Texto completoNitrogen has previously only been extracted from the atmosphere by naturally occurring nitrogen-fixing bacteria, but with the development of the Haber-Bosch process in the early 1900s it has been made possible to extract nitrogen from the atmosphere artificially. This has led to an imbalance in nitrogen’s natural cycle. Nitrogen has, since the process has been put in use, been extracted in large quantities for the use as a fertilizer in the agricultural industry and as a component of commonly used explosives. The nitrogen form used in these industries is nitrate, (NO3-), which acts as a nutrient to plants. As excess nitrate dissolves and spreads with water it can lead to eutrophication in lakes, seas and streams. A sea largely affected by this is the Baltic Sea. Biological treatment methods have long been used to purify water from various water-soluble nitrogen forms such as nitrate, nitrite, (NO2-), and ammonium, (NH4+). The biological purification methods are derived from the nitrogen cycle where they occur naturally and they include the processes of denitrification, nitrification and anammox. By creating conditions that benefit the various biological processes, they have effectively been used for removing nitrogen in both municipal wastewater treating plants and for drainage water from agriculture. The processes can be combined in different designs or used individually depending on the nitrogen form present in the water. Systems for purifying water from nitrate originating from explosives are a relatively new. This report describes the construction and follow-up of a passive denitrifying bioreactor used to purify water from nitrate derived from explosives. The bioreactor is the second of its kind in Sweden and in addition to these two there are no other bioreactors that treat water impacted by explosives in Sweden today. The report contains an evaluation of the bioreactors nitrate reduction and compares the method with other commonly used system designs and methods for nitrate purification. The comparison and evaluation has been made using a literature study and through chemical analyses. The chemical analyses include analysis of nitrate, ammonia, pH, alkalinity, temperature and electrical conductivity. Water samples have been collected during the start-up period of the bioreactor which includes the first 36 days from the day the bioreactor was put in operation, 2017-06-29 through 2017-08-02. During this time the bioreactor has demonstrated a nitrate- and ammonia production in combination with alkalinity consumption. The alkalinity consumption is most likely do to the degradation of the organic material and the nitrate production comes from a low C/N ratio in the woods used as source for carbon. Ammonia production is likely to derive from a combination of the alkalinity consumption and the C/N ratio in the woods. Because of these results, the results of the analysis have not been able to contribute to the evaluation of the bioreactor. However, the literature study shows that the denitrifying bioreactor is the most suitable purification system for nitrate purification, taking into consideration the environmental conditions and the waters chemical content. The study also shows that a number of changes in the design of the bioreactor could increase the bioreactors reliability.

Texto completoThe need for energy efficient and well-functioning water treatment systems is high, and grows as the growing population increases. Leachate is formed as water flows through landfilled waste. The problem of leachate treatment is that the reactors are located outdoors, which causes low temperatures during the winter months. As the leachate treatment is mainly carried out with biological purification techniques, the low temperatures cause a decrease in bacterial activity, which reduces the purification efficiency. Another problem that often arises in this type of water treatment is that the contaminated water consists of high nitrogen levels, while phosphorus levels are low. This gives an imbalance in the metabolism of the bacteria and can lead to limitations in purification efficiency. In this work, a newly developed bioreactor, which is tested at Djupdalen's waste facility, has been investigated. The bioreactor was put into operation in autumn 2015 and from April to December 2016. Measurement data from Djupdalen based on monthly water samples and chemical analyzes for 2014-2016 have been studied to find out the bioreactor's contribution to the purification efficiency of ammonium nitrogen. Water sampling was carried out in May 2017, where purification efficiency and active biofilm surface were calculated during the operation start of the bioreactor. Finally, experiments were performed where biofilms from Djupdalen were tested at 17-18 as well as 12-15 ° C with different levels of phosphorus supplementation, to investigate whether purification efficiency could be improved if phosphorus levels were increased. The results indicate that the bioreactor contributes to a significant improvement in the purification efficiency of the aeration reactor, but there is still an improvement potential. Several of the environmental factors in the aeration reactor cause less favorable conditions for bacterial growth, such as temperatures below 15 ˚C, severe phosphorus deficiency in the incoming leachate and slightly for basic pH values. Through water sampling and the accompanying chemical analysis it was found that temperatures above 15 ˚C in the leachate favor a faster development of the biofilm. Finally, laboratory experiments showed that phosphorus additions at temperatures of 12-15 ° C resulted in increased purification efficiency, while the result was unchanged for temperatures of 17-18 ° C at a water residence time at 24 hours. However, at a lower water residence time of 16 hours, the phosphorous supplement gave an effect for both temperatures. This indicates that a phosphorus supplement during the autumn of the aeration reactor, when the temperatures in the leachate go below 15 ˚C, should allow the bioreactor to improve its purification efficiency despite the sinking water temperature.

Texto completoA bioslurry reactor was built for the bioremediation of TNT contaminated waste from the demilitarization industry. The field test was conducted at Vingåkersverken in Vingåker, Sweden, to see if results from laboratory studies could be repeated in a full scale reactor. The goal of the project was to optimize the reactor to such a degree that it could be used to handle the waste produced at Vingåkersverken and also that this technique could be applied for remediation of contaminated soils. Unfortunately the samples taken during the full scale field test were destroyed by the shipping company and no analysis was possible. A later attempt by the Biorex research group has also been unsuccessful to reduce the amount of TNT using the bioreactor. How are we going to reach the results from the laboratory studies? The work continues.

Texto completoExamensarbetet har gjorts i samarbete med SP, Sveriges tekniska forskningsinstitut. De vill genom denna rapport börja få svar på frågan, om det är lönsamt att odla alger till biodieselframställning under svenska förhållanden, för att sedan möjligen påbörja en forskning inom området.
Rapporten granskar till en början, via informationssökning, vad som är gjort tidigare och vilka företag och forskare som arbetar inom området idag. Därefter undersöks de steg som algerna genomgår för att bli biodiesel, det vill säga odling, skördning, utvinnande av algolja och slutligen framställningen av biodiesel ifrån algoljan.
Olika alger, utrustningar och metoder studeras och ekonomiska siffror sammanställs vad gäller produktionen av alg-biodiesel. Slutligen undersöks vilket intresse området har hos olika svenska företag. Problemområden tillsammans med effektiviseringar diskuteras.
Resultatet är ett flödesschema över en önskemodell för svenska förhållanden. Flödesschemat innehåller de lösningar och metoder som förväntas ha stor potential, dock så fastslås det inte att det skulle vara den enda lösningen. Höjdpunkterna i denna modell är användandet av en mixotrof alg som odlas i slutna bioreaktorer. Algerna ska få en ökad tillförsel av koldioxid ifrån till exempel kraftvärmeverk tillsammans med glycerol, vilket gynnar tillväxten med möjligen upp till tretton gånger. Glycerol är en biprodukt vid biodieselframställning vilket därmed kommer att göra det till ett billigt näringsmedium vid mixotrof växt. Även värme är en restprodukt som tillförs algerna ifrån kraftverket. Denna metod kommer samtidigt fungera som koldioxidrening och kväveoxidrening för kraftvärmeverket.
Rapporten visar även på att övergött vatten, innehållande fosfor och kväve, kan renas med algerna och detta tillförs med fördel till de slutna bioreaktorerna.
Skördning av algerna görs genom flotation med löst syre eller genom att störa koldioxidflödet. Både syre och koldioxid kan tillföras ifrån andra steg i flödesschemat. Oljan extraheras fördelaktligen ifrån algerna med hjälp av produkten biodiesel och oljan omvandlas därefter till mer biodiesel genom transesterifiering med hjälp av mikrovågor.
Resultatet visar också att alg- biomassan kan användas till att framställa en rad olika restprodukter, där djurfoder, föda till tredje världen, bioplast och andra biobränslen är de mest intressanta.
Rapporten visar på ett stort intresse ifrån olika aktörer inom bland annat flygindustrin, kärnkraftverk, oljebolag och energibolag i Sverige.
