Once more we can offer our readers some further titles of the Swahili- related research literature, some brand new in publication, others already out since years, yet still not yet put on record for the wider world of Swahilists. Our call for bibliographical references was hardly responded to by the readers of Swahili Forum VII and other possible contributors except for one scholar who much prefers to be `in consultation with` a certain other scholar. Therefore we once more would like to draw your attention to communicate your articles, books and other resources on Swahili studies to us so that the bibliographical section of the next Swahili Forum will be a treasure house again. Atiya koko wangue koma (Tiuow a fruit stone into the tree and you may bring down a doum-fruit). For the present issue we present all the titles which we happened to come across during one year of observation.

The editors ofSwahili Forum have decided to revive the former bibliographical service with issueing a first follow-up list within the present No. VII of Swahili Forum. The following titles do certainly not cover all the Swahili-related writings of the years since 1993, but could be seen as a new starter, which might create appetite to continue with a bibliographical section. Eventually this could be completed for the past seven years within the forthcoming issues. The following bibliography contains titles which were rather randomly collected by the present editors. The articles which appeared in Swahili Forum I/1994 - VI/1999 are excluded from this list but await documentation in an extra-list, which is forthcoming in one of the next numbers of Swahlli Forum.

Over the past few months, I have been assembling a bibliography on elder abuse that will soon be published on the Web site of the Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (www.onpea.org). I brought to this inquiry the tools I developed a decade ago during a sabbatical I spent developing subject-literature expertise in gerontology. That study was focussed exclusively on the print literature. Today, however, no bibliography would be complete without addressing the multifaceted nature of communication. Not only is there the traditional “hard copy” bibliography, there are videos, the Internet, and even the telephone. (Phone Busters, operated by the Ontario Provincial Police, does research on telemarketing scams and seniors.) I should emphasize this bibliography is not meant to be comprehensive, but a “brief bibliography” along the lines of the excellent series published by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.
Au cours des quelques derniers mois j’ai recueilli une bibliographie sur les mauvais traitements envers les personnes âgées qui sera publiée sous peu sur les site Web du Réseau ontarien de prévention des mauvais traitements à l'égard des personnes âgées (www.onpea.org). Dans cette investigation, j’ai utilisé les instruments que j’avais élaborés voilà dix ans pendant un congé sabbatique durant lequel j’ai acquis le savoir-faire relatif à la littérature-thématique en gérontologie. L’étude était exclusivement axée sur la littérature imprimée. Toutefoirs, aujourd’hui, aucune bibliographie ne serait complète sans aborder la nature diverse de la communication. À part la bibliographie traditionnelle « sur papier », il y a les vidéos, l’Internet et même le téléphone. (Phone Busters, géré par la Police provinciale de l’Ontario, fait des recherches sur le télémarketing frauduleux et les personnes âgées.) Je dois souligner que cette bibliographie n’est pas exhaustive, ce n’est qu’une «courte bibliographie » dans la tradition de l’excellente série publiée par la Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.

The Challenge: Today a daunting quantity of scholarship relating to Hamlet exists. While databases and electronic catalogues aid research, these directories present a virtual wall of minimal bibliographic data. Sorting through lists still takes eons. Meanwhile, new publications are constantly added to the academic stacks that ever threaten to tumble over. The Solution: A web site that groups together scholarly publications using similar approaches and treating similar subjects will translate the overwhelming into the maneuverable. The online medium will provide accessibility to everyone--student, research assistant, instructor, scholar--and will guarantee the opportunity to update this resource on a regular basis. Scope: Listings will span materials published between 1991and 2001. The bibliography will exclude notes, reviews, abstracts, and treatments of theatre and film performances as well as certain forums (e.g., newsletters, bulletins, electronic journals). Scholarship focusing on the Folio/Quartos debate seems relevant but requires specific and technical specialization and will thus be omitted. Pedagogical studies and comparisons of Hamlet to other literary works will also be excluded. Research: IAC Expanded Academic Index, 1982-1995, IAC Expanded Academic Index, 1996-, and MLA Bibliography databases, as well as Dr. Sara Deats?private bibliography on Hamlet, will be combed for applicable scholarship. Organization: The bibliography will categorize publications by theoretical approach (e.g., feminism, new historicism) and subject focus (e.g., characters, themes). It will arrange individual works alphabetically by author within each subsection, using the MLA format.

The Chinese oil industry was relatively unknown to most westerners, veiled behind the bamboo curtain, until the early 1990's when nationalized Chinese petroleum companies started selling off stock in their companies to international investors. In December of 2001 China joined the World Trade Organization. Since then there has been an explosion of investment in all areas of trade, and the petroleum markets are no exception. China's once hidden and largely undeveloped Petroleum Industry is probably now the fastest growing industry in the world. There are no "recent" book publications on the subject that are current and up to date and address China's completion of her first year in 2002 as a member of the World Trade Organization. Most current facts can be found in English printed Chinese newspapers, international oil companies annual performance documents and web sites, stock market listings, the US government and other sources. This paper will present an overview of some of the emerging statistics about the Chinese Petroleum industry, its companies and what implications these may have for the rest of the world.

The present alphabetical Bibliography ranging from `Abdalla` to `Zhukov` includes old and new titles on Swahili Literature, Linguistics, Culture and History. Swahili Studies or \'Swahilistics\' have grown strong since the mid-1980s when scholars started to increasingly engage in international networking, first by communicating through the newsletter Swahili Language and Society: Notes and News from Vienna (Nos. 1.1984-9.1992) and Antwerp (No. 10.1993) and then through the journal Swahili Forum published at the University of Cologne (Nos. I. 1994 - IX. 2002), not to mention the numerous conferences held in Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, London, Bayreuth and other places, and not to forget the achievements of the journal Kiswahili from Dar es Salaam as another steady medium of Swahili scholarship. Of course, this Bibliography is not the only one: other useful and specialized bibliographical information appeared in articles, surveys, reference books and larger studies, which are indicated in the following. Part of the titles have been extracted from these sources and integrated into the present Bibliography after having had a physical look at them. As this was not always possible, it seems still to be advisable and necessary to consult the indicated sources themselves when it comes to selecting one\'s base of research literature.

Resumen

This thesis is a case study of the Swedish American Bibliography (SWAM), a special subject database in the Swedish Royal Library’s library information system, LIBRIS. The research intentions are to explore and define the bibliography, and, by resolving issues concerning the responsibility for the bibliography, to fulfill the broader intention of clearing the way for its continuation. During the academic year 2006/2007 the qualitative methods of literature analysis, website analysis, email interviews and correspondence were used for investigating the bibliography. Results of research question one showed the SWAM bibliography’s beginnings and its basis in Swedish cultural heritage. Results of research question two showed the bibliography’s relationship to the Royal Library’s duties and instructions. Results of research question three showed the organization of knowledge in the bibliography’s scope, its digital structure and its accessibility. Results of research question four compared the bibliography to similar Nordic bibliographies. Results of research question five covered the Swedish and North American institutions collaborating on the project to keep the bibliography going and addressed the project member institution representatives’ ideas for the bibliography’s future. In addition to the bibliography material’s significance for Swedish cultural heritage, the conclusions revolved around the need for a combination of open communication channels among the member institutions, a sound financial base of operations and strong leadership and around the Royal Library’s ultimate head responsibility for the SWAM bibliography’s continuation.

The purpose of this thesis is to present a comprehensive colligation of applications of mobile agents in networks, and provide a baseline association of these systems. This work has been motivated by the fact that mobile agent systems have been deemed proficuous alternatives in system applications. Several mobile agent systems have been developed to provide scalable and cogent solutions in network-centric applications. This thesis examines some existing mobile agent systems in core networking areas, in particular, those of network and resource management, routing, and the provision of fault tolerance and security. The inherent features of these systems are discussed with respect to their specific functionalities. The applicability and efficacy of mobile agents are further considered in the specific areas mentioned above. Although an initial foray into a collation of this nature, the goal of this annotated bibliography is to provide a generic referential view of mobile agent systems in network applications.

One question that has often been asked is how many translations of the UDC exist? A lack of recent data is one obstacle to a full evaluation of the UDC's potential application in global information exchange. The question of translation has been raised by many stakeholders interested in the use of the classification. This paper reports on research undertaken in 2004 aimed at establishing the current number of UDC translations in different languages, their form/format and the date these were last reported. The research was completed in September 2004 and was based on relevant literature research, bibliographic surveys and e-mail interviews with cataloguing agencies and library schools world-wide. The objective of this report is to give an overview of translation activity over the past three decades providing additional background information where appropriate. A list of the last reported translations into 39 languages is given. The bibliography provided includes the most recent editions in many languages and a few references in languages for which there is only a single translation. This was included irrespective of the date for historical reasons. The survey was part of independent academic research at University College London. The hope is that this report will raise further discussion, resulting in more data that the UDC user community can share.

This document annotates 23 unaccompanied alto saxophone compositions, including original works and transcriptions. Selection of these pieces was based on the following criteria: (1) works which are commonly performed, (2) works by major composers, and (3) works which are important in terms of innovative performance techniques. Each annotation provides a synopsis of the composition, biographical information about the composer, pertinent information about the composition (dedication, duration, etc.), discussion about various performance considerations, a brief analysis, and concluding statements about the work including a qualitative assessment. Compositions annotated in the document include: Caprice en forme de valse by Paul Bonneau, Mai/ by Ryo Noda, Sonate by Jeanine Rueff, Suite Francais by Pierre Max Dubois, and the Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 by J. S. Bach arr. Londeix, and arr. Ricker (both editions are discussed). At the conclusion of the document, a bibliography of approximately 300 unaccompanied compositions for the alto saxophone (including commonly performed transcriptions) is listed, providing the title, composer, and publisher (if available).

Resumen

A few bibliographies of writings on the clarinet devote research to periodical articles. These bibliographies are now outdated and a concentrated effort has not been made to update periodical information since 1979. The purpose of this study was to compile, categorize and annotate selected periodical material relating to the clarinet and published in the United States from January 1, 1979 to December 31, 1990. This is the first comprehensive study devoted solely to the research of periodical literature relating to the clarinet.Citations from 1520 articles in fifty-seven music and non-music publications were organized by subject and author. The subject listing has five major subject headings and seventy-four subheadings. Major subject headings include "Soloists and Ensembles," "Competitions, Societies, Workshops," "Performance and Pedagogy," "Repertoire" and "Equipment." An article citation may appear under more than one subject or subheading. Over twelve-hundred citations are annotated.The type and number of articles in each of the major subject headings and subheadings revealed recent trends in clarinet research such as the preoccupation with clarinet personalities promoted in popular magazines. Foremost writers of the period were also identified, including Lee Gibson, Jerry Pierce, Norman Heim and F. Gerard Errante.

Throughout the history of band music, works by women have received little, if any, acclaim. While some of the reasons for this lack of acknowledgment are grounded in the historical development of the band and the social restrictions of the times, an even greater problem has been the lack of reference sources concerning band works composed by women. Likewise, the works themselves are frequently unpublished. This study compiles a dictionary of American women composers who have written for band during the period from 1865 to 1996 and a catalogue of these works.The introduction presents a brief analysis of the status of the woman composer and her relationship with the historical development of the band tradition. A guide to the use of the dictionary outlines the decisions that were made in the compilation and presentation of the material. The actual dictionary includes entries for more than two hundred women who have composed at least one original composition for band. Each composer is represented by a biographical sketch including education; list of awards, honors, and grants; reference citations; and a catalogue of known band works. The list of works presents as much information as possible including title, year of composition and/or publication, level of difficulty, duration, and availability. Beyond the biographical entries, the 572 compositions for band composed by women are listed in the appendixes in four different formats: alphabetized by title of composition, alphabetized by composer's last name, listed by level of difficulty, and listed by year of composition or publication.Works range in difficulty from those that are intended for use with a beginner band, to compositions that were commissioned by the professional service bands of the United States. It is no surprise that the majority of these works were composed post-1970. The study makes no attempt to evaluate the musical value of any of the cited works, but rather is intended as an initial reference on the subject. It also raises several questions concerning the place of these works in the marketplace and in relation to other creative fields.

This bibliometric study examined 19,385 citations in the bibliographies, book reviews, and reading lists of 70 volumes of Adult Education Quarterly, Adult Education, Adult Education Bulletin, Adult Education Journal, and Journal of Adult Education, and 13 volumes of the Handbook of Adult Education in the United States to identify books published before 1960 which have been frequently cited before and after 1960. Through citation analysis, an initial list of 434 titles was reduced to a core list of 64 books cited five times or more during the years between 1934 and 1988. For the purposes of this study, numbers of citations were taken to mean importance of works by indicating usefulness to subsequent authors. Of the 64 books, 55 had received at least one citation before 1960 and 57 had received at least one citation after 1960. While not all 64 of the core works constitute what might be called "classic works," it is suggested that classic works are likely to be found within the listed works.

Resumen

The purpose of my project is to provide a compilation of the work of Nicaraguan born poet, Salomon De la Selva, who incidentally was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1919, and was the first Latin-American poet to publish extensively in English. In order to achieve this goal, my research methods included the substantial use of the Internet, as well as two investigative trips to Mexico and one to Nicaragua, which ultimately led me to uncover a total of 135 unaccounted English-language poems. In addition, De la Selva's uniqueness lies in the fact that he was a truly bilingual writer, who was equally able to create both in English and Spanish, simultaneously. Therefore, my project not only represents an act of reclamation, but the new material also provides new exciting possibilities for his work by facilitating an intertextual analysis of his poems, which will aid in understanding the complexities of bilingualism.

Resumen

The rise in feminist consciousness and the growth of Women's Studies has brought Yiddish women writers into sharp focus. Kadye Molodowsky was one of the most prominent of the modern Yiddish women poets.
Her biography is a typical summary of the modernization of Eastern European Jewry in the early twentieth century.
Molodowsky was a leading figure in Yiddish cultural life in interbellum Poland. As a writer, her primary affiliation was with the Literarishe bleter (Literary Leaves, 1924--1939). This periodical, founded by prominent Yiddish intellectuals in Warsaw, became the world tribune of secular Yiddish culture. Molodowsky's association with this high-profile publication placed her at the centre of the vibrant Jewish literary, cultural, and social life of the time.
What follows, is an annotated bibliography of her publications and work about her in Literarishe bleter, from her debut there in 1925 until her departure for the US in 1935.

The study of folklore within Australia to date has been consistently hampered by the lack of any systematic and comprehensive subject bibliography available to researchers interested in the area. The present work provides a conceptual framework for folklore generally, and Australian folklore, specifically. The framework utilises contemporary scholarship and government policy formulations in the subject area. Based upon that framework, a comprehensive bibliographic listing of all folklore material published within Australia between the years 1790 and 1990 is provided comprising 1661 works. An account of the bibliographic problems pertinent to the subject area is provided together with an explanation of the causes of those problems. An historical summary and interpretation of the bibliography is presented in conjunction with an appraisal of the state of folklore research in Australia at the present time.

Resumen

There exists a need to explore the music of living composers--to acknowledge and advocate the merit of his or her own culture as evidenced in musical composition. Richard Bruce Faith is a living American composer who served a tenured position at The University of Arizona from 1961-1988, in the School of Music. The merit of Faith's music has been established through discussion of his compositions in professional music journals, bibliographical reviews, newspaper reviews, and graduate research documents. Many of his songs, piano works and orchestral compositions have been published. His operas have been and are continuing to be performed. Publication of Faith's compositions has historically been achieved after continuing discussion in professional journals and after regular performances have created a demand for his product. The choral works of Richard Faith are not published at this time. The choral compositions are an interesting and varied group. Their quality is consistent within the composer's compositional whole. Seventeen of the eighteen choral works were commissioned by or composed with a specific performing choir in mind. The suitability of these compositions for distinct types of choral forces is an obvious result of Faith's pre-defined compositional strictures. For instance, the four anthems for church choir are less demanding than the Three Songs for Male Chorus, which were written for a semi-professional community chorus. The compositional tools which define Faith's unique style also characterize the musical requirements necessary for a successful performance of the individual works. This measure of requisite musicianship is clear in the choral works. In fact, their origin as commissioned works and the intention of specific musicians to perform the works, determined how Faith would use his compositional tools. The search for new music suited to the abilities of singers and accompanists is an ongoing challenge for many choral conductors. Publication of Richard Faith's choral works would answer the need for new music among the great diversity of choirs. Publication of this interesting compositional body would also acknowledge a fine American composer.
