In an attempt to elucidate the mechanism by which ethanol affects vertebrate thermoregulation, the effect of ethanol on temperature selection was studied in the goldfish, Carassius auratus. Ethanol was administered to 10 to 15 g fish by mixing it in the water of a temperature gradient. The dose response curve was very steep between 0.5% (v/v) ethanol (no response) and 0.7% (significant lowering of selected temperature in treated fish). Goldfish are able to drastically change their gill morphology by forming an interlamellar cell mass (ILCM) when acclimated to temperatures below 15 ° C. This morphological change is reversed when the fish is exposed to hypoxia or an increase in temperature. Methylmercury is both a potent neurotoxin and putative non-steroidal endocrine disruptor. Laboratory studies have provided evidence of reproductive impairment in many fish species after mercury exposure. Effects have been observed at every level of the reproductive axis including degeneration of neurons in the hypothalamus, decreased activity of gonadotrophs in the pituitary, and reduced steroidogenesis in the gonads. Despite the growing amount of research linking methylmercury exposure to reproductive impairment, the target tissues and mechanisms of action involved are still largely unknown.

Fluoxetine (FLX), the active ingredient of Prozac(TM), is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) and has been detected in sewage treatment plant effluents, surface waters, and in multiple fish species. One large gap in the literature exploring the effects of FLX is its affects on food intake and metabolism.
