A two-stage survey method was applied for a sample of fifty-nine Brazilian Federal Universities, from 2013 to 2017. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was applied for the first stage in order to measure the efficiency of public expenditures. For the second stage, a truncated regression model was applied, with a double bootstrap procedure for bias correction and statistical significance test of the variables. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the causal links between public and private university environments and the entrepreneurial intention (EI) of students. Design/methodology/approach The impact of different university environments on the students’ EI was checked using a model adapted from Krueger et al. (2000). The study comprised a sample of students enrolled in business administration from three public and three private universities at first semester (freshmen) and at the last two semesters (senior) in Brazil. Purpose – The purpose of this study is to address its drastic socioeconomic inequality and to compel its higher education institutions to diversify significantly while democratizing access to those schools. Brazil recently passed a sweeping affirmative action law requiring its public universities to reserve half of their available spots for low-income and non-White students. This article examines the underlying assumptions and implications of Brazil’s adoption of affirmative-action quotas for higher education. The present study consists of a visual analysis of the official Enem advertising campaigns for 2019 and 2020. This highlights the unequivocal preponderance of white people in advertising representation and demonstrates subjectivities such as the recurrent association of black individuals with the stereotype of poverty and exceptionality. Based on these insights, the role of government advertising in the (de) construction of the image of Higher Education and Brazilian public universities is discussed, and attention is drawn to the possible use of public communication as a political and ideologi

ABSTRACT This paper looks into specific cases related to the authors’ personal reflections and experiences with internationalization. They are analyzed from a decolonial perspective, taking into account the specificities of Brazilian public education. The thematic categories of analysis were: (1) the social aim/function of higher education, (2) the impact of internationalization processes on higher education, and (3) the myth of a universal language/planetary unity. It is paramount, especially in times of emergency like ours, that we reflect on the formative, social and political role of unive

In 2012, Brazilian public universities were mandated to use affirmative action policies for candidates from racial and income minorities. We show that the policy makes the students’ affirmative action status a strategic choice and may reject high-achieving minority students while admitting low-achieving majority students. Empirical data shows evidence consistent with this type of unfairness in more than 49 percent of the programs. We propose a selection criterion and an incentive-compatible mechanism that, for a wider range of similar problems and the one in Brazil in particular, is fair and r

The estimated market value for vegetable seeds in Brazil, based on prices paid by producers, reached around R$ 300 million in 2007. Seeds from open-pollinated cultivars accounted for only 18 %. This data clearly indicates the changeover from open-pollinated to hybrid seeds in recent decades in the main varietal segments of the Brazilian vegetable market. This lecture will outline a historical retrospective of the pioneer activities of genetic improvement of vegetable crops targeting open-pollinated cultivars in breeding programs conducted by the public universities and research institutes and

This paper seeks to investigate whether Brazilian public policies to encourage public-private partnerships for patent development through the CT-Petro Sector Fund were effective. This fund was created with the objective of developing the Brazilian petrochemical industry after the breach of the Petrobras monopoly in the late 1990s. Until that time, this state company developed all research in this sector. The worldwide prestige of economists in the lay media lies significantly higher than scientists and academics from other fields of expertise. Brazil is not an exception as well. A point that calls attention to this fact is that the most prestigious international economists, who are frequently present in the lay media, are also distinguished in the academic environment. The lay prestige may be measured by their presence in the media and by surveys of public opinion, whereas academic prestige may be evaluated using database indicators of publications and citations of academic articles. The article’s main purpose is to investigate the learning systems of the two techniques for the benefit of the construction industry, as well as to evaluate their level of recognition. The principal results show that civil engineers graduates acquire little or no knowledge of both techniques, which may become a barrier to their professional evolution and especially to their involvement with publ
