Resumen
The seed bank is one of the strategies for the preservation of endangered species, such as Caesalpinia echinata Lam. In this work we studied the changes in O2 consumption and CO2 release by seeds incubated at different temperatures and water contents, evaluating the deterioration of seeds through germination and tetrazolium tests. Our results demonstrated that the deterioration processes occurring in C. echinata seeds are related to respiration and possibly other oxidative processes, causing the death of embryonic tissues in short periods and loss of seed viability. The present work describes changes during the maturation process of seeds of Caesalpinia echinata Lam. Individual flowers were tagged in the day of their anthesis and the pods were collected directly from the branches from 32 to 65 days after flowering (DAF). Results obtained suggested that physiological maturity of C. echinata seeds occurred ca. 60-65 DAF, immediately before shedding, when seeds had 30-40% water content.

Seed storage at room temperature is an important and low-cost tool for ex situ conservation. However, the high rates of seed deterioration could reduce the potential for storage in this condition. Therefore, the knowledge of the suitable water content for this type of storage plays a critical role. This study aimed to assess the time required to stabilize the relative humidity (RH) in sealed flasks with saturated salt solutions, with or without the introduction of seeds of Caesalpinia echinata, as well as to assess the viability of these seeds stored in environments with different hygroscopic

Leaching kinetics during seed imbibition is a function of physiological quality, presence or absence of seed coat, imbibing temperature and the initial moisture content of seed. Abstract: Seed storage is an important tool for ex situ conservation. Orthodox seeds can be stored for long periods, but recalcitrant seeds generally only for short periods. There is wide variation in the degree of desiccation tolerance between orthodox and recalcitrant seeds, leading authors to suggest levels of recalcitrance and, more recently, that there are variations in the stage of maturity at seed dispersal. Thus, recalcitrant behavior would be a result of premature dispersal from the mother plant. In this study, we sought to establish physiological relationships between different stage

Caesalpinia echinata Lam.

ABSTRACT Caesalpinia echinata Lam. an endangered species, occurs in forest fragments of the Cabo Frio region, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data from four sub-populations were used to describe local population patterns and one-year dynamics. In each subpopulation, 0.1 ha-plots were set up and all C. echinata trees were mapped, and diameter and height were measured. The fragments sampled had different sizes and were subjected to various degrees of man-made disturbance, representing a succession gradient from an earlier (small fragment) to a later stage (large fragment). We compared the sub-populat

ABSTRACT Seeking to expand the floristic studies for the Atlantic rainforest, we herein present, based on field trips (January 2011 to April 2013) and herbarium records, a list of vascular plants found in the Mata do Junco Wildlife Refuge, State of Sergipe, Northeastern Brazil. We registered a total of 380 species, 244 genera and 80 families, with 45 new occurrences for the Atlantic rainforest of the State of Sergipe. The most representative families were Fabaceae (36 species), Cyperaceae (29) and Poaceae (28). Herbs were the most representative regarding habit (167 species or 44%). We found t

The fugitive nature of the colorants obtained from sappanwood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) or the South American species commonly known as ‘brazilwoods’ (including other Caesalpinia species and Paubrasilia echinata (Lam.)) makes the identification of brazilwood dyes and pigments in historic artefacts analytically challenging. This difficulty has been somewhat alleviated recently by the recognition and structural elucidation of a relatively stable marker component found in certain brazilwood dyes and pigments—the benzochromenone metabolite urolithin C. This new understanding creates an ideal opportu
