The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of water temperature and salinity on lipid nutrition of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr and smolt. Salmon parr were held at low water temperature (2°C) for six months while being fed feeds that differed in oil source (i.e. marine fish oil or vegetable oil blend) and concentration (low, 21% and high, 34%). In Chapter one I introduce the subject of geographic profiling, its use in criminology and its previous application to biology. I go on in Chapter two to examine the original model and develop a likelihood-based approach to fit the parameters to data from 53 UK invasive species. GP performs well on this novel problem, and outperforms other simple spatial modelling techniques. Using simulations I show that GP is particularly efficient at locating sources when there is more than a single source. The thesis is that contrary to the received popular wisdom, the combination of David Hume's sceptical enquiry and Charles Darwin's provision of an alternative theoretical framework to the then current paradigm of natural theology did not succeed in defeating the design argument. The study examined interpretational frameworks of six experienced biology teachers related to their roles in assessing students’ written answers to test questions. Data comprised in-depth interviews, sample tests, marking keys and student answers. Teachers’ interpretational frameworks depend on their expectations and are complex, three-dimensional, relational, predominantly visual and incorporate dynamic decision-making processes in forming judgments about students’ answers. Pedagogical Content assessment Knowledge (PCaK) is proposed as a major organising feature.
