AbstractThis article examines the transplantation of America's ‘manly’ civilization to 1920s Fujian, China, through the experiences of Harry R. Caldwell (1876–1970), a Methodist missionary whose hunting was central to his social evangelism. With his rifle, Caldwell protected Chinese villagers from man-eating tigers, taught them how to hunt tigers effectively, and enabled them to reconceptualize their relationships with tigers and nature. By engaging the American Museum of Natural History in his specimen collection and hunt for the mythical ‘Blue Tiger’, Caldwell introduced an economy of natural expeditions to the villagers who were hired to support the hunt. This article argues that Caldwell's experiences as both a missionary and a hunter in Fujian was an extension, or negotiation, of his rugged masculinity, which was fostered in his Tennessee home town. He identified as both a Christian and a hunter, and he did not see these parts of himself as distinct. A comparison between Caldwell and his contemporary, the British naturalist Arthur de Carle Sowerby (1885–1954), accentuates America's rugged masculinity by suggesting different national approaches to hunting and the growing professionalization of the naturalist.

Resumen

Two primary manifestations of the eugenics movement in America were the involuntary sterilization of certain classes of people, including the mentally ill and disabled and some types of criminals, and the “family study,” genealogical reports that traced criminal behavior, immorality, and mental problems throughout family trees to determine whether the characteristics are inheritable. Both family studies and sterilization proved to be important fodder for American literary authors, who made significant use of the rhetoric of family and propagation. Erskine Caldwell's Tobacco Road is particularly interesting to read with eugenics in mind, for the 1932 novel is intrinsically bound up with issues of breeding, heredity, and degeneration. Caldwell's text, which he characterized as literary realism, relies not only on the genre of family study in general but more particularly on a study conducted by Caldwell's father in 1928 and published two years later in the journal Eugenics; Ira Caldwell had attempted to rescue a poor white family from what he saw as the conditions of their ongoing degeneracy but was rejected completely by the family, leading to his renunciation of many of his social reform ideals in favor of sterilization programs. Erskine Caldwell drew heavily on his father's failed attempt at reform, and Tobacco Road ultimately argues for the sterilization of Georgia's poor whites, but with the pessimistic caveat that the problems of degeneracy and rural poverty have no final solution. Caldwell's manipulation of his audience, his observation of his father's eugenics experimentation, and his use of extended metaphors, both mechanical and agricultural, for family all create a deeply cynical novel that condemns America's economic modus operandi for the living conditions of the poor but also condemns those poor as being permanently beyond help. In the end, Caldwell argues that the poor – in both money and breeding – will be always with us and that we are doomed to witness the full horror of their degradation without the possibility of either relieving their plight or eradicating them.

Resumen

The Gurukul system of education was only available in a few places in ancient India. Christian missionaries transformed this condition, establishing the current educational system and bringing education to all people, regardless of caste, creed, colour, or social rank. Robert Caldwell, in particular, made significant contribution in providing education to the poor in South India throughout the nineteenth century. In Idayangudi, Tirunelveli, he undertook various reformatory activities in the areas of gospel, Tamil language, society, medicine, and education. Robert Caldwell was born in Antrim, Ireland, in 1814. He went to Glasgow University to study. He was an expert in English, Tamil, and Religious Texts, as well as art. He was fluent in Tamil, English, Greek, Telugu, and Sanskrit, among other languages. In 1841, he went to Tirunelveli's Idayangudi in South India as a missionary under the London Missionary Society. He revitalised the boy's school which was begun by Rev. Iranius. In 1842, Caldwell also founded the Girl's School. These schools taught subjects like Tamil, English, Geography, and History. He founded Anglo Vernacular Schools to teach English and Tamil letters to youngsters who did not know English. He established schools in places like Tharuvai, Ramanathapuram, Samugarengapuram, Kulasegaran Pattinam, Azhvar Thirunagari, Tuticorin, Arumangalam, Thenthiruperai, and Thatanpadam. Caldwell stayed in Idayangudi for more than 50 years, bringing about significant changes for the illiterate. Caldwell's legacy lives on in the hearts of the people and has fused with the Chernozem soil, as evidenced by educational institutions and researchers who have benefited from them.

Background Endoscopic sinus surgeons are commonly faced with the management of patients with persistent maxillary sinusitis despite previous Caldwell–Luc surgery. Given the potential for altered mucociliary clearance in the post-Caldwell–Luc maxillary sinus, the optimal approach for surgical revision has not been well characterized. The objective of this study was to review our experience in endoscopic versus repeat Caldwell–Luc approaches in patients who have failed Caldwell–Luc surgery for chronic maxillary sinusitis. Methods Retrospective chart review was performed on patients who had a history of a Caldwell–Luc procedure and who then underwent a surgical revision for persistent maxillary sinusitis at the Oregon Health and Science University and Medical College of Wisconsin between 1983 and 2002. Results Sixty-eight patients were identified, with a total of 156 revision procedures performed on 103 maxillary sinuses. Fifty-three percent of the sinuses underwent endoscopic maxillary antrostomy as the first surgical revision, while 47% underwent a revision Caldwell–Luc procedure. Sixty-seven percent of the sinuses in the revision endoscopic group had clinical resolution with a single surgical revision, and 60% of the sinuses in the revision Caldwell–Luc group had clinical improvement with one surgical revision (p = 0.46). The endoscopic group averaged 1.3 ± 0.5 revision procedures per sinus to achieve clinical resolution, and the revision Caldwell–Luc group averaged 1.7 ± 1.0 revision procedures per sinus (p = 0.3). Mean follow-up was 25 months. Conclusion Endoscopic revision of the maxillary sinus yields comparable outcomes to repeat Caldwell–Luc procedure in patients with a history of previous failed Caldwell–Luc surgery. Endoscopic revision surgery is a viable alternative for surgical rehabilitation of the post-Caldwell–Luc maxillary sinus.

The genus Abbrosoga Caldwell (Delphacidae: Delphacinae: Delphacini) was described in Caldwell & Martorell (1951) to include the single species Abbrosoga errata Caldwell, 1951. Here, a second species, Abbrosoga multispinosa n. sp. is described. Revised diagnostics are presented for the genus and A. errata, including a key to species. A compiled list of 64 delphacid species from Puerto Rico is presented, with updated nomenclature, including the new species and a new record of Delphacodes aterrima for Puerto Rico.

The tribe Dikraneurini, belonging to subfamily Typhlocybinae, is represented in the Afrotropical, Australian, Indomalayan, Nearctic, Neotropical and Paleartic regions with 201 genera and 31 subgenera recognized (Balme 2007). The genus Typhlocybella Baker, 1903 includes the following four species: Typhlocybella minima Baker, 1903 from Nicaragua, T. maculata Caldwell & Martorell, 1952 from Puerto Rico, T. parva Ruppel & DeLong, 1953 from Mexico and T. minuta (DeLong 1924) from Florida (USA) (Baker 1903, DeLong 1924, Caldwell & Martorell 1952, Ruppel & DeLong 1953). T. minima has been found on papaya, grasses, weeds, bushes, while T. maculata has been captured on grasses (Caldwell & Martorell 1952).

Resumen

Maxillary sinus mucocele, which appears more than 10 years after Caldwell-Luc surgery, is very rare in the United States or Europe. However, it is very common in Japan. It is called “postoperative maxillary sinus mucocele” or “postoperative maxillary cyst.” In this paper, postoperative maxillary sinus mucoceles, which protruded into the orbits, are reported. One patient, a 50-year-old man, underwent Caldwell-Luc surgery 31 years ago, and the other patient, a 61-year-old woman, underwent Caldwell-Luc surgery at the age of 18. The incidence of this disease, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment are discussed in this paper.

Apesar de consagrada na literatura, a antrostomiaendoscópica nem sempre consegue fornecer acesso absoluto à mucosa do seio maxilar, fato que suscita debates a respeito da sua extensão. A antrostomia mediante acesso de Caldwell-luc é realizada há mais de 120 anos, com anestesia geral ou local, e busca garantir maior visibilidade da área explorada. Sendo assim, o presente caso versa sobre paciente do sexo feminino, 40 anos, que comparece ao ambulatório de cirurgia e traumatologia bucomaxilofacial do Hospital do Oeste -Barreiras (BA) para avaliação. Referesinusite crônica há aproximadamente um ano, após tratamento endodôntico, com constante obstrução nasal em lado direito e sem melhora com uso de medicamentos. O tratamento proposto foi a antrostomia maxilar com acesso de Caldwell-luc, com anestesia geral, seguido da instalação de dreno rígido para irrigação direta em seio maxilar, através de abertura na parede lateral da cavidade nasal do lado acometido. A antrostomia mediante acesso cirúrgico de Caldwell-luc é um procedimento clássico na literatura, tendo permanecido como técnica cirúrgica hegemônica para tratamento de sinusites até o surgimento da cirurgia endoscópica funcional, que possibilitou uma técnica menos invasiva. No entanto, os avanços da cirurgia endoscópica esbarram na limitação da área acessada neste tipo de procedimento. Apesar das possíveis complicações relacionadas à técnica, a cirurgia de Caldwell-luc permanece como um método viável para tratamento de morbidades do seio maxilar.

Resumen

This issue of the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences is dedicated to Professor Glen Caldwell in honour of his extensive contributions to the field of paleontology and scientific publishing. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Glasgow in 1957, Dr. Caldwell joined the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan, where he stayed for more than 30 years. During his tenure, he led the way in launching a new integrated curriculum, including paleobiology, geochemistry, and geophysics, and in organizing and equipping a vigorous research program. Dr. Caldwell also organized two international symposia on Cretaceous rocks of the Western Interior Basin of North America. Over the years he served on and made distinctive contributions to a wide variety of national and international professional organizations, including the American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature, GAC, NSERC, and the International Union of Geological Sciences. Dr. Caldwell served as Vice-President (Research) of The University of Western Ontario from 1988 to his retirement in 1996. He continues to teach and serve various scientific organizations, and he remains a strong advocate for basic research grants.

In this paper, an improvement of the maxillary sinus drainage after the remotion of foreign bodies by Caldwell-Luc surgery is developed. Three patients with tooth or radicular apex introduced into the maxillary antrum during dental extraction were submitted to the surgery. In contrast to the opening to the nasal cavity, two probes were installed to perform the irrigation and aspiration of the antrum after the surgery. The conclusions are that the use of the probes is an advance in the Caldwell-Luc surgery. With the irrigation and aspiration, the opening to the nasal cavity is not necessary and the result is a comfortable recovery to the patient. The Caldwell-Luc surgery is a safe and simple procedure to remove foreign bodies from the maxillary sinus.

Background: Maxillary sinus inverted papilloma entails medial maxillectomy and is associated with high incidence of recurrence. Objective: To study the impact of prior surgery on recurrence rate after transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy. Methodology: Eighteen patients with primary and 33 with recurrent maxillary sinus inverted papilloma underwent transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy. Caldwell-Luc operation was the primary surgery in 12 patients, transnasal endoscopic resection in 20, and midfacial degloving technique in one. The follow-up period ranged between 2 to 19.5 years with an average of 8.8 years. Results: Recurrence was detected in 8/51 maxillary sinus inverted papilloma patients (15.7 %), 1/18 of primary cases (5.5 %), 7/33 of recurrent cases (21.2 %); 3/20 of the transnasal endoscopic resection group (15%) and 4/12 of the Caldwell-Luc group (33.3%). Redo transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy was followed by a single recurrence in the Caldwell-Luc group (25%), and no recurrence in the other groups. Conclusion: Recurrence is more common in recurrent maxillary sinus inverted papilloma than primary lesions. Recurrent maxillary sinus inverted papilloma after Caldwell-Luc operation has higher incidence of recurrence than after transnasal endoscopic resection.

Abstract OBJECTIVE Classic surgical exposures of the infratemporal fossa region, including the adjacent intracranial space, temporal bone, and sinonasal region, require the extensive exposure associated with the transcranial, transfacial, and transmandibular approaches with their inherent neurological and cosmetic morbidities. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility and exposure afforded by combining 2 endoscopic transmaxillary approaches, endonasal and Caldwell-Luc supplement, to the infratemporal fossa. METHODS Endoscopic transmaxillary dissection was performed in 4 formalin-fixed cadaver heads (8 sides). We quantified the extent of exposure achieved within the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae after our initial dissection, which was endonasal with a medial antrostomy, and after addition of a Caldwell-Luc incision with an anterior antrostomy. Complementing this anatomic study, we report on a patient in whom this endoscopic transmaxillary approach combining the endonasal and Caldwell-Luc approaches was used for resection of a trigeminal schwannoma in the infratemporal fossa. RESULTS The combination of these 2 endoscopic transmaxillary approaches enabled visualization of the entire region of the pterygopalatine fossa and anteromedial aspect of the infratemporal fossa. Additional posterolateral exposure of the infratemporal fossa requires significant traumatic traction on the nose. Addition of the Caldwell-Luc transmaxillary approach exposed the remainder of the infratemporal fossa, including the mandibular nerve and branches, middle meningeal artery, and even the distal cervical portion of the internal carotid artery. CONCLUSION Endoscopic exposure of the infratemporal fossa is feasible. Using the combination of the endonasal and Caldwell-Luc approaches for direct transmaxillary access significantly extended exposure, allowing safe and effective resection of infratemporal fossa lesions.

This article tries to show how James Agee in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941) and Erskine Caldwell in his fiction from the Depression years–especially the little-known novella, The Sacrilege of Alan Kent (1930)–used a discourse of the sacred to represent the strange otherness of the Depression South. They particularly drew on the “left hand sacred” (of taboo, repulsiveness and sacrifice) as distinct from the “right hand sacred” found in institutional religion. The article argues that a theoretical understanding of Agee and Caldwell’s use of the sacred may be provided by Georges Bataille. It seems particularly appropriate to invoke Bataille since he was concerned with the political elements of the sacred and sought to mobilize these elements during the 1930s when liberal democracy was thought by many leftist writers on both sides of the Atlantic to have failed. Bataille provides a productive analogue to the two southerners, who shared this perception of liberal democracy, because he tried to articulate a radical path in this decade that was not Marxist. Agee and Caldwell, although notionally Communist, were dissatisfied with Marxism because they saw it as another version of a utilitarian or restricted economy. They looked instead to the sacred as a discourse of transgression–a discourse that was rooted in what Bataille called a general economy or the deeper organization of collective life around ecology and the gift.

Resumen

Accurate image interpretation of Waters’ and Caldwell view radiographs used for sinusitis screening is challenging. Therefore, we developed a deep learning algorithm for diagnosing frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary sinusitis on both Waters’ and Caldwell views. The datasets were selected for the training and validation set (n = 1403, sinusitis% = 34.3%) and the test set (n = 132, sinusitis% = 29.5%) by temporal separation. The algorithm can simultaneously detect and classify each paranasal sinus using both Waters’ and Caldwell views without manual cropping. Single- and multi-view models were compared. Our proposed algorithm satisfactorily diagnosed frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary sinusitis on both Waters’ and Caldwell views (area under the curve (AUC), 0.71 (95% confidence interval, 0.62–0.80), 0.78 (0.72–0.85), and 0.88 (0.84–0.92), respectively). The one-sided DeLong’s test was used to compare the AUCs, and the Obuchowski–Rockette model was used to pool the AUCs of the radiologists. The algorithm yielded a higher AUC than radiologists for ethmoid and maxillary sinusitis (p = 0.012 and 0.013, respectively). The multi-view model also exhibited a higher AUC than the single Waters’ view model for maxillary sinusitis (p = 0.038). Therefore, our algorithm showed diagnostic performances comparable to radiologists and enhanced the value of radiography as a first-line imaging modality in assessing multiple sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: Caldwell and Luc described the Caldwell-Luc operation more than 100 years ago as the surgical treatment for maxillary sinus disease. During the last decades less radical interventions using endoscopic approach have mainly replaced the classical procedures done for chronic and recurrent maxillary sinusitis. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Between 1991 and 2002, 62 patients had the Caldwell-Luc approach for different indications. RESULTS: Twenty (32%) patients had chronic sinusitis, 16 (26%) patients had inverted papilloma, 9 (15%) patients had suffered from nasal polyposis, 4 patients (6%) had dentigerous cyst, 4 (6%) patients had fungal ball, and 9 (15%) patients were operated for other indications. CONCLUSIONS: The use of this surgical approach is rational in cases of fungal disease and in endoscopic medial maxillectomy for treating inverted papilloma. In all other cases, the preferred approach should now be endoscopic.

O artigo procura apresentar as contribuições do pesquisador norte-americano John T. Caldwell para os estudos contemporâneos de cinema e televisão. Em diversas de suas obras, Caldwell aponta que a distância entre o pensamento analítico produzido nos ambientes acadêmicos e as práticas autorreflexivas dos trabalhadores no campo da produção audiovisual pode ser menor do que se pensa. Com efeito, o autor advoga que a observação das práticas autorreflexivas e autoconscientes dos trabalhadores em posições consideradas mais técnicas, e supostamente menos criativas, traria importantes contribuições para o pensamento teórico sobre a indústria do audiovisual. O artigo procura explorar, num primeiro momento, os conceitos de ‘teoria industrial’ e de ‘práticas reflexivas abaixo-da-linha’ desenvolvidos pelo autor. Num segundo momento, procuraremos averiguar de que modo as contribuições metodológicas das reflexões propostas por Caldwell nos permitem pensar questões de estilo em obras do cinema e da televisão.

Summary This article assesses Francis Whyte Ellis’s (1777–1819) “Note to the Introduction” to Alexander Duncan Campbell’s (1789–1857) Grammar of the Teloogoo Language (1816) in the context of the history of comparative linguistics in India. The idea of a ‘South Indian family of languages’, later named ‘Dravidian’ by Robert Caldwell in 1856, was first proposed by Ellis in 1816, and so a case could be made to claim for him the beginnings of a comparative methodology in the study of Dravidian languages. Until now, in the history of comparative Dravidian linguistics Caldwell (1814–1891) has been celebrated as the pioneer in this field. The present study attempts to establish Ellis’s rightful place in this history by critically evaluating his contribution. The careful examination of the data presented by Ellis indeed suggests that he should be regarded as the discoverer of the Dravidian family of languages well before Caldwell.

Resumen

John C. Colt was the author of a successful bookkeeping text which had many school adoptions and at least 46 editions. During an argument with Samuel Adams, his publisher, over the cost of his 5th edition, Colt killed Adams with a hatchet. Convicted of murder and condemned to execution by hanging, Colt committed suicide in prison in 1842. His text, The Science of Double Entry Bookkeeping, first published in 1838, continued in print until 1856.
