of politics were equal. When all could read the Bible, everyone could read the story of Babel in their own way. But nothing could reconcile those who read the divine right of kings in it with those who read the divine right of the people in it. In the 17th century, Babel was seen as a figure of discursive confusion, as the confusion was experienced in the form of fanatical languages of arguing sects. Liberalism, if the English-speaking world is acknowledged to be its cradle, constitutes an attempt to escape the impasse of the discursive Babel via the legalistic means of the state of law. According to Hobbes, the irreversible multitude of languages makes one ask what public order can reconcile nominalism in the sphere of political opinion with the social Diaspora of individuals released from the bonds of status or corporation. How to build a state while one Christian faith is disintegrating into many sects fighting each other? How to build a state in the chronic pluralism of the social world and multifaceted dissociation of the traditional community? This is why Babel as a figure of confusion provides the primary conceptual capacity for the liberal organization of the world.

The Babel File System is a dependable, scalable and flexible storage system. Among its main features the authors underline the availability of different types of data redundancy, a careful decoupling between data and metadata, a middleware that enforces metadata consistency, and its own load-balance and allocation procedure which adapts to the number and capacities of the supporting storage devices. It can be deployed over different hardware platforms, including commodity hardware. The authors' proposal has been designed to allow developers to settle a trade-off between price and performance, depending on their particular applications.

Resumen

ABSTRACT This article proposes a contemporary reading of the Tower of Babel story. The objective is to set the foundations of an ethic of communication that considers the notion of a global community formed by those who “speak the same language.” Our analysis is a trilateral hermeneutic exercise that places the story of the Tower of Babel in the contemporary context: the narrative of the Bible, according to Chouraqui’s very literal translation from the Hebrew text, the rabbinical exegesis of the Midrash, the Talmud of Babylon and the Zohar, and the imperative of responsibility according to Hans Jonas. Alongside to Jonas’s heuristic of fear, based on futuristic projections of catastrophic scenarios, we propose a heuristic of memory that sheds light to the ethics of exile as a key notion to accept imperfect and disruptive communication in a more compassionate and collaborative way.

En 1997, Iván Almeida, catedrático del Borges Center en Aarhus, escribe a Umberto Eco, haciéndole notar un aparente error en un reciente artículo suyo. Eco, copiando verbatim la traducción del emintente Lucentini, asevera que las galerías de la famosa Biblioteca de Babel, constan de «veinticinco estantes, a razón de cinco por lado, que cubren todos los lados menos uno», mientras que en la versión original, Borges asegura que «veinte estantes, a razón de cinco por lado, cubren todos los lados menos dos». Y eso no es todo. En la traducción de Lucentini se lee que cada uno de los volúmenes de la Biblioteca consta de cuarenta líneas y cada línea de cuarenta letras. Para Borges, sin embargo, el número de letras por línea es de ochenta. En este artículo se demuestra que dichos errores, aparentemente banales, encierran una revelación trascendente —quizás terrible— sobre el Universo.

Resumen

This article highlights the importance of the concepts of media literacy, and digital and informational literacy to understand the multimodal meaning of multiliteracies and their interfaces. An analogy with Babel is used to understand the different ways in which this concept articulates the linguistic, visual, audio, spatial, and gestural dimensions in digital culture. In this framework, the question of convergence is highlighted in learning experiences undertaken in formal and informal contexts. To qualify the meaning of this learning for the subject, the article mentions the concept of personal literacy to locate the importance of subjectivity in the interactions that the multiliteracies offer. Finally, in an exercise of representation of the components of the multiliteracies, the article presents a diagram that highlights the importance of mediation and the forms of appropriation that express concepts and experiences in search of a transformative pedagogical practice, as an opportunity to understand the multiliteracies as a condition of dialog, expression and participation in the culture.

Resumen

The biblical story of Babel has long served as a powerful image for translators in western civilization, stimulating much productive discourse about translation history, mythology, theory and practice. It is therefore interesting to note that the biblical story itself, despite its apparent antiquity and remarkable brevity, has been strongly influenced by even earlier sources stemming from societies antedating its ancient Israelite authors. This article examines some of the most interesting examples of cross-cultural and intertextual references from ancient proverbs and writings including well-known works such as the <i>Gilgamesh</i> epic and the Babylonian creation epic, <i>Enûma Eliš</i>. The delightfully subtle translingual wordplay in the name ‘Babel’ is also clarified. The biblical Tower of Babel reveals a startling complexity resulting from the wealth of intercultural and multilingual contacts that constitute the distant foundation of western tradition.
