Resumen
Multifunctional agriculture could be strategic for the recovery of some mountain areas of the Alps, and traditional crops like cereals generated study cases that triggered processes of development, such as rye in Camonica Valley (Northern Italy). However, farmers are often newcomers, and the specificities of low input agriculture make the training in agriculture fundamental. The impact of public workshops/seminars (organized by the Ge.S.Di.Mont. Research Centre of the University of Milan in Camonica Valley) on cereal cultivation between 2016 and 2021 was investigated. Moreover, rye produced in Camonica Valley was analyzed. The results show an increase in participation and a wider use of the streaming service. The percentage of participants not from an agricultural background had always remained about 50%, but decreased to 15.17% ± 5.07 in 2021, in contrast to the increase of professionals in agriculture and forestry. This is probably due to the accreditation of training activities for agronomists and foresters, and to the start of specific training projects regarding cereals. Samples of rye produced in Camonica Valley following the period of training activities were phytochemically/nutritionally characterized and compared to commercial rye. Locally produced rye proved to be comparable to the commercial one; however it showed a remarkable unevenness in secondary metabolite content and productivity, due to environmental differences and diverse agro-techniques.

Resumen
Multiscale structural analysis is carried out to explore the sequence of superposed pre-Alpine chloritoid–staurolite–andalusite metamorphic assemblages in the polydeformed Variscan basement of the upper Val Camonica, in the central Southalpine domain. The dominant fabric in the upper Val Camonica basement is the late-Variscan S2 foliation, marked by greenschist facies minerals and truncated by the base of Permian siliciclastic sequences. The intersection with the sedimentary strata defines a Permian age limit on the pre-Alpine tectono–metamorphic evolution and exhumation of the Variscan basement. The detailed structural survey revealed that the older S1 foliation was locally preserved in low-strained domains. S1 is a composite fabric resulting from combining S1a and S1b: in the metapelites, S1a was supported by chloritoid, garnet, and biotite and developed before S1b, which was marked by staurolite, garnet, and biotite. S1a and S1b developed at intermediate pressure amphibolite facies conditions during the Variscan convergence, S1a at T = 520–550 °C and P ≃ 0.8 GPa, S1b at T = 550–650 °C and P = 0.4–0.7 GPa. The special feature of the upper Val Camonica metapelites is andalusite, which formed between the late D1b and early D2 tectonic events. Andalusite developed at T = 520–580 °C and P = 0.2–0.4 GPa in pre-Permian times, after the peak of the Variscan collision and before the exhumation of the Variscan basement and the subsequent deposition of the Permian covers. It follows that the upper Val Camonica andalusite has a different age and tectonic significance as compared to that of other pre-Alpine andalusite occurrences in the Alps, where andalusite mostly developed during exhumation of high-temperature basement rocks in Permian–Triassic times.

Resumen
Nine excavation seasons at Ossimo Anvòia in the Val Camonica (Central Alps, Italy) have brought to light a Copper Age ceremonial area with symbolic monoliths (statue menhirs) in their original position. Hundreds of artifacts and ecofacts indicate ideological activity during the 3rd millennium BC. A large pit (F18) was discovered that was unusual for its great size and the abundance of well-preserved charcoal. The pit housed a fallen monolith (M9) showing complicated reshaping. A detailed spatial study based on 6 radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements combined with charcoal analysis has untangled key information to define the history of feature F18-M9.14C data show that the burning event occurred most probably in the 4th century AD, not in prehistory. We infer a unique episode of “reconsecration” during the very latest phases of pagan cult activity in the Val Camonica. Further studies are needed to resolve the relationships with other features of the site. In addition, charcoal analysis has produced paleobotanical information for a scarcely known period in the environmental history of the area. A sparse forest withPicea abies, Larix decidua, andFagus sylvaticaexisted, associated with areas likely devoted to grazing. There is a remarkable absence of chestnut.

Resumen
Ossimo-Pat megalithic sanctuary (Valle Camonica, BS, Italy) is one of the most relevant archaeological findings of the southern alpine region, for the variety of its structures and the quality of its engraved monoliths. Its unique state of preservation gives the opportunity to apply the luminescence dating of the rock surface method. Here, we investigate the use of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) for dating five cobbles from the site and compare cobble-surface derived ages to quartz OSL ages from sediments and to archaeological evidences. The obtained ages confirm the archaeological studies and open the way to a new hypothesis.

Resumen
AbstractEstimating the carbon storage of forests is essential to support climate change mitigation and promote the transition into a low-carbon emission economy. To achieve this goal, voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) are essential. VCMs are promoted by a spontaneous demand, not imposed by binding targets, as the regulated ones. In Italy, only in Veneto and Piedmont Regions (Northern Italy), VCMs through forestry activities were carried out. Valle Camonica District (Northern Italy, Lombardy Region) is ready for a local VCM, but carbon storage of its forests was never estimated. The aim of this work was to estimate the total carbon storage (TCS; t C ha−1) of forest biomass of Valle Camonica District, at the stand level, taking into account: (1) aboveground biomass, (2) belowground biomass, (3) deadwood, and (4) litter. We developed a user-friendly model, based on site-specific primary (measured) data, and we applied it to a dataset of 2019 stands extracted from 45 Forest Management Plans. Preliminary results showed that, in 2016, the TCS achieved 76.02 t C ha−1. The aboveground biomass was the most relevant carbon pool (48.86 t C ha−1; 64.27% of TCS). From 2017 to 2029, through multifunctional forest management, the TCS could increase of 2.48 t C ha−1 (+ 3.26%). In the same period, assuming to convert coppices stands to high forests, an additional TCS of 0.78 t C ha−1 (equal to 2.85 t CO2 ha−1) in the aboveground biomass could be achieved without increasing forest areas. The additional carbon could be certified and exchanged on a VCM, contributing to climate change mitigation at a local level.

Resumen
The current pandemic has resulted in the withdrawal of all social and health services not aimed at combatting COVID-19. This has led to a weakening of care services for family caregivers, especially in remote areas. Moreover, the pandemic has revealed all the frailties of a socio-health system that rarely involves caregivers in the co-design of services. However, in recent years, there has been a debate about the importance of promoting participatory interventions to support carers. Digital health (DH) intervention has been suggested as a successful tool to as-sist remote carers and engage them. This article reflects on the outcomes of a participatory DH intervention in Valle Camonica for family caregivers. The results indicated how DH could be a valid solution to train caregivers safely and effectively, but also how these interventions could not be considered as a panacea for all the weaknesses of health and social services. Mutual psychological support and community belonging among caregivers are not optimal in a remote connection dimension. This article contributes to the literature on the engagement of caregivers in the co-design of care interventions, with particular attention to DH, by pointing out by pointing out certain aspects that need to be considered in the implementation amongst a fragile population in a rural setting.

Resumen
Plaster making was reported in the seventh book of Vitruvius’ On Architecture describing two mortar coats: harenatum with sand for the bottom (render coat) and marmoratum with crushed marble for the top (finish coat). Petrographic analyses, with optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction, were made on plasters (2nd century BC - 4th century AD) coming from different roman sites of Lombardy: Milan, Brescia, Camonica valley, lake Garda, river Po plain. The analyses identified the plaster aggregates on the basis of composition, grain size and morphology. The render coats generally show river sand and/or crushed brick with some mineralogical differences due to the different supply areas. The finish coats show different types of aggregate: i) carbonate rocks (limestone, dolomite); ii) quartz crystals; iii) calcite crystals; iv) sand (quartz and silicates crystals and/or limestone clasts); v) sand and crushed brick. These differences can be useful to discriminate the changes among the time periods and among the sites.

Resumen
Since the earliest manifestations of symbolic activity in modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) in the Upper Palaeolithic, there is evidence for two independent cognitive procedures, for the production of representational images (naturalistic pictures or sculptures) and of abstract signs. The use of signs and symbols is attested for archaic humans (Homo neanderthalensis) and for Homo erectus while art in naturalistic style is an innovation among modern humans. The symbiotic interaction of the two symbolic capacities is illustrated for the visual heritage of Palaeolithic cave paintings in Southwestern Europe, for rock engravings in the Italian Alps (Val Camonica) and for the vivid use of signs and symbols in Southeastern Europe during the Neolithic. Around 5500 BC, sign use in Southeastern Europe reached a sophisticated stage of organization as to produce the earliest writing system of mankind. Since abstractness is the main theme in the visual heritage of the region, this script, not surprisingly, is composed of predominantly abstract signs.

Resumen
Malta's Neolithic megalithic ‘temples’, unique in the Mediterranean, provide a striking challenge to the archaeological imagination. Most explanations have employed a simple functionalism: the temples resulted from Malta's insularity. Such explanations lack the theoretical grounding provided by studies of agency and meaning, and they do not sufficiently account for Malta's pattern of integration into and differentiation from a central Mediterranean regional culture. I argue that: (a) contextual evidence suggests that the temples created settings for rites emphasizing local origins and identity; (b) even in periods of greatest cultural difference, the Maltese had contacts with nearby societies, and Maltese travellers probably recognized cultural differences in important ritual practices; and (c) when ritual practitioners began reinterpreting a common heritage of meanings to create the temple rites, they also created a new island identity based on these rites. In effect, after two millennia of cultural similarity to their neighbours, the Neolithic Maltesecreateda cultural island, perhaps in reaction to changes in the constitution of society sweeping Europe in the fourth millennium BC. The result was an island of cultural difference similar in scale and, perhaps, origin to many other archaeologically unique settings such as Val Camonica, the Morbihan, Stonehenge, and Chaco Canyon.

Resumen
AbstractThis article uses rock art to explore potential bonds between Scandinavia and Italy, starting in the second half of the third millennium BCE with the enigmatic Mjeltehaugen burial monument in coastal western Norway and its striking rock art images, and ending in the first millennium BCE with ship motifs in inland Val Camonica, Italy. While the carved dagger on the Mjeltehaugen slab is unique in its Nordic setting, such weapon depictions are frequently seen on the Continent, e.g. in South Tyrol, and more often in later Nordic rock art. Strong evidence of trade relations between the Italian Alps and Scandinavia is found c. 1500–1100 BCE when the importation of copper from South Tyrol coincided with two-way transmission of luxury items, and again in a different form, c. 1000–700 BCE when strong similarities in burial traditions between the two areas may be seen as evidence of direct cultural connections or a shared cultural koiné. In order to understand the social fabric of these relations and how they unfolded through time, the authors discuss several different models of interaction. It is hypothesised that rock art practices played a role in establishing and maintaining durable social relations, through what we consider to be a two-way transmission of symbolic concepts and iconography during seasonal meetings related to trade and travel.

Resumen
Erosion is one of the major threats listed in the Soil Thematic Strategy of the European Commission and the Alps are one of the most vulnerable ecosystems, with one of the highest erosion rates of the whole European Union. This is the first study investigating the future scenarios of soil erosion in Val Camonica and Lake Iseo, which is one of the largest valleys of the central Italian Alps, considering both climate change and land cover transformations. Simulations were done with the Dynamic Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (D-RUSLE) model, which is able to account also for snow cover and land cover dynamics simulated with automatic machine learning. Results confirm that land cover projections, usually ignored in these studies, might have a significant impact on the estimates of future soil erosion. Our scenario analysis for 2100 shows that if the mean annual precipitation does not change significantly and temperature increases no more than 1.5–2.0 °C, then the erosion rate will decrease by 67% for about half of the study area. At the other extreme, if the mean annual precipitation increases by more than 8% and the temperature increases by more than 4.0 °C, then about three-quarters of the study area increases the erosion rate by 92%. What clearly emerges from the study is that regions with higher erosion anomalies (positive and negative) are expected to expand in the future, and their patterns will be modulated by future land transformations.

Models for carbon (C) stock assessment are widely applied in forest science, and mainly differ according to the scale of application, the required data, and the objectives for their implementation. This work presents the methodology implemented into the second version of an empirical model, WOody biomass and Carbon ASsessment (WOCAS v2), that uses the data of forest management plans (FMP) to calculate the mass of wood (t∙year−1 of dry matter, DM) and C (t∙year−1 C) at the stand level and from the year in which the FMPs came into force until a predefined reference year, for an Italian Case Study Area of Central Alps. The mass of wood and C are computed for (i) aboveground wood biomass (AWB), (ii) belowground wood biomass (BWB), and (iii) dead organic matter (DOM; i.e., dead wood and litter) according to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines. WOCAS v2 was tested for the first time for 2019 public forest stands (3.67 × 104 ha) of Valle Camonica for the period 1984–2018. Results showed that, in 2018 and at the landscape level, the total living wood biomass (TLB; AWB + BWB) reached 5.35∙106 t DM. TLB yield (t·ha−1·year−1 DM) ranged from 44.72 ± 44.42 t·ha−1·year−1 DM (1984) to 145.49 ± 70.76 t·ha−1·year−1 DM (2018). In the same year, DOM amounted to 6.12∙105 t DM, ranging from 8.28 ± 7.79 t·ha−1·year−1 DM (1989) to 17.11 ± 12.03 t·ha−1·year−1 DM (2015). The total weighted C yield, computed as the sum of C yield in AWB, BWB, and DOM of each stand, ranged from 26.63 ± 26.80 t∙ha−1∙year−1 C (1984) to 80.28 ± 41.32 t∙ha−1∙year−1 C (2018). The results demonstrated that FMPs data can be useful in estimating wood and C mass at the stand level and their variation over space and time for AWB as well as for BWB and DOM, which are not considered in the FMPs. This can represent a starting point for defining sustainable forest management policies and practices to improve forest vitality and conservation in compatibility with ecosystem services provision. Moreover, as the model is based on a standardized methodology it can be applied in any other forest area where the same input data are made available; this may constitute the basis for further applications on a broader scale.

Procuraremos analisar o sentido que o espaço mítico irá tomar nessas obras, bem como suas implicações para a poética camoniana.</p> <p>The present work intends to effect a comparative study between the lyric poem “Sôbolos Rios” and the episode referring to the Ilha dos Amores as narrated through Canto IX of “Os Lusíadas”. Both have as a principle theme the mythic space, which is represented in the lyric poem by Sião, the promised land of Jewish myth, and in the epic poem by Ilha dos Amores, a place where the divine and human meet. We attempt to analyse the sense of this mythical space, as well as its implications for the literary construct of Camões.</p>

Abstract Objective In Hebrew online health communities, participants commonly write medical terms that appear as transliterated forms of a source term in English. Such transliterations introduce high variability in text and challenge text-analytics methods. To reduce their variability, medical terms must be normalized, such as linking them to Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) concepts. We present a method to identify both transliterated and translated Hebrew medical terms and link them with UMLS entities. Materials and Methods We investigate the effect of linking terms in Camoni, a popular Israeli online health community in Hebrew. Our method, MDTEL (Medical Deep Transliteration Entity Linking), includes (1) an attention-based recurrent neural network encoder-decoder to transliterate words and mapping UMLS from English to Hebrew, (2) an unsupervised method for creating a transliteration dataset in any language without manually labeled data, and (3) an efficient way to identify and link medical entities in the Hebrew corpus to UMLS concepts, by producing a high-recall list of candidate medical terms in the corpus, and then filtering the candidates to relevant medical terms. Results We carry out experiments on 3 disease-specific communities: diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and depression. MDTEL tagging and normalizing on Camoni posts achieved 99% accuracy, 92% recall, and 87% precision. When tagging and normalizing terms in queries from the Camoni search logs, UMLS-normalized queries improved search results in 46% of the cases. Conclusions Cross-lingual UMLS entity linking from Hebrew is possible and improves search performance across communities. Annotated datasets, annotation guidelines, and code are made available online (https://github.com/yonatanbitton/mdtel).

Abstract Background Social Media (SM) networks are a major communication tool for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and healthcare professionals (HCPs). In Israel there are several SM platforms, some guided by HCPs while others are patients closed members groups. The largest HCP- patients network is called ‘Camoni’ (‘like me’). We aimed to assess topics of patients’ interest by exploration through SM. Methods This study had two phases: I –a qualitative study to assess topics of patients’ interest- screening. Posts of patients with IBD on ‘Camoni’ were evaluated by thematic analysis: identifying patterned meaning, coding based on topic, and categorising major groups. II - an anonymized survey was distributed online through SM networks. The survey was based on the identified topics in the screening, asking the participants to elect and delve only on the five most relevant topics. Satisfaction was assessed by visual analogue scales (VAS) of 0–100 points. Results Screening included 2,123 posts published on Camoni between 2014–2019. The analysis revealed 18 different topics (Figure 1). The online survey was launched on November 2019 and had 329 responders: male 47.9%, age 38 years (IQR 29–51), disease duration 10 years (IQR 4–20), active disease 43%, using medications 80.9%: steroids 8.9%, anti-TNFs 31.6%, anti-integrins 9.1%, ustekinumab 4.6%, tofacitinib 2.1%. Crohn’s disease 63.4%, perianal disease 40.8%, extraintestinal manifestations 27%, history of surgery 36.4%, care in hospital outpatient clinics 67.8%. The distribution of satisfaction VAS scores was asymmetric with skewness to the right (Figure 3). Median (IQR) for general satisfaction of the treating physician - 87.5 (73–99), accessibility to HCPs - 77.5 (48.5–92), HCP professionalism 90 (75–99), degree of understanding patients’ concerns 81 (51–96), effectiveness of communication with HCPs 81 (59.7–96). The first five elected-topics of interest were: diet, lifestyle, complementary and alternative medicine, interpretation of medical results, and referral of patients to specialists and reviews (Figure 2). Most responders (85.1%) prefer to be active on an SM network that is guided by HCPs; however,, only 22% of online survey responders were active on Camoni. Conclusion Patients with IBD with a significant disease burden are highly satisfied from conventional care. However, patients are still in need for further support and information, perceived as not being addressed in the conventional setting. An operative multidisciplinary setting in routine care, incorporating dietitians, IBD-nurses and HCP’s focusing on alternative and complementary medicine is advised.
