The Allied campaigns preceding the landings in the beaches of Normandy shaped the perceptions and thinking of allied commanders on how to conduct a large-scale invasion against the German held defences in France in the later stages of World War II. One such campaign in Sicily in the summer of 1943, “Operation Husky”, is a study in case as to whether that campaign could be taken as a success or failure for the Allies in terms of meeting the desired end state. This paper examines the various events of the Sicily campaign and tries to identify how the concept of a desired end state can help to ju

The article presents and analyzes the views of Major General Franciszek Skibiński on the organization of the armored division. Skibiński presented his proposal, based on his own experience and available literature before the outbreak of the war. During his service in the Polish Armed Forces, he presented a modified version arising from the war experiences of the French campaign of 1940 and the organization of British armored forces. The validity of which was verified during the war in 1944–1945.

There has been a great deal of discussion about the large volumes of foreign fighters involved in civil conflicts in Syria and Iraq over recent years. Yet, there remains little systematic evidence about the effect, if any, that foreign fighters have upon the conflicts they join. Existing literature distinguishes between the resources fighters bring to rebel groups and the liability they represent in regards to campaign cohesion. We seek to establish preliminary evidence as to whether or not foreign fighters contribute to the success of the campaigns they join. Our multinomial logistic and comp

This chapter looks at efforts to contain and control both the presentation and the reception of American images in the Soviet Union. A striking outcome of these efforts was the anti-American campaign, a little-discussed element of the larger anti-cosmopolitanism campaign. The Soviet anti-Americanism of the early Cold War differs from contemporary anti-Americanism in the sense that it was a campaign orchestrated by the ruling party of a state. The focus here is on how the Communist Party of the Soviet Union interfered in all stages of the creative process, dictating the shape plays, films, circ

The representative work is Gao Ganda (Uncle Gao), a novel created by the Yan’an-based writer Ouyang Shan (1908–2000). In the novel Ouyang worked within the limits of rich anti-superstition materials in the Party newspaper to make shamans and rural superstition central targets for the rural revolution.
