Growers in north and central Texas produce peaches of exceptional size and quality yet have no information on the best maturity stage/storage regime for maximum shelf life. `Majestic' peaches were harvested at five maturity stages, corresponding to hard green through full red, soft ripeness. Intermittent warming and/or delayed warming reduces chilling injury in peaches and these treatments were used on hard green through firm red stages. Fruit were held 4 weeks at 5 °C, 85% RH continuously (control); 1 day at 20 °C followed by 4 weeks at 5 °C (DS); 4 weeks at 5 °C with 1 day warming at 20 °C every 2 weeks (IW). Chilling injury symptoms (internal browning) were noted on control and IW peaches after 2 weeks storage. We concluded that hard green peaches are too immature and red peaches at velvet and full soft stages are too soft (<20N flesh resistance) to ship. Chilling injury appeared in peaches after 2 weeks storage at 5 °C but could be avoided by delaying storage for 24 hours after harvest.

The postharvest life of blackberries is shortened by decay, leakage, and softness. Shelf life is shortened after periods of rainfall, and often fruit that appear firm in the field soften rapidly in storage. Blackberry selections of interest for advanced selections from plants without fungicide application are routinely screened for shelf life at Lane by storing fruit at 5 °C for seven days. Blackberry varieties are increasingly being used for farmer's markets, national, and international markets. A rapid test to gauge shelf life of blackberry varieties new to growers would be useful in determining the best type of marketing. Ripe blackberries were harvested from Clarksville, Ark., and transported in 260 g plastic clamshells on ice (about 5 °C) to Lane, Okla. Berries were weighed upon arrival and placed at 5 or at 20 °C for 7 and 2 days, respectively. Overall ratings were considerably worse at 20 °C compared to 5 °C, often with decay on all fruit in clamshells held at 20 °C. Separate subsamples of berries, placed individually in egg cartons and held over water at 20 °C (a 99% relative humidity) yielded Rhizopus, Collectotricum, and Botrytis cinerea growth after 24 hours. Because 2 days at 20 °C proved to cause decay in blackberries too quickly, fruit will be held for 1 day at 20 °C in the next season.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the regulatory-driven market structure on firm pricing behaviour by testing the structure-conduct-performance (S-C-P) hypothesis for both life and non-life insurance markets in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach – Using a panel data on 14 life and 22 non-life insurers from 2007 to 2011, the authors employed the Herfindahl Hirschman Index and concentration ratio as proxies for the S-C-P hypothesis while efficiency scores were estimated using the data envelopment analysis technique to proxy for the efficient structure (ES) hypothesis. The dependent variable, profitability was measured as return on assets while controlling for size, underwriting risk, leverage, GDP growth rate and inflation. The models were estimated using the panel corrected standard errors of Beck and Katz (1995) and random effects estimations. Findings – The results from the empirical estimation provide ample evidence in support for ES hypothesis for both life and non-life insurance markets. While conflicting results was found for SCP hypothesis in the non-life insurance market, it was rejected in the life insurance market. The findings also point to an increasing level of competition in both life and non-life insurance industry in Ghana though they still remain concentrated with the life insurance sector having high levels of efficiency compared to the non-life sector. Practical implications – The findings of the study will enhance the understanding of firm behaviour in the new markets created to shape regulatory and competition policies of the regulator to promote consumer welfare while ensuring a stable industry to enhance its role in economic development. Originality/value – This is the first study to test the market power and efficient hypotheses on the insurance industry in Ghana. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to examine the determinants of profitability in the non-life insurance market.

Fruit of 10 tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cultigens, including five typical fresh market F1's, two rin/ + F1's, two very firm (ultrafirm) inbreds, and an antisense PG F1, were harvested at mature green, breaker, and table ripe stages of development, passed over a grader and taken to a lab (21°C) for analyses of soluble solids, titratable acidity and firmness at the table ripe stage. Shelf life was also measured. Cultigens varied in response to both solids and acids at the three harvest stages, thus there was no clear effect of harvest stage on these variables. The rin /+ F1's and ultrafirm inbreds were significantly firmer than the other cultigens at the table ripe and breaker stages. Shelf life tended to decrease with maturity at harvest. One rin /+ F1 had the greatest shelf life at all harvest stages. Ultrafirm and antisense PG cultigens had greater shelf life than the other six cultigens at the table ripe stage.

Two tomato lines with normal maturation (NR-1 and NR-2) have been crossed with two mutant lines (NR-10 nor and NR-12 rin) with delayed maturation (shelf life). Determination of mutant genes has been done by ?2 test on 100 fruits from F2 generation. Fruits have been picked 65 days from antesis and kept for 60 days, when six evaluations have been done. Data have been collected every 10 days on parental lines and progeny F1 and F2 generation. Variance testing has been done on the basis of one- and two-factorial analysis and groups compared by contrasts. Fruits have been preserved in controlled conditions (in dark at 5?C). Tomato genotypes with nor or rin gene had desirable traits (delayed ripening, long shelf life and firm fruits) for modern selection, so they should be included in programmes aiming to create commercial F1 hybrids.

From a dynamic, life course perspective, this study examines the determinants of nonfarm self-employment for Japanese men from around the 1930s to 1975. Using work histories in a national mobility survey, the author studied the propensity of becoming self-employed at labor force entry and in later career. Results suggest that (a) father's self-employment is important; but (b) family-employed status does not enhance one's chances; and (c) historical, economic conditions affect propensity significantly at the moment of labor force entrance. Tiny-firm workers are more likely to move into self-employment. Industrial sector and employment duration also affect one's taking nonfarm self-employment as a career option.

Application of modified-atmosphere storage (MA) (high carbon dioxide and/or low oxygen) extends the shelf life of several fruits. This study was done to determine the effects of MA on quality and flavor of blackberries. `Navaho' and `Arapaho' blackberries were harvested in 1998 and 1999, precooled overnight at 2 °C, and placed in 0.5-L treatment jars. Treatments of 15% CO2/10% O2 or of air (0.03% CO2/21% O2) were applied at 2 °C for 3, 7, or 14 days. After treatment application, jars were held at 2 °C for an additional 11, 7, or 0 days, respectively. Seven and 14 days of application of CO2 reduced the incidence of decayed and leaky berries by 10% to 20% for both `Arapaho' and `Navaho', but firm berries decreased 10% after 14 days of treatment. Titratable acidity was slightly lower, and pH higher, in control fruit but soluble solids content was not affected by treatment. Anthocyanin content was not affected by treatment in `Arapaho' berries but was lower in `Navaho' berries after 7 and 14 days of treatment. Samples taken for taste tests after 3 and 7 days of treatment had no off-odors or off-flavors. `Arapaho' and `Navaho' blackberries benefitted from high CO2 storage, with a minimum of 7 days of treatment application needed to increase marketable berries by 10%.

Ethylene is integrally involved in the ripening of climacteric fruit. The ability to prevent ethylene action, or manipulate fruit sensitivity to ethylene, would provide a powerful means of extending postharvest storage life of these fruit, particularly for those that ripen rapidly and/or that are not tolerant of low-temperature storage. In this study, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), an inhibitor of ethylene action, was used to investigate ripening, respiration, and ethylene production in avocado fruit. `Monroe' avocados were treated with 1-MCP (Ethylbloc®) for 24 h at 20 °C. The fruit were subsequently stored at 13 or 20 °C. Some fruit were exposed to 100 ppm ethylene at 13 and 20 °C before or after MCP treatment. As evaluated by flesh firmness, respiration rate, and ethylene evolution, 1-MCP completely inhibited the ripening of avocado fruit stored at 13 and 20 °C and 85% relative humidity. Ethylene evolution and respiration rates were dramatically depressed, greater than 95% and 52%, respectively, by 1-MCP. Whereas firmness of control fruit decreased from over 100 N to 10 N in as few as 7 days, fruit treated with 1-MCP remained firm (>45 N) for periods of up to 3 weeks at 13 °C. Treatment of avocado fruit with 100 ppm ethylene at 20 °C for 12 h did not overcome the influence of MCP treatment. Similarly, treatment with ethylene before MCP exposure did not circumvent the effects of the cyclic olefin on ripening. Current studies are addressing the effects of MCP concentration and exposure time on avocado ripening.

Several cultivar/rootstock combinations were evaluated for overall performance in Mississippi. This study included postharvest fruit quality during storage as influenced by the various rootstocks. Parameters measured were fruit set, scion and stock trunk cross-sectional area, fire blight tolerance, fruit drop, and maturity indices such as fruit size, firmness, fresh fruit weight, soluble solids content, and juice pH. Cultivar/rootstock combinations were `Earligold'/EMLA 7, `Jonagold'/EMLA 111, `Improved Golden'/EMLA 7, `Improved Golden'/EMLA 111, `Scarlet Gala' /EMLA 7, `Jonafree'/Mark, `Macspur'/M 7A, `Royal Gala'/MM 111, and `Williams Pride'/M 7A. Cultivar and rootstock influenced fruit set. `Royal Gala', `Scarlet Gala', `Improved Golden', and `Earligold' showed maximum fruit set among the various cultivars. MM 111 and EMLA 7 rootstocks increased fruit set. Scion cultivars had the greatest trunk diameter on EMLA 111 and MM 111 and the smallest diameter on Mark. Scion cultivars on Mark and M 7A rootstocks showed less susceptibility to fire blight compared to MM 111 and EMLA 111. Cultivars on EMLA 7 showed moderate susceptibility to fire blight. Cultivars `Jonafree', `Williams Pride', `Macspur', and `Scarlet Gala' were least susceptible to fire blight compared to `Royal Gala'. The remaining cultivars were intermediate in susceptibility to fire blight. Fruit size, firmness, fresh fruit weight, soluble solids content, and juice pH were influenced by cultivar. `Jonagold' and `Williams Pride' produced the largest fruit, while `Jonafree' and `Macspur' yielded the smallest fruit. Total soluble solids were not influenced by cultivar and rootstock combinations. Sugar content of the juice increased as the apples matured and ranged from 12% to 14% among the cultivar/rootstock combinations. Firmness was influenced by cultivar but not rootstock. `Jonafree', `Macspur' had firm fruit, while fruit of `Scarlet Gala', `Williams Pride', and `Earligold' was not as firm. After harvest, the cultivars were stored at 2 °C for ≈4 months under controlled conditions and evaluated for soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, and firmness at monthly intervals. Overall, firmness, soluble solids content, and titratable acidity in all cultivars decreased with time in storage. `Improved Golden'/EMLA 7, `Royal Gala'/MM 111, and `Jonagold'/EMLA 111 maintained quality during storage, compared with the remaining cultivars/rootstock combinations, and had a longer storage life.

`Redcort Cortland' and `Redmax' and `Summerland McIntosh' apples (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) were treated with 900 nL·L-1 of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) for 24 hours at 20 °C before storage and were kept at 3 °C in either a controlled atmosphere (CA) of 2 kPa O2 and <2.5 kPa CO2 or in an air (RA) environment for up to 9 months. After 4.5 months, half of the fruit were treated with a second 900 nL·L-1 1-MCP application in air at 3 °C for 24 hours and then returned to RA or CA storage. At harvest and following removal at 3, 6, and 9 months and a 7-day shelf life at 20 °C, fruit firmness, titratable acidity (TA) and soluble solids content (SSC) were measured, while internal ethylene concentrations (IEC) in the apple core were quantified after 1 day at 20 °C. Upon storage removal and following a 21-day shelf life at 20 °C, disorder incidence was evaluated. 1-MCP-treated apples, particularly those held in CA-storage, were more firm and had lower IEC than untreated fruit. Higher TA levels were maintained with 1-MCP in all three strains from both storages, while SSC was not affected. Following the 6- and/or 9-month removals, 1-MCP suppressed superficial scald development in all strains and reduced core browning and senescent breakdown in RA-stored `Redmax' and `Summerland' and senescent breakdown in RA-stored `Redcort'. 1-MCP generally maintained the quality of `Cortland' and `McIntosh' fruit held in CA and RA environments (particularly the former) to a higher degree than untreated apples over the 9-month storage period. A second midstorage application of 1-MCP at 3 °C did not improve poststorage fruit quality above a single, prestorage treatment.

Four new F1 hybrids which incorporate the ripening inhibitor (rin) tomato mutation were compared with standard commercial tomato cultivars, including Flora-Dade, for the fresh market in New South Wales and Victoria. The rin gene, in the heterozygous condition, delayed the start of ripening by a few days, increased the interval between breaker and full ripe from 5 to 7 days compared with commercial cultivars, and increased the storage life of ripe fruits from 28 to 40 days at 20�C. There were no significant differences between the level of red colour developed by the rin hybrids and reference tomatoes; however, the rin hybrid fruits took 4 days longer to reach full red colour. The fruits of rin hybrid were as firm as the reference tomatoes when picked at breaker and stored at 20�C for 6 days. However, rin hybrid fruits were significantly (P<0.05) firmer than those of reference tomatoes when harvested at a full ripe stage. Of the 4 rin hybrids tested, HRAS 87-70, which showed the most promise, was released in February 1990 as 'Red Centre'.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate the fruit quality of 13 Asian pear cultivars grown in climatic conditions of central Poland. The following cultivars were tested: ‘Chojuro’, ‘Hayatama’, ‘Hosui’, ‘Kosui’, ‘Yuan Huang’, ‘Nijisseiki’, ‘Dżin Li’, ‘Er Shi Shinge’, ‘Er Jang Li’, ‘Golden 20th’, ‘Min Czi Li’, ‘San Li’, and ‘Shinseiki’. Pears were harvested in Experimental Orchard of Research Institute of Horticulture in Dąbrowice (near Skierniewice). Fruits were stored for 10 weeks at 0 °C in regular atmospheric conditions. Flesh firmness (FF), total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA) were measured at harvest and after the storage followed with 1 and 7 days of shelf life (SL) at 18 °C. After the storage, the sensory evaluation was also performed. Among the tested cultivars, ‘Min Czi Li’ and ‘San Li’ were the most firm (above 45 N) and ‘Kosui’ was the least firm (below 28 N) at harvest time. High amount of TSS (above 11% in both seasons and harvest dates) was observed in ‘Chojuro’, ‘Hayatama’, ‘Kosui’, ‘Yuan Huang’, and ‘Er Jang Li’ pears. Low TSS (not more than 10.6% at harvest) was observed in ‘Nijisseiki’, ‘Dżin Li’, and ‘Er Shi Shinge’ cultivars. The large differences among cultivars were observed in TA. High TA was observed in ‘Nijisseiki’ (above 0.32% in all terms of analyses) and low TA in ‘Hayatama’ and ‘Kosui’ (below 0.14%). All of the evaluated cultivars can be stored for 10 weeks at 0 °C in regular atmosphere without major negative impact on their quality characteristics. Fruits showed a slight (sometimes significant) decrease in FF after storage and a slight or no changes in TSS and TA. In sensory evaluations, ‘Chojuro’, ‘Hayatama’, ‘Hosui’, ‘Kosui’, ‘Yuan Huang’, ‘Er Jang Li’, ‘Er Shi Shinge’, and ‘Shinseiki’ (mostly cultivars characterized by high TSS) obtained highest scores for the overall quality (above 5.0 points in 10 points scale).

This paper develops and applies a simple graphical approach to portfolio selection that accounts for covariance between asset returns and an investor's labor income. Our graphical approach easily handles income shocks that are partly hedgable, multiple risky assets, many periods and life cycle considerations. We apply the approach to occupation-level components of individual income innovations estimated from repeated cross-sections of the current population survey. We characterize several properties of these innovations, including their covariance with aggregate equity returns, long-term bond returns, and returns on several other assets. Aggregate equity returns are uncorrelated with the occupation-level income innovations, but a portfolio formed on firm size is significantly correlated with income innovations for several occupations, and so are selected industry-level equity portfolios. An application of the theory to the empirical results shows (a) large predicted levels of risky asset holdings compared to observed levels, (b) considerable variation in optimal portfolio allocations over the life cycle, and (c) large departures from the two-fund separation principle.

The stony hard gene in peach is a recessive gene which increases fruit firmness and shelf-life. Five progenies segregating for the stony hard trait were scored for several ripening-related characteristics. Fruit from stony hard segregants produced little or no ethylene, had lower respiration rates, and tended to ripen later than `normal' fruit. Stony hard fruit also had a lower percentage red overcolor in three of the five progenies. Stony hard fruit, harvested when firm-ripe, maintained their firmness after five days storage at 20°C. Firmness of stony hard fruit decreased significantly if the fruit were sprayed with ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) at 250 ppm prior to storage. Fruit firmness of `normal' freestone or clingstone varieties was not significantly affected by the application of ethephon. The conversion of ethylene precursors to ethylene in stony hard fruit will also be discussed.

Summary: The article is dedicated to the history of medalic art of Russia since the time of its appearance at the boundary 17–18 cc. and its further developing as a definite kind of art in the course of the century. In 1701 a new Mint began its work in Moscow in Kadashev sloboda. For some period of time it was the main Mint issuing coins and medals. Among the engravers working there the first place belongs to Fedor Alekseev who was the leading medalist since 1701. Afterwards the leading initiative was given to foreign masters who had come to work for Russia. The first foreign medalists working on Russian services were Frenchman Solomon Gouin and Saxon G. Haupt. During the whole part of the first quarter of 18 c. Russian medalic works were signed by foreign craftsmen. The series of medals in memory of the North war performed by the German medalist Ph.G. Mueller and left a noticeable trace in the development of Russian medalic art. Medals of the first quarter of 18 c. reflected the successful events of Russia in the North war most fully but very few medals were devoted to the home life of the country. Medals of the first quarter of 18 c. served as the firm foundation for further development of the Russian medalic art. In 30–40s years the leading place at the Russian Mints was occupied by foreign medalists. Chief medalist was Dane Anton Shultz who was engaged not only in cutting dies but also taught Russian masters. The main service of I.G. Waechter rendered to the Russian medalic art consists in the further widening of artistic possibilities of medals. Virtuosity of ability to use technique, the accuracy in the gradation of the relief, fine feeling of light and shade allowed the artist to create such pictorial relief that is always connected with his name in the Russian medalic art. Together with the artists already spoken about, Russian masters work professionally too. The creative work of two medalists Tymophey Ivanov and Samoilo Yudin is very important. The circle of Russian medalists of 18 c. is completed by Karl Leberecht. By his creative work he realized the transition to a new period of medalic art – classicism. ABSTRACTHepatitis C virus (HCV) nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A) is essential for HCV genome replication and virion production and is involved in the regulation of multiple host signaling pathways. As a proline-rich protein, NS5A is capable of interacting with various host proteins containing Src homology 3 (SH3) domains. Previous studies have suggested that vinexin, a member of the sorbin homology (SoHo) adaptor family, might be a potential binding partner of NS5A by yeast two-hybrid screening. However, firm evidence for this interaction is lacking, and the significance of vinexin in the HCV life cycle remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that endogenously and exogenously expressed vinexin β coimmunoprecipitated with NS5A derived from different HCV genotypes. Two residues, tryptophan (W307) and tyrosine (Y325), in the third SH3 domain of vinexin β and conserved Pro-X-X-Pro-X-Arg motifs at the C terminus of NS5A were indispensable for the vinexin-NS5A interaction. Furthermore, downregulation of endogenous vinexin β significantly suppressed NS5A hyperphosphorylation and decreased HCV replication, which could be rescued by expressing a vinexin β short hairpin RNA-resistant mutant. We also found that vinexin β modulated the hyperphosphorylation of NS5A in a casein kinase 1α-dependent on manner. Taken together, our findings suggest that vinexin β modulates NS5A phosphorylation via its interaction with NS5A, thereby regulating HCV replication, implicating vinexin β in the viral life cycle.IMPORTANCEHepatitis C virus (HCV) nonstructural protein NS5A is a phosphoprotein, and its phosphorylation states are usually modulated by host kinases and other viral nonstructural elements. Additionally, cellular factors containing Src homology 3 (SH3) domains have been reported to interact with proline-rich regions of NS5A. However, it is unclear whether there are any relationships between NS5A phosphorylation and the NS5A-SH3 interaction, and little is known about the significance of this interaction in the HCV life cycle. In this work, we demonstrate that vinexin β modulates NS5A hyperphosphorylation through the NS5A-vinexin β interaction. Hyperphosphorylated NS5A induced by vinexin β is casein kinase 1α dependent and is also crucial for HCV propagation. Overall, our findings not only elucidate the relationships between NS5A phosphorylation and the NS5A-SH3 interaction but also shed new mechanistic insight onFlaviviridaeNS5A (NS5) phosphorylation. We believe that our results may afford the potential to offer an antiviral therapeutic strategy.

Modified atmosphere (MA) storage of blackberries may maintain quality and increase storage life, but there is limited information about how eastern thornless cultivars respond to MA's. Because there is also a growing interest in the health benefits of antioxidants in blackberries, it would be useful to know how those levels might change during MA storage. In 2002, the eastern thornless blackberry variety Chester was stored in MA; treatments included a control, or initial levels of 20% CO2 or 5% O2. Color, pH, firmness, fresh weight, soluble sugars, titratable acidity, total antioxidant capacity, and the levels of major classes of compounds with antioxidant activity of the fruit were measured at harvest, after 1 week of MA storage at 4 °C, and after 3 additional days at room temperature to simulate common industry practices and grocery display. Total antioxidant capacity was measured using the FRAP (ferric reducing/antioxidant power) assay, and total phenolics and anthocyanins were measured spectrophotometrically. In 2002, soluble sugar levels, fresh weight, titratable acidity, and all classes of antioxidants decreased from day 0 to day 7 to day 10 while the pH increased. Color values did not change. The only trait that differed among treatments was berry firmness; from day 0 to day 7 control fruit was the most firm, and those from the high CO2 treatment were the least firm. Studies were continued in 2003 with the addition of two more eastern thornless blackberry cultivars, Hull Thornless and Triple Crown, and these results will also be presented.

Promising white peach and nectarine selections, many with nonmelting flesh, from the Univ. of Arkansas breeding program were evaluated for fruit quality and flavor. About 20 kg of fruit, consisting of mature ripe and ripe stages, were harvested from 4- to 7-year-old trees in Arkansas and transported to Lane, Okla. Fruit were divided into two boxes per selection. One box was held at 5 °C for 8 days, then transferred to 20 °C for 4 days to induce chilling injury and was evaluated for storage quality. The other box was held at 20 °C for 4 days and fruit used for taste panels. Of the 14 nectarine and 12 white peach selections evaluated, one nectarine and four white peach selections had slight chilling injury. Flesh firmness of selections after storage ranged from 6 to 50 N. Taste panelist scores indicated that sweetness was associated with peach flavor in both nectarines and white peaches and that overall acceptability was dependent on sweetness, peach flavor, and low tartness. Ten of the white peach selections were equal to or better in overall acceptability compared to `Summer Pearl' and `Carolina Belle' cultivars included in the study. Panelists did not consider firm texture to be detrimental to overall acceptability. Results indicate that many of the breeding lines used in this study had fruit equal to or better than currently available cultivars in storage life, firmness, and sweetness.

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) ripening inhibitor (rin) mutation completely represses fruit ripening, as rin fruits fail to express ripening-associated genes and remain green and firm. Moreover, heterozygous rin fruits (rin/+) ripen normally but have extended shelf life, an important consideration for this perishable fruit crop; therefore, heterozygous rin has been widely used to breed varieties that produce red tomatoes with improved shelf life. We previously used CRISPR/Cas9 to produce novel alleles at the rin locus. The wild-type allele RIN encodes a MADS-box transcription factor and the novel allele, named as rinG2, generates an early stop codon, resulting in C-terminal truncation of the transcription factor. Like rin fruits, rinG2 fruits exhibit extended shelf life, but unlike rin fruits, which remain yellow-green even after long-term storage, rinG2 fruits turn orange due to ripening-associated carotenoid production. Here, to explore the potential of the rinG2 mutation for breeding, we characterized the effects of rinG2 in the heterozygous state (rinG2/+) compared to the effects of rin/+. The softening of rinG2/+ fruits was delayed compared to the wild type but to a lesser degree than rin/+ fruits. Lycopene and β-carotene levels in rinG2/+ fruits were similar to those of the wild type, whereas rin/+ fruits accumulated half the amount of β-carotene compared to the wild type. The rinG2/+ fruits produced lower levels of ethylene than wild-type and rin/+ fruits. Expression analysis revealed that in rinG2/+ fruits, the rinG2 mutation (like rin) partially inhibited the expression of ripening-associated genes. The small differences in the inhibitory effects of rinG2 vs. rin coincided with small differences in phenotypes, such as ethylene production, softening, and carotenoid accumulation. Therefore, rinG2 represents a promising genetic resource for developing tomato cultivars with extended shelf life.

Firmness of blackberries greatly determines shelf life for fresh market. Firmness in blackberries appears to be due to a combination of skin toughness and internal receptacle to permit large sample size measurements. Subjective rating of fruit require consistent evaluation by raters over harvest dates and years, and is subject to fatigue error. The FirmTech2 firmness tester was developed to provide rapid compression measurements and has been successfully used in determining the firmness of cherries and blueberries. Blackberries from a large number of clones ranging in firmness from rock-hard to squishy were measured with the FirmTech2 using a deformation range of 25 to 100 g. Additionally, blackberries were placed in storage at 2, 5, and 2/20 °C to monitor effects of storage temperature on blackberry firmness. Berries were subjectively rated and then placed on the Firmtech for measurements. A comparison of firmness readings for fruit only in the “1” (firm) category was made. Differences found among fruit readings agreed with observed differences in field subjective ratings. Stored fruit that had become soft and mushy could not be statistically differentiated from firmer fruit in quantitative readings. In conclusion, the Firmtech2 allowed rapid evaluation of breeding lines before storage.

Cantaloupes (Cucumis melo) in three separate trials were cut into 1-inch cubes and irradiated at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, or 1.5 kGy; 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, or 0.7 kGy; and 0, 0.3, 0.6, or 0.9 kGy, respectively. They were then stored in air at 3 °C for up to 20 days, and respiration rate, measured as carbon dioxide (CO2) production, microbiological counts [total plate count (TPC) and yeast and molds], texture, and color were measured during storage. Respiration rates were initially higher in irradiated cantaloupe. After 8 days, respiration was similar between irradiated and control fruit. Irradiation moderated increases in respiration in a dose-dependent manner. Highest irradiation doses resulted in initial TPC reductions of 1.5 log compared to the non-irradiated controls, and also prevented the 2.5 to 3 log TPC increases seen in controls after 10 to 11 days of storage. Texture differed on day 1, when controls were most firm, but irradiation maintained greater firmness than controls after day 7. Irradiation of fresh-cut cantaloupe has potential for shelf life extension and for integration with modified atmosphere packaging systems.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are a common condition in older men. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) powder in men at risk of prostate disease with LUTS, elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA), negative prostate biopsy and clinically confirmed chronic non-bacterial prostatitis. Forty-two participants received either 1500 mg of the dried powdered cranberries per d for 6 months (cranberry group;n21) or no cranberry treatment (control group;n21). Physical examination, International Prostate Symptom Score, quality of life (QoL), five-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), basic clinical chemistry parameters, haematology, Se, testosterone, PSA (free and total), C-reactive protein (CRP), antioxidant status, transrectal ultrasound prostate volume, urinary flow rate, ultrasound-estimated post-void residual urine volume at baseline, and at 3 and 6 months, and urineex vivoanti-adherence activity were determined in all subjects. In contrast to the control group, patients in the cranberry group had statistically significant improvement in International Prostate Symptom Score, QoL, urination parameters including voiding parameters (rate of urine flow, average flow, total volume and post-void residual urine volume), and lower total PSA level on day 180 of the study. There was no influence on blood testosterone or serum CRP levels. There was no statistically significant improvement in the control group. The results of the present trial are the first firm evidence that cranberries may ameliorate LUTS, independent of benign prostatic hyperplasia or C-reactive protein level.

IntroductionThe protein C anticoagulant pathway plays a critical role in the negative regulation of the blood clotting response. The pathway is triggered by thrombin, which allows the system to serve as an “on-demand” mechanism for limiting the coagulation response to injury. Specifically, the magnitude of the anticoagulant response is proportional to the level of thrombin generated.1 The clinical importance of the pathway is illustrated by the severe thrombotic complications associated with deficiencies of members of the pathway.2-4 The protein C pathway is initiated when thrombin binds to thrombomodulin (TM)5 (Fig. 1). The surface of the endothelium constitutes the main site for protein C activation. The thrombin-TM complex is a potent activator of protein C, but it has little or no ability to activate platelets or clot fibrinogen. Therefore, TM serves as a molecular switch for thrombin, including thrombin’s macromolecular specificity and physiological function. Protein C activation is enhanced when protein C binds to the endothelial cell protein C receptor (EPCR).6 Endothelial cell protein C receptor augments protein C activation by increasing the affinity of the thrombin-TM complex for protein C.6-8 Not all protein C activation complexes involve EPCR since the levels of this protein are low in the microcirculation.9 The thrombin-TM complex is rapidly inactivated by the protein C inhibitor10 and antithrombin11 (Fig. 1, bottom). Once activated protein C (APC) is formed, it proteolytically inactivates two critical blood clotting cofactors, factors Va and VIIIa,12,13 thereby limiting further thrombin formation. Activated protein C inactivates factor Va by cleaving at Arg506, which results in rapid but incomplete loss of activity, and Arg306.12 Cleavage at Arg306 results in complete inactivation of factor Va.Protein S serves as a cofactor for this process by increasing the affinity of APC for the membrane surface14-16 and by changing the specificity of the proteolytic cleavage of factor Va, which enhances cleavage at Arg306 without significantly modulating cleavage at Arg506.17 In addition, protein S blocks the ability of factor Xa to protect factor Va from inactivation by APC and has a similar function in the inactivation of the factor IXa-factor VIIIa complex.17 Furthermore, in combination with factor V, protein S enhances the ability of APC to inactivate factor VIII18,19 (Fig. 1, middle). Recently, there have been advances in understanding how protein S accomplishes these functions.Specifically, when protein S binds to APC, the distance from the active site of APC to the membrane surface is decreased about 1 nm.20 This decrease in distance is probably responsible for the ability of protein S to selectively increase the cleavage rate at Arg306. This conclusion is based on the observation that a protein C chimera has been prepared that, in the absence of protein S, has a distance between the membrane surface and its active site similar to that of the protein S-APC complex.21 With the chimera, protein S influences neither the distance to membrane surface nor the rate of cleavage of Arg306 in factor Va. Furthermore, the rate of cleavage at Arg306 for the chimera and the protein S-APC complex are almost identical.21 Unlike most serine proteases, APC is resistant to inhibition by plasma proteinase inhibitors and circulates with a half-life of approximately 15 minutes.22 The half-life is determined by inhibition with the following plasma protease inhibitors: α1-antitrypsin,23 protein C inhibitor,24 and α2-macroglobulin25 (Fig. 1, bottom). Each contributes to APC inhibition.The clinical importance of this pathway is evident by the life-threatening thrombotic complications observed in infants with complete deficiencies of protein S or protein C.2 In the case of total protein C deficiency, these thrombotic complications are most commonly manifested as microvascular thrombosis of the skin (purpura fulminans). These lesions can be prevented by infusion of protein C, but they reappear if the protein C levels in the patient are allowed to decrease to low levels. Heterozygous deficiencies of protein C and protein S are more common with the frequency of protein C deficiency, occurring in 1 in 300 individuals.3,4 Heterozygous deficiencies of protein C or protein S alone are modest risk factors for thrombosis. In combination with other risk factors, however, these deficiencies substantially increase thrombotic risk.3,4 The most common known risk factor for venous thrombosis, APC resistance, is also linked to the protein C pathway. Activated protein C normally inactivates factor Va by first cleaving at Arg506, followed by cleaving at Arg306.12,17,26 The most common basis for APC resistance is a dimorphism in factor V, which results in replacement of Arg506 with Gln. This substitution renders this bond resistant to cleavage by APC.27 This form of factor V is also termed factor V Leiden, because the molecular basis of the defect was identified in that city.28 As a result of the mutation, factor V Leiden inactivation requires cleavage at Arg306, which is a relatively slow process. Fortunately, as mentioned previously, protein S stimulates cleavage at Arg306.17 This observation may account for one of the reasons that protein S deficiency in combination with factor V Leiden results in a substantial increase in risk of thrombosis. Deficiencies in the protein C activation complex, most specifically TM, could also contribute to thrombotic risk. Recently, Öhlin et al identified mutations and polymorphisms in TM that appear to be associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction or venous thrombosis.29,30 Ireland et al31 identified alterations in the 5’ regulatory region of the TM gene in 5 of 104 patients with myocardial infarction. These mutations presumably reduce TM expression and contribute to the risk of myocardial infarction.31 Only 1 of 104 control, age matched individuals had any of these mutations. Mutations of TM also can lead to thrombosis in mice.32 Taken together, these observations provide a firm clinical basis to conclude that the members of this pathway are critical to adequate negative regulation of the blood clotting system.

The aim of our research was to study the influence of sowing seeds and seeding rates on photosynthetic activity and productivity agrophytocenoses forming hybrid rape. The study was conducted in 2009-2014. In the stationary field experiment at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine»Agronomic Research Station» and in the laboratory analytical research department of crop National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine.
During the studies used conventional methods for research in agronomy. The subject of research were hybrids of winter rapeseed firm Syngenta NKTechnikandNK Petrol. The technology used – is common to forest steppe zones except investigated elements. Predecessor – winter wheat. The rate of mineral fertilizers – N30P60K105 + N30 + N30.
The scheme of the experiment was supposed to study the following factors: Factor A – hybrids; Factor B – sowing; Factor C – seeding norms.
The highest leaf surface area of hybrids formed in period BBCH 62-65 in a variant of normal seeding 0,6 million germinated seeds per 1 ha and sowing 20-25 August.
The greatest weight of dry matter (13.23 t/ha) formed hybrid plants in NK Petrol variant of 20-25 August sow ing and seeding rate 0.6 milliongerminated seeds per 1 ha. Compared to the 25-30 August and sowing seed rate of 0.4 milliongerminated seeds per 1 hectare increase of 1.8 t/ha.
The highest seed yield an average of 5 years formed agrophytocenoses winter rapeseed sowing NK Petrol on 20-25 August and Calibration 0.6 milliongerminated seeds per1 hectare – 4.24 t/ha, which is more of a control option for the same period to 0.28 t/ha.

The main object of this paper is to shed light on the credence to truthful leader affecting commitment of followers. If exists the credence to a truthful leader might have side effects such as success in the life philosophy, radiation of happiness and commitment to organizations. The desired outcome should serve for all. The aim of this study is to measure the commitment level affected by credence to a truthful leader. To serve this aim a survey has been conducted throughout all the workers of the industry leading textile retail dealer firm of Turkey in 2016 which is believed to have a truthful leader. A multiple regression analysis had been executed to measure the relation from the predictors of credence to leader to the dimensions of commitment. It was assumed to be three kinds of commitment: affective, continuity, and normative. Credence to a truthful leader had affected commitments mostly by the predicting conditions of the leader: a. being honest and fair, b. creating a positive work environment, c. self-confidence, d. sharing information, e. delegation and heeding the followers, e. not creating tension, and f. trust worthiness. The results reported in the article were generally consistent with the prior studies. To conclude it is safe to say that solidarity can only be achieved through credence to a common dream. If the project to give life to that dream was well designed, it would be possible to have power to created corporate spill over’s. The study was one of the attempts to make happy both the organizations and individuals working within. Project managers are apt to be truthful leaders because they need commitment but have little fixed ideas to offer in return.

Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the importance of restorative justice by Indonesian National Police Investigators in traffic accidents resulting in death, as well as its implementation. The theoretical concepts used are implementation, restorative justice, law enforcement, criminal law policy, justice, traffic accidents, and Police Investigators.Qualitative research approach, type of socio-juridical research, focuses on the importance of restorative justice and its implementation by Indonesian National Police Investigators in traffic accidents resulting in death. Location of research is in Resort Police of Semarang. Data sources are primary, secondary and tertiary. Data collection techniques were conduct through documentation, observation, and interviews. Data validity was using triangulation technique, data analysis technique using interaction analysis model. The results of research on the importance of restorative justice and its implementation by Indonesian National Police Investigators in traffic accidents resulting in death are analyzed through philosophical, sociological and juridical point of view, while its implementation is analyzed by the implementation model of George C. Edward III which shows that restorative justice has not been understood optimally by Indonesian National Police investigators and the community even though in reality have been practiced in the duties or daily life. The obstacles, namely the absence of legal restorative justice umbrella is firm and clear, still weak understanding of Indonesian National Police Investigators and the public, especially the parties related to the settlement of criminal cases through restorative justice. Efforts to overcome these obstacles, Police Investigators in the settlement of criminal acts through restorative justice refers to the rules that are directly or indirectly relevant, organizing socialization about restorative justice within the Indonesian National Police, especially Indonesian National Police Investigators, and the public. Based on the description above, it can be concluded that the importance of restorative justice can be seen from philosophical, sociological and juridical point of view, whereas in its implementation is influenced by four factors, namely, communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure. Suggestion of clear and firm regulation related to settlement of criminal case through restorative justice, especially traffic accident and the need to increase understanding of restorative justice by Indonesian National Police personnel, especially Indonesian National Police Investigator and society in general.

Background: Hydroxyurea (HU) therapy in sickle cell anemia (SCA) improves health care utilization, slows organ failure, and prolongs life. Implementation of evidence-based, comprehensive care has been shown to improve health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Case management by community health workers (CHWs) is an evidence-based health management strategy. We therefore hypothesized that HU-eligible SCA adults exposed to patient navigators (PN), CHWs specially trained as case managers for SCA, would have improved HRQOL compared with controls. Methods: We enrolled 224 patients eligible for HU into the Start Healing in Patients with Hydroxyurea (SHIP-HU) Randomized Controlled Trial. All patients received care from trained physicians who implemented use of a standardized HU prescribing protocol using NIH guidelines. Pateints were randomized to either PN intervention (which included case management and education through home, telephone, and/or other visits from PNs) plus standard care by their treating physician (Experimental, E), or standard care by their physician alone (Control, C). Study physicians were blinded to study arm. At baseline, 6 and 12 months we assessed 4 psychosocial HRQOL variables-- ASCQ-Me emotional impact (EMOT), social impact (SOCI), PROMIS global mental (GMENT) and satisfaction with social roles (ROLE); 6 Physical HRQOL variables-- ASCQ-Me Sleep impact (SLEP) and Stiffness (STIFF), PROMIS global physical (GPHYS), Physical health (PHYS), Fatigue (FATG), and sleep/Wake disturbance (WAKE), and 4 pain HRQOL variables-- PROMIS pain behavior (PAINB), and ASCQ-ME-Pain crisis frequency (PAINF), Pain crisis severity (PAINS), and Pain impact (PAIN). Main analyses consisted of mixed model analysis of variance of follow-up visits, controlling for site and baseline value of outcome variable. Any missing baseline values for subjects were imputed. Results: 181 of 224 randomized patients had at least one HRQOL measure at follow-up. Patients had mean age 30.3, 45.3% were male, 81.2% were on HU at baseline. No HRQOL measures were different between groups E and C in any domain (Table, variables grouped by domain). Conclusions: In our sample, there were no differences in HRQOL among patients who were exposed to PNs vs those who weren't. These findings require further analyes before firm conclusions can be made about the isolated effect of PNs on HRQOL. PN dose of intervention was likely variable. HU use and adherence has been associated with higher HRQOL, and we did not predict high baseline HU uptake and adherence which may have led to minimal improvement despite adequate PN intervention. PNs were not allowed to work with MDs, nor did they work with the remainder of the health care team to improve HRQOL. Analyses are underway to examine these and other possible influences on HRQOL. SummaryIn consideration of the important role of inflammation in plaque progression and stability, recent work has focused on whether plasma markers of inflammation can non-invasively diagnose and predict coronary artery disease (CAD) and other forms of atherosclerotic disorders. Although several studies support an important pathogenic role of chemokines in atherogenesis and plaque destabilization, potentially representing attractive therapeutic targets in atherosclerotic disorders,this does not necessarily mean that chemokines are suitable parameters for risk prediction. In fact, the ability to reflect up-stream inflammatory activity, stable levels in individuals and high stability of the actual protein (e.g. long half-life and negligible circadian variation), are additional important criteria for an ideal biomarker in cardiovascular disease. Although plasma/serum levels of certain chemokines (e.g. interleukin 8 and monocyte chemoattractant protein- 1) have been shown to be predictive for future cardiac events in some studies, independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors and C-reactive protein,and although certain gene polymorphisms of chemokines/chemokine receptors (e.g. fractalkine receptor) have been shown to be predictive of future atherosclerotic disease, further prospective studies, including a larger number patients,are needed to make any firm conclusion. While the demonstrations of an association between chemokines and CAD are a necessary first step, such studies do not establish the full clinical utility of a biomarker, which is a more demanding process that requires validation in multiple cohorts, and clear demonstration of incremental prognostic value over traditional risk models. If successful, such new biomarker will be a useful indicator for better risk assessment,diagnosis,and prognosis, as well as monitoring pharmacological treatments for atherosclerosis.

Blueberry fruit were harvested at commercial maturity from variety trials and shipped overnight to UC Davis. Fruit quality was evaluated upon receipt and after 6 and 20 days of cold storage at 0.5 °C in air shelf life. Firmness, external color, soluble solids, and titratable acidity were measured. Sensory evaluations were conducted by trained tasters to rate the blueberries for crispness, mealiness, sweetness, tartness, blueberry flavor, and off-flavors at harvest and again after 21 days of storage. Many of the blueberries increased in firmness during cold storage. Firmness at harvest tended to be softer in `Santa Fe' and `Jewel' and firmer in `Star'. Sensory data also found `Sharpblue' and `Southmoon' to be more firm; however the objective measurements did not agree. Overall, `Saphire' was low in sugars and acids, and `Jewell' and `Star' were high in acids. `Misty' and `Sharpblue' were consistently high in sugars and acids. Overall objective fruit quality ratings were highest for `Misty', `Sharpblue', and `Southmoon', and lowest for `Santa Fe'. Blueberry flavor was rated highest in `Jewell', `Star', and `Sharpblue', and lowest in `Santa Fe', `Saphire', `Misty', and `Emerald'. These data indicate that blueberry flavor may be closely tied to acid content, as most of the high-flavor varieties had high acid and many of the low-flavor varieties had low acid. Over 3 years, the varieties consistently rated highest for overall objective quality were `Misty' and `Southmoon'. `Star' was rated high for overall quality in 2 years and moderate in 1. `Jewell', `Star', and `Sharpblue' were rated highest in flavor. `Santa Fe' was ranked low in flavor quality in 2 out of 3 years. Selection of variety appears to have a strong influence on the sensory quality of the blueberries marketed.

Great shifts ‐ genuine and radical transformation ‐ have been shaping the economy and business environment in recent decades. The world is going to be too tough and competitors too ingenious as companies are shaken loose from traditional ways of conducting business. Therefore, the old principles no longer work in the age of Globalization. Based on her research, Dr Radović Marković tried to make a profile of a successful organization which will be in the best way adopted to business environment in the new economy. Namely,in order to get a complete picture how the winning organization will look like in the future, the author concluded that the successful companies in the future will be the ones which are wise enough to harness the full potential of the entire organization in the rapidly changing business environment .It means that the winners will be the unbridled firms that are responsive to challenges and adroit in both creating opportunities and capturing them. In other words, to match the business environment that is more networked within and among companies, the ability to manufacture value will have to be distributed across the company to a much greater extent than in the past. Under these circumstances, managers need to transform themselves, too. They need to have a better framework for thinking about and understanding organizational change. Additionally, continuous learning is the key competency required by any organization that wants to survive and thrive in the newknowledge economy. Market champions keep asking learning questions, keep learning how to do things better, and keep spreading that knowledge throughout their organization. Knowledge organizations obtain competitive advantage from continuous learning, both individual and collective, concluded Dr.Radović Marković. The author also stresses that it is necessary to determine general personal knowledge and education, then to examine knowledge or various specializations in certain areas and lastly to identify their skills. Recent researches in the USA show that business owners who were not educated enough for the business in which they were engaged, were not successful (80 % of their businesses failed during the first year of their existence). On the opposite, those entrepreneurs who were educated and who showed constant interest in improving their activities have increased their business success by 60 % after the completion of the basic training programs for entrepreneurship and management. Therefore the author pointed out that more highly skilled workforce should be beneficial to organizations. Additionally, the human capital approach reflects the view that the market value of the firm increasingly depends on intangible rather than tangible resources. The three main components of human capital are described as a) early ability, b) qualifications and knowledge acquired through education and c) skills, competencies and expertise through on‐and off‐the‐job training. This would suggest that individual capability is enhanced by greater qualifications and higher skill levels. If this can be assessed and used in good effect in the firm then better human capital should, ceteris paribus, enhance organizational performance. Better organizational performance should, in turn, translate into better national performance. Finally, the author concluded that we should further recognize that we are living in the globalization era, or the Global Age. From the viewpoint of a product life cycle, we are in the introductory phase of globalization because we are in the early stages of the digital revolution that is creating the technologies that are enabling real time relationships among dispersed individuals and organizations. To meet constantly changing conditions and demands, business has to transcend boundaries to get what it needs regardless of where it exists—geographically, organizationally and functionally.

As for the results of his research are as follows: (1) In shaping the character of leadership of students, Islamic boarding schools have a purpose that is directed, as for the objectives are: a) students are able to form leadership characters in themselves; b) students are able to be confident in their abilities and potential; c) students are able to have a directed mindset in choosing their life goals; and d) students are able to build dynamic attitudes and behavior; (2) Care of students as an extension of the leadership of Islamic boarding schools and leaders in student activities for 24 hours, has been able to design strategies in shaping the character of student leadership with the following steps, direction; training; assignment; refraction; and escort; and (3) In addition to making steps in shaping the character of santri leadership, the nurturing of santri has also set benchmarks of success in the process of shaping the character of santri leadership, namely: testing with problems; test to make a choice; test to be ready to sacrifice; test to be firm in attitude; and test to evaluate yourself.Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan strategi pembentukan karakter kepemimpinan santri di pondok pesantren. The various published biographies and biographical notices of G.I. Gurdjieff (c.1865-1949) are of diverse style, quantity and content. While some have made considerable contributions to the subject, most attempts have reacted for or against Gurdjieff’s status as what might call an ‘Enlightened Master’. Little biographical writing on Gurdjieff has questioned the scope, reliability and prejudices of the sources. Further, possible resources have been neglected. The development in Gurdjieff’s ideas is often overlooked, his life is not sufficiently related to that development, and the lack of comparative research has failed to highlight Gurdjieff’s unique contributions. This article is structured in four parts. The first is an introduction, followed by an overview of existing biographical studies of Gurdjieff. The third part addresses bias in these studies, and this is followed by suggestions for future studies. It is concluded that fieldwork regarding the biography of Gurdjieff has been hampered by imperfect methodology. However, with better use of the source material, some of which has only recently been discovered, and a rigorous use of sources, a more balanced and nuanced picture of Gurdjieff’s life, and the development of his ideas and methods, should emerge.

Flavored edible film can be made from carrageenan with addition of spices such as sugar, salt, garlic, pepper, and nutmeg. Flavored edible film is an instant spice product innovation to reduce plastic packaging waste. This study aims to determine the effect of adding spices to flavor, solubility, shelf life, antibacterial activity, and fungus growth on edible film. Sensory analysis was to determine the most preferred formulation. Solubility analysis used solution at 75°C and 100°C with oil and without oil. Shelf life analysis used the Accelerared Shelf-Life Testing method at 25°C, 35°C, and 40°C at 75% RH. Antibacterial activity used paper disc diffusion method with Bacillus cereus and Salmonella. Analysis of fungus growth was done with incubation for 24 hours. Flavored edible film consisting of 4 grams of sugar, 4 grams of salt, 1 grams of garlic, 0.2 grams of pepper and 0.2 grams of nutmeg has the highest score of taste and aroma attribute score of 2.20 ± 0.45. Flavored edible film had a significant difference solubility in oil treatment and no significant difference in temperature treatment. Flavored edible film had a shelf life 17 days. Flavored edible film could not inhibit bacterial activity. There was no fungal growth on flavored edible film.

Background: Grape juice has a high antioxidant potential, capable of fighting oxidative processes in the body. The juice is mainly marketed in its concentrated form, which has a high content of glucose and fructose. The juice concentrate may then be used as an osmotic agent to dehydrated fruit with a relatively short shelf-life at room temperature, such as melon. The osmotic dehydration process can also be combined with conventional drying in order to further reduce the water activity (aw) of the product. Finally, the antioxidant-rich melon meets the consumers’ demand for foods which contain ingredients that may impart health benefits. Results: Melon dehydrated by osmotic process at 200, 400 and 600 mbar, using grape juice concentrate (GJC), showed no significant differences in physical characteristics (aw, °Brix, and moisture content). Higher efficiency was observed when dehydration was performed at 200 mbar. After osmotic dehydration with GJC, both plasmolysis of the melon cells and an increase in intercellular spaces were observed by optical microscopy, with no negative impact on the mechanical properties (True stress, Hencky’s strain and deformability modulus). Calcium present in GJC was impregnated into the melon matrix, thus contributing with the mineral composition and mechanical properties of the final product. No significant differences were observed for the antioxidant capacity of melon dehydrated both with GJC and GJC followed by air-drying at 50 and 70°C. This demonstrates that it is possible to combine the two processes to obtain a product with intermediate moisture without decreasing its antioxidant capacity. The samples scored above the acceptable limit (>5) varying between like slightly to like moderately, resulting in a purchase intent with average scores between 3 (maybe/maybe not buy) and 4 (probably would buy).Conclusions: A product with intermediate water activity, acidic, firm, high antioxidant capacity, rich in calcium and in naturally occurring sugars, and potential sensory acceptance can be obtained using grape juice concentrate in the osmotic dehydration process, followed by air-drying process.Keywords: osmotic dehydration, air-drying, fruit juice, optical microscopy, antioxidants, calcium.

This article employs Boden's (2004) understanding that creativity can be defined in terms of both ‘big C creativity’ associated with high culture and ‘small c creativity’ concerned with constructive, life-affirming strategies in its comparative study of the films Quartet (2012) and Youth (2015) focusing on their representations of ageing artists and musicians and the ways in which each film suggests that life experience informs artistic endeavour and vice versa. With each film based on varying scenarios of late-life ‘big C creativity’, the article explores the contrasts with ‘small c creativity’ that are suggested in storylines. The article argues that to varying degrees and with different ideological implications each film points to the importance of relationality and embodiment in late-life creativity.

The effects of harvest-applied coating and shrink-wrap polymeric film treatments of apples [Malus ×domestica Borkh. `Gala' and Mansf. `Golden Delicious'] on volatile levels, quality attributes, respiration, and internal atmospheres after storage at 0 °C for 1 to 6 months, and during subsequent shelf life at 20 °C were investigated. Over 30 volatiles were detected, most of the identified volatiles were esters, the rest were alcohols, aldehydes, a ketone and a sesquiterpene. Shellac- and wax-based fruit coatings transiently inhibited total volatile levels in `Golden Delicious' while not affecting those in `Gala' apples during 6 months of storage in air at 0 °C. Holding fruit at 20 °C for up to three weeks following cold storage increased volatile levels with coated and nontreated fruit having similar amounts. Only shellac-coated `Golden Delicious' apples accumulated ethanol and ethyl acetate when held at 20 °C. The shrink-wrap polymeric film treatment had no effect on fruit volatile levels during cold storage or during subsequent shelf life at 20 °C. Coating but not film treatments reduced respiration and ethylene production rates that were observed upon transferring the fruit to 20 °C. Internal CO2 and ethylene levels increased and O2 levels decreased in coated fruit. The coating treatments led to better retention of flesh firmness in `Golden Delicious' but not `Gala' apples. Coating and film treatments reduced fresh weight loss in both cultivars during cold storage. The results suggest that harvest-applied coating and film treatments having relatively high permeability for CO2 and O2 and relatively low permeability for water vapor and fruit volatiles have potential for improving the storage and shelf-life qualities of `Gala' and `Golden Delicious' apples.

The pork loin cuts were “commercially” or “aseptically” prepared. Gas atmosphere of the packages, microbial load, and pH were monitored throughout storage. The principal factor influencing change in the headspace gases under the conditions of these studies was gas transmission through the packaging film. A 100-fold difference in initial microbial load between commercially and aseptically prepared meat cuts resulted in a 2-week difference in storage life at both −1 and 4.4°C. Spoilage at each of the three storage temperatures could be attributed to the growth of different groups of bacteria and was influenced by package type. At −1°C, Brochothrix thermosphacta was the predominating microflora of samples stored in plastic film with an OTR of 26.5; lactic acid bacteria predominated on samples stored in foil packs with 0.0 and 12.6 OTR. At 4.4°C, lactic acid bacteria predominated, and at 10°C, Enterobacteriaceae predominated, regardless of packaging film. Under commercial packaging conditions in foil laminate packages with 0.0 or 12.6 OTR, storage life of pork cuts was 5 or 8 weeks at 4.4 or −1°C, respectively. This result was not definitive because of a difference among replicates. Samples in replicate 2 had a reduced storage life at each of the three storage temperatures.

Barry Cross was born at Coulsden, Surrey, the second son of Hubert and Elsie Cross (nee Richards). Hubert Cross was a life assurance cashier with Scottish Provident in the City of London. In the First World War he served with the Honorable Artillery Company in Palestine as ‘a private and proud of it’. Untroubled by career ambitions he was content with a routine job, family life, and playing rugby at county level. His sons remembered him as kind, firm and a little distant, while their mother was more indulgent and the provider of puddings. With the possible exception of Penuel Cross, a paternal great–grandfather, who was a bass chorister and lay vicar at Winchester Cathedral for 43 years, there was little trace of a creative or scholarly impulse on either Barry's father's or mother's side. Yet Barry and his younger brother John (who became Professor of Politics at University College Cardiff) had academic ambitions and well thought–out career goals from an early age. There are three types thin film thermocouples (TFTCs) fabricated on the nickel-based superalloy substrates, including type-K (Ni-10%Cr/Ni-3%Si), type-S (Pt-10%Rh/Pt) and indium tin oxide (ITO) versus platinum (Pt) TFTCs. All of the samples were calibrated and cycled in tube furnace. The Seebeck coefficient of type-K, type-S and ITO/Pt TFTCs is 36.53 μV/°C, 8.89 μV/°C and 81.67 μV/°C, respectively. The life time of type-K and type-S TFTCs is 3 calibrating cycles (about 25 h) and 2 calibrating cycles (about 20 h), respectively. The ITO/Pt TFTCs shows longer life time that is longer than 5 cycles (about 50 h).

Volvariella volvacea is an edible mushroom, highly perishable and has a very short shelf life (1-2 days) at room temperature (RT). This research was conducted to determine the postharvest qualities at different storage temperatures (10, 15ºC, and RT) and storage durations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 days) in perforated polyethylene (PE) films. V. volvacea stored at 15°C showed lower weight loss, no veil opening and retained higher firmness. Thus, the mushrooms were expanded to examine the optimum packaging systems (perforation, PVC film wrap, vacuum and control) applied to V. volvacea for 0-8 d at 15ºC. PVC film was shown to maintain higher firmness, lower weight loss, browning degree, and PPO enzyme activity compared to other packaging. Minor damages and ultrastructure tissue shrivelling were seen in PVC film packaging. Overall, V. volvacea was best stored at 15°C in PVC film to retain their quality and extend its shelf life.

This research aimed to obtain a C-based coating electrochemically applied on an AA6063 alloy. Two electrochemical cells were designed and manufactured to obtain the C-based coating film on flat and cylindrical samples. Structural and microstructural characterizations were performed along with fatigue and corrosion performance testing. The structural and microstructural characterization revealed that the C-based coating deposited on AA6063 corresponded to carbon nanofibers and/or polycrystalline graphite. The performance testing showed an increase in fatigue life along with a decrease in corrosion resistance. The fracture surfaces of the fatigued samples were inspected by Scanning Electron Microscopy and 3D optical microscopy to correlate them with fatigue life estimation. The aforementioned process is a step towards the future development of a complete coating system that will overcome corrosion susceptibility. The carbon film obtained by this electrochemical route has not previously been reported elsewhere.

This study investigated the use of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to extend the shelf life of soy bread with and without calcium propionate as a chemical preservative. The bread samples were packaged in pouches made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as the control (film 1), high-barrier laminated linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)–nylon–ethylene vinyl alcohol–nylon–LLDPE (film 2), and medium-barrier laminated LLDPE–nylon–LLDPE (film 3). The headspace gases used were atmosphere (air) as control, 50% CO2–50% N2, or 20% CO2–80% N2. The shelf life was determined by monitoring mold and yeast (M+Y) and aerobic plate counts (APC) in soy bread samples stored at 21°C ± 3°C and 38% ± 2% relative humidity. At 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 days of storage, soy bread samples were removed, and the M+Y and APC were determined. The preservative, the films, and the headspace gases had significant effects on both the M+Y counts and the APC of soy bread samples. The combination of film 2 in the 50% CO2–50% N2 or 20% CO2–80% N2 headspace gases without calcium propionate as the preservative inhibited the M+Y growth by 6 days and the APC by 4 days. It was thus concluded that MAP using film 2 with either the 50% CO2–50% N2 or 20% CO2–80% N2 was the best combination for shelf-life extension of the soy bread without the need for a chemical preservative. These MAP treatments extended the shelf life by at least 200%.

Starch of lesser yam (‘gembili’ in Indonesian) has been used as a base for edible film and coating. Potassium sorbate and cinnamon oil are known as strong antimicrobial agents. This research was aimed to investigate the physical and mechanical characteristics of edible film from lesser yam starch-plasticizer formulations added with potassium (K) sorbate or cinnamon oil and its application as coating to strawberries. Incorporation of either K-sorbate or cinnamon oil at higher concentration resulted in reduced tensile strength and elongation with higher water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The selected edible film formulations were applied as coating on strawberry stored at two conditions: room (28-30°C) and refrigeration temperature (5-6°C). At room temperature, controls had shelf life only for 2 and 4 days and strawberries coated with addition of K-sorbate lasted for 5-6 days, and those with addition of cinnamon oil prolonged for 5-11 days. At refrigeration storage, shelf life of controls was 9 and 18 days whereas K-sorbate-added formulations further prolonged shelf life of strawberries for 19-21 days, and those added with cinnamon oil lasted for 25-26 days. Therefore, all coated, stored strawberries had longer shelf life and more retained strawberries’ quality including lower weight loss, higher hardness, and lower microbial count.

Today, in Ukraine, fire-fighting and rescue units in the event of fires and emergencies of a natural and anthropo-genic nature are often forced to operate emergency life-saving tools and equipment that are partially worn or outdated. It is extremely costly to completely replace the equipment of all fire and rescue units. Therefore, the development of methods for the restoration of worn or partially worn parts of fire and rescue equipment, as well as increasing their service life and interrepair interval, is an urgent task for today.The proposed work is devoted to the application of eutectic coatings based on the Fe-Mn-C-B-Si alloy Cr system for the restoration of partially wornout steel parts of firefighting equipment and rescue equipment, as well as to increase the service life (lifetime) of these parts. The essence of the experimental study was to compare the wear of the cutting elements of hydraulic emergency rescue scissors "Hydrum H-32" series production and scissors with a protective eutectic coating. The work life of the eutectic coatings of Fe-Mn-C-B-Si doped Cr working bodies of emergency rescue scissors in 1.8 times greater than that of working bodies of serial production, so it is advisable to repair such worn parts of the rescue and fire tool. Due to the relatively low cost of eutectic alloys based on iron, this method is economically viable as an alternative to replacing parts with new ones. This type of coating can also be applied to other steel parts of fire-fighting and rescue equipment to restore worn parts and increase service life and overhaul intervals. The use of durable eutectic iron based coatings is economically feasible given their relatively low cost.

AbstractIn this study, ‘Rabbab’ pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) were subjected before storage to single-layered wax coating (SLW), double-layered wax coating (DLW), individual-seal film packaging (ISP), tray wrap film packaging (TWP), and combined treatments of SLW + ISP or SLW + TWP. Treated fruits were then stored at ambient temperature (15–20 °C; 45–50% relative humidity – RH) or in cold conditions (5 °C ± 0.5; 85% RH) for 18 weeks. TWP, ISP, DLW, and SLW extended the shelf life of pomegranates for 18, 18, 12, and 11 weeks at cold (5 °C) condition, and also for 6, 5, 3, and 3 weeks at ambient condition, respectively, whereas the shelf life of control fruits were 10 and 2 weeks at cold and ambient conditions, respectively. After 18 weeks of storage, the weight loss in ISP and TWP fruits was 0.6 and 0.4% at cold condition and 12.4 and 5.4% at ambient condition, respectively. In general, film packaging maintained vitamin C, total titratable acidity, and sensory analysis scores for color, freshness, juiciness, and taste of pomegranates more effectively than wax coating and control. However, the combination of SLW and ISP or TWP did not improve the efficiency of pomegranates packaged as either ISP or TWP.

Lthium difluoro (sulfato) borate (LiBF2SO4) is a prospecting salt for electrolyte of lithium-ion batteries. The effect of LiBF2SO4 salt on conductivity, charge-discharge capacities, temperature performance, cycling life and storage life at 60 °C is investigated. In graphite half cells at 60 °C, LiBF2SO4-ethylene carbonate (EC)/ dimethyl carbonate (DMC) electrolyte favourably facilitates the formation of a thermal stable, effective and conductive interface film on the surface of carbonaceous anode. Besides, in LiCoO2 half cells at 60 °C, the electrolyte containing the novel salt exerts several advantages, such as stable cycling performance, and good capacity retention performance.
